Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
iris66 · 05/10/2007 19:35

HI all - very quick post as mum's here for the weekend looking after me and giving moral support in DH's absence (and I actually got to go to sleep for an hour this afternoon as a result )

Well, I've had my first dose of insulin and had a "proper" meal courtesy of my mum (garlicky chicken in a thick creamy sauce with smoked bacon & mushrooms with loads of veg and normal potatoes and chocolate ) I've no idea how the insulin is going to affect this mega fest but erring on the side of caution and eating lots just in case .
Hospital was a bit pants. I had high BP & ketones so got monitored for an hour. LO had a mini rave though so the MWs were happy he/she's doing ok.

Swollen - pineapple is very fibrous so if you eat a whole on in one sitting (minus the skin obviously) it irritates your intestines and therefore your womb (similar way to the old castor oil method but without the associated risk of very fast birth & potential for rips/tears! (I don't think it's so effective if you already have a high fibre diet though)

Glad everyone's ok (after a quick skim read) and hope you all have good weekends

Think of me with my big cooked brekkie tomorrow (with extra beans and toast and marmalade!)

RGPargy · 05/10/2007 19:53

Evening all!

LK - I think not letting it get to you is the best course of action. Be strong!!!

Berry - glad you're feeling more positive today. Dont forget tho that the pool might not be available in hospital so be prepared for a possible let down!

Capecodder - sorry you're suffering with BHs. I'm lucky to have mostly escaped them so far. I wonder why some people get them and some dont?

Pixie - yeah that's what i was thinking re the snowsuits. once they're bundled up they'll be warm enough. I might still get one tho, purely because they look cute, but probably for when LO is a bit older. Thinking about it, if i wait til then it'll be spring/summer and she wont need one! We'll see.

Kayla - do you mean 25th October?? three weeks away from now will be end of October surely? Sorry if i've got it wrong tho.

Loopy - you can chuck a glass of that wine my way if you like! Dont care how many Wispas a pack of nappies will buy. I'm just not scooping baby poo down the loo. I will honestly vom everywhere!!! Your doula sounds lovely! glad you have found one. That's a big weight off your mind now, eh?

Berry - thanx, have seen the thread now

Iris - No fair!!! I'm coming to your house to eat chicken with stuff and then to have a full English breakie tomoz!! You can have my beans if you want. Glad the LO was jumping around all over the place. Always a good sign!

I'm gonna go for a bit now. DP is due home any minute after having worked away since Tuesday so i have to go and practice puckering up so i can greet him with big snogs.

jetgirl · 05/10/2007 22:22

It's no coincidence that I started the spreadsheet when bf my DD and my milk-brain had seriously set in. TBH it's the only bit of my life that is organised, if you could see the state of my house at the moment you would know what I mean !

Berry - glad you're feeling better today. I have always found mw was able to answer my questions better than any consultant who always seem so detached, almost to the point of not caring how the mother feels, particularly when you're actually quite scared.

Swollen - I ate pineapple loads in the week leading up to my due date with DD, but it didn't seem to work, tasted nice though, and at least it was something healthy I was gorging on and not my usual bisuits!

RG - how could you put that website link on here I am drooling at the thought of sweets being delivered to me. (Thinks - I could make a spreadsheet covering all the sweets I've ordered and when...

Loopy - glad you liked the biscuits, the dough is good too isn't it? Also glad I made you laugh with my spreadsheet. My mum, who is the most organised woman I know (she keeps records of many loaves of bread her breadmaker has made so she can work out the cost per loaf!!!) thinks it's hilarious and sad, but I think deep down she's just jealous

Bit today as work phoned with some questions. I ignored the call as I am on Mat leave after all and I spent ages preparing all the resources etc so this problem wouldn't arise. Thing is school has taken the cheap option by covering me internally and one of the teachers covering one of my classes has never done any Latin in her life so is, unsurprisingly, struggling.

However, also v excited as I upgraded my phone today, my previous model was nearly 6 years old and the shop assistant looked at it like it had come off the ark! I now have a shiny camera phone to take pictures of my gorgeous children with. It'll be good when I've worked out how to use it...

RGPargy · 05/10/2007 23:50

Jet - now i can see where you get your spreadsheet thing from - your mum works out the cost per loaf? That's dedication!!! Glad you ignored the phone call from work. It's annoying isn't it. What's worse is that they can normally work out the problem for themselves if they put their minds to it, but were probably just being lazy. You had the same phone for 6 years?!! Blimey, after 6 weeks i'm normally bored of mine and cant wait to upgrade! Oh and i've just enjoyed 2 Refresher chews tonight. Yummy!!!

Pixiefish · 06/10/2007 07:55

I'm the same with my phone- I fancy a enw one as ssoon as I'm used to the old one

ChocolateHobnob · 06/10/2007 09:39

Hi all

I am sorry about your inlaws, LK2 - NIGHTMARE! I was all stressed yesterday because my inlaws, who sent an email telling us they're flying the whole family up in November to see the baby, and are stating that they'll be here 'only for one afternoon and night' but that we can have a lovely family time in our house with them. Our house is a tiny 3 bed terrace and our dining table only seats 4 - we cant even feed them all. It's three weeks after my due date but I'm sure I'm going to go over and if I do and am induced then lo will be less than a week old and they want dinner and entertaining! Plus they're bringing 2 toddlers. I know they will want to see lo but couldnt they have come without the entourage first? And also they've spent 500 quid on nonrefundable flights and told us that. So we can't even get them to postpone if necessary. I don't know why they didn't ask if it was okay first. It isn't. The whole thought was stressing me out - they're very difficult guests at the best of times and that may well not be. Anyway last night I was tearful and hormonal about it. Today I just dont care and I am trying to be zen.

Jetgirl, my phones are always years behind everyone else's. How annoying about work! I've got that problem too - it's the state sector's cheapskate solutions.

RG, have you had a Wispa yet? They are soooooo good.

Iris, your meal sounds lovely.

And Loopsy, can I share your doula?!

Off to finish getting stuff for hospital bag as am nearly full term, although know full well that lo is going to be late. (It just kicked me as I wrote that - it has a sense of humour!). Will also have a cheeky stop off in Starbucks in Borders for cookie or cake. Yay. Then off for lunch to see friends whose baby boy was born in July.

Have a good day all of you!

RGPargy · 06/10/2007 09:54

Choc - your in-laws also sound a nightmare! I think i should consider myself incredibly lucky that mine are so lovely!!

No i haven't had a Wispa yet. I must get on the case ASAP! Are they how they used to be tho? No point in re-making something if it's different!

Enjoy your coffee and cake in Buckies and have a lovely time with your friend.

aikigypsy · 06/10/2007 15:10

Quiet today.

I had a lousy night's sleep last night, annoyed with my aunt because she doesn't speak to my part of the family and her kids, my cousins who I was quite close to growing up, are all here for the weekend. I'm sure if I'd known in advance I could have worked out a way to see them all, but this was all sprung on me yesterday, and I'm going off-island for the whole weekend. I wouldn't mind, but I really can't change my plans at this point, I never see these guys, and I don't want to be part of the whole stupid feud between my aunt and my father (it's the usual stupid dispute over family property, elder care, etc.).

I was also flipping out about how it's likely my last night alone in this bed for... possibly forever! I'm staying with my old rommates tonight in Boston/Cambridge, then picking up DP at the airport Sunday night... and then we'll be, like TOGETHER! For the forseeable future! I can't wait, but it's a lot of changes at once (as I said before, but can't stop thinking).

So I'll be off for a long weekend, then after that I probably won't be online so much, as I'll have better things to do with my time

35 weeks today.

Pixiefish · 06/10/2007 15:45

Chocolate Hobnob- don't blame you for being upset- some people have no sense at all. Aki- oooo- new life starting eh.

Have got spd i think- massive pain in my pubic bone, can't walk and can hardly lift my leg.

Have been like this for a couple of weeks but it got really bad day before yesterday

fiona76 · 06/10/2007 16:31

I have spd as well I have had 2 treatments from an osteopath and lots of rest lying down to take strain off. It has got better but still painful. Try not to spread your legs!!

We are DIY ing this weekend again in the last effort push to finish kitchen tiles are nearly all on wall. I'm starving and need snacks but kitchen is like bomb site so thinking of heading down to take away shop. Yum.

Well done england for beating aus in the rugby!! We (NZ) will beat you guys next weekend but its nice you get a week feeling like winners.

RGPargy · 06/10/2007 17:31

Afternoon!

Aiki - yeah it's been really quiet today on here hasn't it! Everyone's families seem to be peeing everyone off lately! What IS the matter with families lately?!! I bed you're REALLY excited about DP coming, eh?! Yay!! Make the most of your last night of "freedom" and take the opportunity to spread out to the max in bed tonight!

Pixie - sometimes i feel like i have SPD. It's difficult to even put knickers on!! I can walk, but only very slowly and leg lifting is difficult too (hence the knicker trouble). Oh well, only just over 7 weeks to go!

Fiona - dont you go getting too confident about NZ beating us at Rugby! Didn't we win the Rugby world cup or something not so long ago??

We've also had some major DIY done today. The plasterer came in and has plastered most of baby's room now. All he has left to do is the window all and a bit just above the wall and before the ceiling. He's done a great job but he is a bit slow. Baby's room is only tiny too so i dread to think how long it would take him to do our room, which is about three times the size! he's coming on Friday to finish it off so if DS hasn't got any work he can let him in. If DS does have work then i feel a sickie coming on.

AnnainNZ · 06/10/2007 17:55

RG, I'd be v surprised if NZ didn't win the rugby - mind you surprises do happen, I didn't think England had a chance against Aussie! DH just came to bed at 4am having stayed up to watch the england game and he is a huge rugby fan and he was amazed England had won too. I am a football fan so was more interested in the fact Man U won 4-0!

Chocolate - in-laws,eh? Having to entertain them that soon after the birth, don't envy you. Mine first of all announced they're NOT coming for their annual February visit next year (because, quote, "Small babies aren't very interesting" - this small baby being their first grandchild!) which i was secretly relieved about. then MIL said the other day on the phone "Oh, you are coming to the UK next year aren't you, even if DH can't make it because of work". So...she isn't going to fly over here but is expecting me to do a 24 hour flight with a small baby on my own...

Fiona - whereabouts in NZ are you from originally?

I think some weird nesting thing has kicked in as I made 6 shepherds pies to freeze today and I think the last time I made a shepherds pie was in cookery class at school! I also have an urge to get up and clean the kitchen floor which is A) so unlike me you wouldn't believe it B) a bit daft at any time but especially at 6 am and C) I'm meant to be resting

Re shepherds' pie and freezing: we find (at the hotel) that making the filling and freezing it in portions works well. When you're peckish, defrost the filling completely (quick and easy in the microwave or on the hob), add mashed potato topping and put in the oven to crisp the top. Yumyumyum.

We had a very funny evening last week (I think it was) with shepherds' pies: DH wrote about it here.

I am sat wearing the most fetching set of anti-thrombosis stockings - held up by straps which greatly resemble those which stop your clothes flopping about in a suitcase . However, if they stop the bratwurst feet/toes/ankles they will be well worth it.

RGPargy · 06/10/2007 20:18

Anna - i dont know a thing about rugby! i dont watch it all and the only footie i watch is the World Cup and then that's IT! As for you going to see the inlaws on a 24 hour flight on your own - forget it!! That'd be a challenge even for Mary Poppins, let alone a first time mum! What ARE they thinking?!!

Loopy - that's a great idea about hiding in the bedroom. I hope Choc takes your advice! Glad you got loads of stuff for DD and i'm even happier that DD is taking revenge on your DH for not taking her out!

What on earth is Ridiculous Robin?!!!

thelady - just read the potato blog - how typical is that! I take my hat off to you who serve the public. Your average Joe Public is an ungrateful and difficult bugger and it's not something that i would ever wish to do! You must be made of the patience to be able to deal with Joe Public!

capecodder · 06/10/2007 20:43

Jetgirl- Nice to know that I am not the only with an old untrendy phone. Mine is 4 years old and DH gave me a new one yesterday because he didn't want to look at it anymore.

I am also sorry that people seem to be struggling with their families. I try to remain fully appreciative of how good I have it on both sides. Mother coming over from US for 3 weeks to help out - her first grandchild and she is beyond giddy (first grandchild). MIL taking 2 weeks of her holiday to come around and help out where-ever is needed. It is wonderful to see people so excited.

RG & Fiona- I am happy to see that other people are having DIY done. In the last few weeks we've had all of our plumbing re-done, new hard wood floors put in and plastering done in the living and dining room. It did start to affect my sanity though. Nursery not even close to being done but not stressing about it.

Starting to get some nesting feelings. Keeping buying lots of new sheets and duvet covers- have had to hide from DH how many I've actually purchased- but still want more [hmmm]. Also obsessed with tidying the garden which was never a big thing before. Anyone elses having any nesting feeings?

Hope you all have a good weekend.

jetgirl · 06/10/2007 20:50

Have developed a craving for fruit smoothies - am so disappointed in myself, it's far too healthy! I told DD I was drinking pinky ponk juice (In the Night Garden devotees will know what I mean), and so she naturally thinks they're great too. What a brilliant way to fill her up and in a healthy way!

Chocolate - Loopy's advice is brilliant, and I have a similar plan myself for when my in-laws come as I expect they'll be packing up the car the minute they hear I'm in labour. I told my MIL that I was hoping to stay in hospital for several days as the visiting hours are extremely restricted. She thought that was a good idea - she used to be a midwife herself and knows how tiring it can be for a new mother, but that won't stop them!!

RG - Ridiculous Robin is Robin Hood on BBC 1. More of a Strictly Come Dancing fan myself!

ChocolateHobnob · 06/10/2007 21:40

Hi all

Loopsy, great advice!!! I might well take it! It might be the only way to endure the visit.

Aiki, I bet you're excited. It is like a new life.

RG, Wispas taste exactly the same. They are so good! And good that they haven't changed them (or made them smaller!).

Sorry so many of you have SPD. I've avoided that so far, touch wood, and heartburn. I am suddenly feeling uncomfy and v fat though. Baby's head is so low and bouncing off pelvic floor, which is kind of painful. Until now I've been quite comfy with the bump - it's annoying to find myself so uncomfy now. Still, less than a month to my due date; got to keep that in mind...

Hope all the DIY is getting done.

Have a good Sat night all!

AnnainNZ · 06/10/2007 21:51

Whoops, I clearly know nothing about rugby either cos NZ just lost....

(I don't like it either but it's hard to avoid over here. The whole country will be in mourning for the next few days now )

KaylaBmummy · 06/10/2007 21:57

RGPargy - Hi, Yes sorry meant to say 25th October not November. OMG I would die if it was 25th November my EDD is only 8th November .

RGPargy · 06/10/2007 22:39

Cape - good to know you are looking forward to the in-laws etc visiting. I can absolutely see why all your DIY would do your head in. It's bad enough that baby's room is a bomb site, but thankfully i can close the door and not actually look at it daily. It would drive me nuts! Hard wood floors sound nice. DP and I are going to have that downstairs. At the mo we have really really cheap horrible laminate stuff that was put in by the previous owners of the house. It's throughout the WHOLE house so we echo everywhere at the mo and every noise is tripled in volume. We cannot wait to put carpets down upstairs. I wont continue to bore you all with the DIY disasters that our new house contains, because i really could go on for hours lol.

I do have nesting feelings too but only when i have a burst of energy, which is mostly when i forget () that i am pg, until i try and bend over at least and then realise there's this huge bump in the way!

Jet - Mind you dont have too many fruit smoothies. You'll spend the day on the loo otherwise! It's better than chocolate tho, but not half as interesting! I never knew Robin Hood was on - not that i would have watched it anyway. Saturday night TV seems to be soooooo boring at the mo! I remember when I actually wanted to stay in because the TV was so good on a Saturday night! Fat chance now!

Choc - ooooooo fabbie re the Wispas!! I will deffo have to have one now! Really lovely melt in the mouth.... mmmmm..... I am also finding the bump to have expanded rapidly in the last week. I'm suddenly like "Ooomph! where did THAT come from?!!"

Anna - Ner ner na ner nerrrrr!!! Sorry, couldn't resist

Kayla - thought that's what you meant.

iris66 · 07/10/2007 06:38

morning all

So it's going to be England v France eh! what a turn up!! I do love a good bit of rugby (it's all those muscular shoulders )

KaylaBmummy - looks like you and I'll be delivering around the same time then . My induction date is one of the topics for the next consultant's appointment on wed.

jetgirl - lol at the pinkyponk juice that's a really good idea for LOs too (if only my DS could eat fruit )

Another old phone here I'm afraid (but I don't get why 4 years is considered old!!) My specs are much older though. I had to go for a check up recently and the optician actually sniggered as he commented on their age

The insulin's going ok (ish)I think, though I'm having to work out when to eat more, without raising my levels too high between meals, as I've had a couple of scarily low readings already . Yesterday was a bit of a pants one as I had a huge nosebleed just as I got DS into the car for us to go out and, as I'd never had one before, ended up having a bit of a panic attack on the drive . I'm hoping it had more to do with DS headbutting me 15mins earlier than high BP!

I'm hoping to have another cook in for the freezer today (stew, meatballs and cake) which will be lovely to do with mum She's staying until DH gets home now which is a bonus!
Have a good day all

thelady · 07/10/2007 09:57

iris66: it's not the shoulders that I'm watching....

Glad the insulin seems to be going OK - I'm watching closely in case I end up in the same situation. Off to be taught how to monitor blood sugar on Tuesday, but so far no advice on how to keep it stable .

Damp here in the Borders today - the first wet day we've had all week. [smug]

littleoldme · 07/10/2007 10:31

Pixie - sorry the spd is so painful. When mine is bad I find a double layer of tubigrip really helps. Also, the physio told me to do lots of kegels and deep abdominal exercises. If you google assoc of women's physiotherapists and pelvic girdle pain, you should find a link to a really helpful website. I think I put alink to it on the last thread.

Sorry to hear so many of you are having family probs. I know how it can be. My family on both sides are fantastic - apart from my dad who I haven't spoken to in 10 years but one has to be ruthless about these things.

Anna - poor old All Blacks

Iris - stuff the shoulders it's the rippling thighs I'm interested in Glad you are working out the insulin.

RG I'm with you on the laminate flooring thing. We had it on our landing. As soon as I started to show we got carpet as we both had had slippery experiences when coming out of the bathroom.
Panic not on the TV front though - Spooks is starting again soon . yay.

Lady - loved the potato story. Never knew that's why my mash is sometimes gloopy.

Right time to go. DH and I are off to Whitby for the day

fiona76 · 07/10/2007 11:57

I'm sorry I ever bought up the rugby lets not mention it again. Definately in national mouring mode

Anna- I grew in Christchurch and I have also lived in Nelson so a south islander through and through. I've been here nearly 7 years as DH is a south african and we meet here. It's been easier to stay than to decide where to end up. Is your DH a kiwi?

I hope SA win today as its my last hope...
