Lucyand2 · 25/09/2007 19:16

Congrats Bessie123, the same thing happened to me! I was convinced it was a boy but nevermind, a sister for DD is fine by me.

Beansprout-I think Bethan is a lovely name but I'm biased as my DD is called Bethany, originally Chloe but we went off that at the last minute.
I love the name Briony but I don't think we could get away with a Beth and a Briony.

Samsmam-hope you feel better soon, it is awful being ill on top of everything else!

Egg · 25/09/2007 19:37

Just a quickie to say my niece is called Bryony, it is a lovely name. She does get upset though as there are never any mugs / pens etc with her name on .

Gingermumi, don't think the olive stone should do any harm. Will probably just come out the other end .

Bessie123, big congrats on good scan and your little girl!

Samsmam, is there any way you can not go back to work until after this little one is born, or is that not an option? I imagine the worry of having to go back, and then not being well enough, makes you feel worse. Viscious circle .

Love the name Evan. I had a brief fling with a lovely Irish lad called Evan many years ago...

As for school and nursery places... we moved from Putney recently and I did have to put DS's name down for nursery back in June for him to start next Feb, and that was at the nursery of my choice. Could have got him in earlier to others but many had 6 month average waiting list. In Winchester there are lots of fab schools and it is mainly a catchment thing AFAIK. Worried though that even though we are well within catchment area for school I like, there are so many children in the area that not everyone might get in. Will make some enquiries when I can be bothered!!!!

gingermumi · 25/09/2007 20:34

thanks egg!

beansprout · 25/09/2007 20:47

I like Evan too - v v similar to ds's name.

Right, am going to watch Bringing Up Baby on C4 and burst bloodvessels when the babies are left to cry.

AKKW · 25/09/2007 20:47

Hi All.
I'm new to this place! (42 Surrey) First one, about time. Due 10th of feb, half way now. So far It's been a bit of a struggle, but slowly starting to enjoy it.
21 week scan on monday and will find out boy or girl.

Slacker, Have you checked out Ebay for the Mamacoat, $90.

CountTo10 · 25/09/2007 20:59

Can't believe I've come back to this many posts - it's taken me ages to read through it all!!!

Well, welcome to all the new people, I think it's lovely there's so many of us.

I've just got back from a lovely long wend away in Portugal with some friends. It was great, did nothing but lounge around so feel much less stressed and my pale skin has faded thank god!! It was a bit weird being away with bump - a lot of people staring but it's just made such a difference to me.

Saw midwife before I left and there was no sugar again so it was just a one off - Gingermumi - i defo think there is a link between the glucose appearing in your urine and stress as mine turned up after a very difficult couple of weeks and I hadn't actually eaten that much sugar at all. Had my scan today and everything is ok with baby - it was so weird as the detail is so much clearer than with ds. Saw the inside of the heart and spine etc and eye sockets which was a bit weird!! Didn't find out which flavour though i was sorely tempted!!! Size and everything fit with my dates so that was reassuring as I've had a few comments recently about being quite small fo my dates.

On the pushchair and names front, I've gone for a Pliko pramette and kiddyboard this time round as the buggy I've got has bugger all shopping space and I wanted a proper 'pram' type scenario for bubs at the beginning. On the names, I wonder if we'll ever have one as we just can't decide. I like Olivia, Amelie, Cate & Rhiannon for a girl or Harrison, Benjamin, Dylan or Jude for a boy - so lots of discussions still to be had!!!

Hope everyone is well x

bovrilsarnies · 25/09/2007 22:06

Congratulations on your good scan Bessie - and a girl eh??? see i am convinced that mine is a girl, which is one of the reasons I was thinking about finding out the sex at my 20 week scan - it would take some getting used to the idea of it being a boy - not that I mind really - it's just there are few boys in our family - and of course the important thing is that the LO is born safe and healthy!!

Samsmam -Sciatica you poor thing. It's suposed to be really quite painfull! take care of yourself.

Gingermumi - I found Tranquility tea here:www.goodnessdirect.co.uk/cgi-local/frameset/detail/426096.html

KikiH - Totally agree about feeling like you've swallowed a football.
I have seen those huge pillows in mothercare - but I get the impression from others that Mothercare is overpriced for everything! so it would be worth shopping around a bit.

I love all the names - especially Evan - unfortunately that one is taken by DP's cousin. will have to start searching the net for new and interesting Welsh names!! The other problem is knowing how to pronounce the unfarmiliar names - and I wouldn't want to burden LO with a name that no one can pronounce! especially me!!

samsmam · 26/09/2007 08:08

AKKW- Welcome to a large group of friendly people.

Egg- The only way that I will not have to go back until after baby is born is if the GP keeps signing me off- I work for the NHS and I don't see any other way. I am going to be leaving for good when I start maternity leave as I have to travel 1.5-2 hours EACH way. I will then look for something nearer home. I do wish there was some other way the longer I stay away the more stressed I am getting. IYSWIM.

All this talk of baby names- there are so many lovely names out there I am beginning to change my mind!

Do you think it is possible that if only I found out the flavour of this baby (DP doesn't want to know) I would be able to keep it to myself until Feb?? I really want to know.

Egg · 26/09/2007 08:12

Morning All. I have decided that me feeling crap is linked to me eating too much choc. Am going to try to wean myself off it...

Watching Bringing Up Baby from last night. Only half concentrating on it as DS keeps shouting "La La" because he wants Tubbies but DID I JUST HEAR that one lady thinks you should not even touch your baby in between four hourly feeds??? Do they get no playtime? What if they poo? Hellllloooooooooo? Am sure there is a big discussion thread on this, have not looked yet.

Countto10 - we are off to Portugal on Saturday! Whereabouts were you? Was it lovely? Have not been before. I cannot wait. I am so pale I am blue and normally get a bit of fake tan done before i go but have not bothered with anything. I will look such a sight in my bikini anyway that people will stare no matter what!

Egg · 26/09/2007 08:22

Sorry forgot to say welcome to new member AKKW! Hope you manage to keep up with us, I am still forgetting who is who and who is having what and when!

Samsmam, did not see your post before i posted. 1.5 hours EACH WAY? That's enough to depress anyone . My DH does it but he is not pregnant... Have you always done it or did you move since taking the job? DH has a long commute as he gets paid a lot more working in London, but we have since moved out.

Right, really must get on and give DS some breakfast. He has been asking for kitkat... Since 7:30am!!! I hasten to add he has never had a kitkat for breakfast .

braid · 26/09/2007 09:29

Just an up date on me particularly for Violeta and RoseQuartz.
I had my early anomaly scan yesterday and no soft markers were found for Down's. So I'm not having the amnio and I think I will begin to enjoy this pregnancy more now.
Biggest surprise is the babe's a boy. I have two girls so I just expected to have another. We'd be very happy either way but I'm curious about a wee boy. Thanks for all the good wishes from everyone. It is an enormous relief.

violeta · 26/09/2007 09:47

braid: I am so happy for you that the anomaly scan showed no problems. That's great news! I know what you mean exactly about being able to relax now - after mine, I felt I could tell another round of people who I hadn't told before as it all felt more secure. Congrats also on hearing that it's a boy! That's the huge advantage of having this scan earlier as you find out the sex earlier as well! So, when are you due in Feb? Cut and paste your details on the list if you fancy. Enough of this lurking!

rosequartz: Any news? Been thinking of you.

Welcome also to AKKW and any other recent new people I may have missed. We are certainly getting bigger (both on the list front and the bellies, I suspect!)

Egg: Didn't manage to see Bringing up baby last night, but from what you say I think it's just as well as it would have infuriated me! It's a series though I think so I'll try to watch the next one.

Top of our names list at the moment are Sofia, Sophie, Colette and Amelie. But there's plenty of time left yet and all may change!

Hope everyone has a good day.

samsmam · 26/09/2007 10:00

I have always communted for that length of time into London not to mention the 40 or so steps at the other end and no lift!- I have worked there for ten years.
It doesn't help when I get texts from work collegues saying I wouldn't come back its terrible here. Great, as if I wasn't depressed enough.

I watched bringing up baby and what is that putting a baby in bed at 7pm, shutting the door and not entering again till 7am all about?

Gill79 · 26/09/2007 10:27

Anyone that missed Bringing Up Baby there's a (very big and angry) thread here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/2000/389133

Phew. and here's a little synopsis of the woman in question's opinions which I have already sent to dp this morning as I was too tired to rant when he came home last night. Am well aware that as a first-timer I am probably a bit naiive. but this advice seems to be all about having babies for people that don't want babies.

There is no reason why babies should be tuoched or cuddled - all they want is to be left alone to grow.
You shouldn't touch them between feeds.
You shouldn't feed them between 7pm and 7am. Or go to them if they cry. Ever.
You should hold them away from your body when feeding so they can't cuddle.
You should keep them outside!!!!! Put them out in the garden for the four hours between feeds. Shut the door and leave them. (this I guess is so you can get back to making biscuits for the church fete or instructing your domestic staff) This one couple that were following this woman's routine - first night home with the new baby, the baby is alone upstairs all night while they sit downstairs and drink a bottle of wine. And that's a success.
In this other family the older sister was upset and couldn't understand they weren't allowed to pick the baby up - "because we're not supposed to cuddle the baby" said dad.

widgetsmummy · 26/09/2007 10:36

hello all, would like to join in.

am first time mummy (26 Milton Keynes) due 11 Feb. got 20 week scan this afternoon and am feeling a little sick. lost one little baby beginning of this year and we were so pleased to get to 12 weeks this time and hear that little heartbeat that we've gone along thinking everything is now fine...

3pm seems a long way away! just want to know that widget is ok... might cry! I guess sonographers keep tissues handy!

Gill79 · 26/09/2007 10:40

ooohhh good luck widgetsmummy - it's such a long time to wait between scans isn't it?

lljkk · 26/09/2007 10:45

Oh am I glad I missed that tv programme, those attitudes are truly disgusting.

widgetsmummy · 26/09/2007 10:47

Did/has anyone chosen not found out the sex? We want to keep it a surprise but I've heard sometimes, espcially if its a boy, it can be really obvious!

alkar · 26/09/2007 10:49

Congratulations on the good scan news countto10, bessie and braid and good luck to akkw for yours on Monday.

I measured my waist the oher day and it is 36inches I was a size 10 and I am 21 weeks now.

Hope you feel better soon samsmam, lots of changes going on in every NHS hospital I think my job will be very different when I go back after maternity leave, have heard rumours that we will have to work permanent night shifts which DH isn't happy about but I have spent years training for this job and don't want to give it up to do something totally different.

alkar · 26/09/2007 10:53

Gill79 completely agree about bringing up baby I am a first timer too and maybe I will change my mind but you have a baby because you want one and you shouldn't treat it as an inconvenience!!!

Widgetsmummy good luck for later today x

Jo9977 · 26/09/2007 11:32

Thinking of you widgetsmummy for today and really hope everything's fine. Don't be afraid to ask them to check stuff again and point it out to you if you want more reassurance and to see for yourself, I would guess it must be tempting for them to rush through the scan, tick off their boxes and move on...but it's your baby and IMPORTANT!!!

Let us know how you get on and until then...keep busy!

Jo9977 · 26/09/2007 11:34

Fantastic news on all the scans everyone! So pleased we've had good news after good news!!!

Jo9977 · 26/09/2007 11:36

Oh, and welcome AKKW!!! Good to have you with us!!!!

minxy125 · 26/09/2007 11:41

Hi everyone just wondered if I could join in the fun too?? I am in the same boat as widgetsmummy having had a m/c in april at 11 wks, still pinching myself even now I have got to 20 weeks, I am due 12th Feb. This is the second bubba, already have a DS who is 2.3. I am also having my scan today at 3 so am feeling a little anxious, although I keep having family and friends telling me not to be so silly and things will be fine!! So in a nutshell thats me!! I look forward to sharing everyone journey and getting to know you all!!

saskia71 · 26/09/2007 12:26

Hello,

I saw that 'Bringing up baby' programme too last night. The 50's method seemed very restrictive, and dare I say it, a bit cruel. The 70's Continuum method seemed awfully 'worthy', but how practical is it to carry a baby around in a sling all day? Common sense seemed to prevail in the 60's Spock method.

Good luck to all the people having scans. The 20 week scan is so exciting.

I sorted out some antenatal classes in early Nov (at 28 weeks), and am off to my tennis club for a spot of exercise and lunch.
