Ach, I just posted on the other thread. Silly girl.

Thanks for doing a new one.

Lucyand2 · 17/09/2007 14:31

Hello,
Thankyou for all the suggestions! I'll be trying Gaviscon very soon!
I had my scan this morning and it was really nice. Baby was moving around lots and refused to keep still, we eventually found out that my boy predictions were completely wrong and it's another girl! I hadn't even bothered thinking of any girls names yet so I'll have to get my naming books out again.
The only blip in the scan was the part where they looked at my blood supply on each side and it really hurt as she squashed really hard! I felt a bit faint but it was over soon enough thank goodness.
Has anyone else had this or could it be related to my early bleeding as they didn't look at this last time?

Bessie123 · 17/09/2007 14:37

Lucyand2, I'm convinced mine is a boy. Will find out next week

Egg · 17/09/2007 14:50

Now I dont know which thread to post on......

The only reason we should use the other one is that it has a link from the old one, so prob more people will find it later if we drop off active convos.

Three sleeps til BEAN FLAVOUR TIME!

Egg · 17/09/2007 14:51

Oh and congrats on baby girl Lucy2! No idea about the blood supply thing tho...

LadySanders · 17/09/2007 15:01

hello, i'm new and don't exactly know how these antenatal club things work... due 1st feb... son number 2... currently wondering why half the people i meet seem upset at how small my bump is (quote from yesterday, "you don't even look pregnant from behind",err, maybe that's cos my bottom is not pregnant?) and the other half keep saying "ooh, so big already and only 20 weeks!". am i allowed to punch people on the nose and blame hormones?

ladlemonke · 17/09/2007 15:05

Oh sorry sorry miniandme and everyone, i've gorn and made another thread, didn't realise you were already on to it mini. I'll post a link for this one on the other one ( already confusing!!) BTW the other one is
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/2290/389949?rnd=1190036715061

Does anyone know if we can join them? Or maybe should just delete the other one?

ladlemonke · 17/09/2007 15:07

Yes, i'd say you are allowed and perfectly justified LadySanders , welcome!

Egg · 17/09/2007 15:08

Hehe! I spent a lot of my last pregnancy getting comments on how tiny my baby must be, with a few people saying "wow, look at the size of you, you're huge!". He was 7lbs 8 so completely average.

This time I am 20 weeks pg with twins and have only had people saying things like "where are you hiding them" as I am not very big.

I think now that Ladlemonke has linked to other thread we should just use that one, if miniandme is not offended...

LadySanders · 17/09/2007 15:11

although, curiously, my ANKLES do appear to be pregnant. in fact they appear to belong to a person completely other than me.

RoseQuartz · 17/09/2007 15:17

Hi there everyone,
Sorry not posted lately, we seem to have to face one problem after another these days.

Hope all is well with you lot.

On top of everything that's happened, my bloods have come back as having a 1;165 chance of baby having chromosomal abnormalities....have been offered amnio, what are your experiences of this please, and also if you didn't have the amnio, were you offered any other tests instead?

thanks

violeta · 17/09/2007 16:30

Hi RoseQuartz: You've been through the mill and back recently, huh?
How old are you? This often has some bearing on the figures. I went through the same thing (1/240) and last week had an earlier anomaly scan (at 17 weeks) because I didn't want to rush into anything. Can your hospital offer you the same thing? For me, they looked for markers which could suggest abnormalities and thankfully in my case they didn't find anything. I'm content with that, and am not going to do anything else. They would have offered me the amnio if they had found anything, though I was never truly happy about it because of the risk of miscarrying. The other bonus of an earlier scan is you find out the sex earlier! (if you want to of course!)

I would also recommend finding out about the blood tests and your results as much as possible. Can you talk to a consultant about your results? What was high? What was low? In my case, my HCG was high which seemingly skewed the results. These things are never completely reliable in my opinion. Also, work your figure out as a percentage. That really helped me to put the whole thing into perspective.

Good luck on what you decide. I can just imagine what you're going through. All the very best.

miniandme · 17/09/2007 17:11

Egg we've only 2 more sleeps till we find out bean flavours!!! You must be the day after us then, how exciting !!

OP posts:
Egg · 17/09/2007 17:33

I know! I am a little that you find out a day before me... Hehe. What time is yours? Do you have any preference?

beansprout · 17/09/2007 17:38

Rosequartz - sorry, I don't have anything to add other than I hope you are ok and that you get the support and information you need.

We have decided not to ask the flavour (dh feels strongly and I can wait) - is anyone else not asking? Am still dying to know what the rest of you are having!!

Egg · 17/09/2007 17:49

Sorry RoseQuartz, so wrapped up in my own little world... Also no advice as fortunately our results turned up a low risk, but I had a friend who, although had a low risk from nuchal scan, also had a blood test done that showed a high risk for Downs. They decided against Amnio / CVS and thankfully all looked ok at their anomoly scan at 20 weeks. I really am not sure what i would do. My DH would, from what I gather, be adamant that we have amnio as he doesn't feel he is capable of bringing up a child with Downs, whereas, if it was entirely down to me, I might rather not know as not sure I would be able to do anything about it if the tests did show a problem. I have seen threads where people are in a similar situation and have asked advice, so maybe try searching the archives?

Beany, I am just too nosey and too impatient to wait. I can hardly contain myself waiting another three days, let alone another 18 or so weeks!

Egg · 17/09/2007 17:50

Forgot to add that my friend with the high risk blood test results went on to have a very healthy boy.

beansprout · 17/09/2007 18:52

I am nosey enough to ask but dh really doesn't want to, so I suppose I will find out soon enough! I quite like the "it's a boy/girl" moment when they are born though. I also like the guessing, and the fact that the pregnancy feels like baby's secret time - or does that sound like a load of old hippy guff?!!

Egg · 17/09/2007 18:58

Hippyyyyyyyyyyyyy. Just kidding, I know lots of people who thought i was ruining the surprise by finding out DS's sex, but I just would not have been able to wait. I think if DH was really really against finding out we would have to toss a coin as to who "won".

Oh CBeebies has finished for the day, suppose I had better do some parenting....

RoseQuartz · 17/09/2007 19:10

violeta and all who replied, first of all thanks a lot for your help.
I am 37 btw, but not sure how much that influences it really as have younger friend and both times she had 1 in 72 and then 1 in 77 chance, had the amnio both times, and all was well so now has two healthy little girls.
You know the scan you mentioned at 17 weeks, anomaly scan?? could that be done at 18 plus weeks as well, and also how much can they actually 'see' ie how accurate was yours in detecting abnormalities do you reckon? Surely it has to be better than just sitting at home worrying oneself silly about it though.

miniandme · 17/09/2007 20:08

My scan is at 1pm on wednesday,we need to find summit to do once the kids are dropped at school to keep from going nuts waiting for 1pm to come round
I already have 2 boys and a girl but would like 2 little girls just for the twin factor of having both the same lol!!Got enough of boys with the 2 i have but somethign tells me that im having a bit of both ,with twin 1 on my right being the little boy,all will be revealed by 2.30 wednesday !!

Bambiraptor · 17/09/2007 20:08

Sorry you are having more worrying times Rosequartz. My doctor told me that an increased risk of chromosomal abnormalities only applies when you are over 38.
I am sure evrything will be OK. If I were you I would definately get an early scan to put your mind at rest.

I can't wait for my scan now on October 9th. I am definatley finding out the sex of the baby.
Has anyone done that Chinese fortune baby predictor thing?

violeta · 17/09/2007 20:17

Hi RoseQuartz:
I think the age factor does have a bearing; as far as I am aware, they take the blood test results, the nuchal fold result (did you have that? Was it within the normal range?) and then add age and weight apparently into the mix. Statistically, your risk does go up from 35 onwards (I'm 35 and that probably affected my result). I don't know what the age related risk alone is when you're 37 but if you google it you should find it quite easily.

I was offered an anomaly scan from 16 weeks -I guess it's from that point onwards that they can detect abnormalities if they're present. Much, I gather, can also be established from the 12 week scan - I presume all was okay then? Really what I had I will have again at 21 weeks when I have my 'proper' 20 week scan - as it is an extra scan I'm sure they can do it at any point. Another poster here, braid, also has been offered the same thing around the same time I think.

At my scan, they measured everything just to check the baby is growing as it should and then the doctor spent ages looking at the organs, etc for what they term as markers. The whole process took about half an hour or so. The consultant was happy with what she saw, so in answer to your question I would say that if everything was clear at this stage (18 weeks for you), you could rest easily.

Have a word with your consultant - hopefully they'll offer you this anyway before any amnio. All the best of luck.

Hungrymama · 17/09/2007 20:49

Rosequartz - hello there chick! I'm in exactly the same position as you. I'm 18 (and a half!!!) weeks, 36 and have been given a 1 in 167 chance. My anomoly scan (usually at around 20 weeks) has been brought forward to 19 weeks so will be on this Thurs.
It's perhaps worth remembering that the risk of miscarriage with amnio is about 1 in 100 and (I think) worse than that for CVS - but my figures may be a little inaccurate so google it or go on www.babycentre.com to find out.
I've been on a bit of an emotional rollercoaster over it all but found some exceptionally helpful threads (check out the one started by KatyH asking for advice from parents of children with DS). Am now just looking forward to seeing my little Tiddler frog and am hoping all is well.
Give yourself time to get your head around it all and hold onto the fact that a) a child with DS is not the end of the world by any stretch of the imagination and b) statistics are only that - you'll find loads of contradictions out there!
On a different note - have you felt yours move yet? Think there was a mini kick a few days ago but nothing much to report since then. So much for feeling things much earlier second time round!

braid · 17/09/2007 20:53

RoseQuartz, sorry you are having a worrying time. As Vioetta said I know all about it too. So glad you had a good scan result Violetta.

I had a 1:186 risk from my nuchal scan. My age risk (I'm 40) is 1:75. So the nuchal was better but still within what the NHS view as quite high risk. I'm having an early anomaly scan next week when I'll be 18 weeks. I haven't had an ammio yet becase of the 1:100 risk of miscarriage. However if the anomaly scan produces soft makers then I will have the amnio because I will proabably act if its a positive result for Downs.

What I'm aware of is that the anomaly scan only gives you another risk assessment. Nothing other than the CVS or amnio or I suppose the child arriving will tell you for certain. I have heard numerous stories about soft markers coming up at scans and then children without Downs being born.

For me if the markers produce a risk of something higher than 1:100 it will be worth risking the amnio then. Hope this helps you.

When I first got my result I spent ages searching the internet. I've now settled with my decisions so far, bought some maternity gear and I have a very public bump now. I find the congratulations difficult to take as I don't know what lies ahead but I've concluded I will be very unlucky to be that 1 in 186 person.

Good luck with it all.
