Hi all - welcome to all who have joined us and congratulations on the recent scans. Good luck for those of you with imminent scans!!

Widgetsmummy - I am pregnant with my third boy. Didn't find out sex first 2 times and really had no idea from the scan. Decided to find out this time and once it was pointed out it was really obvious. Had it not been pointed out I think we would have been none the wiser once again.

Samsmam - We have decided not to tell anyone else the sex of our lo but there's no way I could have kept it from DH for the next 4 and a bit months!!

Didn't watch that programme last night but sounds like a load of nonsense from what you've all said! Leave a baby outside in between feeds - that's just crazy - I shudder to think what could happen to her poor baby! Doesn't she watch the news!! And leave baby in room from 7pm to 7am without going to it if it cries - that's barbaric. At the end of the day I feel sorry for her and her baby as she is missing out on so much by having no physical contact and cuddles - I can't wait to hold my little one! Both of my ds's are very cuddly and I love that aspect of being a mum! I think it's just as well I didn't see it as I think it would just have infuriated me!!!

widgetsmummy · 26/09/2007 12:57

hello minxy125 - if you are still here, good luck at 3pm. I'm trying to decide how late I can fit in the last wee! my bladder feels half the size it was last time, not sure how much I can hold!

Egg · 26/09/2007 13:11

Hi Widget and Minxy and best of luck for 3pm. Nice that you are going at the same time! Even though I saw everything was ok at 12 week scan I was still terrified before 20 week scan, they took aaaaages going over everything, and thankfully all was well. Am sure you will both be fine but I have never had a MC so imagine it makes the worrying doubly hard.

I was desperate to find out the sex of my twins, and my DS two years ago, but have to be honest I would not have been able to tell if they hadn't hovered over that area and pointed out the bits to me. I even thought I saw a willy on the girl but it was the umbilical cord , thought only silly people in films etc did that!

Bessie123 · 26/09/2007 13:24

Good luck Minxy and widgetsmummy - hope the scan goes well, and make sure you report back.

My parents carried me around in a sling in the late 70s, although I wasn't breast fed after the first 6 weeks.

Egg · 26/09/2007 13:37

I wonder what you do if you have twins and want to use the continuum method? Do you strap one to the back and one to the front? And as for triplets?

pobletsmum · 26/09/2007 13:49

egg- maybe double decker in the sling!!!

So many scans and so much good news. Congratulations everyone who has had their scan and good luck to those of you who are having them this week (most seem to be at 3pm today, or is it only getsmummy & minxy?). Best of luck anyway!

gingermumi · 26/09/2007 14:24

Thanks for info on tranquilty tea. Saw Bringing up baby - definitely seemed cruel to leave a new born like that, distressing for mum and baby and, as far as i'm concerned not at all natural. agree that Spoc method seems most reasonable and is pretty much what i did with other two. Obviously routine and boundaries are sensible as the LO gets bigger but near- neglect of such a wee one is madness!

Welcome to Minxy, Widgetsmum and Braid. Hope scans all go well.

Egg · 26/09/2007 14:53

With DS I think I did carry on going in whenever he cried for way too long, and he was a crap sleeper because I never left him to cry. Once we got a bit tougher (thankfully never had to actually do controlled crying) he slept much better and life was sooooo much nicer. Poor Nemo and Dory will get ignored a lot more, just because there are two of them so if I am busy with one, the other will have to wait. I wont be putting them in the garden in the freezing cold while I sit inside with a nice cup of tea though!!!

surreygirl · 26/09/2007 15:58

Just had my 20 week scan (due 7/2) and all ok. Was convinced the baby was a girl, we both were, but it's a boy! Really don't mind, just happy it's healthy as this is our first one.

KikiH · 26/09/2007 16:00

I saw Bringing up Baby too and can't belief some of the stuff they were talking about either. Routine is one thing, but not touching your child in between feeds? Surely babys need to feel loved too!

The 70's method seemed a bit strange, I did wonder how it would be possible to maintain constant contact if you had to go somewhere in the car! Unless you did a "Britney".

Hope all is well at the scans widgetsmum and minxy.

alkar · 26/09/2007 16:13

Congrats on the scan surreygirl - how many boys do we have now?!?

beansprout · 26/09/2007 16:59

Welcome to the new people and congratulations to everyone who has had their scan!

Am bemused by the "parenting"method that dictates that you don't cuddle a newborn. Human babies emerge too early (trade off for us being bipeds with big brains) and need very close care for the first few months. To train a baby that its fundamental needs won't be met just to suit the parents seems very, very odd (at best).

Anyway, quite fancy one of those slings, they just look so snug! From my day to day observations I have to say that I see a lot of babies crying in pushchairs and not so many crying in slings, so for that practical (and hopefully peaceful!) reason alone, I think I am going to invest in one this time. We had a baby bjorn for ds but because his size and my c-section meant that it wasn't a lot of good really, and of course, it isn't a proper sling anyway.

Off to knit some lentils now....

pobletsmum · 26/09/2007 17:27

egg - double decker wasn't far off if you look at the 2nd picture on this link

LOL at beansprout knitting her lentils

Congratulations on the scan results surreygirl. Let's hope it will be good news from widgetsmummy (sorry for ealier 'getsmummy' error) and minxy too...

pobletsmum · 26/09/2007 17:28

As DS would say that sling is a bit of a 'squash and a squeeze'!

Egg · 26/09/2007 17:31

LOL at that link. Sorry but I struggled carrying DS after he got past about 10lbs! Saying that, had a Baby Bjorn also and think those slings they had last night might be more comfy. However I will not be trying to carry both, even though it would solve the prob of getting through the front door (would probably knock one of their heads off coming in like that anyway ).

Hope we get some good news from the 3pm girls soon. Might have to wait til tomorrow if they only get on MN at work.

beansprout · 26/09/2007 17:35

lol at "3pm girls"!

Ds has just eaten a huge tea and is now running around in circles like a whirling dervish. Oh good.

Amy78 · 26/09/2007 20:19

OMG! Can't believe how many messages there are after only 2 days away. Computer at home has bitten the dust so am sitting here at work catching up - the joys of getting called in to cover a night shift!

Gingermumi - make the most of missing the inspection. We're expecting the little brown box from HMIe to drop through the school letterbox any day now. With any luck they won't be arriving til after Christmas!

My pal has a DD named Arwen. Thought it was a lovely choice from her DH. However, after the Christening she discovered it was a character from Lord of the Rings! Didn't go down too well when she found out!!

Congratulations on all the good news about scans.

gingermumi · 27/09/2007 11:38

Amy78 - am so glad to be missing it - had full inspection a couple of years ago and it was really stressful. This one is just a 'light touch', but even so was not looking forward to it at all - it is just one more stress which I don't need. Hope yours waits until after christmas!

gingermumi · 27/09/2007 11:39

Wonder how widegtsmummy is?

samsmam · 27/09/2007 11:42

I've just found out that my anomoly scan isn't going to be until about 22+5 days-NHS. I found a private place that will do it for £70 as 23 weeks is the cut off point for scanning should I go for the private one at 20 weeks? It just seems really late if there is anything wrong.

I got my risk back for downs and spina bifida and it was 1:9552, DD1 was 1:658 seems a bit odd to have changed so much. I thought the risk went up as you got older.

Just been to toys r us to buy DD1 her 1st birthday presents, so much for me to play with.

widgetsmummy · 27/09/2007 12:11

Thanks for the wishes and sorry to make you all wait - but widget is all fine, measured with long legs (thanks DH) and a big belly!!!! Not sure what that means???? Maybe its natures way of saying lay off the chocolate buttons????! We don't know the sex and it was certainly not obvious so its still a surprise for us! I have to admit seeing LO again yesterday left me in a little shock. They are so well formed and it hit me "WE ARA HAVING A BABY!" My DH would also have been excited but was distracted by Halo3... its gonna be a quiet weekend for me!

Thanks again!

Love one of the 3pm girls! x

saskia71 · 27/09/2007 14:01

Samsmum, did you have the integrated test (performed in two stages, ~ week 12 and week 15/16)? If so, this may explain the difference since the algorithms (used for risk calculation) use a number of blood markers, in addition to maternal age. The blood markers vary from pregnancy to pregnancy.

Secretary just sent me this. Why would you show that link to a pregnant woman??
