Can anyone tell me what to expect when i go for my first scan?
Im excited but im a little nervous too

Mollyfloss · 06/09/2007 12:49

Kel01 - if your first scan is at week 12 then as far as I know they will be able to tell you how the pregnancy is going. By week 12, I think all the organs are formed and so most people wait until their week 12 before going public with their pregnancy because after week 12 the risk of mc decreases dramatically. Also, if you want your week 12 scan can be a screening test (nuchal scan) for assessing whether your baby is likely to have Down's syndrome. Depending on your age the chance of downs is 1 in so many hundreds or thousands. The nuchal scan can give you a better idea of the chances of the baby being downs. If there is a high chance then further investigation can be done but this is fairly rare.

www.babyworld.co.uk/tools/gender_predictor/default.asp

loisstella · 06/09/2007 13:51

hehe - well according to that I'm having a girl!
I'll update you in about 12 weeks - because I totally nwat to know what we're having!

V1KK1M · 06/09/2007 14:00

Hi All and welcome to everyone new.

I had a strange dream that I pulled the baby out (umbilical cord and all) so I could have a look at it and make sure that it was all ok. Then when I was happy I had to put it back which got very graphic

Does anyone suffer from migraines? I normally only get them when I am really tired but I woke up in the eraly hours of this morning with cronic heatburn and a headache and as the night when on it became a migraine.

I really didn't want to but I have now taken too paracetamols as I thought I was doing more harm sitting there in terrible pain.

Does anyone have any good methods to get rid of a migraine?

And thanks for the back advice. It seams a lot better after a few days rest and I thought I would mention it to the midwife at my booking appointment on 24th Sept.

MrsThreads · 06/09/2007 14:03

I am having a girl as well according to the predictor We will have to wait and see

xx

mirry · 06/09/2007 14:15

sorry to hear about the migraines V1KK1M - I used to get them and it's miserable. I've been getting pretty bad headaches since being pg (though not migraines), which paracetemol don't seem to touch.

I've found that steaming over some olbas oil really helps, someone told me that most pg headaches are to do with congestion. anyway it definitely sorts me out.

sagitta · 06/09/2007 14:17

Thanks very much Soph73 - that's what I was hoping for.
Tried the chocolate thing in bid to make me / bean a bit happier, but it just made me feel very sick

Do I understand from all these posts that first scan is at 12 wks? Do they do any checks before to find out if all is well?

Not all areas do a scan at 12 weeks some do and some don't. If they do then you'd normally have another scan at around 20 weeks, but you might be in an area that only does a single scan (in which case it would probably be somewhere around 16-20 weeks). Several of us on this thread have paid for private scans before the NHS ones to check that all's going well so far they are available in a lot of areas but, of course, it's all extra money.

I'm not keen on chocolate at the moment either -- I suspect that will change once I get out of the first trimester, though, so I'll have to make up for lost happiness-time...

Soph73 · 06/09/2007 15:11

I´m having a girl too according to that. I don´t get headaches/migraines but do get pregnant rhinitus, which means I snore like a steam train (very attractive which means I get my own back on hubby

aprilfoolsbaby · 06/09/2007 16:43

Hello All,
I had my scan on Tuesday and it seems the April Fool's baby is now actually due on March 30th! I'm going to hop onto the March thread though will keep an eye on this one too.
Good luck to all of you

KnitterInTheNW · 06/09/2007 19:22

V1KK1M, when I 1st got pg I asked my gp about all the diff meds I take for various things. One of them is migralieve which I take occasionally, and she said it's fine as long as it's all the time. The active ingredients are paracetamol which are safe, and something else which she looked up while I was there. I haven't had to take any yet while pg but won't hesitate to if a migraine starts.

KnitterInTheNW · 06/09/2007 19:28

as long as it's not all the time!

modsaluk · 06/09/2007 20:59

Hi all hope you are all well, i have done the predictor test and it says i am having a girl, which is what i would hope for this time but whatever sex is good, i can not really send it back can i lol .

I have forgotton to take my folic acid for 5 days, can i take more than one at once to catch up or should i just continue to take the one a day ?

Sally

Fleecy · 06/09/2007 21:12

I haven't been on for ages so have spent this evening catching up. It's nice to know I'm not the only one getting all spotty!

And my belly has popped right out too. I'd just got back into shape after DD1 (she'll be one in a couple of weeks) and now I'm looking all fat again. Sigh.

I'm 9+3 but haven't got my scan date through yet - don't know how I'm going to hide it from friends for another few weeks when my tummy's expanding so rapidly. Anyone else struggling to keep it a secret due to size?

micegg · 06/09/2007 21:27

Evening all,

I am spotty and fat if that makes anyone feel any better. Dh told me I am eating too much . Thanks for that then! To be honest he may have a point.I put on weight with DD and only recently lost it. Never want to feel that wretched again so have decided to use this pregnancy to transform myself into a goddess {hmm]. I am going to eat really healthily, only fruit between meals and 3 healthy low fat meals a day, vitamin tab daily and splurge on some skin care products. Watch this space.

On a bright note I am no longer feeling so sick.

BabyBratt · 06/09/2007 22:09

Hi I have not been on for a while, I am still paranoid that something will go wrong.

I will join all of you in that fat, spotty club. I look awful my belly seems bloated but the scales are saying I have lost weight but my clothes are definitely tighter!!!

I am sick at least twice a day!! but I am managing to keep fish fingers down.

I am 7 + 5 now and I have still not seen a midwife because my receptionist are insisting on a positive urine test by the surgery. I handed the sample in over a week ago and the result is still not back.

V1KK1M · 07/09/2007 07:08

Thanks for the advice KINW. I ended up taking 2 anadin extra with a long relaxinf bath last night as it is the only thing that ever gets rid of them and so far it has worked! (Although I woke up this am at 5:45 and didn't want to go back to sleep in case it returned)

I am getting bigger and can't hold it in much more (I'm 10+2 today). Mine may have been due to a haribo addiction in the first few weeks but I am trying to take it easy on the weight thing now. I dieted really hard to loose 4 stone 2 years ago and can't use this as an excuse to put on weight!

Just to let you all know that I have also go some fantastic bargains on ebay for maternity clothes. I'm a size 14/16 and have brought 2 large bundles (one for £35 and the other for £15 inc postage) which has all next, mothercare and blooming marveloous clothes in It actually makes me feel much better wearing clothes that fit

Anyway I'm off to sort out my 2 British Bulldogs - another worry for when Clive (aka the bean) gets here but that can be discussed later.

Hope you all have a good day and everyone is not feeling too bad

EllieG · 07/09/2007 08:51

Hey all - I talked to my pal yesterday and apparently because of previous MC I can get an early scan really easily, so am going to ask for one when I see the doc for my blood tests on tues. So fingers crossed and I might get ot see the beanie alive and kicking next week!

OP posts:
MrsThreads · 07/09/2007 10:08

Hi all

Ellie - you will be able to get an earlier scan next Tuesday - your doc should offer you one with your m/c history. I had one at 6 weeks and another at 8 weeks and I have another next Friday at 10 weeks. You will be closely monitored.

Hope you are all feeling OK - are any of you starting to 'bloom' yet? I reckon that is a myth

Anyway I hope you have a lovely weekend and all get some rest.

Take care
Natx

Kel01 · 07/09/2007 10:20

Morning everybody!
I dont suppose anyone can make me feel like im not a big fat pig??
Im constantly hungry!

loisstella · 07/09/2007 10:28

I've gotten more and more nervous about MCing.
My nauseousness has gone down and my boobs aren't so sore anymore... which a week ago was all I was wishing for - now I want it back.
I also seem to have some tummie cramps and it hurts when I lie on my back and bend (i.e. to reach for abook or something).

DH is starting to get really excited tohugh and we have started telling people. I keep saying; 'well if I miscarry I would want to be able to tell people' but am secretely scared to be jinxing things.

Up and down the roller coaster as far as emotions are concerned - which again makes me think i'm probably still very preggers.

Anybody else feeling a little lost today?
