Due March 2008 - another teeny tiny thread for dial ups and mobiles

Welcome. It seems that when we get to over 400 hundred posts then dial ups and mobiles can't handle loading the threads well. Sweetkitty, I hope this helps. xx

Howdy all

welcome tall mother - don't mind us, we're not usually such a moany lot. this week has been funny that way. I'm still laughing at WinkyGirl's idea of us all lying about barely able to summon a "hello".

studentmum, I'm so pleased to hear your news. that's great.

LoveandSqualor, you lucky thing, that sounds amazing.

yardette, i hear you on the renovations. we're in the same situation. luckily we have a loft that I hide away in while DH labours away. I might have asked for the risotto though but maybe not.

tonight I joined a choir and it was super fun. I was so tired all day but I just decided to go anyway and see and I really enjoyed it and forgot all about my fatigue (well mostly). I guess I was pre-taking yardette's advice about not wishing first trimester away.

as for the NHS postcode lottery. I'm new to the NHS and it freaks me out. I always thought such complaints were made up but in fact they blatantly give you different treatments in different areas. So weird.

Morning ladies! How are you all today?

I had a lovely restful afternoon and went to bed at 9pm, but couldn't get to sleep until after 11pm. Very annoying! I'm not as tired today but still feeling very pukey and not at all right. We'll see how work goes today. I can't keep taking time off just cos I feel a bit sick... I might end up off for weeks if I do that!! I might have to tell a couple more people that I'm pg through, so they don't think I'm just being completely useless!

Morning all!

studentmum, that's wonderful - I'm very happy for you.

Still on a bit of a high from yesterday, but like everyone else I really feel as if symptoms have suddenly started kicking in. Absolutely shattered today - derah, I couldn't sleep last night either, most annoying. yardette and skidoodle - huge sympathies on the renovations. We have about three things I'd like to do in the next seven months - changing a carpet, a bit of plastering, new tiles on the kitchen floor - and even that feels completely unmanageable at the minute! Looking forward to a serious burst of second trimester energy in a month's time ...

have great days, one and all.

Hi all - I haven't been on for ages since I added my details as I have been trying to forget this is all happening to avoid the fear of things going wrong and hope to make time pass quicker

Everything is going fine though apart from the same flagging tiredness as everyone else! Just got date for the first scan too - 24 August which is exactly 12 weeks That includes nuchal scan too.

Hope everyone else is doing well!!

Afternoon all
Well, I felt like a million dollars when I got up this morning - I went to bed at 9pm and woke up (late) at 8am!!
Unfortunately, this meant I was very late for work. My boss is giving me such a hard time about all sorts of stuff at the moment, and we're all really busy, so I've had hours of work crap to deal with today. Which means I've spent a good part of this morning in tears in the toilets! (blinking hormones)

Still, my motto is not to let work get me down as its really not important compared to what else is happening at the moment. So, big deep breaths for me....

(It would be so much easier if I'd told anyone at work, but I really want to wait until the scan. I've told quite a few friends and family now, but I want to wait with work, if I can bear it...)

V jealous of all of you who have had scans... I have to wait until 3rd Sept when I'll be 12+6. I presume this will be my booking appt as well, but no-one has told me whether this is the case! However, on the plus side I'm getting the nuchal at the same time, and this is on the NHS, which I know is lucky. They're cutting it a bit fine, because I think you have to have the nuchal scan before 13 weeks don't you?

Hope everyone gets through the day without too many bleurgh moments.
Stick in there!

hello all, seems like quite a few of you are getting the nuchal scan on the nhs, can i ask is any of that age related or just standard practise with your health authority?

in norfolk you have to be 40 or over to get the nuchal scan on the nhs, otherwise you can pay for it privately or just have the triple test at 16wks it seems really unfair, another letter to write i think..

i am still feeling tired and sick, dp is convinced i was not this ill with the other 3, he is being great tho, cooking, cleaning and taking the boys out when he can so i can get some rest

fingers crossed i will feel better soon tho.

i am excited and nervous about my scan on the 17th aug, hopefully dp will get the time off work so i dont have to go on my own.

derah · 09/08/2007 16:07

Hey 3MB - hope you feel better. I doubt my getting the nuchal/combined test is age related cos I'm 'only' 33, and was 31 last time around and got it then too. Pretty poor if they don't even do a nuchal scan where you are. I mean, if they're scanning you anyway how much more effort can it be?

Only half an hour left to go and I'm off, and not at work tomorrow either - yipee!!

i am currently loving prunes. spent the past 3 days constipated - took me a day and a half to work out why i was so bloated and why i felt so horrid, as i've never suffered from it before. god it is so horrible!!! anyway, emergency trip to tesco at 10pm last night and 6 prunes later i was cured they are my new favourite friend and i shall be eating several every day for the rest of this pregnancy...

3mb - my area (I'm in west London) doesn't give nuchal scan as standard unless you are over 35. so i'd need to go private as i'm 30 but we've decided that we probs don't want it anyway. i know that i will just worry if my risk is increased even a little bit above normal for my age, plus i wouldn't do amnio to find out for definite as we wouldn't want to risk miscarriage and wouldn't terminate so we think we'd rather just deal with Downs if it happened. So I may even say no to the blood test (which we do get at 16 weeks). But it doesn't mean that it is okay for the NHS in this area not to offer it!!! Maybe I should write letters as well. Also planning a campaign to get cystic fibrosis testing done - apparently it only costs £3 but NHS in England won't pay for it whereas Scotland and Wales will. Anyone want to join me?

yardette - i'm really struggling at work with whether to tell or not. i don't think work colleagues should know before wider family and most of our friends, but at the same time i'm actually with work colleagues all day every day so i really want to be able to say when i'm feeling particularly sick etc. i did tell my manager but swore him to secrecy - he is lovely and i've worked for him for a long time so was okay with him knowing. also i've agreed with him that i may be coming in slightly later while feeling tired/sick and will just work through slightly later (9.30-6 rather than usual 9-5.30) and he was okay with that. so it was good to at least tell him, but sort of wish i could tell everyone else as well.

Nuchal scan not age related here either as I am 26 and it was just offered with the scan straight away. Lack of consistency is not good

3madboys funnily enough my DH said that I seem a lot sicker with this pregnancy than with any of my others. And more tired. So we joked it could be twins Am too tired to even think about how much hard work that would be!

LoveAndSqualor · 09/08/2007 17:35

yup - I was offered it straightaway too on the NHS, and I'm 30 - really frustrating that this isn't the case across the board.

is anyone else ridiculously hungry, btw, or is it just me? As soon as I've finished a meal I'm famished again. Very boring.

Right: off to the gym. Trying to keep up with exercise, but I'm finding it very tricky, when all I relly want ot do is lie on the sofa while DP keeps me supplied with an array of tempting food ..

Report
yardette · 09/08/2007 18:21

Yup, I was offered it straight away and I'm 32. I was told by my doctor that I was getting it becuase of my age, but I have since found out from my best friend who lives in same area that this is nonsense - everyone in south east london gets it at kings college hospital (apparently this is the place the test was first developed).
However, I have no idea what I'm getting other than the scan - my doctor was so hopeless at explaining anything. I have no idea if i'm getting a blood test, and also have no idea whether this is my booking in appt! I have no idea about what choices I have for hospitals either.

Blinking NHS.

i cant believe how many of you are getting the nuchal scan for free, i am 28 and have to pay for it, wont get it free unless you are over 40

my dp and i have also mentioned the possibility of twins, my great gran had three sets of twins, one identical, two non identical it is actually written on my medical notes as they said i DO have a higher chance of having twins..........runs screaming away, i am sooo not going there.....

Report
monthlymayhem · 09/08/2007 19:03

Definitely a lack of consistency - I'm in Renfrewshire (near Glasgow) and it just seems to be standard that you get the nuchal test - I'm 32 so don't think it can be age related.

Have just demolished a huge plate of pasta and now feeling quite sick - not preggy sick, but piggy sick

Report
MerlinsBeard · 09/08/2007 19:04

don'tthink they do nuchal scans routinely here.

They usual scans are 10-13 weeks for dating which, i imagine, would include nuchal if it were a high risk pregnancy. The next one is 20 weeks ish

Just got my appointments through..booking in 31 Aug and nuchal scan 11 sep. This is because I'm old, apparently. (35) Very unfair that they don't give them to everyone!
Was asked if I had any idea how long I'm going to want for maternity leave today...how on earth am I supposed to know at this stage! lol. Did the sensible thing and pretended to think about it over spaghetti bolognaise mountain.

Greetings all!

I've been wondering about the nuchal scan situation too. GP seemed to think that they offer it to women of 35 and over on the NHS. I'm 34 now, but will be 35 soon, and he didn't know whether that means I'll qualify or not.

Will have to wait until mid-wife appointment on Monday to find out.

Mind you, don't even know if I definitely want to have it, or what I'd do if I have it and the result is not good.

skidoodle · 09/08/2007 19:51

OK all this talk of appointments has made up my mind - I'm going to ring my doctor tomorrow and see what the story is. I've still heard nothing from the hospital at all. Perhaps I'll make an appointment to see her or a midwife next week too.

I'll be 10 weeks tomorrow so I guess I can't just keep waiting obediently.

HI girls. All this talk about tests n stuiff is a bit scary. I think I won't have the nuchal as its a bit dangerous but must admit am scared about having a disabled baby...I do know a woman with a downs DD and it seems o.k but certainky a different kind of experience. Am also paranoid about having twins as my mum and my maternal uncle have both had them! My DP says it will be good if we have them coz then we won't need to have any more kids!. ( doubt we would anyway as maybe I am going to be off sex permananently!! Crazy but I have agreed to give it one go at living together with my DP despite our differences if there was someone to take turns with night baby duty it could be worth a try!.
I also don't know if Lewisham is an opt for hosps, I have my scan there tho. Thinking water birth at the mo.

I too can't believe how many of you are getting nuchals on the NHS! I'm older but m/w
said nobody in Lincolnshire gets them even if I was 70!!!

Hi everyone, delurking now having read this and the last thread for weeks!
I'm having my first baby, due 2 March at the moment...dating scan is on Weds and I can't quite get excited about it yet as I'm so paranoid something will go wrong and all the posts on here were adding to it for a few days Have been worried mainly cos I've had spotting at 4-5 and 8-9 wks but noone else seems worried incl m/w so trying not to be myself.
MS symptoms still strong so that must be a good sign - no actual sickness, but plenty of nausea being held at bay by ginger capsules and sea-sick bands. Tried the prunes following a really horrible few days of constipation/piles and absolute agony - they worked but I felt so sick eating them that I'm now taking a regular spoonful of flaxseeds stirred into some yoghurt every morning. Much more tasty than prunes .

Anyway, to join in the great Nuchal debate, I'm 40 and the midwife told me it isn't available here on the NHS (South Wales) - I'm paying for a private scan at the local Bupa hospital - mainly because I've refused the triple test on the NHS since my age and weight will automatically put me at high risk and I don't want to be prodded into having an amnio - miscarriage rates are pretty high in Gwent following this, more than the national average. So the private scan is more for either early reassurance or preparation for a bit of harder work afterwards.

By the way, any of you get free photos from your scan? We have to pay £3 per photo, in £1 coins only - seems a real money- making scheme as I can't believe it costs that much to produce the paper.

Right, enough waffle for now, look forward to posting a bit more now that it's about to become a bit more real!!!

welcome fitnforty

i know what you mean about MN making you a bit anxious. it had that effect on me for a while but now I find it really comforting to come to this thread and check in.

thanks for the flaxseeds and yoghurt tip. If I get the dreaded constipation I'll try that. I can't stand dried fruit of any kind so an alternative idea is very welcome.
