NBG - old duvet and some plastic dust sheets from b&q - we got some for decorating, are about £1.50 each - or a shower curtain - £4 from matalan!

mixedmama · 10/08/2007 12:19

becklespeckle · 10/08/2007 13:03

Glad your scan went well Neuro (even if sonographer was a pain). Lucky you getting to see everything too! I had a really serious sonographer this time, she just sat there in silence doing the scan, everytime she sucked in her breath I thought she was about to say something was wrong. She showed me baby at the end and gave me a quick tour, head, spine, heart, feet but with the DSs I was allowed to watch the whole thing!

becklespeckle · 10/08/2007 13:06

glad your 24 week appt went well too Nbg! We don't get one here . Other than the 20 week scan where you don't see a MW you have no appts from 16 - 28 weeks! That makes my next appt mid October!

mixedmama · 10/08/2007 13:07

Wow... October that is quite some time. i am finding MW's a little useless this time anyway, just winding me up.I suppose if you have any problems or queries in the menatime you can call them.

OP posts:
JARM · 10/08/2007 13:09

my next appointment is 28 weeks too, only had a quick check last week because i have changed midwives!

thats not too bad for me though - works out as beginning of september

Housemum · 10/08/2007 14:19

Suey - tell you DH that mayo is fine if it's out of a jar - it's only the home-made stuff that's made with raw egg that's out-of-bounds. The stuff in jars hasn't seen a fresh egg in it's life, or if it was made with fresh it has been heat-treated and pasteurised!

JARM - I'm a big fan of cheap shower curtains - one of the fabric type ones from Ikea has been cut up to use as a no-need-to-iron tablecoth for the patio tables (saved buying a new set, ours was a bit old and knackeered-looking), another was cut in 4 to use as throw-in-the-wash mats under the highchair, or as DD got bigger, to cover the kitchen table (and the floor!) when play-doh or paints. They cost a bit more than the shiny ones or the PVC ones, but they fold up easily and can go in the machine (ours were £10 - £12)

Neuro - what a mardy cow the sonographer was??!! Back when I had DD1(1993), hardly anywhere would tell you the sex. I think that Reading still has that policy like your hospital - I can't honestly believe that anyone would get to that stage then try to get a termination because they didn't want that sex? I did wonder though the other day when I looked at the private scan companies, they won't do sexing scans until 24 weeks and you must take your maternity notes confirming how far gone you are - I guess that's so that you have passed the abortion limit. Awful to think that.

mixedmama · 10/08/2007 14:29

Housemum - that is a very good point, that had never occurred to me. i do actually know someone whose MIL pushed her down the stairs when pregnant with her first child as it was a girl to induce miscarriage. I would think of course that this is not the norm.

It does happen perhaps just not conventionally and I think alot of it has to do with the way a woman can be treated if it is the wrong sex rather than necessarily abortion as you say they cant have one at that late stage anyway. Altho everyone would do better to realise that it is actually the mans sperm that confirms the sex.

Isnt it??? Complete blind science comment, someone is going to tell me i am wrong.

OP posts:
suey2 · 10/08/2007 14:32

Where i live the first timers get a lot more visits. Maybe that is why there is such a disparity?

Neuro · 10/08/2007 14:33

Hmm well i thought it was in case I was of a religion or culture where finding out it was a girl, for instance, might lead the parents to an abortion. BUT i thought 20 weeks would be far too late. I mean, apols to anyone that's had to do it for extreme reasons but that would just feel murderous to me.

Yeah, the sonographer was 'mardy'! Perfect word. I was tempted to say to her: I know you do this everyday for a job, but you should remember that this is my first baby and a very important, memorable moment SO CHEER UP BITCH AND PUT A SMILE ON THAT FACE!

Of course i didn't though. Thinking back though, she was probably envious of my FABULOUS new hair and was secretly punishing me...he he.

Housemum i've made a mental note aboutthe shower curtain thing as i have rather nice carpet that i'd like to keep looking that way, so GREAT TIP!

I'M SO EXCITED ABOUT THE BABY. WANT IT TO HURRY UP AND GROW...

Mixedmama - I am out of the sunshine as I got called to my part time job for a few hours this afternoon. I have dragged myself here and thinking of the money...

Neuro · 10/08/2007 14:35

Yes, it IS the man's sperm that decides the sex.

HOnestly, pushing women down the stairs. Shocking.

mixedmama · 10/08/2007 14:37

neuro- that is justice since you shamelessly gloated about being in the sunshine

yeah it is culture or religion but i think those things dont happen so much in todays society. i think in my religion (or it may be my culture) you are not really supposed to find out, as it is Gods will and therefore none of your business till the baby makes an appearance.

OP posts:
Neuro · 10/08/2007 14:43

i'm quite glad i think, as I didn't want anyone else to know until the birth IF i found out the sex, and despite usually being quite good at keeping secrets, dont' think I could've done! So rather looking forward to the surprise when he or she pops out. ARRRGGHHHH CAN'T WAIT FOR THAT!

The father thought he saw something dangly, but I didn't. I sort of hope it's a girl now, but not sure why.

Speaking of the father, who is really just a sperm donor, he's getting all keen and saying some alarming things like 'well, you never know what's going to happen between us'. If we had loads in common and i really thought we could have a successful relationship then it would be heartwarming stuff, but it's totally not, so i've got to have a big talk with him on Sunday. OH no.

mixedmama · 10/08/2007 14:47

Doesnt he have a new partner anyway??? I thought you grassed them to the benefits people or something.... am i thinking of something completely different.

OP posts:
Neuro · 10/08/2007 14:55

Different person

mixedmama · 10/08/2007 14:55

Sorry...

OP posts:
MotherofZ · 10/08/2007 14:59

lol at Neuro thoughts at sonographer. Sounds like your ex partner/sperm doner (sorry don't know which one it is) is getting keen on making a cosy little family.

How awful is it to be pushed down the stairs for carrying girl. Defo a cultural thing as in China and India, in a lot of families they value a boy more - a staggering amount of girls are left at orphanages just beacause they were born a female. I'm Muslim and defo want to find out what I am carrying. Won't bother me if I have a girl again, DD will have a sister - which is something I wish I had when I was growing up (am the only girl), so it will be nice for her. If I have a boy - not bothered, then I'll have one of each

mixedmama · 10/08/2007 15:03

Yeah i am quite relaxed about sex of baby too - another boy would mean two boys who would grow up together and be able to play together, you know football and stuff. if on the other hand we have a little girl that will be us finished with baby making and our family will be complete.

OP posts:
Neuro · 10/08/2007 15:26

well i'd like one of every flavour and colour there is!

Angelina will have nothing on me. Um, except for amazing good looks, Brad, zillions of $, but you know, APART FROM THAT....

Neuro · 10/08/2007 15:28

Mixedmama - i dont' think whether they play together is gender related! My brother and I are great pals now, but as adults wanted to kill each other. And my two younger bros are v close, is same way. Except they make more fart jokes and talk about stuff I just don't get.

I"m looking forward to the next one and i haven't even popped this one out yet.
