Thought we had better start a new thread - wonder if we'll see some (more) babies arriving on this thread...

Congratulations @Kentishgal! When you get chance I’d love to hear how the elcs was and how you’re feeling after as mine is next week. Do you have a name for baby yet? X

Thank you @blueeyedviking that’s helpful to know.

Those of you with babies, have you got them in rompers in this weather or full sleepsuits?

StargazyDrifter · 10/07/2019 16:47

Ours is in a romper and occasionally just in a vest. When it was v hot last week she was just in her nappy a couple of times too. I've found the whole temperature thing so stressful, way too hot at our place but MW also said babies shouldn't be exposed to drafts so it's a bit of a tricky balancing act cooling rooms and moving her about to the coolest one. We're clearly a bit inexperienced at this! I've also struggled a bit to know what the temperature even is because of the night sweats (and then shivers) so have been waking up DH to ask what the room temp fees like to him, he obviously loves that. 😂

BeckyButterfly · 10/07/2019 17:06

@StargazyDrifter totally with you on the temperature thing! I was speaking to my friend about it as she has a newborn and knowing what to dress them in is a nightmare!
I bought a cheap thermometer from Amazon for our room which I have set up already even though no baby yet. Just out of interest really. It might be worth getting one. It's a digital one and was only £7. I know you can get those Gro Egg things specifically for measuring the room temperature for a baby but I didn't think it was worth the extra money just because it changes colour depending on the temp. When I looked they were about £20-30.

Giraffe888 · 10/07/2019 17:12

The temperature thing and what to wear really worries me. My MW basically said babies in hot countries cope so not to worry about it 🙄🤷🏼‍♀️

Our baby monitor has got a built in thermometer so at least we’ll know our bedroom temp x

Capybaras · 10/07/2019 17:23

No idea whether that's normal or not sorry @cravingmilkshake - do you feel ok otherwise? Maybe someone else will have some advice!

We've got a gro egg (£14 in mothercare sale!) and it's been red the last few weeks. It does have a little guide in there of what to dress baby in depending on the weather. Must be so tough to determine if baby is hot or cold!

Capybaras · 10/07/2019 17:24

We haven't bought a baby monitor yet - any advice @Giraffe888 on choosing one?

BeckyButterfly · 10/07/2019 17:25

@Capybaras £14 is fab! When I looked at them they were about £23 😩

StargazyDrifter · 10/07/2019 17:39

We have thermometers built into the wall at home (the place came with them) and they've been showing 24 or 26 C most days when the MW says it should be 22C max. She saw it too last visit and commented on it, ramping up the stress a bit more too.

Agree plenty of babies manage in hot countries which is what I keep thinking.

Our little one enjoys the tiny handheld fan I took to hospital, it's v cute. She also enjoys a wet lukewarm hand towel sometimes, though last time I made it a bit too wet and was certainly made aware of my error! 😂

Giraffe888 · 10/07/2019 17:40

@Capybaras we found choosing one to be a real minefield! We did a lot of research and ended up with the BT6000 video one. We got it from boots on offer at £99.99 x

blueeyedviking · 10/07/2019 20:56

We have a Gro Egg just by the Snuzpod and for me it's very reassuring. Kasper has been wearing a vest and a baby grow, and a blanket in bed.

My thinking is that we cant control the temp, so midwives shouldn't comment on that I think.

Today the breastfeeding lady who visited said I can do responsive feeding now. He is sleeping 3 hours straight at night and that's with me waking him up for food. Not sure about not waking him up anymore, a bit nervous about that for some reason.

We still dont have a baby monitor either. Such a minefield.

Giraffe888 · 10/07/2019 22:32

@blueeyedviking what’s responsive feeding? X

StargazyDrifter · 11/07/2019 00:53

blueeyedviking I ageee that MWs shouldn't comment and that would be my feeling too on responsive feeding - isn't it to do with their blood sugar, waking them? I'd want to know more before switching approaches I think.

Kentishgal · 11/07/2019 01:45

giraffe888 it was all absolutely fine - i was so scared I was shaking like a leaf and when they sat me on the edge of the bed for spinal I burst into tears - but after that completely calmed down. It was entirely different to my emcs and made me feel so different about this birth. I have huge medical phobias and had PTSD after my last experience but I held it together and actually managed to relax which just shows how calm it is. I'll update you on recovery in the coming days but so far so good - I was up and about 6 hrs later and I feel so much better than last time. All being well, I'll go home tomorrow. When is yours? Lucky it was an elcs because as it turned out my midwife had got it wrong and baby was actually breech! Weve named her Georgina!

stargazydrifter that certainly isn't "only" - to put it in context they replaced 2 out of 3 litres last time so I was actually only 1 litre down after the transfusions. This time I lost 300ml - I cant believe it is so different - I'm really lucky. But I feel so much better in myself- so I know how it affects you. Just take it easy and be kind to yourself.

@Giraffe888 it's basically a method where you feed when you spot their signals like hand in mouth. The opposite is where ou can also set your alarn

blueeyedviking · 11/07/2019 06:03

Oops just saw that my message got cut off ....
It's basically a method where you feed when you spot their signals like hand in mouth. The opposite is where you set your alarm at certain times e.g every 2-3 hours and do a feed then.

Kasper is 1 week old today!

Giraffe888 · 11/07/2019 06:53

@Kentishgal thank you that’s really helpful to know. Great you were up and about after 6 hours, this is my aim too! It’s on the 19th so 8 days to go! Beautiful name ❤️

The breastfeeding lady we saw said not to leave them longer than 3 hours even if their asleep because they may end up over hungry (without them realising) and then because they have to work to breastfeed they might struggle to feed due to frustration etc. I can’t remember exactly but what she said made complete sense x

thedust · 11/07/2019 07:30

Hope things are going well @Jxtina86! Congratulations on your new arrival @kentishgal

Thanks for all the birthday wishes and positive comments re: our dog. Met the potential adoptees yesterday, today we will find out if they want to go ahead. I don't want her going to anyone who's on the fence/not prepared for her.

At the midwife tomorrow for my 40 week appointment (I'll be 39+5). Tempted to accept the sweep they offer. I've been sleeping terribly, was awake from 12.30-5am the other night. Slept much better last night after following a proper bedtime routine and reading a book before bed and spraying my pillow mist and putting the aromatherapy diffuser on!

Jxtina86 · 11/07/2019 09:00

Morning all!

We welcomed Astrid Kristina at 1.11am this morning via emergency c section. It was all a bit dramatic and very quick but I can't fault the staff in anyway and it was overall a hugely positive experience. Will explain more later when I've recovered a bit more!

Both of us are fine- feeding is taking a while to establish but we're getting there. Just enjoying all the skin to skin and drinking in that newborn smell!

cravingmilkshake · 11/07/2019 09:10

Huge congratulations @Jxtina86 - I hope you are ok ❤️

Giraffe888 · 11/07/2019 09:18

Huge congratulations @Jxtina86 I’m glad all went well x

qj17 · 11/07/2019 09:29

@Jxtina86 congrats take it all in! I love her name too.

Capybaras · 11/07/2019 10:01

Congratulations @Jxtina86 glad to hear you're both doing well!

Yukka · 11/07/2019 10:20

@Jxtina86 congratulations glad it went well and you are getting settled :) x

Can't be many left to go now?!

Capybaras · 11/07/2019 10:27

I'm still hanging in here @Yukka

Bit breathless and irritable this morning on top of my ongoing mild period cramps (been having these since Saturday I think now 😭) so is hoping something is shifting.

We had sex this morning to try and get baby moving, god it's hard at 40+ weeks. Probably why I'm breathless 😂

Yukka · 11/07/2019 10:43

@Capybaras DH is a firm no go on the sex, to be fair with baby feeling like it's wedged in there I'm not sure it would be comfortable anyway.

Moving on to raspberry leaf tea today, lots of stories about it helping... I'm a sucker for the theories!
