Welcome Jammy. Terrible nausea here too! Congratulations (think we're probably due around the same time) x

BirthdayKake · 30/12/2018 18:20

I've also had loads of smoked salmon!

Michelle0507 · 30/12/2018 18:22

It's all my GP went on about "what I can't eat" my MW didn't mention anything about foods.

DianaBlythe · 30/12/2018 19:02

Loads of salmon here too. It’s definitely not banned but I think the recommendation is not more than 3x week because of the mercury (same as with Tuna and Shellfish). Declined salmon today as I think I’ve almost breached my quota this week!

Welcome Jammy! Glad work have accommodated you!

StargazyDrifter · 30/12/2018 19:04

Welcome, lovely newbies! 😊

I've been eating salmon, runny (red lion marked) eggs and have had the odd tiny sip of DH's wine with particularly nice meals. Will probably have a tiny glass of fizz tomorrow. What hasn't crossed my mind is pickled herring! Of course it's not cooked! Had quite a lot of that recently. 😐 Seems to have tuned out ok though...

I've been avoiding steak because I usually have it rare and that's probably a step too far, but have had a burger - ordered it well done and it did come hot through and largely brown but there were some occasional pinkish bits in the middle. I didn't want to spoil everyone else's meal so didn't send it back. Wasn't too happy about that and have learned my lesson not to even go for a well done one.

Not sure how awake I'll be by midnight tomorrow though!

StargazyDrifter · 30/12/2018 19:06

Lol @ smoked salmon quota! Another one for this thread's glossary. 😂

Jxtina86 · 30/12/2018 20:15

😉 @StargazyDrifter

Annoying about your burger - love mine medium and well done seems to mean they either cremate the thing or just ignore your request. Think I'll just save that (and the herring) for a post-birth treat...

ememem84 · 30/12/2018 20:18

The only thing I avoided last time was rare steak. And only because for me any other way of cooking is a waste. Rare or no steak.
Oh and pate.

I ate prawns the other day and smoked salmon. I adore smoked salmon. 😍

With ds last time I avoided runny eggs. Until I snapped at 6 months and had a fried egg sandwich. With a runny yolk. God it was delicious. Then I felt guilty and thought I’d hurt the baby. Then dh reminded me that I was wearing my jodhpurs, and about to go riding and to think about which was the bigger risk. Put it into perspective.

StargazyDrifter · 30/12/2018 20:32

Jxtina I'm going to quit the herring in the new year. Just one more tiny bite tomorrow... 😉

DianaBlythe · 30/12/2018 22:22

I’ve had a few swigs and sniffs of wine here and there at parties where I’ve been holding wine and pretending to drink it, and a few tastes of DHs if it looks nice with food.

Nothing at Christmas and nothing tomorrow but a finger and a half of the littlest glass at Mum and Dad’s. Partly because I fancied it but possibly partly to prove I’m not quite as precious as they think I am Blush! To be fair though they have been lovely and selected all pasteurised hard cheeses for their cheese board and deliberately didn’t do pickled herring or pate for starters.

I’ve also been vomiting whilst driving on the motorway which is probably much more dangerous but has been unavoidable!

Happy Last Herring Day, Stargazy!

StargazyDrifter · 31/12/2018 00:39

Lol thanks, Diana! I shall savour it. I very almost had a car vom accident today and thought of you driving to work. I hope it eases soon.

I've had a few jibes from the older generation about how people 'drank all the time etc', with the implication that modern mothers are overly cautious... my pleas about better science haven't really worked. I guess it's generational. They've been nice enough to let me get on with my pasturised cheese and alcohol free wine though.

StargazyDrifter · 31/12/2018 00:43

Hold on, I think pickled herring is back on the menu! 😍 The Swedes might have been right after all.

Other methods, such as salting or pickling, also make raw fish safe to eat.

thedust · 31/12/2018 07:48

I was very pleased to read about sushi and smoked salmon. I'm not drinking, I'm not a big drinker anyway and if I drink it's usually a binge drink! So I'm not bothered about being able to have 1 or 2 with a meal. Husband doesn't drink either so that makes it easier (although he is unable to take advantage of having a designated driver for 9 months!). I've had medium steak and brie. The risk is that these things can make anyone a bit ill, it's just worse in pregnancy. So the risk is very very small. I've not had cured meats though and I love chorizo, jamon, etc. My grandparents are Spanish and we were visiting family in Spain when my sister was pregnant and they thought it was crazy she'd been advised not to eat cured meats as everyone over there still does throughout pregnancy.

Twistering · 31/12/2018 08:04

I’ve been pretty relaxed about tbh. Had chicken livers and pate once as that’s just about high amounts of Vit A and I read that you’d have to eat it for most meals for it to make a difference - so ie a one off won’t hurt. Steered clear of the really smelly cheese (gutted!) but v happy about Stilton! And smoked salmon is fine. Also had a rare steak as pretty much would have only had spuds to eat otherwise given the place, and I did feel a bit bad but the meat was v reputable, really cooked on outside and I read that tox risk in beef is pretty much unheard of. Prob won’t do again until much later though. Few sips of wine (cheese needs red wine!). Very sweet, but DH read in his book (!) that cured meats are fine if been frozen so did some for me! Runny eggs totally fine if lion stamped.
I’ve got a v strong constitution generally, so kinda think risk must be teeny. Hope so anyway! Maybe I’m just evil and selfish!

Jxtina86 · 31/12/2018 09:12

@StargazyDrifter never doubt a Swede 😉 Ikea is only 10mins from me, anyone need their herring stash topped up?! 😂😂

MakeAWhish · 31/12/2018 09:22

@Twistering I think it's sensible to be fairly relaxed. I am too. But I am nearly 40 and on baby number 3. 10 years ago in my first pregnancy I was worried about everything - it's that parental guilt that starts as soon as you see the second line on the test! I have had a small glass of red a few weeks ago, plus a glass of champagne the weekend before Xmas and a Buck's Fizz on Xmas day. I'll have a glass of fizz tomorrow too, as at friends for New Year's Day. I would never judge another expectant mother for making her own informed choices. I wouldn't drink regularly or light up a fag, but everything in moderation!
I don't think I've ever had pickled herrings?! Oh hang on, are they called roll mops? I love them.

HchyScott · 31/12/2018 09:25

@twistering I was over the moon to read about Stilton too and baked Camembert which has ended up being abit of a craving for me, I’ve eaten 3 over the festive period and got it for dinner again tonight 🤣!! I was so gutted about cured meats though, MIL said she bets I never eat it so I wouldn’t miss it until DH told her I practically live off the stuff, especially in summer! Think I may freeze some when I really fancy it. Had some Buck’s Fizz at Christmas only to be asked by DH Nan who is the biggest drinker I know if I should be drinking it. Luckily BIL stuck up for me straight away.
I’ve decided I’m going to have what a want in moderation as long as I won’t worry about it afterwards, anyone who wants to judge can go swivel lol. Apart from vaping. I managed to go cold turkey on that.

Jxtina86 · 31/12/2018 09:59

Away from food, I'm taking the plunge and going shopping for maternity bras today. Our local Mothercare is closing so hoping I might find a few bargains but otherwise been recommended m&s... any other recommendations or tips? I'm down to my last two bras that comfortably fit!

Twistering · 31/12/2018 10:12

@MakeAWhish I’m 38 in Feb, so maybe years bring a more laissez faire attitude! :)

Twistering · 31/12/2018 10:18

Posted too soon! Was also going to say, having had three miscarriages where I was a total angel with food etc for the first two, think made me feel like what would be would be anyway. And well done your BIL!

@HchyScott good work on the vape, did you find it hard? DH has been vaping about 4 bloody years with the odd fag thrown in, but assures me he will be stopping properly post Jan!

No advice whatsoever on mat bras although watching with interest.... I’m still in normal bras but my norks are immense!

On another subject...when are you supposed to book NCT and any advice from anyone who’s done it? Essentials v Signature etc?

Jxtina86 · 31/12/2018 10:33

@Twistering I'll let you know how I get on with the bras!

With NCT, I think we're going to do it. DH was sceptical at first but I think one his work colleagues convinced him otherwise as he was looking at the cost the other day and even membership! I only know a few people who've done it but they all said it was worth it just to meet people in the same boat, especially as a first timer.

Jxtina86 · 31/12/2018 10:36

@Twistering whoops meant to say I think we'll do the signature - 16.5 hours I think? There's one in our area (Sutton/Epsom) in May. We're going to book on and pay in installments after the scan on Weds I think.

HchyScott · 31/12/2018 10:36

@twistering I must admit, the first 2 weeks after bfp I didn’t stop but I cut down using it, mainly because I was in denial. Then I started to get proper symptoms of pregnancy and one morning I decided I was going to completely stop so I put it in a drawer and Its not moved since. Occasionally I still really fancy it but weirdly I’ve craved a fag more despite quitting those 3 years ago and hating the smell! Must be a pregnancy thing?! So glad I stopped using the vape though, it’s funny how things rule your life without even realising. Good luck to your hubby, he can do it! X

Laburna · 31/12/2018 10:41

I've not done specific maternity bras, just got bigger sizes in regular ones. I tried the soft/wireless ones when I was pregnant with DS and just didn't like them at all. Personal preference on it all though, as long as they fit well and make you feel comfortable it doesn't matter what you get.

Have just seen a September 2019 group start 😦

TheScaredyKat · 31/12/2018 10:45

I've heard NCT is great to so definitely want to do it. There Isn't one in my town though so will have to go 20-30 mins down the road which is annoying. I've looked into more local ones by other people but there just doesn't seem to be anything. Thats deepest darkest Cornwall for you!
Not sure of the cost haven't got that far yet, is it a lot?

Just got my 20 week scan appointment through, 8th Feb!! When I will be pretty much bang on 20 weeks. Cornwall might be slow with the antenatal groups but really on it with my appointments so far. It's all going so quickly, 8th Feb feels really soon!

I can't really join in with the meats and fish conversation as vegetarian. I genuinely don't fancy a drink really, I normally like a nice big glass of wine and I guess if I can't have that I'm just not bothered. I think I'll be more bothered come May/ June when (if) the weathers nice, then I'll miss it!
