Ooh Anna, I'm a complete novice and have been wondering whether a sling or carrier would be suitable for someone with a chronic bad back? I suppose as long a scan the baby is light it's probably ok. But are there any styles that are better for that?

Jxtina86 · 29/12/2018 20:47

@AnnaBegins excellent advice about going to the sling library before baby - sounds like it would be a far less stressful experience! Thank you for the specific recommendations too - will add to the research list!

AnnaBegins · 29/12/2018 21:10

@StargazyDrifter it's definitely possible! There's a lillebaby carrier with excellent lumbar support. And to be honest a well tied (nice and tight) stretchy wrap should be fine whilst baby is so light. Top tips for stretchy wraps are: spread the wrap over your back for comfort, ensure where the two ends "cross" at your back that it's nice and low (bra strap level not at your neck!), no twists in the fabric, and tighter than you think to start with. YouTube a stretchy wrap vid if none of that makes any sense Grin A sling library may be able to suggest other supportive carriers. Steer clear of narrow based carriers which tend to be less comfy for baby and parent, as they tend to be harder to get tight enough and so pull on your shoulders.

DianaBlythe · 29/12/2018 22:06

Should we go to the sling library before we’re too big or nearer to the due date?

I did pop into Jojo yesterday to pick up some tights and tried a couple of bits on. I can no longer do my jeans up. I enjoyed the tie on bumps they have in the fitting room! Obviously it makes sense but it just really tickled me!

I’m going to Tenerife in February when I’ll be 20 weeks and not quite sure what I’ll want in terms of swimwear. Maybe just a bikini in a bigger size? I just have no idea!

StargazyDrifter · 29/12/2018 23:44

Thank you AnnaBegins! That's really helpful. 😊

TwinkleDay · 30/12/2018 07:46

Good luck with the house renovations.. this time last year we were literally putting the last lick on paint on the hallway after 2 years of ripping everything out and putting in a new one for our little nest... getting excited to do the nursery or how it has been called the plain white painted -hobby storage room- for OH... and had a nice year of lots of holidays and saving before little one gets here.

Has anyone given any thoughts as to travel systems that will be light and airy for baby in yet heat of summer... when we was shown round yesterday they did have built in net vest but everything else quite well padded and well dark a warm 🤔

BlazingTiger · 30/12/2018 11:35

Checking in and 12 weeks today. I have my 12 week scan on Friday. Most of the nausea has subsided although I get occasional bought. Otherwise feeling much more normal compared to a few weeks ago.

thedust · 30/12/2018 11:56

I'm 12 weeks today too BlazingTiger I had my scan on Thursday though as I was originally 12 weeks on 21st December based on LMP. Now due 14th July though. I'm feeling a bit more normal too but I'm worried in case it's just because I've been off work and getting more rest, the real test will be going back to work on Wednesday!

We told all family and friends over Christmas but I was waiting until I go back to work in the new year to tell work. Bloody father in law bumped into a colleague of mine he knows and blabbed. Typical. Angry Also found out one of our friends is expecting and due a week before me! So that will be nice to have someone I know on mat leave too.

Trying2bemum · 30/12/2018 14:09

@Michelle0507 they get so stroppy when they're locked out 😾

@DianaBlythe I had no idea they had a tie on bump ?!

Hi @BlazingTiger best of luck with your scan And glad to hear yours went well @thedust!

I had a private scan this morning for reassurance - all measuring on track at 10+4. Baby wriggling around. Very relieved!

Will anyone be having small glass of fizz on nye or are you avoiding altogether?

BirthdayKake · 30/12/2018 14:34

I'll be having some fizz I reckon. I did at Christmas. Never, ever had alcohol in the first trimester before

Michelle0507 · 30/12/2018 14:39

I don't like fizz, I'm a flavoured gin girl but it'll be no alcohol for me. My best friend and his Wife think it's ridiculos I won't touch it when pregnant I just don't feel the need. I miss the taste of rhubarb and ginger gin but hey ho.
My GP did say cut down don't stop, I only started drinking last Christmas always been tee total. Lol!

Shall be at my 12w scan this time tomorrow!

Michelle0507 · 30/12/2018 15:32

We're having a lamb dinner today I'm right in thinking I can't have any pink meat can I? We normally have it rather pink.

BirthdayKake · 30/12/2018 16:00

Probably best not to have it dripping with blood! I've had fairly pink lamb recently. It had to be better than the mountains of biscuits and Lindor chocolates I keep eating, surely?! Blush

wombatron · 30/12/2018 16:01

Michelle I eat mine pink still. I wouldn't have a burger pink or pork blushing, but I'll continue to eat beef and lamb medium. Very personal decision - I also will eat smoked salmon and pate if it's been opened in front of me - but I think that's more about where it's from etc.

Michelle0507 · 30/12/2018 16:34

Thanks ladies. We'll opt for a little pink. My Uncle is a farmer so we get a leg of lamb for Christmas it feeds 6 & there are 2 of us! Also I'm eating a child's portion again so lots left anyone near to Derbyshire and want a lamb dinner? Lol

MakeAWhish · 30/12/2018 16:40

@wombatron the risk of getting listeria from pate is fairly low, but it's the vitamin A content in it that's more of a problem in pregnancy. I'd personally avoid pate, but I'm fairly laid back about other stuff. I had pink beef today and it was deeeee-licious. As @wombatron says tho, it's a very personal thing. No judgment. X

Jxtina86 · 30/12/2018 16:47

I'm avoiding pate but I thought smoked salmon was fine in the UK? I'd have a little pink in beef or lamb though. Also I've had the odd runny egg but made sure it's Red Lion stamped. It's funny though when you look at advice from other countries - I'm half Swedish and normally for Christmas we have pickled herring. As it's not technically cooked, I decided to avoid but my mum says in Sweden they would say it's fine, yet advise against smoked salmon!

TwinkleDay · 30/12/2018 16:56

I have been having smoked salmon.:: fine on the nhs website

ReginaPhalange89 · 30/12/2018 16:58

I won't be having any alcohol, although I'm not a big drinker anyway. I'm not the type to have a glass of wine with a meal or that , if I'm drinking it's to get drunk haha ! So the idea of having one drink doesn't bother me.

Also don't really eat much meat , chicken or pork is about as far as I go. I'm actually thinking about going veggie tbh, I struggle with meat if I'm cooking it myself , think if someone else makes it I'm ok, it's an ignorance thing I reckon ! I make things like Bolognese etc for the kids but won't eat it myself , then end up just having something like toast ! Really would be better just to make vegetarian meals

wombatron · 30/12/2018 17:12

it's not a regular thing so I didn't really put too much thought into it if I'm truthful. Def wouldn't be eating on a regular basis! And I would need to see the packet and see it be opened. My midwife spouts out of date info (even differs on the NHS website) I apply a bit of self logic to most. Apparently I'm only allowed hard boiled eggs Confused

wombatron · 30/12/2018 17:13

And yes smoked salmon is fine, though I wouldn't leave it open longer than a day or so. But my midwife also tells me I can't have that so go figure.....

Jxtina86 · 30/12/2018 17:22

@wombatron smoked salmon wouldn't last more than a day in my house anyway lol. That's not great re your midwife and out of date info. Mine didn't go into detail, just said make sure everything is cooked through and to check the NHS website for anything specific.

Michelle0507 · 30/12/2018 17:46

We're going to Miller & Carter next week for my partners birthday and I've been sulking as I can't have steak, I have it medium but now I'm like hmmm. I think it's because of the previous MC else I wouldn't be so cautious.
Tbh I've just kept away from cheeses you can't have brie is the only one I miss. I do love paté and because I can't have it I've wanted it. We have loads of cold meats like chorizo etc so I'm missing that.

wombatron · 30/12/2018 17:52

Michelle I think you can have Brie if it's made from pasteurised milk and cooked - if that's helpful. If I'm honest I will still take it all with a pinch of common sense once I start reaching the 3rd trimester

jxtina im the only one that eats it here so I'm about to slice up a whole side of the stuff to freeze for a later date!

Jammyx · 30/12/2018 17:56

Hi all, first time poster here.

Congratulations on your pregnancies!! Flowers I'm currently pregnant with my first - due 20th July. Just had my first scan this week so it's only now begun to feel very real!

Also another terrible nausea sufferer here. I work as a midwife on a birth centre but have now moved to clinic as the warm birth rooms have been extra nauseating for me.

Looking forward to sharing this journey with you all Smile
