@VillageFete I'm so sorry to hear that your friend is going through this. Have they given her a prognosis? Hopefully she'll be able to continue to fight and be in remission soon. I don't mean to pry but my Mum is having an operation to remove a tumour that stretches between her bowel and kidney next week so I understand how this has been a downer for you when you should be feeling happy. She's only in early stages though, just a big tumour.

@cardboard33 I'm keeping everything crossed that you have a positive outcome and live a long, long time.

Shampooeeee · 21/09/2018 22:39

Does anyone else have any weird symptoms? Brushing my teeth has been almost making me sick throughout this pregnancy. Now, in a strange addition, helping my DS brush his teeth also makes me gag! It makes no sense.
DDog has taken to going to bed early to bagsy my pregnancy pillow!

VillageFete · 21/09/2018 23:28

I’ve read all of the comments and you’re so kind Flowers It’s just been such a tough couple of days. It’s seeing the deterioration in such a short space of time. I’m so sorry to all those affected by this bastard disease in some way. It’s truly the worst. In terms of prognosis, she doesn’t want to know. But it’s spread to liver and a tiny bit in lungs. Her liver is inoperable, they are just trying to control it.

1986mumof5 · 22/09/2018 01:19

@villagefete so sorry to hear about your friend. It is awful having to experience pain my cousin's husband died last month of cancer he has left behind a 12 year old and a 6 year old and I completely understand your situation where you feel guilty having happy news but sometimes your news actually brings a nice distraction from the pain and you may find that your friend may appreciate having something else to talk about - I know my cousin and her husband did. She is my eldest cousin and we were pregnant at the same time without eldest who are both 12. Her son was actually a twin but she lost one of the babies early on in the pregnancy I went through so much guilt having my healthy baby while her pregnancy was touch and go but she always said she was happy to have someone to talk to who had good news as it helped her get through her issues. I think sending the scan pic is a good idea but that's just my opinion based on my experiences.
@assume my OH is self employed and my children are home educated so I can be pretty flexible with work and tend to get a job when the finances demand it. I always work in during pregnancy to ensure MA for the first 39 weeks. With my youngest who is 7 months I have had to go back to work early as new baby is due March ( well of course otherwise I wouldn't be in this thread lol) but with my others I always took the full 39 weeks off and survived on the MA and my OHs varying income. Doesn't come without it's problems and stresses finance wise but I always think it's worth it knowing I'm around my kids and that me and my OH are the main (and only) caregivers. My parents and his mum rarely help us out with the kids but we manage. It all depends on your financial situation and support system. I don't think there's a right answer so go with your gut and don't feel you have to make excuses or explain yourself to anyone. I know I don't lol I learnt that lesson a long time ago. If your financial situation demands you to be away from your children more than you would like just remember why you are doing it and make the most of the time you do have with them. When they're old enough you can explain why you weren't always able to take and collect them to and from school or why you didn't get to attend assemblies etc. I feel pretty bad ATM having to work night shifts while baby is so little but with number 5 on the way and finances already pretty thin I had to make the sensible choice to keep providing for my family. Sorry if I'm being long winded but HTH xxxxx

frenchgal · 22/09/2018 08:11

Hello - I am almost 18 weeks but only having my 16 weeks apt Monday as I have been travelling heavily (Togo, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Sudan etc) for work.
What to expect ? Will I hear my baby's heartbeat ?

Wineandchoccy · 22/09/2018 08:38

@frenchgal The midwife will check your urine and BP. May take blood if she needs to check your babies blood for blood group re anti d.
She will ask questions re are you ok and not feeling down.
They will discuss movements if you have felt any and if not what you are looking out for.
Heartbeat seems to vary at different trusts some check and some don’t look in case they can’t find it at this stage. Mine did but took ages to find it.
They will check you have booked flu and whooping cough vaccines and book your next appt.
Appointment lasted about 15-20 mins

Murphyrocks · 22/09/2018 08:38

@frenchgal wow that's some serious jet setting! Don't know how you're coping with that - even a trip to London wipes me out atm! I had my 16 week appointment this week - as always there's quite a lot of variation but my mw doesn't do heartbeat checks as standard at 16 weeks because they can still be hard to find and understandably people can worry if they fail to find the heartbeat! They can't refer you for a scan or anything if they can't find it so prefer not to offer and open up the cans of worms. I asked her to do it anyway though - she obliged and found it pretty quickly - so up to you!

Otherwise I had the normal urine/BP checks, results from the bloods they took last time and a blood test to check if the baby is rhesus positive as I'm negative so will need anti-d jabs if baby is positive. That's quite a new test though, didn't exist when I had DS 2 years ago and they just gave anti-d to any rh- Mums as standard and I don't think it's been rolled out nationally yet. And being me I went through the list of questions I'd accumulated since my last check!

frenchgal · 22/09/2018 08:41

Thanks @Murphyrocks @Wineandchoccy !!

TheWanderlust · 22/09/2018 08:48

@frenchgal I had my 16w appointment yesterday and the MW listened to the heartbeat, asked if I was feeling okay and printed off a growth chart for use later on? She also found my 'lost' bloods that had been sent to my previous NHS trust/ GP as we only moved area in March.

I found it quite a pointless appointment if I'm honest. My MW was supporting a home birth so they sent out a covering MW who was nearly 30 mins late and rushed through so quickly we didn't have chance to chat or for me to ask any questions.

In better news, we had a private scan in the afternoon and are having a little girl πŸ˜ƒ it took nearly an hour to get her to turn as she was again laying on her tummy, back turned to the ultrasound so had to walk around, drink lots of icy orange/apple juice and have a KitKat to wake her up πŸ™ˆ

Kee80 · 22/09/2018 08:55

Morning ladies hope everyone is well. So many posts to catch up on haha.

Has anyone had there flu jab yet and did your midwife give it you or do you have to make an appointment at docs or a pharmacy to get it done?

NotDoingThat · 22/09/2018 09:00

@Kee80 I'm having my flu jab today- MW didn't do it they just told me to make an appointment with the normal flu jab clinic

Murphyrocks · 22/09/2018 09:05

Congrats @thewanderlust, lovely news!

@Kee80 ds and I are having our flu jabs done together at the GP in a couple of weeks, hoping to get them to do my whooping cough one too although my area doesn't usually do them until 20 weeks and I'll be 19+4 so I might have to push!

Kee80 · 22/09/2018 09:09

Thanks @Murphyrocks @NotDoingThat I will get an appointment at the flu jab clinic

frenchgal · 22/09/2018 09:15

@TheWanderlust oh that's wonderful news ! A little girl πŸ€—

Are you having a home birth ?

TheWanderlust · 22/09/2018 09:39

I'm not sure about a home birth at the moment. I really like the idea of it and we're only 5 mins from the hospital if there were to be any complications but we have a really good birthing centre which is built within the hospital grounds which also sounds like a good option at the moment.

I think having the dogs around me at home would stress me out more in labour πŸ˜‚

Our community midwife team seems to be great that they will support you no matter where you decide to give birth. They offer a huge amount of continuity of care which I really value - it's something that's so important for my mental health.

cardboard33 · 22/09/2018 11:44

@villagefete I think sending her a pic is a good thing as then you'll be able to gauge from her reaction if she wants you to continue sharing (which I think she will) or if she wants you to hold off. But if she wants you to hold off it won't be because she's not excited for you, it will be more because sometimes things like that just make it seem more real. With regards to prognosis, it's anyone's guess and all the medical teams can do is tell you their best guess. Sometimes they will be wildly out (either she will live for ages, or she will die really quickly) but sometimes they will get it roughly right. Does she have McMillan support? Can you talk to them too... They have a phone line for carers/friends/family in addition to the person themselves. They will probably just be trying to keep her comfortable at this stage.

I need to get my flu jab. Here you just go in to the chemist etc and they normally can do you at the same time.

Had an appointment letter come through for my 16 week scan (cos I'm that special...) And it's on the same day as the 20 week one, two hours apart at a different hospital. Gotta love the NHS...!

Wineandchoccy · 22/09/2018 15:14

I have just seen this on another thread. Zara have started doing maternity clothing I can’t say it’s appealing to me but some things may look better on m.zara.com/uk/en/woman-maternity-l1179.html?page=5#offset=11072.34375&productId=7613570

SquirtlesMumAgain · 22/09/2018 16:49

Our flu jabs are done in clinic at the doctors and whooping cough is done at the next scan.

VillageFete · 22/09/2018 17:31

@Cardboard33 I may give McMillan a call actually. Just such a dark time when I should be so happy.

@TheWanderlust Congratulations!! A beautiful baby girl. I am pretty certain i’m gaining a son (nub theory etc) But booked a gender scan on 11th October to confirm! How many weeks are you? I’ll be exactly 16.

TheWanderlust · 22/09/2018 18:25

@VillageFete I had my gender scan yesterday when I was 16+2. We were convinced she was a boy .... but then again she made it so difficult to get a look at the scan she had to be a girl πŸ™ˆ

We're so glad we had an extra scan, this pregnancy has become so much more real for me now, and I almost feel like it has given me permission to feel some of my symptoms I have been experiencing without beating myself up.... after all my body is doing amazing things and growing the most magical gift we could hope for.

VillageFete · 22/09/2018 18:41

@TheWanderlust I have the majority of β€œnub experts” on FB telling me it’s defo a boy, wish I hadn’t asked now. Feel like it will take of the magic of the scan away. My own fault!

Any tips to make it easier to find the image we need? Do I need to drink lots beforehand etc?

TheWanderlust · 22/09/2018 19:30

@VillageFete they sent me out to drink a class of water and some fruit juice to wake baby up. Also had a kitkat for the sugar!

orangekitkat13 · 22/09/2018 20:06

I asked my midwife about jabs she said I can either just book it in with the nurse when ever but she also said we could do it at my next appointment in mid Nov so I'm not sure what to do!

6 boys and 3 girls so far if I can count right πŸ˜‚

@TheWanderlust congratulations on your baby girl news πŸ’œ

@Lovelyfishy glad you are joining me at the bottom of the list πŸ˜„ I feel so far behind everyone!

@orangekitkat13 I'd be tempted to book with the nurse and get it sooner rather than later as the flu could be going about very soon. I didn't get it with DS but Im 6 years older now and feel like I'm catching everything this pregnancy!

I have been getting an awful tightness in my throat like a lump has formed and I feel like I could choke or be sick. Reading up I think it's reflux even though I feel no burning in my throat. It's very unsettling when I'm out and about and just adds to the nausea 😩
