Ahhh wow !! Congratulations on not one but two babies 😍😍😍

7415N1d0r1391117 · 17/09/2018 13:43

We booked a scan today for at the end of the week to find out if we are having πŸ’™or πŸ’“

Just out of curiosity and for the fun of it would anyone like to guess what it might be before I reveal this week? πŸ˜„

Wineandchoccy · 17/09/2018 13:54

@Hurradieweltgehtunter Congratulations on your double exciting news Smile

Gronk27 · 17/09/2018 14:10

@harradieweltgehtunter wow! Congratulations. I was convinced I was going to have twins but only one in there apparently. All the very best. Take some time for it to sink in.

Nightmanagerfan · 17/09/2018 14:10

@cardboard33 we are in the same position as you - London and don’t own a car. We asked the midwife and she said it was fine to take the baby home in a pram. We can actually walk as we are 5 mins from our hospital, but the option of one stop on the bus is there too!

melissa112 · 17/09/2018 14:12

@Hurradieweltgehtunter congratulations on your exciting news!

@7415N1d0r1391117 my guess would be boy but I'm never really sure whether I'm looking at the right thing! I'm leaning towards boy though!

I'm going to ask a hopefully stupid question now but I really am panicking quite a lot. About 3 weeks ago I discovered that eating crisps (wotsits or Quavers for some reason) kept the nausea away and so for 2 weeks I ate loads of crisps! For the past few days I've had one a day when I felt queasy. But then I googled... and saw some worrying articles about crisps and cancer and now my mind is working overdrive and because baby is so tiny I'm worried I've done some damage to him. OH says I've been eating crisps all my life and am fine but I can't help feeling so anxious now and worried. I guess I just want someone to tell me I'm being silly, but Am I? Sad

Bluebelltulip · 17/09/2018 14:27

@Hurradieweltgehtunter congratulations

BadBadBeans · 17/09/2018 14:34

@melissa112 that isn't something I had heard of, so I googled it. There is a fantastic and informative webpage on acrylamide intake during pregnancy on the NHS website: www.nhs.uk/news/pregnancy-and-child/chips-and-burnt-toast-linked-to-low-birth-weight/

Basically it does not suggest it is linked to causing cancer in the baby, but it does say it might contribute to slightly lower birth weight and MAYBE very slightly lower head circumference, although when they adjusted the results for other factors the head circumference result did not seem significant. But it's not just crisps, it's also bread, toast, cereal, chips... And I defy you to find many pregnant women who haven't eaten at least one thing from that group daily! The NHS advice is to cook your toast and your chips as lightly as possible - try not to brown or burn them. Also, I should think it is a lot less of an issue in much of the first trimester when the baby is still getting nutrients from the yolk sac, which is probably when you were eating most of your crisps! Please don't worry.

You know, when my son was weaning I was paranoid about him eating gluten because his granddad is coeliac and I had read research that said keeping the baby gluten free for the first year can help lessen their chances of be coming coeliac later. So I fed him lots of rice-based stuff instead - rice pasta, rice cakes, etc. Then an article came out about the levels of arsenic in baby rice products! I cried over that for a while, but it woke me up to the fact that no matter how hard I try to be 'perfect' and as risk-free as possible, I cannot prevent myself from unwittingly doing things that carry some level of risk. All I can do is the best I can with the knowledge I have right now. Xx

toastfiend · 17/09/2018 14:38

Second midwife appointment for me today. She found the heartbeat straight away and said it was very clear and all sounded good, so that was great! Absolutely amazing to hear it and could hear the baby moving too!

@PartridgeJoan I am still feeling them, yes. Midwife asked me today if I was feeling baby moving and I described what I could feel (like an elastic band twanging feeling almost, which happens most at night) and she said it sounded like baby moving so that's pretty cool. Smile

Hurradieweltgehtunter · 17/09/2018 15:00

Thank you everyone. Absolutely shell shocked. Conceived naturally after 2.5 years of trying, so not expected at all. Concerned about the increased interventions twins means during childbirth and then of course dealing with two after they are born! Going to take some mental readjustment.
(not German, just like the song of the same name btw!)

melissa112 · 17/09/2018 15:02

@Badbadbeans thank you for your reply and the link. I hadn't seen that so I'll have a good read. Unfortunately it was the previous 3 weeks and I'm 14+4 today so not sure if yolk sac would still be feeding baby. I've also had loads of toast as it was one of the other things I could keep down.

I like your comment about just doing your best with what you know now. I'm going to cut out the crisps I think. I agree that there are always things that pop up with some risk despite our best efforts. I just thought I was better off eating some crisps than nothing at all. Thankyou again for your reply

wordsmithereens · 17/09/2018 15:14

@melissa112 If it's any consolation, met a lady living locally who had HG and mainly ate quavers to stave off the nausea - her kids seemed active and fine.

Angelmiracle · 17/09/2018 15:28

@Hurradieweltgehtunter congratulations! It's probably easier having twins for your first it will be all you know when you get in the swing of things! There are great sources such as tamba.org.uk for tips and advice and groups on fb you can join too.

@melissa112 oh no really! Quavers became a craving of mine thankfully I didn't eat them everyday. Must also cut back on DS eating them too πŸ™ˆ A Kinesiologist told me that it takes crisps 52 days to fully process through your body maybe this is what she was referring to?!

Definitely check your specific hospital policy on car seats. Our last hospital they checked baby was strapped in correctly (they didn't really have a clue!) and sent us on our way, here they don't let you leave the building unless you are escorted.

Our baby car seat has a base (which came free) but just belts in to the car, no isofix. There are options if you do need a seat under their policy

BadBadBeans · 17/09/2018 16:09

@melissa112 of course you were better off eating crisps than nothing at all! And I doubt all the toast you've eaten has been well-done or burnt, either! I hope that when you have time to sit and read through the link you will feel a little more reassured about how hugely common all these foods are and how MOST WOMEN will be eating lots of them, especially in the first trimeseter when carbs are so helpful for keeping nausea at bay! In fact, the report said that ALL of the women whose cord blood they tested contained some level of acrylamide. It's just part of our diet. I'm certainly not going to stop eating my bowl of breakfast cereal every morning. Or my mid-morning toast! It's what's keeping me going!

I have a huge thing about carcinogenic food as my mum died of cancer in her early forties. HOWEVER, as I have listened over the years to some of the contradictory reports about what you should consume as part of a healthy diet, I have come to the conclusion that the best thing for me to do is to eat in a balanced way. If I have a lot of soy products one day, I don't eat any for a few days. If I have a weekend where I eat a lot of sugary food, I cut down a bit during the week to compensate. Yeah, it's maybe not the best idea to eat loads and loads of crisps for the rest of your life - the fat and salt content would probably do more harm than anything else! But for a couple of weeks it won't have hurt you, or your baby. And don't forget, some people eat crap diets literally their whole lives! I hope you can get it in perspective - it was just a couple of weeks out of an entire pregnancy.

Why don't you have a look online and see if you can see which crisp brands are lowest in acrylamide? That might be a good compromise. (I have been necking Hula Hoops like they're going out of fashion and I never normally eat crisps at all. I wonder what their levels are like!)

@Hurradieweltgehtunter Double congrats to you! That makes two sets of twins on this thread now, which I think is about right statistically! How exciting!

I'm having an early nesting phase. DH is away for a week with work and I am determined that the house is going to be spotless by the time he's back. It's been awful for weeks because I've been too sick to do any cleaning, and DH just doesn't notice or care about mess. However I have just gone mad online ordering beeswax candles and terrariums (terraria?!), and I'm planning to get some lovely throws to cosy our lounge up for the winter. We have a really odd assortment of inherited furniture in our lounge and it's currently a bit cold-feeling and unpleasant to hang out there, so I want to make it a lovely positive space for DS to play in and for DH and I to enjoy evenings relaxing in. Think I'm going to get a load of seagrass baskets to store DS's toys in, too. Go me!

Gronk27 · 17/09/2018 16:32

@badbadbeans I'm coeliac as is my Dad and my Gran was. I hope I don't pass it on!!

I think with anything you have to eat a huge amount of it to make a difference?

Headache and feeling sicky today. Think it's back tension again. Need to book a pregnancy massage! Is anyone else starving all the time now they're in trimester 2??

Murphyrocks · 17/09/2018 17:00

@Gronk27 YES! Grateful the nausea has faded but I'm now really struggling not to eat too much! Since my last pregnancy they've amended the calorie recommendation so that you get nothing extra in the second trimester which I'm finding really difficult being so hungry! Snacking on homemade popcorn is quite good as it's really bulky for the calorie consumption and you can add healthy supplements to it like yeshi and baobab...but the packets of sweets and crisps are still calling me! Weight seems to be stable for now...

Murphyrocks · 17/09/2018 17:02

Also I have coeliac on both sides of my family, never even occurred to me to worry about it with DS! πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ Thankfully he seems fine.

HidCat · 17/09/2018 17:18

@cardboard33 I'd do what @wordsmithereens suggested and borrow a car seat for the initial taxi ride home. My cousin did this with her first.

@Hurradieweltgehtunter wow double congratulations!

@melissa112 I wouldn't worry - if you look hard enough you'll find articles saying that water and air give you cancer. I've eaten a huge amount of crisps lately too and I'm not worried about it at all. Actually this just about sums it up

Kee80 · 17/09/2018 17:31

Hi ladies hope everyone is good. There's loads to catch up on here!

Anyone else started to feel fat and bloated! I hate this pregnancy stage where nothing looks nice on and just look fat not pregnant! Think I need to invest in some maternity clothes!
I feel so frumpy a lately

melissa112 · 17/09/2018 17:33

@Badbadbeans I'm so sorry to hear about your mum Flowers Cancer is such an awful thing. Thank you once again for the advice. I've just got home from work and read the NHS article and it has made me feel better. I'm a statistician actually so I was happy to read that after adjustments it became none significant. Despite my job being to analyse data, when it comes to me personally or family members I just let myself get carried away with the worry and find it hard to trust the evidence. I definitely will speak to the midwife at my 16 week appointment next week about my increasing anxiety.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who has eaten crisps. @HidCat I agree that at some point or another everything seems to be bad for you. That video is so true!!

Thank you all once again for bringing me back from my despair. I really do appreciate all the replies.

melissa112 · 17/09/2018 17:36

@Kee80 I feel exactly the same. I lost about 10lbs in the first trimester through morning sickness and still haven't put it all back on. But despite weighing less than I did when I started, my belly looks even bigger. Its not hard like a bump, it just looks thicker. I did wear some trousers that went over my belly at the weekend and it did look like a baby bump in those, but when I touch it, it's still squishyGrin

Kee80 · 17/09/2018 17:42

@melissa112 10lbs gosh that's a lot!!
I've put about 4/5lbs on but feel like I've put about a stone and half on. I look thicker and wider!

Def going to get some maternity leggings and jeans this weekend!

When I wake up in a morning and laid flat I have a little bump then disappears when I stand up haha

Wineandchoccy · 17/09/2018 18:07

I am just about to go and have my flu vaccination and tomorrow I have my 16 week midwife appt even though I am 17 weeks!
Then it is ages before my next appt because it is my 2nd baby.

Nightmanagerfan · 17/09/2018 18:21

@wineandchoccy I got a text asking me to book my flu jab too - good reminder.

12 week scan (finally) on Wednesday. Can’t wait. According to new dates I’ll be 12+4.

I read the crisp related chat earlier and blame you all for putting kettle chips on my mind! Had to eat a pack on way home from work...
