First timers, don't rush it all - I promise the time doesn't fly and having things to Potter through on the 3rd trimester is worth it to keep you going.
As for finding out boy or girl, I don't know if we will. We didn't last time and will be using what we had for DS. We have very much brought him up as "colours are for everyone" as are toys etc.

NatashaRomanov · 13/08/2018 20:59

Thank you @ladycarlotta and @wordsmithereens.
My not-so-darling daughter has been a right little mardy madam today. I do feel a bit bad, she doesn't know I am pregnant, so I can't really explain why I feel awful and tired all the time!
But I have my scan date now, 29th August. Two more weeks of, "Am I pregnant? Or do I have some weird disease that mimics pregnancy symptoms??"

Marmite2018 · 13/08/2018 21:35

@Wineandchoccy I bought some in the early stages of my morning sickness. I've found they make me more nauseas as they are quite sweet, they do have great reviews on Amazon though so I'm sure they work for some!

orangekitkat13 · 13/08/2018 22:21

@Shampooeeee we want to try and use reusable nappies but thinking might use disposables for the first couple of months. As first timers I think it'll all be a bit too much at first!
I've made a note of your tips, any more would be great!!

luckyleeds · 13/08/2018 22:35

Hi everyone. Sorry haven't posted for a while. Trying to quickly catch up.
We didn't find out the sex with dd but I did do the nub theory and was correct! Ha.
There are lots of gender neutral vests etc at aldi, sainsburys and tesco. The aldi baby event is on next week I think. A bit premature perhaps but some good stuff for older kids too.

MoosterTheMoose · 13/08/2018 23:14

Argh! The thread moves so fast! I’ve been on holiday for a week and impossible to catch up - hope I haven’t missed any major news?!

Had my 12 wk scan today which was lovely - even though had earlier scans she looks like a real baby now rather than a blob. And was moving and everything...

(Looks like I should also update? EDD 3 March, i’m 38, DD 4)

Ahhh I added you in but spelt UN wrong! Ill amend that @MoosterTheMoose also do you know already you're having another girl? Glad your scan went great!!

MoosterTheMoose · 13/08/2018 23:46

I quite like my new misspelled username angelmiracle, thank you! Yes, know it’s a girl because we had the panorama test and couldn’t not find out... no patience! Also thought it might be nice for dad to know/easier to imagine, but we told her today and she’s already asked at least 20 times whether her ‘little sister’ will be here soon - I fear we should have waited a bit because i’m not sure her patience (or mine) will hold up until March!

MoosterTheMoose · 13/08/2018 23:48

Dd, not dad. Luckily my dad has a better grasp of what babies are like.

Our scan is in 3 weeks when we plan to tell DS which is exciting but like your DD he will constantly ask questions on a daily basis no doubt haha. I'm glad your dad understands babies Grin

Shampooeeee · 14/08/2018 06:55

Congrats on the scan MoosterTheMoose it’s pretty cute that your dd wants her to be here already! Ds likes to lift up my top to look for the baby and then say “hello baby”
@orangekitkat13 lots of people do use disposables for the first few months. It’s a good plan, although I promise they are not that scary. You have to do so much washing in the first few months anyway, it doesn’t make much of a difference.
The Nappy Lady is great for advice and she has some videos to explain the basics. Babipur and Yes Bebe are both eco shops that sell a lot of cloth nappies and they have fb groups where you can ask any questions. Look out for discounts. If you are planning to wait a couple of months anyway then there is Real Nappy Week in April when all the shops do great discounts.
I would recommend Cheeky Wipes to everyone, even with disposable nappies. They are cloth wipes that come with a box and you can make up a solution with essential oils and/or camomile tea. They smell divine and are very gentle on baby’s bum! Also the hands and faces ones are great for weaning. I promise I don’t work for the company!

I’m also planning to reuse ds’s clothes, even if we have a girl. I guess I picked mostly neutral clothes because people often referred to him as “she” when he was little!

Newbie2703 · 14/08/2018 07:11

Oooh thankyou @shampooeeee I've not heard of them I will take a look ! Didn't realise Aldi did some too I think they might have an event coming up

Newbie2703 · 14/08/2018 07:13

@hidcat my partner is also not keen but he's not getting his way haha. He says it's cheaper to buy disposable but he doesn't think more than a week ahead when it comes to money let alone a year or 2

HidCat · 14/08/2018 08:10

@Newbie2703 I think there's an issue with your hubby's maths lol. www.theguardian.com/money/2015/jul/04/nappies-which-best-disposables-reusables-cost-ethics. A bit of an old article but still relevant I think.

How are people handling telling their existing children? We're waiting until after the scan but he's already asking if there's a baby in my tummy so I'm think he's picked up on things already. I've avoided the question so far. He knows about the baby we lost so it could just be from that I suppose. Anyway, only a couple of weeks to go, all being well.

luckyleeds · 14/08/2018 09:08

Mine is only 15 months so has no idea about anything. Might tell her the week before the birth if she notices the bump ha.

Orville82 · 14/08/2018 09:17

@HidCat I think we’re going to tell DS after the 20 week scan. He’s not picked up on anything yet and I think that 4-5 months is long enough in the eyes of a 3yo, let alone any longer!!!

ladycarlotta · 14/08/2018 09:32

My dad and his partner have for some reason saved all their cloth nappies from my youngest sister (she's 8 - weird memento given they've got rid of everything else), so we'll be having a go with them but probably not from day 1. I think they mainly had TotsBots and BumGenius; it's quite reassuring to know we have those to experiment with before investing in anything else we might want.

@MoostertheMoose congrats on scan! And how lovely to know the sex. Hope DD's enthusiasm sustains!

ladycarlotta · 14/08/2018 09:33

and @shampooeeee thanks for the tip about Cheeky Wipes. The amount of waste we stand to produce with a baby is crazy - really want to try to keep it down if we can.

HidCat · 14/08/2018 09:51

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't reusable wet wipes essentially flannels?

Wineandchoccy · 14/08/2018 09:58

HidCat dd is 3 and keeps asking for a sister Grin but we were planning on waiting a while because March seems ages away for a little one but I forgot I booked my 16 week appt when I am off work and will have dd with me so may not get away with it.

Shampooeeee · 14/08/2018 09:59

@HidCat yep but they are the perfect size and fit into a tub so you can have them prepared and ready to use. Some people make their own because it’s cheaper but I liked the convenience.

ladycarlotta · 14/08/2018 10:21

I'm now going down a reusable wipe rabbit hole instead of getting on with my day. @shampooeeee, if you had the kit, did you find the tubs got musty? And was the mesh bag system in the 'mucky' tub easy to use?

I could probably snip up a load of bamboo cloth squares and keep them in one of those Pyrex food storage tubs with a lid for cheaper. I'm just wondering if the official system is easier. Also, and this is very superficial of me, it seems a bit less 'crusty' to use the designated wotsits rather than random bits of rag in a tupperware. It might horrify my mother a fraction less.

BadBadBeans · 14/08/2018 10:46

@ladycarlotta I had the Cheeky Wipes kit with DS. The fresh wipes tub didn't get musty at all - you get through them fast enough for that not to be a problem. The mucky tub you just need to make sure you chuck them in the wash every couple of days, and then give the tub a good rinse and dry. The mesh bag was fine as long as I was doing it rather than DH, who was a bit slapdash in the way he loaded them as I remember...

I absolutely LOVED the Cheeky Wipes though. Yes, you could snip up squares of your own flannel / bamboo, but unless you've got an overlocker then they wouldn't be edged nicely and would probably fray / start looking a bit grim much faster. Also, in the kit you get the little waterproof bags to enable you to take them out in your baby changing bag - easier to manage than tupperware.

I must say I never used the essential oils that came with them as I was a bit overly precious about anything other than water going on my baby's bum! I'm sure they'd be even nicer with the oils though.

Admittedly we tend to use water wipes now that DS is bigger and doing more horrendous poos, but I have a stash of the Cheeky Wipes in the kitchen drawer and I use them for wiping his face and hands at mealtimes. They've been in constant use for 2 years and they still look pretty good!

BadBadBeans · 14/08/2018 11:08

@HidCat my DS kicked me in the tummy while swimming last week, and before I could stop myself I responded, 'you mustn't do that, there's a baby growing in there.' He then spent quite a bit of time trying to reach down my swimming costume for the baby! He has remembered, as when someone mentioned a baby (not ours) the other day, he started trying to grope down my T-shirt to find the baby in my tummy. Ideally I wouldn't have told him until later, but my big fat mouth ran away with me. We've now told him that, 'If we're very lucky, the baby will keep growing and you will get a brother or a sister.' Might be awkward if we miscarry again, but hey ho!

Regarding unisex clothes, it drove me nuts last time that it was so hard to get unisex clothes for DS! I found that Next were very good for bright, unisex baby clothing. We got gifted A TON of clothes that lasted us up until DS was 9 months. I literally bought four body suits. That was it. I've only started buying clothes for him in any seriousness as we approached him being a year old! There are lots of lovely little independent companies that do bright unisex clothes, but they do have hefty price tags. Worth following them though and looking out for sales. Companies I really like include Little Green Radicals, Little Hatch Patch (she sells mostly through Instagram), Fred and Noah, and Frugi do some nice bits too.
