Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Hi everyone
I’m due in June , 26 +2 at the moment , second baby. I haven’t been measured with a tape measure yet and just wondered if midwives still do this ? My little boy is nearly 4 and I feel a bit out of touch ! Have a scan at 28 weeks to see if placenta has moved as was covering cervix. I remember having a lot more contact with my midwife last time but is that because it’s baby no 2?

ClareB83 · 16/03/2018 11:39

Yes my midwife still gets her tape measure out each time.

@Watchingmasterchef Here you definitely see the midwife a lot less in a second pregnancy. I saw the midwife at 24 weeks to order my Baby Box (Scotland) and she listened to the heartbeat but said it would be the 28 week appointment before the tape measure came out.

Alice0606 · 16/03/2018 15:54

Oh wow! Aren’t we June mums a talkative bunch?! I spent yesterday setting up the nursery 😀😀😀 and just spent ages catching up! (I am ridiculously excited about having a ‘nursery’ even though we’ll probably move house before bump sleeps in there! I like to just wander in and look at all the baby stuff!)

@Northernbeachbum we’ve bought almost everything second hand (or been given it) too. It’s been good fun hunting down some bargains. I’ve had to stop looking at clothes so I can’t be tempted to buy more, I think we have enough for the first 6 months now.

What’s your Best Buy? I think ours might be the snuzpod for £46 - it’s literally like new - the seller’s baby didn’t like it, so they never used it.

@Dinosauratemydaffodils
We went out and bought a brand new outfit for bump after our 20 week scan and we chose the ‘That’s not my dinosaur’ set. I love it!

DH thinks Mothercare will go under very soon. He works in finance and is often right about this sort of thing. Should be an announcement as to whether they’ve managed to refinance soon enough. Might be worth writing your shopping lists in case they have a massive closing down sale! We haven’t bought a car seat as we don’t have a car - but we’ll probably get a car once bump is here, so I’ve tasked dh with researching car seats now, just in case there are crazy discounts!

@Watchingmasterchef The tape measure has been out here! It first came out at 26 weeks.

@lali1 My midwife printed out a personalised growth chart based on my height and weight which the measurements get plotted on. I’m not much taller than you (1.56m) and my bump has been consistently 1cm per week of gestation and that’s plotted near the 90th centile line, so your measurement sounds fine to me. It’s lovely to get a few points plotted and see the measurements going up. Smile

ElizabethLemon · 16/03/2018 16:50

@Northernbeachbum I can’t wait for a rare steak! And a Campari and soda!

I went swimming earlier and I couldn’t believe my reflection when I had my swimsuit on. I’m pretty sure I’m the size that I was when full term with my 1st. Slightly terrifying!

Ca55andraMortmain · 16/03/2018 17:09

Oh god yeah, I'm definitely bigger this time! Dh just stared at me last night when I was getting out of the bath and said 'jesus I swear you weren't this big full term last time!' delightful. I haven't been measured by the midwife yet but I'll see her when I'm 27 weeks so maybe she'll do it then? I can't remember when they started doing that last time!

ClareB83 · 16/03/2018 17:54

I made it home. So did my elephant feet.

I may only stand up again to pee and go to bed. I hope DH is bringing an 'at your service' mindset home with him.

Ah honey that is sort of funny about the biscuit I am feeling very emotionally attached to all forms of cake chocolate and biscuit at the minute!!!x

ElizabethLemon · 16/03/2018 18:39

@ClareB83 I was on my feet a lot at work yesterday and when I got home I had one swollen ankle, the other one was fine. It looked pretty ridiculous! Hope you get some rest over the weekend.

@Ca55andraMortmain haha my husband is equally as shocked by my gigantic form.

I saw my midwife at 28 weeks and she measured my tummy then so I expect they’ll do it when they see you.

dinksandbinks · 16/03/2018 21:46

Hey everyone,

Sorry my joining the thread was short lived! Work got crazy, and I’m utterly shattered. I too have the elephant feet and have just had to buy new trainers.

Had my 25 week appt this week, no measuring, just a quick listen to heartbeat, blood pressure check and then the matb1 form for maternity leave. 8th June here I come!!

I’m a bit freaked out at how organised you guys all seem... I literally have bought nothing, planned nothing. I have a weeny stack of baby clothes a friend gave me, and I’ve done some vague googling of prams and car seats but that’s it!! Starting to think I should start to take this a bit more seriously Shock

Bedtime approaches here but just wanted to say hello again and wish you all well. Happy weekend Smile

Alice0606 · 17/03/2018 13:49

@ClareB83 did DH oblige with an at your service mindset? That did make me smile! I was wondering, will crossrail make your East-west travels easier? It will be brilliant for us, direct (if very slow) link to my parents in Reading.

@ca55andraMortmain @ElizabethLemon Last weekend I got out of bed and DH exclaimed “Holy Shit, you’re huge!”

@Ca55andraMortmain what type of nappies did you use with DD? Are you using the same ones again? There are so many different types available, I’m not really sure where to start! @ClareB83 your SIL isn’t the first person to suggest not using them from birth - frequent changes, liquid stools, different sizing for newborns with some nappies... I can see the logic.

Our borough doesn’t offer any incentives to use real nappies, but a neighbouring one does. I might have to see if they’re doing any events (maybe in real nappy week) that I could go along to, just to actually see the different types and chat with people.

Doing a nappy wash every couple of days and having an airer somewhere to dry them doesn’t sound too much extra work. A bit more hassle when we’re out and about and need to bring soiled nappies home.

I think I’ll probably go for washables, but want to make sure I do so with my eyes open. It’s a big upfront spend, although my mum has offered to help with the cost Smile so I want to choose the right ones for us!

ClareB83 · 17/03/2018 15:36

He did indeed @Alice0606 - he made dinner and made a cold compress for my ankles. He's a lovely chap! 😍

He's also having a lovely day today looking at motorbikes.

OP posts:
Ca55andraMortmain · 17/03/2018 16:55

@Alice0606 we have used different types! It took a few attempts to find what works for us but I bought a lot of nappies second hand and had no trouble selling the ones that turned out not to be our style so it didn't leave us out of pocket. I like wraps and inserts (milovia or flips are my faves) because they're slim fitting and dry really really quickly and are easy to 'assemble' because you just lay the insert in the wrap, they don't pop in or anything. You also have the option of only changing the insert if it's only a wet nappy and reusing the wrap which makes them cheaper but I find it fiddly to do and in the early days DD usually peed on the change mat while I was swapping out the inserts!
We used cloth from birth and found we had considerably fewer poonamis than friends who used disposables - cloth nappies are elasticated at the back as well as the legs so seemed to contain everything better. We did always use disposables at night, but I'm hoping to use night cloth this time round now I have more confidence with it.

Ca55andraMortmain · 17/03/2018 16:56

Ooh sorry, that was really long, I'm a saddo and love talking about cloth!

SparklesandBubbles · 17/03/2018 23:00

Thanks for sorting new thread @ClareB83. Thought I'd replied to some comments the other day but clearly didn't post.

SparklesandBubbles · 17/03/2018 23:38

Re: monitors. We have the angel care video one. Didn't bother with the mat part as I know from experience with my sisters kids I've often forgotten to turn the alarm off when lifting them up and it all goes off waking up everyone!! Loved the video one though - used it until DS was about 18months. I liked the reassurance I could see him.

@Ca55andraMortmain I'm with you and I've not bought anything new yet for baby 2. I'd quite like to get something special just for him/her though. What breast pump are you going for? I'm thinking maybe the Medela swing. I borrowed my sisters basic electric one last time but it was so noisy. Any recommendations? I'm thinking of buying second hand though and perhaps just buying new parts.

I used second hand bottles for my DS - double sterilised them before using. I bought new teats though.

@MegEmski Hope you are feeling ok? I've been having a lot of crying moments in the last couple of weeks. The stupidest things seem to set me off! It will all be worth it when you have that new bundle in your arms.

@dinksandbinks You've still got plenty of time so don't panic.

I'm feeling relieved as just had the week from hell with my DH away and DS deciding to drop his lunchtime nap and learnt to climb out his cot with sleepbag on plus he's been really tricky all week. It's been super challenging that's for sure and my patience has been tested to the full. Only thing I've not missed is my husband's snoring! I can hear him from the sitting room and dreading going to bed!

GreggsSausageRolls · 18/03/2018 15:45

Marking place! 29+2 here

Northernbeachbum · 18/03/2018 21:17

Thanks for the monitor advise, I keep watching out for second hand ones now

I'm kind of interested in reusable nappies too, but how do you actually deal with a poo nappy.....I'm sure that's an incredibly stupid question. How much extra washing do you think you do with them?

Ca55andraMortmain · 19/03/2018 08:45

@northernbeachbum - it depends on whether or not they're weaned. Basically, milk based poo is water soluble so you don't need to do anything - you can just wash them and the poo washes away in the machine (I do a cold rinse first and then a long wash). You just need to take the nappies apart if it's a pocket nappy so that all the different parts get washed properly. Once they've started having solids then the poo has to go down the loo before you wash. People have different ways of doing it but I tend to hold the nappy under the flush and it just washes off. It sounds like more of a big deal than it is to be honest! You can use liners to make it easier too if you want to. (Liners only catch solids so there's no point using them before weaning because the poo is liquid).

Once the nappies are in the wet bag you don't have to touch them again -you just unzip the bag and put it in the machine and the nappies come out in the initial rinse cycle. Now that DD is a toddler I would say it's probably an extra 2 washes a week but when she was younger it was more - probably 3 or 4 nappy washes a week because newborns go through a lot more changes. Being honest though, DD had reflux and went through masses of clothes changes so our machine was on constantly at the start anyway so I didn't hugely notice the extra from nappies!

SparklesandBubbles · 19/03/2018 09:48

Anyone else suddenly start feeling nauseous and dizzy? I reached 30 weeks on Saturday and have been feeling sick and dizzy all weekend. This morning thank goodness my DS is at nursery so I've come back home and gone straight to bed.

Northernbeachbum · 19/03/2018 12:08

@sparklesandbubbles I've had the dizziness if I try to pick stuff up from the floor and take too long about it, no nausea though. Worth giving the midwife a call?

@Ca55andraMortmain that's really interesting. I think I'll get through the first few weeks and then see how we go but definitely later on I'd like to use them so thank you for the advice

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 19/03/2018 12:13

I've started feeling nauseous again but I'm pretty sure baby has moved up and I think they must just be pressing into something which causes a constant sense of motion sickness/dizziness when I move too fast. I'm almost 28 weeks. I'm due a scan on Friday and was just planning on asking the sonographer (who is also a midwife) if that made sense based on baby's position.

SparklesandBubbles · 19/03/2018 14:31

@Dinosauratemydaffodils @Northernbeachbum. I feel like baby has move round a bit too. Maybe it's that. I'm feeling a bit better having had a nap this morning - maybe I was tired as DH snoring was keeping me awake last night and then DS was stirring so I was up between 1-2:45am then DS woke up at 6am as he heard DH in the shower Sad. I'll call the midwife later if I don't feel better - baby is still wriggling away so I'm sure it is fine.

ElizabethLemon · 19/03/2018 16:52

@SparklesandBubbles I’m 29 weeks and been feeling really queasy for the last few days. Honestly I’ve had waves of nausea every now and again throughout this pregnancy so not too worried but it is a bit miserable. I also have a gross taste in my mouth!

I have to say I’ll be glad when this pregnancy is over, I’ve found it a lot harder the 2nd time round.

SparklesandBubbles · 19/03/2018 23:48

@ElizabethLemon yes I have a gross taste in my mouth too. I think I'm possibly also eating too big meals. Tonight I had quite a bit of pasta and even though I ate at 6:30pm I still feel like I've not properly digested it at all!! I've actually felt, on the whole, much better this pregnancy than my first but I guess it's just the final stretch that is now pushing our bodies to their limits!!
