Welcome to a new space!
I felt the baby move last night....had been getting sharp shooting pains just below my ribs on one side - I couldn't stand so laid down for an hour or so, and then I was entertained. V special isn't it to feel it again?!

In my eagerness to be prepared I have bought 2 packets of newborn nappies. Am measuring up for a not-small baby and getting worried nappies are wrong size. So Jimjams I'll ship you my lot if that's true and I pop before you.

Jimjams · 13/11/2004 19:38

ROFL Nimme. We've actually done a little bit of preparation today (cleared out our room and shifted furniture so there's room for the crib). I only ever have big babies as well so I suspect he will be in newborns for 2 minutes (once he hits 10lb I'll try and go back to cloth again- depends a bit on how much interest ds1 takes in pooey nappy bins and how obsessive he's being over the washing machine- at the moment I can't use it when he's around)

SoftFroggie · 14/11/2004 22:05

Just wanted to post and say hello - due on 11 Dec, but not really been in the pregnancy forum much as so occupied with toddler / house / work etc... hadn't got anything ready for baby upto a week or two ago, but have started doing stuff now - better before than after the birth! Still haven't sorted bag or washed baby clothes, though. All you waiting for your first - enjoy it - pregnancy isn't the same the second time - little / no time to look after yourself, as you are so busy looking after the other! Only just beginning to think about the fact we are about to have another baby.

lilymum · 15/11/2004 16:19

congrats janos! Anyone else feeling imminent??

PotPourri · 15/11/2004 17:19

Hi all. Welcome Softfroggie.

Saw the midwife today and everythign is fine, baby is head down but still really high. And she said before anything else that sa s it is my first it will probably be 2 weeks late. She then started the whole debate about due dates AGAIN, but agreed to accept mine as I am sure of the last period date. Oh humph. Feeling a bit down that I have another potentially 4-5 weeks to go. I had kind of talked myself into thinking the baby would be arriving in the next couple of weeks (am due on 1 Dec after all).

Apart from that all is well. Hope everyone else is doing ok - any more girls getting signs?

Portly · 15/11/2004 17:44

Congratulation Janos.
I am quite slow at writing on here, but still here, still the same. A daft question, but do you know when the baby is engaged, is it really obvious or is it one of these things only the midwife knows??
Potpourri - I know quite a few people who had their first babies early, so you never know. I am also hoping it comes early, I am feeling like a weeble now, but then if it does, it means a house full of visiting relatives within about 5 seconds which I don't know if I can cope with!!

Is anyone else self-employed? I sent off all the forms at 26 weeks, as told, but now I have found out that my application hasnt even been looked at yet, and was told " you are lucky we havent had it on our desk for 20 weeks without processing it" - Great!!

Anyway, got the first "parent craft" evening thing tomorrow so should be entertaining(?)
hope everyone is feeling well

honeybunny · 15/11/2004 18:16

Had a scan last week to check placenta position as it was over my cervix slightly at 20weeks, now its moved out of the way, yahoo! However still looking at ECS as had 2 CSs previously. I'm booked for 31204 and busy counting down. Congrats to Janos..... lucky thing. I'm insanely jealous that your little one has arrived safe and sound. I always get really stressy at this last bit worrying about babe..is everything ok, hope nothing was missed on scans etc and having yukky scarey dreams (people who know my past pg history will know where thats coming from).
Portly- wouldnt worry about whether babe is engaged or not. It just applies to how far down your baby's head is in relation to your pelvic rim. Every midwife I met in the last few weeks of ds1's pg told me that the baby's head was well down and engaged only to be seen by the obstetric consultant and told that he was miles away. Hence his early arrival didnt materialise, in fact he was 17days late and born by CS (failure to progress after lengthy induction) because his head was too big to fit through my pelvis. So much for the midwives' expert opinion!!

fortnight · 16/11/2004 11:59

Congrats Janos!
I have just repacked my hospital bag, things are getting exciting now.I have at least 3 weeks to wait, am fairly sure I won't be early,or even on time for that matter. Jimjams, when I was pregnant with dd (2nd pregnancy),she dropped and came back up a few times, and I think this one is the same. And when I was expecting ds the midwife said she didn't think I'd make it to full term as he was so well down...10 days after edd he arrived. I've just been looking at the lists of most popular babies' names, and am pleased that none of my choices are there. Now,just dh to persuade......Has anyone seen the chinese horoscope chart in December's Mother and Baby magazine, which tells you if you're having a boy or a girl? It's probably rubbish, but it was right for my other 2...and says this one is a girl.If anything I think I'm having a boy,but who knows? I am getting fairly impatient though.

Nimme · 16/11/2004 19:18

Found the thread at last!

Just checking in to say I really don't think I'll go the distance. DD1 was 2 weeks early. If this is same that means Sunday - argh...... Builders will be here until sometime next week - I'm squeezing legs together as best I can.

On a positive note - had pedicure and hair coloured today. Remember feeling a bit grotty after last time and thought I would perk myself up in advance

Washed all baby clothes and put in drawers - finally starting to sink in a bit more. Can't believe I'm about to do this all over again...

hana · 16/11/2004 23:31

nimme -squeezing your legs together

I've washed and put into drawers all the little baby gros as well - car seat wiped down and moses basket in corner of room waiting to be filled! Haven't packed bags yet.

I've been going to a refresher NCT class the past few weeks and the leader said something today that I didn't think was fair or even true - she certainly didn't back it up with facts and I didn't feel I could challenge her (she's v v big on home births) anyways she said that a planned homebirth was safer in a lot of ways than a planned hospital birth'
anyone?

I am having this one in the hospital and am happy with my choice, but that just didn't sit quite right with me.

Hi hana, thanks for your message. It's getting exciting now though I do suspect I might well end up on the December thread! Take care. Bunnyxx

Nimme · 17/11/2004 09:09

Hana - would the name of your NCT teacher be Marie by any chance??

honeybunny · 17/11/2004 09:09

Cant imagine how a home birth is safer than hospital one, but then I'm v pro hospitals. Have to be really with an anaesthetist dh and myself a physio. If you could plan to have a trouble free delivery, then being away from the potential hospital bugs would be safer, but then, child birth isnt an exact science and no-one should or could guarantee you a "trouble free delivery". You can hope for one, but the what ifs would definitley start creeping into my mind. Fetal distress, mother distress, placental abruption, severe tears, flat baby on delivery, no resus equipment available, long trek to hospital even assuming an ambulance might arrive within a few minutes...... I could go on, but its sounding like something out of Holby City or Bodies!! Hana - go with what you are comfortable with, dont be swayed by one person's experiences. Just because your NCT teacher had good home birth experiences doesnt guarantee you will, but now I'm definitely shutting up before I'm accused of scare-mongering!

Nimme · 17/11/2004 09:15

Ditto honeybunny.

My NCT teacher was exactly like Hana describes and it did p... me off initially. I'm all for drugs, hospital, doctors etc and will be asking for an epidural on arrival

Hana - my teacher did lay off on the subject as the course progressed and I hope that yours will do the same. In the end I found the course very informative and got a lot more from it than I anticipated - especially with the home birth chant start. It is Marie isn't it??

PotPourri · 18/11/2004 11:43

ooooh it's getting exciting now. I too have been washing like a mad woman and getting all the little baby clothes organised. I am starting to get nervous about the whole thing, but strangely that is mixed with impatience. Now that I have stopped work I am really enjoying being a lady of leisure and have started lots of craft projects to keep me busy - just in case I have to wait an extra 2 weeks after my due date.

Hana, I don't like the sound of the home birth being pushed down your throat like that. I must admit I feel freaked about going into hospital so plan to stay at home as long as is physically possible. However, I think you should be able to make your own choices. Stress does inhibit labour as does adrenaline, so if you get stressed in a hospital environment then that would make it more likely to be a difficult labour - apparently it is really common for women to arrive and their labour stops. But then, like honey said, you could get stressed NOT being in hospital with everything available to you. The main thing is that you feel happy with your choices though, so just go with that. And if you feel really strongly, you could complain about the attitude to your local NCT, or the Head Office.

lilymum · 18/11/2004 13:42

potpourri - grrr, midwives. What a stupid thing to say. Hope you are a week early, that would serve her right.

portly - you can sometimes tell if your baby has engaged if your bump moves down, or if you no longer feel so much pressure under your ribs, that kind of thing. Sometimes, it's really obvious to onlookers who will rejoice in telling you "golly, that's dropped hasn't it" or words to that effect. You might need to go to the loo more often, as it feels as though a cannon ball is sitting on your bladder.

nimme - your post re pedicure has just reminded me to get haircut, leg wax and eyebrown shape done!

I'm not due until just after Christmas, so haven't done anything yet in terms of packing hospital bag. Dug a few moth-eaten baby grows out from under the bed, and that's about it.

Very confusing that this thread is now under a new topic. Not fair of mumsnet when we're heavily pregnant - I thought I was being particularly stoopid when I couldn't see the thread...

Ronniebaby · 18/11/2004 21:20

Nimme keep those legs crossed gal.

MW said she is happy with (roo) so I dont need to go back for another 2 weeks, which means 38 weeks, I said I'm hoping to not have to see her then.

Ronniebaby · 18/11/2004 21:21

Ahhhh no wonder I couldnt find this thread its been moved. tut

OMG I've been looking for this for days.

I've had 2 previous c-sections so went to the antenatal clinic to book my next one (had been told I had no choice had to be a section etc) and the consultant suggested going for a VBA2C So suddenly I have to start thinking about birth. I am pleased as I did not enjoy my 2nd section and I have been worried about the recovery with 2 young children, but also am suddenly quite nervous. eeek.

Nimme · 19/11/2004 20:16

Hana - had to be.
She did go on a bit about home birth and Sarah Spoors and her marvelous birthing pools. 3 (out of our group of ten) ended up deciding on home births - good for them, I'm still going to Kingston and having an epidural thank you very much! I have since found out she is the NCT home birth person. I deliberately didn't go to the breast feeding day (in Kingston)as I didn't want to feel bullied into anything (last time I managed to combine the two for about 4 months). Funny how the pressure to do this or that is already on and we haven't even given birth yet At least we have already been there and done that once and can hopefully just tell people to sod off (in that very non-confrontational way that....)
I hope you will feel that you are getting something for your money - at least you can gorge yourself on Jaffa Cakes [grin[

Jimjams - thought my water had broken yesterday and although builders still here was just generally quite excited about meeting this baby at last. Nothing too eeky or to be nervous about - just contractions, panting, breathing, screaming, grunting, pushing and a b.... mess at the end of it (as my DH so nicely put it last time!) I hope you get what you want - nice to have a choice.

Have just ordered my first ocado shop which include a Dettol aerosol - DH tells me he is going to spray everything with it first. I'm sure we'll be very popular as DH jumps in front of midwife spraying bed etc.

Off for very nutritious sausage sandwich - food standards really have dropped this last week or so - and I don't care.

Jimjams · 20/11/2004 08:26

Ah I've done labour before (18 hours of it!) but that was with lots of fiddling. I won't allow them to fiddle wth me this time- off to section if it starts going pear shaped (consultant has written that in my notes).

So had your waters broken???

honeybunny · 20/11/2004 10:26

I'm now booked in for my 3rd CS.....3/12 roll on the day!! More nervous about this one as different hospital. Previously at Kings with an obstetrician I had complete faith in and a team who had all worked with my dh and knew they would do their utmost to make the experiences good ones. Dont know people at this local hospital. Dh has at least worked with the obstetrician so I know I'll get consultant lead care again but havent liked my mw and the hospital looks really grubby. Just hope they have a side room for me!
Brave lady, jimjams. I thought about it for a few nanoseconds, VBA2CS, as feel this is my last pg, but was put off by the idea that if I did manage to go into spontaneous labour, the recovery post CS after labour is much longer. Not something I fancied with 2smalls at home already.
Just remembering last time with ds2, I'd be having this one on Wednesday if we were going for the same time. Wonder if I phoned the hospital, wecould bring it forward a week. Beginning to think I'd get more sleep if this baby was out!

hana · 20/11/2004 11:11

honeybummy - that's my bday!! A very special day to come into this world
NImme - have never done food shopping on net but think I'll be a big fan once baby 2 arrives.
Saw a midwife yesterday and now don't see anyone for 3 weeks - seems such a long time away. All fine. Am quite happy to have epidural once again - must start thinking about massaging my bits to help them stretch.......and get some raspberry leaf tea. Anyone else trying those things?
DH and DD going to circus today so I've got a rare afternoon to myself - will watch crapppy movie on tv I think surrounding by non nutritional foods!
