Welcome to a new space!
I felt the baby move last night....had been getting sharp shooting pains just below my ribs on one side - I couldn't stand so laid down for an hour or so, and then I was entertained. V special isn't it to feel it again?!

PP - I think my overall preference will be for a water birth and if it is not available then stay at home. However that does depend on the consultant giving the approval and that I am not more than 2wks early (don't see consultant until 38wks)

My visits to the midwife had come down to every 2 wks and I though that (well per the Bounty book) that they were every week from around 36wks. - Anyway saw her last wk at 35wks, then next visit is not til 38wks (consultant), then 39wks with the midwife. We have not yet discussed details of the birth (only preference for water/home birth) nor completed the 34-36wk checklist in my notes. Is this normal??

Read somewhere about applying sweet almond oil as it is suppose to help prevent tearing during birth. Anyone know where I can get it - looked for it in Boots/mothercare catelogue but no joy.

redshoes · 08/11/2004 11:00

Neal's Yard sell it

PotPourri · 08/11/2004 11:40

scuba. I have heard that wheatgerm oil is better as it has more vitamin E. Personally I am struggling to apply the stuff as it is quite difficult to reach when you are this big . But I am giving it a go as I have heard it can make a big difference. I got mine from Holland and Barrett.

Chemists usually sell little bottles of sweet almond oil - I remember getting a little bottle to prepare for getting my ears syringed a few years ago, or in the ethnic foods section of the supermarket (next to spices etc).

I haven't gone through any list with the midwife either. I am pretty clear from all my surfing, NCT and mumsnetting what I would ideally like as my birth plan, so I am going to force the midwife to go through my print out with me on Monday.

Redshoes- I feel for you about the lack of maternity leave from your older kids. I realise what a drama queen I am being now!

lilymum · 08/11/2004 13:28

red shoes - think maternity leave from older children should be a legally-enforceable requirement. Certainly know that at present I feel much too tired to be responsible for a cheese sandwich let alone 3 little girls.

scubamum2be, I think that if everything is progressing fine, then midwives don't always do weekly appointments in the last month - that has been my experience, but there is no reason why she shouldn't see you more frequently if that is what you want.

Ronniebaby · 08/11/2004 23:28

Scuba - I'm with PP, I used wheatgerm oil, and it did help, it was advised by my MW, and I had to get DH to apply it, which he thought was great, sad man

Ronniebaby · 08/11/2004 23:31

Scuba - my midwife has said she will be seeing me once a week until EDD day, I prefer it as I'm getting closer in case I have any questions or fears etc

scubamum2b · 09/11/2004 18:10

thanks ladies for the advice - got me some wheatgerm oil from Body Shop and a new job for DH to do

Also got some rasberry leaf tea (holland & Barrett)

Re MW. I may have a chat with (another) MW at a class tomorrow and see what she says as things on the whole are fine, just thought they kept a closer watch on you in the later stages because of higher(?) risk of pre-eclampsia.

Scarily I think I have just about everything (or on order)apart from nappies!! I have it in my mind that baby will be born a couple of days either side of the due date, which is probably another reason why I'm fretting that I am not seeing anyone/MW for 3wks.

btw John Lewis have various Emma Jane nursing bras.

redshoes · 09/11/2004 18:42

PP - I am thinking of a waterbirth - just been looking an inflatavle on the 'pregnancy' thread (or childbirth maybe)...I have tried twice but the first time the hospital wouldn't let me stay until I was 35 mins from giving birth, so they only got the pool half-filled by the time dd1 arrived, and the second time I had a foul midwife whose 1st day it was and refused point blank to do a waterbirth....I could hire a pool at home, but wouldn't want my 3 other children around and don't have anywhere I could send them for any length of time...so maybe I'll buy a cheapo pool and if I labour overnight use it, and if not be philosophical (again!) - wondering whether ANYONE gets to use that hospital pool!!
Also, the bigger I get the more tempting it sounds to float about in a big pool (even if it's inflatable...)prior to the actual labour

hana · 09/11/2004 23:22

when I was in labour with dd I wanted the room with the pool - and got it - but the hospital didn't have any hot water. Grrrrrrrrrr!!!! I passed on having a cold birth experience needless to say!

Lilymum LOL at cheese sandwich!
Hana are you going to try this time for a WB?

Jimjams · 10/11/2004 19:28

My bumps really dropped- I'm only 32 weeks - and 3rd pregnancy- thought they were meant to stay high longer.... I am a bit worried about this one coming early as I have had to be very physical this pregnancy to keep up with ds1. I have now put him on his belt when we'reout and about as he was running away again and I've had to really peg after him a few times (he's a very fast 5 year old). DS2 is copying and running as well- but at 2 much easier to catch.

I haven't done anything yet (and I mean anything). So could really do with it not being early!

eidsvold · 10/11/2004 19:37

jim jams popped in here to see how you were coping... my sil's 2nd one kept popping in and out of her pelvis/cervix... this one of mine has been down for three - 4 weeks and then this week when seeing the consultant is not engaged at all... has come right back up again also. hope that helps.

Janos · 10/11/2004 23:52

ohh congrats Janos - looks like you are the first of the December lot .

Have you looked back at the posts you made on the 2nd/3rd Nov? ('baby not engaged', 'driving instructor thought you were going to have the baby there & then'...... If only you knew then!)

ginger29 · 11/11/2004 14:22

Congrats Janos! Makes it all seem really real for me.
I had the midwife round today to drop off home birth kit. NOw sitting ominously in the corner of the living room. It should really spur me into getting everything else ready.
Morning sickness seems to have come back - anyone else suffering? Ihad to come straight home from work yesterday as I felt so ill when I got there. Can't wait to finish next Friday! Have also been asked to do a big presentation on Thursday morning in front of loads of people. Hope I can stop feeling sick for long enough to get it out.
We debated getting a pool at home but don't really think we have the room - how big are they? I am hoping to spend lots of time in the bath anyway.
So, who will be next?!

georginars · 11/11/2004 14:22

Hello everyone - have just been released from the hospital having been trapped there since Tuesday with pre-eclampsia. However, it seems very mild and the baby is fine so they've let me go home for now and no need to deliver right now - maybe next week if my BP goes up again though. But I still wouldn't have beaten Janos - congratulations, must have been a complete shock!

PotPourri · 11/11/2004 15:01

Oh Janos. Congrats! You lucky thing. What is your lovely little boy's name then? I'm off to the birth announcements to get all the details. Am well chuffed for you (and just a little bit jealous ! )

I just noticed today that I have stretch marks under my bump. Am well depressed, I thought I had escaped them. They literally appeared over night. I'm finishing work tomorrow and to be honest am a bit freaked out now that it is actually here. I am really scared of this massive change that is coming... One of the girls from my NCT class had to have a ceasarean today as her baby was breach. She was really disappointed, but it all went well and she has a lovely little girl. It has all made me feel quite weird...

Oh hormones!

Nimme · 11/11/2004 15:13

Janos - many congratulations, look forward to all gory details when you're less zonked

Ronniebaby · 11/11/2004 21:08

Janos - ooo you lucky thing, CONGRATS.

Janos · 12/11/2004 12:38

Just o let you all know that I have put my birth story in Birth Announcements if you would like to read it.

PotPourri, my little boy is called Adam. Must go as I have to feed him! Will be back as soon as I can

Bronze · 12/11/2004 15:13

Came on here to be nosy and to say hi as Im due right at the end of Nov and so will probably give birth in Dec and am now wishing I hadnt as I am highly jealous of Janos. Congratulations by the way.

Jimjams · 12/11/2004 19:08

many congrats janos! Slightly frightening as I still haven't done any preparation at all yet (other than someone gave me half a pack of newborn nappies - think they're newborn- haven't looked!)

Jimjams · 12/11/2004 19:17

eidsvold you're still hanging in there then! I'm off to the antenatal clinic next week so will hopefully get a section date....
