Guinness bad.

twelveyeargap · 07/03/2007 13:20

Oh SOH! Go home, please. If I'd listened to my friends yesterday and gone home and rested like I was told, I wouldn't have ended up in the hospital getting checked out. The pains stopped when I got there and I'm sure it was because I was lying down resting instead of sitting at work like a twonk going, "Oh no, I really have to interview a muppet for my maternity cover."

Really honey. You must have had an awful fright. Shame there weren't any policemen around to fine the bugger for being on the path. They do that in the City, you know. On the spot fines for cycling on the pavement. Anyway, don't be a heroine to your work. It's not worth it.

FWIW to you ladies weighing yourselves; I was doing ok at first, but have now put on two stone. I started out at 11st 9ish - my top weight shouldn't be over 10 as I'm so short, so it was always a losing battle. I think I'll stop weighing myself! Whatever I weigh after the birth will be more than it should be so either way I'll be eating rabbit food all summer. A size 12 is some way off. One day I might even see size 10 again... Actually, my friend was over on Saturday and she's training to be a personal trainer. She laughed when I told her that all the hills around Muswell Hill would have the weight off me in no time - right up until she got here and realised I wasn't joking. Pushing a 13kg buggy plus baby around here is hard work!

Speaking of buggies... I might pop over to the buggy shop and order today.

Thanks to last year's May mums. I had DD in May and although it was a looonnnggg time ago, I do remember how lovely it was to have a summer baby (and to push them out before the weather got stifling!).

Sorry, forgot about the iron supplement. The midwife yesterday said that Floradix and Spatone are very good, but do take a long time to get into your system. She mentioned some other thing called Prega-something which is supposed to be much more rapidly absorbed. Can't remember the name of it, but will try to remember to ask when I see my midwife on Monday.

SOH - are you going for a homebirth? You need to get your iron levels up if you are. Either way, ask the midwife about the best one for absorbsion. Even if it means taking some fibre drinks as well to keep you moving! And lots of vitamin C too. That helps you absorb the iron.

Mrsjaffabiffa · 07/03/2007 13:25

Right I'm off, I've either gone dilusional or my laptop is playing tricks on me. There was a huge space between my apricots post and the yummmmmmmmm bit and now it's gone????

SOH, why's guinness bad? Because you are pregnant or because you don't like it or don't drink?

twelveyeargap · 07/03/2007 13:31

MrsJB - I think the placing of your post next to the stupid ad made it go funny as the text space is different. As it moves down the thread, away from the ad, the YUM bit spread out.

ShowOfHands · 07/03/2007 13:31

[Teetotal]

Gap's gone because advert over there>>>>> is no longer in way of the Yummmy bit!

Thanks for all advice and support.

TYG- good point about homebirth, must sort iron levels. Just can't get to the shops.

twelveyeargap · 07/03/2007 13:34

Oh and Guiness does have iron in it, but it's pretty low compared to other foods.

1 pint of guinness - 0.3mg
100g ready-to-eat apricots - 3.4mg

However, I like it and it's the one drink people don't bloody frown at if you drink it whilst obviously pregnant.

twelveyeargap · 07/03/2007 13:35

SOH - was under the impression yesterday that there is something they might prescribe, rather than you buy directly. COuld be wrong. LG&T might know what hte hell I'm on about.

Eat some spinach in the mean time.

ShowOfHands · 07/03/2007 13:56

Homebirth website recommends that florriidixxywhatsit or spatone. And no more caffeine. How much caffeine is there in earl grey? Can't give it up, I'm addicted! When the doctors phoned this morning (only had blood test yesterday) they said they had a prescription ready. I assume it is tablets. Yeuch. Can't collect them though as am at work when they're open. Buggeration.

Mrsjaffabiffa · 07/03/2007 14:19

DOH about the advert, didn't even think about that, lol, Thanks, glad I'm not seeing things.

Thats really interesting about the Apricots / Guinness. Just try not to eat too many apricots in one go. Don't blame you on the iron tablet front SOH, I had a prescription from MW arrive in post a while ago and I haven't got them. Yukkkk
Take it easy with that shoulder.......

ShowOfHands · 07/03/2007 14:24

Lovely midwife just phoned me at work and said that they will not be cancelling my homebirth because I'm anaemic. She's psychic! Or in her words 'of course you're anaemic you skinny little woman, you're carrying a little person. The homebirth's your decision and my advice is go for it'. She then said lots of things about apricots and steak and told me to make every effort to get the iron count back up, but not to worry too much.

I think I love her.

Mrsjaffabiffa · 07/03/2007 14:28

SOH, have looked on dh's box of sainsbury's earl grey tea bags and it says nothing about caffeine, but I don't think thats unusual. Normal tetley says that the averagecup of tea?? contains 50mg of caffine and the averge cup of brewed coffee contains 100mg.

Sorry about recommending Guinness, probably NOT the best choice for a T-totaler, can I ask and you can tell me to pee off if you want..... do you not like the taste of alcohol or do you not like what it does. I'm interested because my friend next door is t-total now and she says it is because she drank so much as a student that she's been there done that and can't stand the taste of it anymore.

Mrsjaffabiffa · 07/03/2007 14:33

Thats great about the homebirth, I hadn't realised being anaemic would jeapordise that. The sheer exhaustion prepares us for the months to come.

The apricots have definately heled me, I'm not big on steak though.

twelveyeargap · 07/03/2007 14:45

How lovely SOH. That's great news.

Flying out to the buggy shop. Happened to see a thread in "Products" about mountain buggies and someone said "everywhere is out of stock".

Panicked and rang the shop - it's true! Distributors will have a shipment of the buggies from New Zealand in a few weeks, but the carrycots not due until Mid May!

Bloody knew this would happen. DH kept mocking me (in a light hearted way) about not letting all the fuss about pre-ordering baby products get to me. Harrupmh!

ShowOfHands · 07/03/2007 15:05

Oh God.

DH just phoned. Has failed his drugs test for getting into the police force. WTF? He is a tee-total non-smoker and has never taken drugs.

What do we do?

[blindpanic]

He's in floods of tears.

Mrsjaffabiffa · 07/03/2007 15:17

There must be some mistake SOH, is he on any medication that could have affected it or things like muscle build stuff?

he needs to contact the people whodid the test and find out more info, surely it's not a cut and dry thing?

((((((((((((more hugs))))))))))))

ShowOfHands · 07/03/2007 15:27

He is on no drugs or medication.

It was a hair test and he had gel on. Nothing else.

They won't speak to him about it.

BefnalBub · 07/03/2007 15:28

maybe they got the bloods mixed up?

quick note on the iron supplements, mine fell from 85 to 15 in 4 weeks so the dr said to watch it, though she didn't want to prescribe constipation inducing tablets. I bought a box of spatone and have been having that in a glass of prune juice together with a piece of fruit for vitc absorbtion purposes. think they are checking bloods again this week - will let you know if its working!

BefnalBub · 07/03/2007 15:29

cross posted - won't be bloods then

Mrsjaffabiffa · 07/03/2007 15:34

Why can't he get in touch with anyone about it. There has to be a mistake, I know it's sooo hard and I would be screaming at someone, something, but PLEASE try to find out a bit more before you panic. If he honestly has never done anything to cause this result then he must be given the chance to appeal and set it right.
It could be something like the hair gel. There was a programme on the other evening where two elderly Chineese people got stopped trying to get into OZ, there shampoo swab was reading positive for anphetamines but it turned out after alot of testing that it was just a reaction with the shampoo?

ShowOfHands · 07/03/2007 15:38

Been researching on t'internet:

"Hair testing is a deeply flawed technology "

"If you take Ibuprofen (the over-the-counter pain killer) you will test positive for taking cannabis. This is a fairly well known 'false positive'. Others famously include poppy seed bagels leading to failed tests for Opium and night-nurse style remedies causing people to fail for cocaine"

He does take ibuprofen for a sore knee sometimes and had a cold recently- not sure if he used anything like night nurse.

Mrsjaffabiffa · 07/03/2007 15:39

God, SOH, this must be awful for you and dh.

It's just not right, these tests are supposed to be here to protect people not put them under pressure and cause upset. He must be distraught, it may not seem like it at the moment but I really think that something will work out, try to look positive if you can.

ShowOfHands · 07/03/2007 15:51

Started a thread to ask for help and somebody asked me if I'm sure he hasn't been experimenting (I know I'd wonder the same in this situation). He keeps saying he's so ashamed that people will now believe him capable of this. He wouldn't do this. Never. Never. Never.

I feel sick. I can't stop crying.

Mrsjaffabiffa · 07/03/2007 16:02

I'm watching your other thread too SOH, people are going to ask that especially as they know even less about you than we do. Ummmmmmmm if he was trying to get into the police force would he really feel that the time to experiment. Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmm NO!

It's going to be tough for a while, but don't believe it's the END yet, please, if the test is known to be unreliable then this will not be the first time they will have had surprising results surely.

I'm crying with you, SOH, I just know how devastated I would be in a situation like this. I spent a day crying when dh announced he had no work lined up and thats very small compared to this.
