Our Head of HR is so terrifying she is known by staff as 'The Gorgon'. I reckon that is explanation enough haha.

Once I've finished maternity I am going to reevaluate and most likely apply for other jobs at other institutions. I figure that now is not the time as have so much going on health wise as well as baby wise!

DaisyQueen · 05/01/2017 14:12

Ouch. Just slipped on the stairs at home, no real sign of injury except a very red bum cheek. I'm just glad I never dropped my 3 year old when I went. Being tired really does make me a disaster

10Betty10 · 05/01/2017 14:13

If things get worse then I'll ring the Union for advice (I'm a teacher so we have the NUT who are pretty good)

Spindelina · 05/01/2017 14:28

I had to tell work as soon as I found out (because I work in a hazardous environment). But I work in an office where we all take turns to go on maternity leave, and it's been fine.

rhodes2015 · 05/01/2017 17:40

Lovely scans little jay/Betty ! Both Very clear

I have told work they've already done a really pointless risk assessment (I sit at my desk all day) and give me info on the maternity pay/leave entitlement etc and been good so far with me going to appointments.
I've already had to start to train my cover though.

10Betty10 · 05/01/2017 18:23

I'm so glad you guys have had a good time of it work wise- is very encouraginngto hear it doesn't have to feel like this! I know my experience isn't the norm, my work haven't been great about a lot of things (non pregnancy related) lately anyway!

Notyetthere · 05/01/2017 19:29

Rhodes same here. I told my boss at about 5 wks as I was sick from then on but the risk assessment was completed today. I am the first pregnant employee my boss (very young) has had to manage so he didn't realise he had to complete it immediately. Anyway, conclusion was that I can't now go on site which is rather annoying as we have some exciting projects going on at the moment. High risk of slips, trips and falls.

Hi Betty thanks for the encouraging words on the jeans!

I think I will play it safe and not say I am pregnant yet, my review is tomorrow. And the next couple of weeks are crucial on planning my years work so after I am satisfied with that I will announce it. My 12 week scan is next Thursday anyway. Sorry to hear about your work, I do think schools are harder places for flexibility on time off sick/conpasionate/maternity. My SIL is a teacher and she barely got any time off when our MIL passed away. It was hard. But be positive you have an amazing baby growing inside and despite all the symptoms it is apparently worth it! Night all. Way past my bedtime. Smile

Spindelina · 05/01/2017 20:19

DH and I worked through some figures yesterday evening (which may go some way to explaining how little sleep I got last night). He's a SAHD, so on the one hand my salary is our only income, but on the other I won't have to leave the baby with strangers when I go back to work. If I go back after six months, we lose an average of about 25% net income, which we reckon we can just about manage but the coffee and cake budget would be minimal. 17 weeks would be much easier financially, and let us have a holiday in the summer half term.

Decisions, decisions!

Bawbles · 05/01/2017 20:29

Ahh Spin it's good to plan and have options.

We haven't looked at finances at all. Currently we live in my house which needs loads of work, I pay all the bills and DP has a completely renovated house that's sat empty for the last five years which he pays mortgage/bills on.

We've got a tenant ready to move into DP's house then guess we will discuss finances as I want to keep separate money however DP will need to pick up bills while I'm on mat leave and we can share stuff once I'm back at work.

not I've had 2nd risk assessment today and boss made a referral to occupational health.

I've been getting some pain in my tailbone when sitting all day but this week it's gotten worse and by lunchtime it's really uncomfy. Like I'm sat on a bruise, I'm ok stood up or walking it's extended sitting that troubles it. Hoping they'll find me a nice rubber ring to sit on!

Wore a maternity dress today for work, Vertbaudet one, i felt quite nice and smart.

BeapBeap · 05/01/2017 20:33

With DD I took 8 weeks maternity, and i think I'll do the same again as couldn't stand being away from work for so long and being indoors. Good thing is I work from home a lot so still see her 70% of the week

Notyetthere · 05/01/2017 21:12

Spin I ought to sit down with DH and work it out too as I am the main bread winner in our household. DH will be the primary carer for our DC when I go back to work. Our current plan is that he will go part time to fit it around my hrs (35hrs/wk). What is your maternity allowance like at your work? I get 6 months full pay, 3 months statutory and 3 months no pay. I guess I might go back to work after the initial 6 months and DH will take 3-6 months parental leave. All of this is just a discussion that we have not written it all down to ensure it all works. If DH goes part time then household income will fall by 20%. I think it might be manageable.

I would have liked to take off longer than 6 months but our savings pot has enough other demands (very old car making dying noises/sofa/mattress that are all on their last legs that we will require replacing this year) that we might need my full income to keep the savings pot fed!

There might be a glimmer of hope though, a colleague of mine has just come back from maternity leave and her records show that she has 55 days of annual leave available to her this year. They have carried it over from last year. At least it means I don't have to take so much time off at the beginning of maternity leave. Maybe break off at 37wks instead of 31wks just because I have to use up annual leave. So I might be able to stretch it to 7 months.

Sorry this is a long post.

Ah thanks Mawita. I am really looking forward to it- think it's easy to get bogged down with work stuff and forget how much there is going on to be excited about baby wise. And yeah, if your review is tomorrow and you haven't had scan yet, nobody could ever get annoyed with you for not saying anyway!

Notyetthere · 05/01/2017 21:30

Babble that sounds like agony. If it gets too bad then you might need to get a referral for physio.

Lovely about the dress, I wore one on Tuesday and it was very comfy.

I told work pretty early too, because I work in an environment where there are risks. Everyone is being really nice and encouraging me to take it easy for the next 6 months - if only I could!

I'm planning on taking a full year off. My OH has a new job much closer to home and more money, so we'll have a lot more coming in. I have some savings but I'd prefer not to dip into them. I read in the maternity policy at work that payroll can do your salary so you get the same every month - rather than 90% for 6 months then stat then nothing. I'd prefer that I think.

Spindelina · 05/01/2017 21:39

Notyet I work for the NHS, so I get 8 weeks full pay, then 16 weeks half pay + SMP, then 13 weeks just SMP, then 13 weeks unpaid. Which isn't too bad - last time I changed jobs at 24 weeks, so I was on maternity allowance.

All the permutations of money vs time are doing my head in - especially as I have to factor in an unknown baby's hypothetical ability to sleep and feed, an unpredictable reaction from DD, DH's thoughts and feelings, the 6 week summer holiday at the beginning, and Christmas at the end. Aargh.

Spindelina · 05/01/2017 21:45

After DD was born we both went back part time - I did four days, he did three. Neither of our jobs were very secure - he was self employed and I was on a fixed term contract. He effectively got made redundant shortly before I was offered a permanent full time post, so that made that decision for us! Our income is a bit less (we earned similar amounts, so my five days instead of a total of seven between us), but especially now needing to cover school holidays, it's all working out very well. Though he is very much looking forward to being able to honestly answer the constant questions about what he plans to do now that DD is at school!

Notyetthere · 05/01/2017 21:58

Lally now that is an idea. I will check with my company to see if they do that. That would take away the headache of working out how to ensure the pay is not overspent in some months leaving us short in others.

Spin I am actually looking forward the summer weeks where I hope to spend lots time outside, in the garden visiting family, etc. I think DH is also considering taking a couple more weeks off in combination with paternity leave just to make the most of the good weather with baby.

ChuffCloud · 06/01/2017 07:50

Hi all, can I join please. Due 6th July with Dc2, still haven't told everyone yet as had issue in first trimester and have been scared to! Hope everyone is well xx

LuciBee231015 · 06/01/2017 08:55

We're going to struggle while I'm on maternity. I earn more than DH. I only get 6 weeks 90% and then stat. Last 3 months unpaid. I plan to go back after 9 months and whack holiday on the end.

So I got some maternity jeans from h&m last night, omg they are so comfy! Got some maternity tights for work as well so they don't dig in to my belly anymore.

I'm 16 weeks today and definitely look preggo, proper little bump now 😁

Don't see midwife until I'm 18 weeks tho! Hurry up I want to hear the heartbeat!

CatRash · 06/01/2017 09:15

Luci I'm in a similar situation to you. I'm the main earner and my firm only offer statutory maternity pay so our finances are going to take a beating but we'll make it work. My husband is self employed so doesn't necessarily have regular income just to make things harder.

I'm planning to work as long as possible before birth, save hard as hell while still earning, the take off the full statutory period, then accrued holiday and then take the rest unpaid so I get a full year.

We'll make it - we'll have to! I'd rather spend a couple of years living on a shoestring then regret not taking the time off later in life.

Now just have to think about paying off the £3k credit card bill somehow Grin

Seahawk80 · 06/01/2017 09:22

I'm the same Luci and Cat just the legal minimum for me. DH and I earn similar amounts though.

Anyone else really struggling to believe they are still pregnant? I have a midwife appt on the 19th but not sure if they'll listen to the heartbeat. So tempted to have another scan and found a place where it was only £40 but it's probably a waste of money and I should save it towards things for the baby.

LuciBee231015 · 06/01/2017 09:23

Well I want to try and save but buying baby bits is expensive!! Will try as much as I can. Luckily I got a bonus in December which managed to clear our £3.5k credit card!

That's what I think, we'll find a way to manage! We have no choice!
