Who was it who said they have gestational diabetes? I've been diagnosed with it today too Sad Would welcome any advice. Feeling a bit down as had my heart set on a midwife-led unit.

Nojo82 · 16/09/2016 20:49

So i had my vq scan which showed no clots thankfully. Was booked in for an echo on monday but i said to the junior doc why do i need to stay. Can i not go as an outpatient. So she went and asked her senior who said that was fine but wanted to keep me in for further monitoring overnight. I said whats the point, i promised that i would go home and take it easy.. so they finally agreed.

So im still suffering from breathlessness and high heart rate. So there are some further investigations to be done but just glad to be home.. looks like ill not be back to work. I need to look after myself and this has been a huge wake up call..

Nojo82 · 16/09/2016 20:51

And forgot to say thank you for all the well wishes.. it really means a lot x x

sueevone · 16/09/2016 21:10

For those of you not on the Facebook page, I collected my Emma's diary packs today x2. I made 2 copies of the vouchers and took them to both Boots and Argos and they gave them without issue. If anyone wants them, you'd need to sing up on the website via www.emmasdiary.co.uk and then scroll down for the vouchers, you're entitled to one of each but I tried my luck in both stores and they didn't say anything. X

December 2016 Babies - Thread 6: Growing bumps and looking for bargains
StubbleTurnips · 16/09/2016 21:25

sue are the Emma's packs like the bounty ones where they then send you shite loads of stuff and sell your marketing details on? I fell for that last time and don't want to get scuppered again Grin

goinggrey1978 · 16/09/2016 21:41

hi everyone, hope your all well, over the past few days i've been feeling like 'oh my god what have i done, changing my life so dramatically' is this just normal nerves that i'm just over 13 weeks till my due date??

TipBoov · 16/09/2016 21:51

littlebear I have GD, I cried all day when I'd been given the diagnosis! So far it's not so bad, I have to be very very aware of what I eat, and choose snacks sensibly, e.g Apple on its own makes my blood sugar jump up, but with cheese or peanut butter it's ok.

TipBoov · 16/09/2016 21:52

Also I was really annoyed to have GD at first because I have zero risk factors. My BMI is fine, no family history etc. I only had to have the test because my midwife insisted on consultant led care because it's an IVF baby.

LittleBear01 · 16/09/2016 22:16

Good to hear that you're finding ways to control it Tip. Mine is an IVF pregnancy too.

At the moment I'm worried about extra risks it might bring, but hopefully will feel reassured about seeing diabetes midwife next week.

How often do you have appointments due to the GD? I'd like to give my work some warning about the implications.

sueevone · 16/09/2016 22:23

stubbleturnips they let you opt in and out of marketing during the sign up, but I'm sure some companies will still get your details. I figured if it's for offers then I'll see how it goes. Registered last Wednesday and so far one or 2 emails but nowhere what I thought I'd get. I guess to get free stuff you have to make a small deal with the devil.

lilydaisyrose · 16/09/2016 22:43

Hello!

Posting so this thread stays on my I'm On lost - I'd lost it!

I haven't posted for a while as feeling really stressed by how organised everyone is on here, by comparison I'm SO not. We've barely bought a thing. ElodieS I feel exactly like you, I have 2 children at home already at school with loads of after school activities & homework etc, a job, my own business, do a few other bits and pieces of work on the side and have a house to run; so I barely have time to think about this baby and do feel quite disconnected. I think other people are more excited than me - I do love this wee baby, but I do find it difficult to bond in utero.

We have no baby things, nowhere for it to sleep and only a couple of vests and sleepsuits. I have 12w left though so am just hoping I'll get there in my own time! Do people really only have a few things to go in their hospital bag to get?!? I dont even have a car seat! Mind you, the most urgent issue for us, is to get our house sorted out. We live in a small 2 bed - baby and all baby things will just have to fit in. So we've been to Ikea tonight and spent £££ on new storage solutions, which does feel like small progress. So it's a weekend of buidling cabinets and clearing out crap this weekend!!

In other news, I had a 28w growth scan this week, all is absolutely fine - all growth bang on 50th centile. I have another growth scan at 32w. GTT on Tuesday, which I am feeling anxious about as a positive result would put a real spanner in my home birth plans.

Lots of big kicks and movement now!

DH and I haven't discussed names AT ALL! Mind you, we always name them once we've met them and always within a couple of days, but we should discuss our ideas I suppose. My children's favourite names are Tim or Kevin!

I have read the thread but promptry forgotten all the news!!! Love to you all!!

TipBoov · 16/09/2016 23:03

Apparently GD is caused by our bodies not dealing very well with the extra progesterone, so I was wondering whether IVF could increase your chances of GD...although I didn't have it in my first pregnancy, which was also IVF.

I think appointments are the initial appointment, then one 2 weeks later, than a growth scan every 4 weeks.

So I had the initial appointment with the diabetic midwife and a dietician, and a growth scan two weeks later with a follow up appointment with the diabetic midwife, so she can check my levels and see how I've been doing. Touch wood I've been either under the recommended levels or very slightly above, so I'm hoping I'll be able to decrease testing. I'm currently doing it 7 times a day (before and after meals then before bed) and my fingers are quite sore now!

If you're on Facebook there's a group called gestational diabetes mums that is really supportive and has some great tips.

LittleBear01 · 16/09/2016 23:18

Thanks Tip, that's really helpful re:appointments and I will look up that FB group Smile

I am still on progesterone pessaries (cyclogest) so wonder if that's contributing to it. Will make a note to check with consultant when I see him next.

barkingtreefrog · 17/09/2016 06:37

Weird how yet again there are different rules around the country, I'm under consultant care due to IVF/recurrent miscarriage but I've not had the diabetes test!

Had my 28 week growth scan yesterday and on the 50th percentile so all good.

I'm still refusing to buy anything for the baby but various people have passed a few bits on. MiL told me yesterday she'd bought a little pink babygro with flowers on it because it was adorable and she couldn't resist. I HATE baby pink, and already have masses and masses of pink baby clothes passed on from a friend that I am debating attempting to dye (but don't want to spend loads of money on dye as it doesn't seem to go that far and spending money changing the colour of clothes seems to defeat the object of accepting free ones, I could just spend the money buying clothes I actually like!)

Having known quite a few friends have premature babies one thing I will do is start making a list of things for the hospital bag and begin buying for that.

When it comes to baby stuff Amazon prime will be my friend. I'm still determined to buy nothing until the point I know I want it, as so many friends have told me they bought stuff they never used.

Woke up screaming with cramp at 4am again. Still can't move my leg without it threatening to go again. Need to up the tonic water and bananas further!!

Nojo hope you enjoyed being back in your own bed!

OP posts:
StubbleTurnips · 17/09/2016 06:55

thanks sue I may pick up the packs then, just don't want the Bounty level of crap after!

barking cramp is doing my head in, it's nearly every night now at about 3-4am.

ermmm · 17/09/2016 07:04

i was on the first few threads and the disappeared. DD is 19/12/16.
These threads fill up fast took a while to track you lot down lol.

I was away visiting family for 4 weeks and my sickness all but disappeared. Come back home and it's back with a vengeance😤.

Had my 26 week appt with midwife - felt a bit rushed didn't get to make her take note that I want to be in a MLU. Due back for bloods in two weeks so will make sure I go with a list of what I want to ask.

As to sex of bump- I so did not want to know so at the 20wk scan I left the room and let them tell DH. So only he knows lol.

Thanks KitKat there are so many of us, does anyone know how many?
Do you think there's more than on other antenatal threads?
Thinking my birth pool might not be available at the hospital around Xmas!
My new wake up time is 5am now baby has a definite rhythm.

goinggrey1978 · 17/09/2016 09:29

Hi ladies can't remember who said it, my pregnancy is consultant lead too, as it's an ivf baby plus I have other medical conditions as well, I haven't had this diabetes test thing yet and it hasn't been mentioned, I stopped taking ivf medication at 18weeks and I also had my thyroid medication doubled at 18weeks and I'm being monitored with that as well, when am I supposed to pack the hospital bag?? And when should I make sure I have the car seat for, as it's not in stock in the colour I want atm?? Also when do I need to set up the crib and nursing chair and other bits?? Was planning to do some of this during the half term holidays, is that soon enough?? First time mum getting nervous now and don't really have a clue!!

KitKat1985 · 17/09/2016 09:30

Nojo hope you are recovering at home. It must be lovely to be back in your own bed again. xx

I've had a week off work this week. It's been lovely just to have some free time and focus on my family for a few days. So I really don't want to go back to work next week. I'm hoping I've only got 6 weeks left when I go back though (if they've approved my leave request so I can use up some holiday before my official maternity leave starts) so I'm trying to focus on that. I do nearly 15 hour shifts though and they are really starting to drain on me!

Found out this week that because DD has gone up a year group at nursery that's she's going to be in her first Christmas production this year, as she's now old enough to take part. Smile No way do I want to miss it, but it's on December the 11th so somehow I'm going to have to work out how to go with a very young baby! I imagine I've also somehow got to make a costume whilst looking after a toddler and newborn... Ekk! Oh, and I have bugger all art and craft skills

LittleBear01 · 17/09/2016 09:51

Barking and Goinggrey, I think I had the GTT test as I have a few risk factors (dad has type 2 diabetes and I've PCOS) more than due to this being an IVF pregnancy.

You're both teachers/ex-teachers too? My IVF nurse said she sees more teachers, solicitors and police officers than any other profession!

goinggrey1978 · 17/09/2016 10:11

Hi littlebear, I'm a learning support assistant in a primary school, my nan had diabetes in later life controlled by tablets, that's all on my records, I'm under normal nhs care now just have lots of appointments because it's an ivf baby, I'm rhesus negative blood type, I have thyroid issues which they all seem worried about!! It's my first baby, also my I used donor sperm and donor eggs as well, not sure if me being over 35 is also a factor as well!! Sometimes I feel like I'm constantly at the hospital or clinic for something, as well as getting regular blood tests too, I just got an appointment physio for the numbness in my upper thigh caused by a trapped nerve in my back which is getting worse now!! And I'm only allowed to take paracetamol for it!!

happydays00 · 17/09/2016 10:11

barking and lily I'm so happy to read that there are other people out there who are not set up and ready to go! We have brought a cocoonababy and a bouncer as got a great deal on both but that's it.

I'm due in 11 weeks, but there is a chance I may be induced in 9. I wasn't even going to start turning the spare room into a nursery until after 17th October as we have house guests for a weekend before? Is this a stupid idea? I'm a FTM so don't really have an excuse other than I'm a last minute kind of person Confused

DartmoorDoughnut · 17/09/2016 11:08

We've bought a travel cot to use as a playpen/baby containment area, we bought an actual playpen last time around but it's massive and with DS's toys it would be chaos now! Plus he travel cot is up off the floor so less drafty, don't know why we didn't just do it last time round tbh!

Oh and just wanted to say buy a nose sucker thing and some saline spray! DS had a constant snuffle bless him and it made feeding difficult, guessing this one will be similar particularly with it being December!

TinyTickler · 17/09/2016 19:23

I have my first stretch marks and want to cry about it. This is despite bathing myself in bio oil and creme de corps daily. Any tips anyone?
