Ps congrats charly!

alpha
I'm not offended as such. I do think it's a bit insensitive to say you don't like double barrelled names when a few people have already said that they have them. It would be more tactful to say that that you wouldn't choose it yourself but don't object to others choosing it. However, I understand that you didn't intend to criticise, and I realise that I'm probably being over sensitive about the issue, most certainly not helped by the fact that I'm exhausted (stayed up late last night!)

Going to stop rambling now and try and have a nap Grin

I didn't mean to be insensitive, I was more trying to explain why I chose not to double barrel as I had considered it, and say that it's not the ideal solution for everyone. If you want the same surname as your husband and you don't like double barrelled names, then there aren't many other options! But I couldn't care less if anyone else does!

Dustycorners · 06/09/2016 13:47

Lovely scan pic Charly!

When DH and I married neither of us wanted to change our surnames, so we didn't. Our names don't go together so double barrelling was not an option. We considered both taking a new name but couldn't be bothered.

DS has my surname. There were a lot of personal reasons for this, but even if they hadn't applied I still would have pushed for him to have my name as I personally dislike an automatic assumption that dc should have the dad's surname. I think that it's up to each couple to decide what works for them, but that it should be a genuine discussion. I'd love it if as a society we could see it as normal for men or women to change their names upon marriage (or not) and for kids to have either mum or dad's surname if they happen to be different. I don't care what people decide, I just hope it's a genuine choice.

Happygojo86 · 06/09/2016 13:58

I think in Spain they have a completely different tradition for naming children my Spanish friend explained it but I forgot, so useless point really!

Anyway, I feel like I have come down from the euphoria of last weeks scan and now I am just tired and lethargic again. I really need to do housework but I can't be bothered. I am also supposed to be doing 10,000 steps a day for cancer research. So far today I have only done 3889 and I am sat on the sofa watching DD destroy my living room.

Cloeycat · 06/09/2016 14:17

I don't think I responded to all your answers about Antenatal classes- thanks for taking the time to let me know what you are planning. I'm still struggling!

They are holding my place for 3 days- we aren't considered 'low income' but still struggle with large unexpected outgoings (anything over about 60 quid) so we won't get a deduction in price. I'm really tempted to go for it anyway and just stick it on the credit card but feel that's not very sensible with all the other upcoming expenses. Argh! So hard to decide. There doesn't seem to be any other non NCT in my area.

NameChange30 · 06/09/2016 14:28

Happy Try not to feel guilty if you don't feel up to the housework or the extra steps. If you need to rest, you need to rest Smile

Cloey Sorry if you've already said this, but is the NCT Essentials course an option for you (instead of the Signature one)? If so perhaps you could go for that, as it's shorter and cheaper? If not, I don't know what to advise as I'm hesitating myself!

Dusty I'm grateful for your post as I share your opinion and it has made me feel less like the odd one out! Smile

Just thought I'd share what we've done re names as it's different from other's experiences so far mentioned. There are so many options!

alphabook · 06/09/2016 15:11

Cloey I enquired about NCT and because I live in London it's extortionate! The signature course I was interested in is £350 Shock There's an essentials one which is £200 but thats still really expensive. Everyone raves about the friends they made through NCT and I feel like I'll need that as I don't have any mum friends nearby. Obviously it's luck of the draw but it seems like the easiest way to build up a group of friends locally who are all in the same boat. But I also feel like for £200+ it's an expensive way to make friends!!

Happygojo86 · 06/09/2016 15:26

I did nct and although it was good and my group has regular meet ups, I don't think they are the be all and end all. Definitely look for alternative independent companies as well. I made friends at my local breast feeding cafe. I went for help with DD's latch and stayed for the cake and sympathy! I definitely recommend it. Some areas have 'infant feeding' cafes too where they are also trained on formula advice and can help with all sorts.

Cloeycat · 06/09/2016 15:41

They only do signature in my area which is frustrating. To be honest it's probably not that hard a desicion and I could make the price work if tried hard enough but I've had a raging headache for 3 days now so everything seems harder and they keep emailing me to remind me I've only 3 days to confirm my booking which is stressing me out!

NameChange30 · 06/09/2016 15:58

I'm getting those emails too! Very annoying because the hypnobirthing people still haven't replied to my enquiry Angry I don't feel I can decide until I hear back from them.

Well the posts illustrate what an emotive and difficult issue surnames can be. On the bright side I'm glD in not the only one in a bit of a dilemma about it.
NCT does seem expensive, it would help if I knew what the NHS options were but I've heard nothing from them. Has anyone else had info from the NHS on classes yet?

alphabook · 06/09/2016 17:09

Does NCT get booked up that quickly? It seems so early to be booking anyway! I was planning on just waiting til my 20 week scan and making a decision then.

alphabook · 06/09/2016 17:10

I got given info about NHS classes at my booking in, but I can't actually book until 25 weeks.

SuperDuperJezebel · 06/09/2016 17:23

I've taken DHs surname and the baby will have it too, just because I think it's the much nicer name of the two of ours, I never liked mine, people always spelled it wrong, his is... I don't know, quite a friendly sounding surname in my opinion! It does limit some of of our name choices, being a colour so I feel like Ruby, Scarlet etc are out, or baby will sound like a paint chart!

charlybs · 06/09/2016 19:14

Anyone else's tummy muscles and like.. the inside of their belly button feeling really weird? I stretched on the sofa just now and it hurt!

SuperDuperJezebel · 06/09/2016 19:56

I have had a few twinges... I wondered if I'd overdone it, I did find myself carrying the world's heaviest toddler AND a basket full of clean washing up the stairs today. As my GP said though, it's to be expected because "it's not like there's not something going on in there"!

Dustycorners · 06/09/2016 20:15

I've been having some round ligament pain over the last couple of days - sharp pains in my tummy when I move in a certain way or too suddenly.

Carolann8584 · 06/09/2016 20:29

OK ladies after a long wait and busy day here is our little bean sucking its thumb Grin
