Pretty unusual to get an internal scan at that point rosey so no need to worry.

ItsMagicYouKnow · 31/08/2016 21:56

Rosey I had both with DS. I'm quite slim but DS was buried into my pelvis (never had a big bump, even at 41 weeks). At 13+3, the sonographer started with an external scan and decided he couldn't get a good enough look so "went in" so to speak! This time I had internal at 9 weeks and external at 12 - this baby must be placed differently, and I have a sizeable bump already, or at least it seems bigger than last time.

NameChange30 · 31/08/2016 22:02

Rosey Is there a particular reason you're anxious about internal examinations? I know they're not exactly fun (!) but they're not awful either, and I was wondering if there was something specific that people might be able to reassure you about?

I've had lots of them (for gynae issues, not pregnancy-related) so I'm way too used to it now Grin

Sorry Rosey that was exactly the answer you didn't want, right?! I wouldn't worry unnecessarily though, it's really not that bad. Well, it's not physically uncomfortable in any case, it's not as bad as a smear test and they use lots of lube Blush And as for the modesty thing, well, in France you have to strip off completely every time you go for a check up at the gyno's, and more often than not, you have to make small talk while completely starkers... I've never got used to it, and I never know how to stand/where to put my hands etc. Awkward!

So anyway, internal scans never faze me too much...

NameChange30 · 31/08/2016 22:08

Oh God, I remember once going to see a gynae when I was living in France, and she did not only a vulval/vaginal examination but also kneaded my breasts (checking for lumps I guess), there was something completely mortifying about being examined and prodded in both places Sad

But it won't be like that at all Rosey!

Got my 12 week scan date through for Wednesday next weekSmile feeling soooo nervous now...

ItsMagicYouKnow · 31/08/2016 22:16

Yes! Name luckily mine is nice and gentle but yeah, it is a bit weird (it's like one of those nightmares where you're the only naked person in the room, there always seem to be interns or receptionists coming in and out too, and obv OH when it's pregnancy related). I've only had one, er, intimate examination in the UK and I had a nice sheet to cover my modesty - no such luxury here! Unfortunately the UK nurse also happened to be my landlady at the time, so I wanted to die from embarrassment for a completely different reason!

Anyway, my point is, you probably won't have to have one, and if you do, it won't be as bad as it would be in France Grin

MissClarke86 · 31/08/2016 22:19

It's unlikely you'll have an internal unless it's an early scan.

I found internals fine - they put blue paper across your bits for modesty and look at the screen, not you, so it seems less invasive than a smear.

Rosey135 · 31/08/2016 22:20

I think I just don't like the idea of someone messing around down there, I've never liked smear tests either. But Ill get over it.

Dozygirl · 31/08/2016 22:33

Not wanting.to worry you but you've got a lot worse things to come before you have this baby rosey. You'll soon be very used to people having a good feel down there and some.of it.is really not pleasant.

Magic that sounds like my worst nightmare!! I don't mind having stuff done as long as I'm covered but to do it all uncovered I couldn't cope with.

neonrainbow · 31/08/2016 22:56

Love prangry! That's me for sure!

All three of my scans were external, first at 9 weeks. just drink loads so they get a decent picture.

ItsMagicYouKnow · 01/09/2016 04:10

Dozy when in Rome...
I second the drink loads thing though. Didn't know for my first so that might have had something to do with why I needed an internal. I did this time, and she got some great pics!

Turns out I get prangry at 4:30 am Confused Not so much angry as a million and one thoughts (work) that I needed to get down on paper while eating a bowl of cereal. Might watch a bit of Bake Off to soothe me and try and go back to bed...

SuperDuperJezebel · 01/09/2016 06:23

I had a big emotional melt down last night, over something my DH thinks is utterly trivial, but I sobbed for about an hour. Feel like an idiot today, still genuinely upset but it was over the top. Please tell me it's hormonal?

Happygojo86 · 01/09/2016 07:03

Ive had a few internals as I have my cervix measured due to having pre cancer cells removed when I was younger. It is absolutely fine, they don't go in that deep, the room is dark and they used lot of lube. The chances of you needing an internal in a standard pregnancy is quite slim.

As for other internals, remember you don't HAVE to have them. I chose to for a sweep and to check my progress in labour but it was my choice. You can ask in your birth plan that they only do internals if clinically indicated so not to just check normal progress. Like if they are worried about baby or whatever. In which case you will not care who's up your foof!

As for scanxiety and prangry, I can't take the credit but they are good terms!

Happygojo86 · 01/09/2016 07:04

Oh and super in my last pregnancy I had a meltdown over custard! Seriously! I also had a meltdown because I thought OH was going to leave me because I was tired, fat and boring Grin

neonrainbow · 01/09/2016 07:05

Super yep just hormones i reckon. I've had a couple of instances like that but luckily nobody else has seen me!

Aaaarrrrggghhhhh!

Anyone got a scan today?

Tutuloves · 01/09/2016 07:45

Super no your completely "normal" I had a mini meltdown last night because my DH forgot to get me a Pepsi from KFC. Poor DH

Dustycorners · 01/09/2016 08:42

Congratulations to everyone who had lovely scan news yesterday.

I've had the grimmest 24 hours with food poisoning, but I think I'm out the other side now. Still feel dehydrated and sicky, but symptoms seem to have almost stopped. Ugh, I'd rather give birth than go through that again!

Cloeycat · 01/09/2016 08:53

Super I had two meltdowns yesterday, definitely hormonal as I wouldn't normally react like that... But I do feel like I am perfectly justified to get upset by both of them!

charlybs · 01/09/2016 09:12

Rosey I've had internal scans for other things and honestly - they're fine. Way better than a smear. But it also sounds pretty unlikely unless baby is hiding.

I absolutely love prangry. Just explained it to OH who was like "yep that's you". Cheers!

To be fair I did kick him off the sofa a few weeks ago because he wouldn't go to tesco to buy me doughnuts Blush I'm blaming hormones, you should too super!

I have a pregnancy card and I'm not afraid to use it haha. *waves it around

SuperDuperJezebel · 01/09/2016 09:23

To be fair, it's something that's ok to be upset about - all my friends are going away for NY and we just can't justify the cost - so I was sad and experiencing serious FOMO but I dont think it was worth 2h of sobbing over! What a twat! Tried to be extra nice this morning to make up for it!

Carolann8584 · 01/09/2016 09:29

HI Ladies

Glad I'm not the only one Prangry! think its distracting me from thinking too much about scan. Shut myself away in the office again yesterday wanted to be violent towards one of my colleagues, don't think that would have gone down well. I was sooooo irritated with her. Feel a bit isolated at work recently as only 1 person knows and that's only because she caught me mid vomit in the ladies. So am just keeping to myself too "busy" to stop and chat.

Woke this morning feeling nauseous again, was in the middle of making breakfast and lunches when I had to quickly stick my head out of the back door to throw up.

There had my moan, feel better Smile

Good luck for those having scans today, its nice seeing the lovely pics being posted xx

Rosey135 · 01/09/2016 09:36

Thanks everyone for your advice, I'm pretty sure I will get over it if it comes to that but would rather not have to.

Thank you Happygojo it is reassuring to know you have choices in these things as I already feel like the midwives can be quite pushy and it's difficult to stand your ground.

Happygojo86 · 01/09/2016 13:07

Rosey it's your pregnancy, your baby and your body. Although I believe medical advice is there to be listened to, you absolutely have choices. This is why you write your birth plan beforehand so you can question things and it's also really important for your birth partner to know your choices so they can advocate for you when you are high as a kite on gas and air and telling the midwife you are going home to watch bake off when you are 9cm dilated (transition is a 'fun' time!)
