Feedmenow-
if that midwife is not supportive and you don't like her.... you can always write to you SOM (supervisor of midwives) and ask that an alternative is provided and that you are not to see midwife X at all. Just remember that services have to be provided and you deserve a supportive mw.

Hi everyone else- I am feeling a lot better today. annoyingly I am spotty this pregnancy- haven't had that before and although I feel better my face looks awful!!!

Anyway Scan apt came thru for the 19th.

boobooma · 08/01/2007 18:10

Blimey, go away for a day and there's a new thread with 50+ postings.

Back at work today and blurted out that I'm pg to my 2 colleagues. Just can't help myself. Was going to wait til 12 week scan, am only 8 weeks tomorrow ish, ho hum.

Found out today that a client of ours is 28 weeks pg, she'd hidden it from everyone until xmas! Wow.

Great news Uki and Paula, take it easy and I hope you feel better soon.

sexkittyinwaiting · 08/01/2007 18:54

Hello this is a message for feedmenow
Hi, I had a scout round for statistics but this is the best I could come up with. You could always type in the name of your local mat unit and c. section rates and see what google brings up here

Yes I did have to put up a fight, but it was only with one consultant and that was at 36 weeks. I changed consultant .

I also had the help of a fab doula who supported me througout and helped me to manage the maternity system, e.g she got appointments for me at the hospital to see supportive midwives etc after having encountered the arsey consultant.
I also tried to prepare myself mentaly for a vbac, you know being really positive etc.
I feel it is important to mention that women going for vbacs shouldn't be induced. So if your baby is too late for you to bear you are likely to end up with a section again. If you can bear to wait for your baby to turn upwhen he/she is good and ready then you stand an excellent chance of having a good natural birth.

My first vbac baby was 3 weeks late. It was the wait from hell, but when she decided to come it was completely without comlpication. And she had a WHOPPING great head.
If you can hold on please do DON'T let them pressurise you at this late stage when you are tired and fed up. If you want to try for it and you and baby are fine then leave be. I had to go back to the hospital quite regularly and beg for more time. They were very good when it was clear that scans etc showed that we were fine.
Any more questions, please feel free to ask

sexkittyinwaiting · 08/01/2007 20:15

Hi feedmenow, they weren't quite as big as yours thank heavens !! From memory I think it was 37 cm with dd1, dd2 was about 36.5cm with a hand up to boot and dd3 37cm with an elbow at the side. Me, I'm stretched to buggery worth it though .
Also I'm not a very big person at my fighting weight.
I've had a doula with all my vag births, couldn't contemplate doing it without, absolutely marvelous. they mother the mother.

Uki · 09/01/2007 10:57

Hello All
Thankyou for your wishes and congrat's, letting myself feel a little pg now, told a friend and aunt now.

Found out today that my cousin in Austria, I am in Australia (slightly confusing) is 10 weeks pg. I'm so excited, It is her first.

I hope I can get her to come on here, might end up a big family with conkertree and purple rabbit

any one else's family got Aug pregnancies?????

hormonalwreck · 09/01/2007 11:29

redtent - I'm spotty too which is a real pain since I noramlly have quite clear skin. That said, I haven't had any ms for which I thank my lucky stars! Apparently it calms down in the 2nd trimester (only 2 weeks to go

I was looking into the nucahal scan thing and a friend of mine asked her mw why they're not offer on the NHS if they're so good. Her mw told her that the scan is not that accurate and they check for Downs when they do your bloods at 14 weeks anyway. If you're in a high risk category you'll be get a scan then!!! I decided not to have a nuchal scan because I don't want the stress of not knowing - I think it's better for me and baby to be relaxed knowing that if there is something wrong they will tell me.

Anyone else heard this sort of thing?

GillL · 09/01/2007 13:05

I'm not spotty, although I was with my first pg. Only just got sore boobs yesterday but I think that was because my bra is slightly too small. I got out my old maternity bras last night. I hate not wearing underwire.

No one in my family is due in August but my SIL is due in April. It's her 3rd baby and her oldest one will only be 2 years and 2 months. By August my FIL will have had 5 grandchildren in 2.5 years. I like to think eveything happens for a reason though. His wife died 3 years ago so I hope that having all these grandchildren goes some way to helping with the grief.

boobooma - I can't believe she hid her pg for 28 weeks. Did she not have a bump?

tokentotty · 09/01/2007 13:12

Hello, hello.... Have been lurking a little while after being tipped off about this site by a friend and finally thought it was time to introduce myself This is my first pg and am 8.3 weeks, due approx 17th Aug. Have in fact booked to have a private scan this evening to try and calm some of mine and dh's nerves.

GillL · 09/01/2007 13:22

Congratulations tokentotty! How are you feeling?

Good luck with the scan tonight. Hope it puts your mind at rest. I can't wait for mine but I'll have to wait several weeks.

tokentotty · 09/01/2007 13:35

Thanks GillL ! I have to say I just couldn't wait. Has taken a long time (nearly two years) to fall and we had booked an IVF consultation appt for the end of Jan back at the beginning of November, so when I found out I was pg it was a bit of a shock to say the least. Am too nervous to cancel the IVF appt until I've had a scan to let me know that my little peanut is still with me... Am luckily not feeling too bad. Just the usual really, tired, bit nauseous etc although the worst thing has to be my boobs! They're soooo painful and have been since my first missed period in Nov.

I take it that it's your 12 week scan you're waiting for now then ? How are you feeling ?

GillL · 09/01/2007 14:12

Yes, it's my 12 week scan I'm waiting for. It will be my first one. Just can't wait to see the heartbeat to set my mind at ease. I've got my booking in appointment with my midwife on Friday 19th Jan. She was the same one I saw with my first pg. She's very nice.

My boobs were very painful the first time round but luckily they're ok at the moment. I've had to dig out my maternity bras though as I seem to have outgrown my normal underwire bras.

I'm feeling nauseous all the time and have to keep eating, although I'm very fussy about what I want and sometimes I can make something I think I want and take one smell and decide against it. I'm constantly exhausted and glad I work in an office as I don't have the energy to be up and about. I'm hoping that will improve soon.

tokentotty · 09/01/2007 14:18

So with regards to your booking appt are you just going to go along with everything the same as you did the first time or did you learn anything you'd do differently ?? I did mine last Friday but as it's my first I have felt a little 'all at sea' about things. I just got a voicemail from my GP's practice mid-wife asking me to call her back. I did just now and she answered by saying "can I call you back please - who is this?". Made me feel a bit icky as started having strange thoughts about what she could be doing at the same time as answering her phone.......

I work in an office too and am glad of it I must say. Also, despite working in London I drive to work which is making me feel like the luckiest girl in the world.

GillL · 09/01/2007 14:45

Well probably it will be the same. Although, when asked the question about breast or bottle feeding I'm going to be quite honest. Last time I naiively thought breastfeeding was going to be easy and, as they constantly go on about how breast is best for baby, I assumed I'd get all the help I needed. I was wrong. I got a horrible midwife who came round to me for the first 4 days and she refused to send round the bf counsellor and it all went horribly wrong. This time I'm going to tell her that I would like the bf counsellor to come round on the first day but I do have a backup plan if they won't arrange it.

I hope I don't have to keep going to the consultant this time. Last time they referred me because I have an underactive thyroid but it was fine all the way through. I bet I'll still have to go for extra blood tests though.

tokentotty · 09/01/2007 14:56

Oooh that sounds very disconcerting about the unhelpful midwife. Still, this time around I'm sure you'll be much more confident and able to kinda stamp your feet a bit more to be heard and get what you want. I'm thinking of using a private midwife to be honest so I can hopefully have the comfort of continuous care all through to postnatal and someone who'll help and support what I really want (whenever I work out what the hell that might be !!!). Also it means that I'd be able to have all blood tests and stuff like that done at home. The less time I spend in hospitals is definitely better.

So how does the underactive thyroid affect you normally ? Do you have to take medication for it when not pregnant or is it just something that gets monitored ? What is the potential effect in pregnancy ? (sorry about all the questions !!)

GillL · 09/01/2007 16:48

I have to take medication every day even when not pregnant but the pregnancy can cause the thyroid levels to change which is why they have to monitor it. If the levels change then it could affect the size of the baby i.e. it could be bigger than normal. Luckily it was fine last time and I delivered a 6lb 9oz baby.

BabyMadwithBump · 09/01/2007 18:05

Evening Ladies
10 weeks PG, Still got really bad MS and doctor said I have "Hyperemesis gravidarum" (boobs are still killing too along with feeling so drained as well) My doctor sent me for a blood test for over-active thyroid (?), as its one of the top reasons for "Hyperemesis gravidarum" along with multiple pregnancy which i'm keeping my fingers crossed that there is just the one in there, I've losted 8 lb's in 4 weeks but I seem to have what DH is calling a bump, got a scan on monday so I will know weather there is one or more!

boobooma · 09/01/2007 19:31

Hello Tokentotty, welcome.

GillL I've got my booking appointment with mw on the 19th as well, again same mw as last time I think who is great.

Hiding your bump til 28 weeks, well I think she stopped going out, laid low and some clever use of layering and big cardigans. She's only 18 too & she's one of these young sylphs who don't show until 6 months.

boobooma · 09/01/2007 19:34

GillL you can contact the NCT breastfeeding counsellor in your area yourself, don't need to go via the mw and you don't have to be a member of NCT either. And you can do this before you have the baby so you already know her.

Catalepticdru · 09/01/2007 20:10

Hello ladies, hope everyone is okay.
BMWB poor you! Hope you get over your extreme MS {hugs}
Welcome Tokentotty... congratulations, you must feel on top of the world.
I'm okay, was very tired this morning, mainly because bad night sleep - howling gales kept me awake!
Yep know all about sore boobs, really painful at times. I was in a 2 hour meeting with 5 blokes, and I was struggling not to rub them cuase they ached so much
Non wired bras are feeling comfy though.

PurpleRabbit · 09/01/2007 20:44

Hi everyone and congratulations to all the new people - haven't had a chance to post since Christmas! Have finally got a GP appointment for Thursday, and if it's like the last time he'll get my scan appointment booked. Very excited to be finally going part-time at work this week (seven months after first asking) . The only thing is, now they've finally arranged for that how I am going to tell them I'm pregnant????? Still feeling nauseous almost all the time, and the worst thing is I can't face chocolate at all .

pinkranger · 10/01/2007 09:24

hi everyone - how are we all feeling ,
well jem i can relate, 8 weeks today and have felt really well up until yesterday and it hit , felt sooo sick most of the day yesterday, came and went but was nearly sick last night when i went to bed and really tierd, sicky feeling is just starting to kick in today. Feel really sorry for all the ladies how have had this from earlier!!

tokentotty · 10/01/2007 10:28

Good morning,

Thanks Catalepticdru, DH and I are smiling even more after Peanut's first photo last night ! Scan went well and even I (with my supremely untrained eye) could make out the basic shape of what was what.

I made the fatal error of leaving a pregnancy book around which he picked up and started reading out loud last night in bed. A little information is definitely a big problem in the hands of a DH who has a fondness for the idea of smothering in cotton wool. This could get slightly frustrating !!!

bresha · 10/01/2007 10:49

Hello every one
Hope you are all having a good week and not feeling 2 sick
Have been feeling really sick 2day, and spotty, but not as bad as I have been feeling so im hoping I am coming to the end of it, im 10 wks now
I ordered 3 bras from figleaves and they arrived 2day
don?t do much for my shape but they are really comfy
My scan appointment came through, it?s on the 23rd, really looking forward to it
Babymadwithbump whts Hyperemesis gravidarum?
Welcome tokentotty
Its sad to hear about unsporting MWs, after all it is there job and they should be there for you, this is my 3rd so I know my mw quite well by now but I never got any support trying to BF, iv never heard of a bf councilor let alone offered one, don?t think they have them here, going to look in to it, maybe try the NCT, I was really upset I couldn?t bf for longer, 2 weeks was all I managed, didn?t help that dp didn?t get paternity leave, but I have demanded he has 2 weeks this time.

Hersetta · 10/01/2007 11:25

Jem1969,

just have all the info through from the Fetal medicine centre and it appears you get all the results on the day of your scan.

You have to arrive 30 mins before your scan time so they can do the blood tests in time so you can have all the results together at your consultation. Sounds good to me.

GillL · 10/01/2007 11:38

Hi everyone. I'm still feeling sick all the time but coping. I have a bag full of food though that I am likely to be able to stomach. I've really gone off sandwiches and bring pasta in to work with me every day now. I'm lucky I haven't actually been sick though.

Boobooma - do you need to be a member of the NCT to use their services?

Bresha - I only managed 10 days and I really beat myself up about it at the time. This time I'm going to try my best and get all the help I can. If it still doesn't work out I'll be much easier on myself. I know that I would have given the baby a good start and dd is fine having been brought up mainly on formula. I was given these links recently. You might find a group local to you.
