Due in September 2007 - anyone else out there? What happens next?

OK, so I have the positive pregnancy testS! - we have told one person, are agonising about who else to tell when, we have bought two books on pregnancy.

But what happens next? Do I just phone the doctor tommorow to make an appointment, should I wait a couple of weeks? Then what happens?

Total newbie to this, no idea what I am doing at all!

Nettee, Missmapp and Flossam, thanks for all the help, and anyone else I missed.

Yesterday I went the whole day without being sick but then worried I had miscarried!!!

Anyway, vomitting back this morning, it was awful but I know there are tons of people worse off. Don't think I am dehydrated Nettee although will keep an eye on it.

How is everyone else? I have midwife booking app this Wed xx

sophus · 05/02/2007 18:42

hi all
i managed a full day in the office, wasn't sick, actually made a positive contribution and although still feel sick as a dog feel as if i'm coping with it all a bit better. Unfortunately partner cooked mackeral last night which was yummy but whole house stank of fish so used mega powerful air freshener and now house stinks of mackeral with air freshener overtones. Yuck yuck yuck. A big hang on in there to all the other m/s sufferers out there.
p.s. (TMI warning) - anyone else having very "lurid" dreams yet?

canadianmum · 05/02/2007 19:06

sophus, yes to the dream question, had very "interesting" dream about Colin Firth the other night, he was dressed as Mr Darcy and it really was a shame to wake up

latest unpleasant pregnancy symptom - spots on my back, have scrubbed and scrubbed to no avail, must be hormones???? Didn't have this last time

Edie - good luck on wed and hope the ms gets better soon.

HammerHeadShark · 06/02/2007 08:38

Ooohh Colin Firth as Mr Darcy - was he emerging from the lake like the winner of a wet t-shirt competition? How delicious!

Canadianmum - I have loads of horrible spots on my back too - not very fetching - might go swimming today to see if the chlorine zaps them. (Fellow twin mum wave by the way!)

Sorry to all of you that have m/s - feel a bit guilty that I am not suffering really apart from being v.weary and occasional evening queasiness.

Anyone else do alot of gym/exercise stuff and have you cut down/modified it at all? I lost alot of weight last year and got quite fit and am keen not to use pregnancy as an excuse to put it all on again. As I feel fine I am still going to the gym 3-4 times a week and continuing with treadmill/cardio as long as I feel ok and not too hot and bothered.

Whispers

Nettee · 06/02/2007 10:35

GP prescribed me some metoclopramide this morning - could have kissed him. He encouraged me to use it sparingly though so I haven't tried it yet. Will have a go with it this afternoon and see if it improves my evening.

Trying to motivate myself to do anything useful at home is just so difficult at the moment - so much house work and paper work to get through.

Glad to hear lots of you are feeling better

Sophus - it is definately the smells that do for me - fish and air fresherner - yuck.

Edie - hope you enjoy your booking tomorrow and get on well with the midwife.

TeeCee · 06/02/2007 14:46

ohh Flossam, is the raunchy dream a good sign? I had the most amazing dream invoving my DP last night and was most upset to be woken up by DD2 crying!

TinaLC · 06/02/2007 16:46

Hello everyone

Had a bit of a tough weekend with a sharp pain in my lower right hand side all weekend that required a hot water bottle and lots of lying down. Was so sure this was a very bad sign and so bit depressed but do feel much better today (thankfully as work know nothing at the moment). Anyone else had this? Tried to go to the pub with DH as he is being so nice and I know he really wanted one pint but ended up leaving him there finishing his pint while I went home doubled over.

Hammerhead, I am also still going to the gym (always been a 3 times a week person). My closest friend who is a personal trainer says just to use 2 simple criteria - don't get too hot(you know that feeling when you come off the treadmill with a glowing face - try and stay cool and elegant - her words not mine!) and try and keep your heart rate under 150. I used to run at 11km/hr and now run a bit longer at 9.5km/hr. Don't know if that helps.

I am quite envying those dreams people keep talking about - I am a couple of weeks behind most of you at the end of Sept so have that to look forward to

laksa · 06/02/2007 16:57

TinaLC, I am not due till 26th Sept so we can hang around waiting together

I am feeling a bit crappy today, can't seem to concentrate on revision and can't keep any food down either, but I know it could be worse as at least I'm not throwing up all the time.

Am also feeling a bit down today. I asked the GP if I could have a home birth and she said it was difficult(tried to talk me out of it) and that I'd have to ask the midwife at my booking in appointment. What if I can't have it with this Practice, will I have to register at yet another, am getting a bit annoyed, is anyone else considering a homebirth?

xx

TeeCee · 06/02/2007 17:09

I'm planning another homebirth but not seen anyone about it yet. Waiting to hear back from the hospital I want to be under if they'll take me. I'm totally out of their area but don't want to go to my local hospital. Once they say yes I'll try and get the same 1-2-1 midwife I had last time as she happens to live round the corner from me and she was very supportive.

missmapp · 06/02/2007 17:42

Hi all,
Had my booking in appt today - all went well, but too early to listen to the baby She says a scan date should come through for 12 weeks and apart from a few blood tests, i dont see her again until 16 weeks. Hope to hear about the scan soon - hope its on a day im not working, its such a pain to get time off.

My ds had a lousy cold all weekend, but is on the mend now.

Sorry to all those feeling sick, hope it eases soon.

Have a gd week. Best go my ds is pushing me off the seat to play trains with him!!

Nettee · 06/02/2007 18:22

Laksa - don't worry about the GP they have all sorts of views on home birth and have very little to do with the decision. discuss with the midwife at your booking. She should be supportive. It is a bit difficult if she is not keen - might put it down to staffing - but she does have a duty to support your decision.

Good luck

Have my booking in appt tomorrow and am a little nervous (don't know why as I've done it before). Sickness is starting to pass as am nearly 11 weeks now. Was so bad at one stage GP had to put me on Metoclopramide tablets to stop throwing up (sorry if TMI, but Nettee, they really do work and you'll be able to eat again ) Didn't help though when DP wanted to cook bacon sandwiches - had to go into the bedroom and close the door and open all the windows which was bloody horrible! Now I'm not feeling too bad I'm worried - can't win! Scan not until 22nd Feb so am counting the days. With DD had a dating scan at 7 weeks so am getting very impatient!! Already have a craving for sweet red apples x

Nettee · 07/02/2007 08:32

trinity - great to hear the metoclopramide works. It seemed to help a bit last night but maybe not as much as I had hoped. Took one this morning and managed to empty and fill the diswasher without throwing up so I think it must be doing some good. Good luck to everyone with booking appointments coming up. Mine is next Tuesday. Only thing about having them early is that you can't hear the baby's heart. I used to love doing bookings (as a student midwife - work in the hospital now) and listening to the heart for the first time was a highlight. Have to wait till 16 weeks now I think, but at least the 12 week scan is offered more widely.

laksa · 07/02/2007 09:23

thanks nettee, will wait and see how the midwives are. Sounds like you have an ideal situation Teecee, am crossing my fingers that I get someone as nice.

This morning I found something that I could keep down...frozen berries and banana smoothie, it makes a change from jaffa cakes

I've been offered the nuchal scan, does anyone know if this replaces the dating scan, and at what time you get it, my doctor seemed in kind of a hurry so didn't get a chance to ask Is anyone else having the nuchal one??

Hope everyone is feeling better soon, that metoclopramide sounds like a godsend!

xx

Nettee · 07/02/2007 09:46

The nuchal scan is done between around 11- 14 weeks (might not be the exact range can't quite remember) but usually at 12 weeks and they do date the pregnancy at the same time so wouldn't need a seperate dating scan. It gives you a risk result for your baby having a chromosomal abnormality eg Downs syndrome. If the risk is higher than 1:250 they recommend an amnio which is an invasive test that gives you a definate result but has a 1-2% chance of causing a miscarriage.

Before agreeing to the nuchal scan you should think what you would do if you got a high risk result, because if you wouldn't have the amnio then there is no point really in having the nuchal scan as it might just cause you to worry.

Personally I am going to have the nuchal scan because it is quite a good screening test as these go and would have the amnio if necessary - I think. Would like to know in advance and especially if baby had a problem that was incompatable with life. Problem would come if the baby did have Downs syndrome as I think I would have a major disagreement with my DH which wouldn't really be resolvable.

It is really horrible to have to think about all this when we are all newly excited about our lovely babies coming along.

TeeCee · 07/02/2007 10:02

Nettee - my eldest DD has Down's syndromw so if you, or anyone else, ever wants to talk to me about anything to do with DS then I'm more than happy to discuss.

Laksa - that situation would be ideal but it's by no means set up yet. First the hospital have to agree to take me, then I have to hope that midwife is still there and if she is that she'll take me on and as I'm out of the area for this hospital then I can't have an official home birth. For me to have an official home birth I'd have to be under Northwick park Hospital who are SHIT and that's not happening, I'll refuse to go there.

Fio - today I'm less nervous as I threw up this morning. Hurray for morning sickness!

Hope everyone else is feeling OK

sophus · 07/02/2007 11:40

Feel human for the first days in weeks - not too worried (or so i'm telling myself) as i am still getting waves of yuck but it doesn't seem to be so all consuming and i just feel as if i have a bit of my brain back. Am finding that the evenings are the worst part of the day - by the time supper comes along my insides have virtually eaten themselves. Am 10 weeks today so am trying to tell myself that it is normal for it to fading away a bit by now.
I am having a nuchal scan (due to my ridiculously advanced years) and yes it does replace a dating scan. I think whatever level of tests or info you are subjected to you are always going to be worried especially if you are a bit older so you might as well have the tests which give you as much info as possible.
And anyway i've heard you get a good picture with a nuchal scan.
My friend had a baby with DS last year and had no warning. I think she would have had an easier time of the first few months if she had at least known and so could have prepared herself.

bendybus · 07/02/2007 12:04

Hello all
Feel so sorry for all you with the sickies. I'm nearly 11 weeks and haven't been sick but have a constant queasy feeling which is quite overwhelming at times. Also knackered and dizzy (several times have lost footing on stairways).

Is anyone else working and not told colleagues? Keep wondering if I should tell them but I really wanted to wait for the scan first.

spraklynewthing · 07/02/2007 12:19

BendyBus - I am at exactly the same stage as you. The dizziness and tiredness are definitely the main problems at the moment (although my total aversion to ALL vegtables bar mash potatoes is also a bit a pain)

I have only told selected work friends rather than everyone - mainly as I know everyone will be talking to my belly until September! Not much to talk to yet except a layer of lard!

Quite miserable as haven't heard anything from midwive yet. Called GP surgery and said they will contact me anytime for now until 14 weeks?! I WANT A 12 WEEK SCAN!

Sorry for shouting must remain patience and grown up!

bendybus · 07/02/2007 12:38

Oh sparkly - I know how you feel. The scan is the main thing on my mind at the moment so it must be frustrating not to have a date.

Could the GP give you the direct number for the hospital? That way you could at least check they know about you.

I've only been managing a few grapes and some milk - but Mmmmmm actually mashed potatoes sound possible...

Don't feel safe telling anyone at work, the place lives on rumour and goss. I want to enjoy my announcement rather than come in one day and find everyone taking a sudden interest in my wellbeing...

TeeCee · 07/02/2007 13:19

I don't mind feeling sick really, it means it's all still ok, a good sign. It's not nice but I can't complain about feeling sick. As soon as I don't feel sick I worry!
So has everyone, even the late Septembers, heard from the hospital and booked in for a scan? I'm due 23rd but so far other than lettign the GP know that's been it.

I've told the girl I work with but noone else. Thought as I kept rushing out to be sick I should let her know what was happening!

spraklynewthing · 07/02/2007 14:22

Bendy - Yeah maybe I should contact the hospital direct...hmmm it's really hard as I hate 'making a fuss' but on the other hand even if I knew it was in a couple of weeks at least it's something to work towards, isn't it?

Only grapes and milk - you poor thing! I definitely think you should try mashed potato it's wonderful, although my DH has a habit of hiding peas in it as he is so worried about my veg free diet. Doesn't fool me though

TeeCee - totally know what you mean about symtoms coming and going. You can't win! Can't wait for the sickness to stop, then worry that it has!

What are we like?!
