Hi new year, new thread!

OP posts:

Snugglebunny - if you are worried about having to buy more nappies as LO grows go for the one size type - We used Popolinos (Like Motherease but 100% cotton) - which can expand as baby grows - They will dry overnight in an airing cupboard. You will have to buy different sizes of wrap but you only need 3 or 4 of each, and each size lasts a good six months. You also won't have to buy any more if you have a 2nd baby or you can sell them on ebay and get some of your money back. sorry end of green rant

But seriously - Try a range of different makes to see which you like best - you don't need to commit loads of money to one make until you have road tested a few and you can always mix them with disposable until you have made up your mind ...

MoosMa · 15/01/2007 18:10

I'll just add that I use the Tots Fluffles with Motherease airflow wraps. Poppers work really well on wriggly bottoms!

andyrobo237 · 15/01/2007 19:38

Just back from the hospital - been for a growth scan - and it is definately confirmed that it is a baby elephant I am carrying!

Current estimate at 34+ weeks is 6lb and 9 oz!!!!! I know they are not too reliable, but it was pretty spot on with my dd last time - and this one is still a boy!

Seeing consultant on Thursday - hope he will book me in for c-section at 38 - 39 weeks - else I will have to get stroppy!!

penguinette · 15/01/2007 20:10

Thanks babydrivertoo, that?s really helpful re homeopathy. i heard from a friend that the remedies also really help in recovery.
Thanks everyone for their experience on real nappies - it is really difficult to choose and you get the feeling this is a 'life commitment' that you can't change later....
Just started week 36, so four weeks to go! Struggling to furnish our tiny one bedroom flat with everything for the baby without a car! Quite a challenge...
Looking forward to the coming weekend for an intensive antenatal weekend-course at the 'active birth centre'. Anyone done any courses by them? they sound really good, but would love to hear from experience...
ok off to make dinner - so hungry i am starting to wonder what the keyboard tastes like...

SmudgeMum · 15/01/2007 20:55

Evening. Hope everyone is well and not being kicked, punched, wriggled or squirmed too much. My LO still seems to have room to pack a pretty punch. Saw MW today and she reckons it's going to be a 7lb something baby (sounds great to me!) and all on track. I've still got just less than 3 weeks though so not sure what I'm going to do with myself. Almost (but not quite) feel envious of those of you still at work!! I know there are plenty of things that I could do but none that I want to do. There are still a few boxes lurking in corners waiting to be unpacked, letters to write, finances to sort out etc etc I'm still trying to get out every day but feeling very accident prone. i managed to fall up the last few steps going over a flyover yesterday and got a real playground grazed knee. It's a good job it was going up and not down as the steps are really steep!!
Anyone got any exciting news?

Sallyallyally · 15/01/2007 21:29

No exciting news. DH is managing to take being unpleasant to new levels. Has been fine most of pregnancy and now when I really need some support has turned into fully fledged cabbage . Anyone know a joke to cheer me up?

Bienchen · 15/01/2007 21:42

Sallyallyally - could be me. I think DP is ignoring anything to do with childbirth and is happy to leave all the arrangements to me as I have done it before. Best comment was about half an hour ago when I had a cry about all the stuff that has not been tackled including perinneal massage and he asked whether I can't do it whilst I'm studying. Not sure whether this will cheer you up - I'm half way between laughing and crying. Beginning to think I was better off being a single mum to DS (12)... sorry - rant over

SmudgeMum · 15/01/2007 21:53

I nearly asked if anyone knew any jokes but then thought it might be asking for trouble. This is my one and only joke. Are you ready for it?

What do you call a donkey with 3 legs?

A wonkey.

Sorry, very lame I know but I always think that if I can only remember one joke, at least it's clean! My DH is being lovely at the moment - he's gone out tonight to have a boys night playing computer games. Bienchen, I dread to think how you answered DP about studying whilst doing perinneal massage. Perhaps you could stick a duster up your bum and clean the house at the same time?

leahsmum · 15/01/2007 22:07

Hi folks - you might have to bear with me i've only just discovered mumsnet.
I'm due my second little darling in Feb 07 and have only just managed to persuade dp to dig out my pram/crib etc (apparently it was too early before). Only prob is that i've heard different opinions on reusing mattresses for cribs and prams. Does anyone have any advice here? My original mattress for each of the afore mentioned were used once with my dd who is almost 3 now.
Any advice greatly appreciated. Also any advice on the heartburn - gaviscon just doesnt seem to do the trick anymore!!

suzi2 · 15/01/2007 22:09

My DH is seriously disinterested at times too. Mind you, I've had a few breathtaking BHs lately and that always makes him jump a bit!

Oh... and nearly passing out while, erm, getting frisky with each other. That was a passion killer!

Sallyallyally · 15/01/2007 22:12

Thanks guys. He's just been shouting at me because I haven't typed out some invoices today and apparently I am really horrid at the moment. Wonky joke made me smile though. I used to be a bit of a tiger (growlll), but when your daughter is upstairs sleeping and your bump is braxton hicksing (made up word?!) its a bit hard to tell someone where to shove the invoices even though I'm sure thats the correct response . Managed instead to sob pathetically. Do you think an extra strong cocoa will have the same impact as a G & T?

marmitemad · 15/01/2007 22:23

Hi everyone,
have been feeling very, very sad since sat evening when SIL texted to say she has had a missed miscarriage at 11 weeks. we are very close but I just don't know what to say/do and was very conscious of the huge belly getting in the way of proper hugs yesterday. she seems to be dealing with it better than me in fact although I wonder whether she is holding in her feelings at the mo.
also found out tonight that she has to wait until Friday for the surgery which I think is horrible.
can't focus on any of the things I still need to plan/do/buy/pack.
not looking forward to finishing work on Friday either so more jokes would be good to cheer me up too.

suzi2 · 15/01/2007 22:27

Sorry to hear about your SIL marmite. I had an early mc before DS and it really threw me - especially once I was pg again. I found the ladies on babyloss.com forums great help. Also, tell her not to get her hopes up, but to ask for a repeat scan before the D&C... my friend was told her baby was lost but it was a mistake. A really long shot... but best to be sure.

Tommy · 15/01/2007 22:49

that's sad marmite - and hard for you as well

leahsmum - have posted on your other thread about the mattress! welcome

I have finally got around to finding the first size vests and babygros (sent DH up to the loft today) and they are currently in the tumble dyer. Got a weird shock yesterday when I dreamed I was in labour. It was so realistic that every time I woke up I though I was in labour - didn't help that I had tummy pains cos of constipation (sorry if TMI!) and all I could think of was that I would be rushed to hospital with no vests or babygros!

Still very achey here - the tops of my legs are really painful and the baby's movemnets are really giving me loads of gyp at the moment. So, while it's clearly obvious I going to have a baby in a few weeks time, I still can't quite believe it.....

peachygirl · 16/01/2007 10:14

HI I'm out of class today so may be around. I thought I'd give myself a MN treat as I finished each job on my list. Sorry to hear your news Marmite. and sorry that DH/DPs aren't behvaing. Mine has been OK but I know what you mean about him allowing us to make all the arrangements. when I have said to him about stuff he's been a bit 'yeah yeah' about it all.
I 'm also handling calls to the estate agents regarding our sale as DH is in departmental meetings all day long.. Ho hum

snugglebunny · 16/01/2007 11:31

Marmitemad - sorry to hear your sad news. I can relate to how you are feeling - best bud lost baby at full term just after Christmas. He was doing fine until she went into labour and in a freak "accident" squashed his umbilical cord which stopped his oxygen. She's really struggling and I feel so guilty with my bump and excitement at LO arriving in 4 weeks. Very difficult.

Thanks for the advice on real nappies everyone! Am quite keen to be a bit greener so will certainly be investing in a few - didnt realise you could get one size that is adjustable - will keep my eyes peeled!

Tommy · 16/01/2007 13:16

think it's sciatica

I was walking through a car park today when suddenly I got a huge shooting pain down my leg and I squeezed poor DS2's hand really hard (like you would to DH in labour!) - strangely enough the poor child didn't really like it! So I suppose I'vve got that for the next 5 weeks or so as well - grumble grumble

ruthie21 · 16/01/2007 16:26

hello ladies

you probally won't remember me i have posted a few times though often seeking advice!! find it quite hard to keep up with the thread you are a chatty bunch .
sticking to my habit is anyone's lo lying back to back? mw advised getting on all fours with bum in the air and wriggling hips not sure if possible and was wondering a)if any one has advice on turning baby round and b) how will i know if she has turned?
also bit unsure as to when to stop trying to turn her in case i turn her right back around again iyswim

advice would be really appreciated

SmudgeMum · 16/01/2007 16:44

HI Ruthie,

I think there were some threads about good ways to get your baby to turn - I'm sure someone clever will be able to link for you. I think the basic principle is that you have to think of your baby like a hammock and that the heaviest bit is its back. You need that to swing round to the front so need to be in positions that make it swing round. Realise now this might confuse you even more but things like being on all fours, sitting up straight rather than slouching, lying on your side might help the baby to swing round. It isn't a case that you'll make it go all the way round though I don't think

MoosMa · 16/01/2007 17:32

Ruthie mine is OP too (as was DD1) and I have a thread here with lots of useful advice. It takes a lot of effort to turn the LO but having had one stay OP all through labour I'd say it's worth the extra effort now! ALso if you Google Optimum Feotal Positioning you'll get hundreds of sites all about it so take your pick! If you've got one, exercise balls (aka birth balls) are very nice to lean forward on while watching telly

ruthie21 · 16/01/2007 17:48

thanks smudgemum and moosma
will check out the thread!

sorkycake · 16/01/2007 18:30

Ok girls I haven't had internet for nearly a month!!!! So settle down I'm simultaneously going through the entire thread and commenting as I go so the first stuff will be old, and this is going to be long!!

First things first Glad to hear you all had a lovely Christmas and Happy New Year to you all!!

Peachy mine is a boy and will be called Luca. Love the name Nova Peach ? btw, how absolutely fabulous!
Do wash all your new baby things before putting them on them, try Ecover, no nasties in it.
Pool is arriving tomorrow and is from Aquabirth. Cost 340 to hire and dhl here and back. It's heated and filtered and solid sided too. I used the same company last time and the pool was fabulous quality. If you do go for an unheated pool anyone, please bear in mind that the m/w will have to keep checking the temperature regularly and then top up accordingly. The convenience of setting the desired temp and not bothering me with buckets etc is absolutely worth the extra money and has pleased the m/w no end!

Ooh congratulations Plumpbump, well done!

I'm onto no.3, will use washable breast pads, disposable ones are awful and ditto to the paper pants. I've bought cheap ones from Asda in my normal size and will use them afterwards as period knickers, if they're still worth wearing.
I'm wearing nursing bra's instead of maternity ones and have packed mt bag. Dh still has many jobs to do around the house and I'm 37 weeks today, Eek!
I have a 4.5yo and a 3yo both of whom I'm now home educating so I'm pretty tired now too. This last week I'm getting a bit knackered going up and down stairs, though strangely enough I can clean for an hour at a time and sand floorboards without a sniff, must be bizarre nesting urges!

M/w has delivered homebirth boxes and confirmed on-call arrangements, so we're all set to go here really as of tomorrow. I've asked for a membrane sweep on 40+1, 3 and 6 if I get that far. I'm due on the 6th but predict it'll arrive on the 8th at a very healthy 8lb 2, after an uncomplicted water birth and a 4 hour labour .
We'll see! I wonder who's next!!

DontCallMeYummy · 16/01/2007 18:40

How to turn a breech baby? It would appear that the answer is a combination of Chinese Moxa sticks, lots of bum-in-the-air exercises, sleeping on your left, shining a torch in the desired direction and lots of stern words to baby and threats of a bag of frozen peas on the belly. Whatever it was, something worked and my midwife confirmed today that he's done a big dive and swum down to the depths, so much that he's almost engaged! Good boy! I rewarded him by including him in my Habitat sale shopping spree and bought him a big blue basket to store all the baby toys he's somehow already amassed. Just wanted to share that, as I've been going crazy of late thinking that an upsidedown baby would put paid to my homebirth plans. Good boy!

Also - Snugglebumnappies, do you stock bamboo nappies? My Mum has gone all eco-tastic and says they sound good. What's the expert's opinion on them?

peachygirl · 16/01/2007 19:40

Hi all
I didn't get on again during the day but I did do all the jobs I needed to do before I leave.. of which I am very proud.
sorky thats a great name Hope you have fun setting up your pool tomorrow. I have washed quite a bit of stuff and have left the rest of the stuff til next week.
Congratulations DCMY on your upside down baby!!
Things with the estate agent went well and DH is to handle the next stage of nagging tomorrow.

thanks for everyone's kind words regarding SIL. I'm feeling a bit more emotionally stable today.
Has anyone else started taking raspberry leaf tablets/drinking the tea? I'm a bit confused about the optimum dose although this could be because I'm taking both at the moment (1 tablet twice a day and 1 cup of tea).
Tea bags are 1g each bag, packet says max 3 per day from 35 weeks. Tablets are 640mg each and say max 2 tablets, 3 times a day.
