Hi new year, new thread!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
MoosMa · 16/01/2007 20:49

Haven't heard from Soundbites for a while - are you still with us or have you popped???

penguinette · 16/01/2007 22:13

hi Everyone,
sorry to hear about your SIL Marmitemad.
DCMY, glad to hear your LO has made up his mind and decided to head the right direction (quite literally...)
Mamitemad, i have been taking Rasberry leaf tea from week 32. i was told to take one cup a day of tea (i have the loose leaf version, so 1 teaspoon per day) untill week 36, and then take 3 cups per day.
going to see the doctor tomorrow. last time he said baby is OP, so i hope he changed and if not - all those useful tips will come in handy!
having my baby shower tomorrow! realy excited so nice of my friend to organise this - great 'excuse' to have a girly eve without DHs and DPs...
ok have a good night everyone - dont let LOs kick and bash too much!

suzi2 · 16/01/2007 22:36

I was going to ask about the raspberry leaf thing... I took the tablets with DS but can't for the life of me remember when I started or how many! I think I started at 37wks once i was considered full term incase I jinxed everything. I did suffer from awful BHs those last few weeks so wonder if it had anything to do with it? But then DS arrived on his due date and if they had anything to do with that I'm truly grateful!

Bienchen · 17/01/2007 10:39

Marmitemad - sorry to hear about your SIL's news. Hope you are both coping well.

Went to see the m/w yesterday to have blood checked (low iron) and he could not find the baby's head. We know it's got one but LO has decided to be breech now after being in perfect position for the last six weeks or so. I'll try to sit on birthing ball and will try being on all fours later to get it to move back.

Gave college a miss this morning but might go in for pm sessions. I've just felt so miserable the last few days and then fed up with myself for being miserable

On a happier note - have managed to buy some more reusable nappies on ebay for a reasonable price but have so far not bought any wraps.

MoosMa · 17/01/2007 11:01

Bienchen and others buying nappies and wraps, beware of 2nd hand wraps, I bought a load of Bambino Mio wraps from ebay and they were all perished and unusable. It seems they degrade while not being used so may have been fine when last used but have perished while being stored.

Tommy · 17/01/2007 11:04

good point moosma - I have nappies and wraps in the loft - I'd better get them down to check the wraps are still in one piece!

Good news chez Tommy today - DH has found a job
It starts on 5th Feb so he might well have to have some time off pretty quickly but it's all a bit relief

suis · 17/01/2007 11:22

That's excellent news Tommy, it must be a great weight off your shoulders.

Conversly, my DP was talking last night about cutting back his job, which is good news too. He has a lovely job which he enjoys, but it's pretty low paid and by the time he travels to work he makes less than childcare will cost. So he's suggesting working fewer days to stay home with the LO and eventually getting something better paid anyway. Which is great !

On the Raspberry leaf thing... I've been on 1 cup a day of the leaf tea for a couple of weeks, and the herbalist said to move it up to 2 cups a day now I am 36 weeks, and up to 3 after 38. I suppose it's like any of these things, no hard and fast rules other than don't go mad with it.

titchy77 · 17/01/2007 12:00

Has anyone found they are really hungry, i cannot stop eating i'm wanting food all the time!! can i ask is the rasberry leaf tea thing any good and am i right in thinking it helps to soften the cervix? sorry bit unsure. off to see mw this afternoon.

soundbites · 17/01/2007 12:41

Hello Moosma

Thanks for noticing my absence. I finally finished work on Friday and am finding it less easy to post when I have to turn on the computer etc. than when I was just sitting in front of it all day for work.

Still here and intact; will be 38 weeks tomorrow. Managing to find loads of little jobs to fill the maternity leave so far. Even done about 30-45 mins of yoga every morning (well, all three of them to date!). I have been so sure that baby will arrive before 1 Feb that it is a weird sort of limbo at the moment. I am making plans and going for coffee with the NCT group, lunch with MIL etc. but it is odd planning and then thinking that I might just not be able to fulfil the plan ? Just watch it arrive two weeks late now! We had our last NCT class last week and we were shocked when the seventh couple didn?t turn up because their baby was born on Tuesday 9th! And she was due on 2 Feb, the day after me.

Sorry about your SIL, Marmite.

Glad to hear about DH's job, Tommy - what a relief.

On the nappy question I have bought Tots Bots nappies (6 original and 6 fluffles ? all nippas) off another mumsnetter ? go on the nappies and potty training threads and there is loads of advice on which sort. Also got a fabulous starter pack for free from the council (West Sussex) with 10 motherease. So hoping to do the 'green' thing!

Take care all of you
xxx

CurrantBun · 17/01/2007 12:50

Hi everyone, haven't been able to post for a few days due to work being absolutely manic, so hope all are well and please don't be offended if I don't have time to read back and comment.

I think work have finally realised I'll be starting maternity leave very shortly and are hitting me with loads of things that need to be done 'urgently'. It was completely dead leading up to Christmas and I wish I'd used the time more efficiently now - the wisdom of hindsight is a wonderful thing!

I'm now 34+2 and still feeling really well, although I've been getting up for the loo in the night 2-3 times instead of just once over the past few days. I had a midwife appointment on Friday and everything was fine - baby is definitely head down and is apparently 3/5 engaged. I asked if this meant the baby could arrive early but midwife said not necessarily, although it makes it more likely. She had a good feel - according to her there isn't an ounce of fat on me which made feeling the baby quite easy - and estimated that it would weigh around 6lb 2oz at birth based on its current size. Which is fine, as I'm only little - but I hoped that the baby wouldn't be TOO tiny. The reason I need to pee more often at night is that the baby's head is now quite far down in my pelvis and therefore pressing on my bladder.

Am hoping the baby doesn't arrive early as I'm still supposed to be working until the end of week 37. And I haven't prepared a hospital bag yet either - hopefully I'll get that done this weekend.

Surprisingly at 34 weeks the baby is still hugely active and wriggles around all the time! Fortunately it seems to keep still at night - which is now the time I'm the one wriggling around as I'm finding it quite hard to get comfortable. Just turning over seems to require monumental feats of athleticism, and I tend to wake up really stiff where I've been lying in one position for so long. Oh well - not too long to go now.

SmudgeMum · 17/01/2007 14:10

Afternoon all,

Good to have you back Soundbites. Since I stopped working I've found that I happily sit in front of the computer for hours but can't be bothered to do any of the cleaning - can I have some of your nesting instinct please sorkycake?

Bizarrely I'm having the opposite of you titchy - I've not got much of an appetite at all. I don't think I've finished an evening meal for the last week even though I keep putting less and less on my plate. Quite unlike me!

Good luck turning those breech and OP babies - I have floors to scrub if anyone has run out of dirty floors at their house!

Over the last few weeks I think my sleeping has got better. I'm not waking at all to go to the loo but do have to wake up quite fully to manage to turn over. DH always tries to help and nearly pushes me out of bed!! I know exactly what you mean about waking up stiff though CurrantBun. I have to get up before my shoulders fall off. Soon we'll all be dreaming of having enough time to be aching from being in one position! Are you all having LO in room with you to start with? What are your thoughts on baby monitors? We've been looking on ebay but I'm not sure. I sort of think that it might make me paranoid but equally know that most people swear by them.

Bienchen, don't overdo it and those of you not yet on maternity leave, hope things aren't too hectice.

Tommy and Suis - sounds like things are good with other halves and work. I reckon my DH is going to try and be away as much as poss just so he can get uninterrupted sleep

titchy77 · 17/01/2007 15:39

Back from mw and all is fine babys laying OP thou and is 2/5 engaged so not sure if it can still turn. it explains why i've been getting backache!i'll be trying the different ways to try and make it turn as been reading that it can make for a prolonged labour and want to avoid that!!
I've brought the bt monitors they seem to be quite good when i tried them out. having lo in our room for a while but feel there useful, if lo's having a sleep upstairs and your downstairs.

TuttiFrutti · 17/01/2007 18:33

I was in the supermarket yesterday buying nappies for my ds, and on impulse bought a couple of large packs of newborn nappies as well. This is the start of my hospital bag, which I've only just realised I ought to get ready now!

Because I'm having a c-section, it hadn't occurred to me that the baby might come early. Then a friend of mine who was asking about childcare arrangements - all booked for the 9th Feb - said "And what are your plans if you go into labour early?" Errrr.....

Also stocked up on massive sanitary towels and horrid throwaway granny pants this morning. You can get 7 pairs in cotton for £5 in M&S, so it's almost cheaper than buying paper ones.

time4tea · 17/01/2007 18:38

Hello all, can I join you - rather late in the day, I've been hanging on the Pg after mc thread all this time. Baby due on 19 Feb, I have a DS (nearly 3) already. telly broke this morning (no sound) so it has been a bit fraught - I'm mortified at how dependent I am on it for a bit of down-time....

peachygirl · 17/01/2007 19:15

Hi all, welcome time4tea. You have the same due date as me!
I had my leaving party for the children today which was very sweet.
Two days to go.
We went to look round our hospital midwife led birth centre this evening as I am hoping to go there. It was really lovely lots of pull out bed for partners, birthing pools, beanbags and balls.
I have an appointment there next friday.
I was going to start the raspberry leaf tea next week. What does it taste like? I'm not the best with herbal tea anyway and don't want to waste my money if it is not pleasant tasting, so I was going for the capsules.
taste reviews gratefully recieved.
We have again been on the phone to the estse agents ( DH today) and it turns out our original solicitors had not even opened a file for us. We instructed them to do so well before christmas.. Bit really as it mean we will almost definitely not be moved before the baby comes

leahsmum · 17/01/2007 19:17

Hello there again folks. You might remember me posting on your thread a few days ago. I have just realised that everyone seems to ask to join a thread before just butting in on conversation - how rude am I!!! I just interupted.
Any objections to me joining?
I've only just discovered mumsnet and am currently expecting my second little darling. I am due on 14th february and already have a little girl, she will be 3 in April.
I think she now realises how imminent babys arrival is as she seems to have taken to glueing herself to my side and refusing to do a thing she is asked - poss terrible 2's coming rather late - any advice greatly appreciated.

MoosMa · 17/01/2007 20:19

Hello to the new people, not long now...

I've had the worst day today. I left DD (16mo) with my mum while I went to a physio antenatal thing at the hospital, when I got back I found out she'd fallen down the stairs (the whole flight). Mum called the doctor who was very nice and explained that she may be a bit drowsey and off her food but not to worry too much unless she is sleepy and not rousable. She's been fine all afternoon and the only mark on her is a small carpet burn on her cheek so I am very relieved!

In the afternoon I went to see the mw and found it was yet another different one - I've now seen 5 different people in 6 visits - and she was horrible! I explained my concerns about how little weight I've put on (9lbs) but she just told me to eat more and do less (have I not been trying to do that for the last 8 months??) and told me how lucky I am to be so slim! I told her my worries about being able to feed this one as I struggled last time, but she said that the baby will take all that it needs from me and that it doesn't matter if I have small boobs! I said I realised that but how can it take from me if I've got nothing to give?! I got really cross with her and was almost in tears by the time I left . Also, she didn't test my wee even though I offered to provide a sample as I'd forgotten to bring one, and she didn't mention the blood test I had 2 weeks ago.

The mw I saw 2 weeks ago was very nice and was interested in the idea of a homebirth and seemed to be setting things in motion but this one didn't even mention it. I've left a message for her boss to ring me tomorrow as I think I have some complaining to do. I don't really even care too much which mw I have so long as it's the same one each time.

Rant over and sorry it was such a long one...

snugglebumnappies · 17/01/2007 20:33

Hi everyone, feel like my bum hasn't touched a seat in days, things are a bit manic and even started to panic a bit about bump as it hadn't been moving much....that is untill I go to bed and he goes manic, so I know everything is ok and I really need to slow down!

just trying to catch up with everything:

Penguinette: have read some rave reviews of the epi no in midwifery journals but all the research seems to have been done out of the UK and therefore I have seen no real evidence of them working across the board for all women. That said I do know an Independent Midwife from the south of the UK who reports good results with the women she has cared for who used them.

Babydriver, glad the parcel got to you ok, it's always good to get feedback about products, I was thinking about stocking the Green Baby vests etc as Cut 4 Cloth are more expensive and it does seem to put people off, however if the quality isn't as good then I will stick to what I have.

Moosma, I know it's a bit late but have you tried Yeast Raiders or Acidophillus for thrush, it's a prebiotic in capsual form so doesn't have all the added sugar that a lot of the probiotic drinks have that can cause thrush to thrive.

Titchy, raspberry leaf tea works on the uterus by toning it and probably causing braxton hicks, it will not send you into labour but can make your labour shorter as your contractions are more effective. It has no effect on the cervix.

DCMY, yes I do stock Bamboo nappies, eco wise they are great as bamboo does not need a pesticide to grow and is a very sustainable plant. They are lovely and soft but can take forever to dry if you are hanging them to dry in this weather. If you want any advice just drop me an email via the website. Good to hear baby has turned, I was out yesterday evening for a breech consultation appointment for another Independent midwife who has a client at 36 weeks with a breech presenting baby, showed her how to use the moxa and as my bump is stuck firmly breech at 34+ weeks I am going to give it a go myself this week along with pulsatilla, am I the only one left with a stubborn breech now??!!

It's great to see so many people trying out or already using cloth nappies, Snugglebunny, I agree with what everyone has said, don't be loyal to any one nappy, it's often a combination of a few that will be the best eg a bigger more absorbant one for nights, maybe with a fleece or wool wrap, you may fnd that prefolds and a wrap are great for when you are in the house and prefolds are dirt cheap and maybe an all in one for when you are out so it's quick to change and you have less to take out. See if your council offers any incentives, either a voucher or money back. The 10 Motherease pack sounds like a fantastic deal for a council freebie! If you want some advice again I would be happy to help, just drop me an email and iff there isn't anyone local to do a nappy demo I could try and sort out a demo by post where you could look at a few nappies and then send them back for a refund if they aren't what you want.

suzi2 · 17/01/2007 20:35

Hello to the new people

moosMa - what a fright you must have had. DS (17 months) is getting more and more wild and sometimes tries to nose dive off the top step before I have a chance to grab him. Your mum must have been so worried too. Glad to hear your DD is OK.

As for the mw... definately complain to someone. I recently wrote to the head of midwifery about my planned home waterbirth (kept being told I wasn't 'allowed') and I got a letter back today saying that they should be able to accommodate it no problem. So it seems that it's just the mw's who can't seem to get their story straight! If you're wanting a homebirth, they usually like to get the wheels in motion ordering up gas & air and things at around this stage. So definately check it's all in order.

And regarding your milk... you pretty much have to be starving or malnourished for your baby to not get what it needs from you. So try not to let that worry you. I believe the number 1 reason for women stopping breastfeeding is because they believe they don't have enough, or good enough quality milk. But this is a myth and the reality is that 99% of women are just fine. I've seen you about the feeding forum before I think Definately the best breastfeeding support on the web! So I really hope everyone there can help you if you need it.

MoosMa · 17/01/2007 21:15

Thanks Suzi2, I'm glad I'm not the only one to complain, I do feel like a moany old goat sometimes!

Oh, and to top the day off, I ruined tea and DH scraped the car along the side of the house but he's gone out now to get bacon so we can have bacon sarnies

babydrivertoo · 17/01/2007 21:58

hi folks - so much chat to catch up on again! Welcome to our newcomers.

responding to some of the conversations and queries...

we'll be having bubba in the bedroom with us for around the first six months - we did this with DS in moses basket at first and then in the cot (which was quite a squeeze!). We have a tomy monitor which we still use for DS because we can't hear very well in our house with the doors shut but like the reassurance. I wouldn't go for the supersensitive, lie-on type though unless there's a real need - we spent 2 days in hospital with DS as a newborn with jaundice and they had that kind of monitor and it kept on going off even tho' I was right next to him and he was fine. I think they're hypersensitive and can make you paranoid.

On first children's behaviour, DS is 3 and a bit now and has the odd off day. Stickers are a great motivator for him to be good. I try and make sure every day that we have some close together time, and some time when he plays independently so he gets used to the idea of me not always being at his beck and call.

On bfing and milk supply etc agree that your body is meant to provide whatever's needed however big or small you are. This quarter's Junior Pregnancy & Baby mag (if you can find it - large WH Smiths seem to have it) has a free book on bfing which I found quite a handy reminder (and the main mag gave me some entertainment laughing at the ridiculous prices some people are clearly prepared to pay for baby clothes which will get puked on and worse and only fit for a matter of weeks!).

Finally, on raspberry leaf tea, just don't go overboard - on a first pg at least. If you're already 'pre-programmed' to have a fast labour then you could make it even faster (and hence maybe more painful or less controllable).

I'll shut up now - written far too much already!!

forgottenfreetime · 17/01/2007 22:05

Hi All, just did mammoth post then suddenly lost it. Too much to type all again so sorry if I don't acknowledge whats been going on for everyone please know that I was empathising loads!
Is anyone else having the sensation of lots of pressure against the cervix? I am feeling a bit nervous, very uncomfortable to sit down since feels as though I'm squashed between the chair and little ones head. I went for my growth scan on Monday and they couldn't measure the head since it was so low in my pelvis. This must mean baby has engaged yeah? But this is very early considering its my second pg, thought that didn't happen until shortly before labour? Hoping it doesn't mean baby will come too early. They did get measurement of abdomen and thigh and calculate that growth is on track though, so thats something. Just want to get to 35+1 so I'll have finished work at least.

forgottenfreetime · 17/01/2007 22:07

Thanks Babydriver you've said loads of the things my lost post was saying! FFT

suzi2 · 17/01/2007 22:20

dug out all DSs old clothes and washed them up... was thinking I'd have to use his slightly grubby white (and puke stained lol) bodysuits/sleepsuits as desperate spares... but... have put them in the wash with a lilac machine dye (£6) along with a couple of 'white' baby blankets and some muslins. And they are FAB! Turned out really well and you can't tell that they're 'old'. Certainly cheaper than buying half a dozen new sleepsuits and vests that will only get used a few weeks.

SmudgeMum · 17/01/2007 22:39

suiz that sounds great about your dyeing (clothes just in case someone doesn't read the whole thread!)

Anyone else got to the point of just wanting to lie on the sofa and sleep apart from that's uncomfortable after a bit!

Welcome to the newbies - not long to go for us all. i've been getting really bad braxton hicks today so not sure whether I'll buy some raspberry leaf tea or not.

FFT, hope you're starting to feel more comfortable. Maybe your LO just wants you to know that it's there. Mine is still kicking and jumping around and I'm nearly 38 weeks!
Sleep well
