Hi new year, new thread!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
suzi2 · 11/01/2007 04:07

I'm doing it again tonight ChaCha... but tonight I've decided to come on the computer to pass the time. All the relaxing things in the world haven't helped any other night. I'm quite amazed how I'm managing on 4 hours sleep a night though. Fair enough I'm emotional and drained... but I'm still largely functioning! I've had 90 mins already tonight so that's a headstart/bonus. Going to try turning in again soon. We have 2 spare rooms and the sofas but I still ended up in the car last night pmsl.

can't believe how quite mn is at this time of night. I'm sure it used to be far busier when I'd be typing away feeding DS in the early hours.

suzi2 · 11/01/2007 04:19

ah ha! Isn't the internet great? Just discovered that insomnia is a very common side effect of the steroids I'm on. So tomorrow I'm going to ignore the drs advice of taking the dose split between morning and evening and just go for the morning. Apparently that should help and I'll be all fixed tomorrow babbling away here to noone so think I'll turn in and try my relaxation cd... night all... sleep tight...

ChaCha · 11/01/2007 07:06

LOL Suzi - but why the car? Is it that more comfy? I was given steroids last pregnancy when i was hospitalised with the asthma - is this the same with you?

DH & DS still sleeping comfortably on bed, mum and her DP in spare room, sofa was awful last night and ended up on floor with massive stack of pillows and duvets and must have made loo trips every 3/4 of an hour Grrrrr....

DS has tumbletots at 9 so best try and 'be awake'....

KatPoo · 11/01/2007 08:42

Well my consultant told me as I don't suffer with incontinence after 3rd degree tear there is no need for a c-section. Idiots! Diff places tell you diff things & there is no standard.
I have a scan nxt fri @ 36 weeks to access babies size & only if it is big will they do a c-section. However at 34 wk midwife appt I am only measuring 31cm fundal height so do not think I will get a c-section.
Hope you manage to get all sorted out!!!!
Katpoo xx

andyrobo237 · 11/01/2007 09:22

lulumama - no I am going to Ormskirk! Close!!

Got a mw appt today- being seen every week - alternating between the hosp consultant and the midwife at gp - at the hosp they are only concerned with my insulin and sugar levels and only check my wee and BP. I like the reassurance of the midwife who has a feel of the bump and measures me and has a listen in - probably not worth much in itself but it keeps me going!

Got 8 days left in work now over the next two weeks - can't wait - got a day off today to use up my annual leave and the weather is rubbish! Typical! Wanted to go round the retail park but it is too windy to drive down the motorway so will have to potter around the house!

Still not sleeping well - but quite normal from what I can see!

suzi2 · 11/01/2007 09:33

chacha - haven't been hospitalised... and better not be lol. I used to get doses of oral steroids a few times a year in general, but when I fell pg with DS, my asthma nearly cleared! It was good while I bf him and has been not too bad this prengnacy. So it's been 2 yrs since I've needed any. And I guess being so weak and shaky and breathless has come as a bit of a shock to me this time! I used to cope quite well since I was up every night with it etc... but now I'm a total wuss!

The car... well... I have an awful barking cough and wheeze and regarless of what room I go into I wake DS and DH. So at 3am the only reasonable option seemed to be to sit in the car for a good cough! Got fully dressed and took a duvet out. Lord knows what the neighbours were thinking! Only thing that got me back in was that there was no loo...

So, how come you ended up on the floor Chacha? Not very fair to the preggie lady eh?

suzi2 · 11/01/2007 09:48

I think we should make some predictions now we're all almost there. For me:
Girl - had this confirmed twice so better be right!
8lb 2oz
Born on 17th - 2 days overdue
Labour will be stop/start for ages and then really quick once she gets herself organised.

snugglebumnappies · 11/01/2007 09:53

Peachy, thanks for posting link and thanks to everyone who has been to look, will get DH onto sorting out a voucher code so if anyone wants to order anything they can get a discount!

ChaCha and Suzi2, feel sooooo sorry for you, I love my sleep and have felt sleep deprived since the end of my last preg, DD still doesn't sleep through bit I did quit the cosleeping when I was about 12 weeks pregnant and I have had much better is broken sleep, I really don't know how you re coping on 4 hours a night. Steriods can deffinatly make you a bit "loopy"! just be careful that a double morning does dosen't send you over the edge, you may get shaking hands or palpitations is it is too much for you, might find baby doing a bit of a sprint aswell! Have you tried some aromatherapy to help the insomnia, lavenedr and chamomile would be good, especially if you could get DH to give you a head/shoulder massage alongside it! Not well up on flower remedies but these are often good, rescue remedy may help calm the "on the ceiling" side effects of the steriods.

Moosma, I eould deff pay out for a good childrens wardrobe, chest of drawers that has well thought out storage and looks good, not sure about a cot bed as mine have never been in their cots long DD was in hers 3 weeks, prior to that she slept with us and then we got her nto her own bed at 18 months!

Bubble, I would think about a formal complaint to the HOM about the way the registrar spoke to you, how dare he, I think you might find the consultant a whole different kettle of fish, I often found that registrars had ideas above their stations and still really did not know enough about obs and gyne to make the best decissions. How about asking the surgeon who did the repair to be involved in the discussion, after all he is the one who will end up with another repair on his caseload if the worse does happen and you already know he is supportive of your wishes. Have you told any of the docs that this surgeon recommended a cs for the next birth? If so they really should have written to him to ask his opinion.

Andyrob, don't hospital make you laugh, they find a problem then are so busy concentrating on that that they forget the whole reason you are there in the first place IMO palpation for liqour volume and fetal growth is vital at every check up when a woman has gestational diabetes. It's good that you have your community m/w to rely on for this though.

Bienchen · 11/01/2007 10:21

Hi all. Had college all day yesterday and by the time I get home I just want to crash out....

Exam due 21 Feb, baby due 24 Feb - how is that for timing?

Moosma, I would love handmade furniture and the price is probably pitched ok but we don't have the funds for this. DP is only breadwinner as I was made redundant end Oct.

Has anyone got experience of the risk assesment that mw has to carry out prior to homebirth? I think I'll have mine coming up at the end of the month but nothing def booked yet.

Am beginning to get over the dizzy spells I had every morning for the last 6 weeks or so; I think it was linked to low HG levels. Have with consent by mw made some changes to diet and will go for another blood test next week and things will hopefully improve from 10.4 mg!

Sympathise with all of you who sleep badly. I try to slot in a long walk (well a few miles that is) once or twice a week and find that I more or less sleep through the following night.

Anyone planned to use aromatherapy or homeopath. treatment after delivery to aid quick recover?

snugglebumnappies · 11/01/2007 12:39

Hi Bienchen, rsik assesment for homebirth sounds like another OTT NHS thing, it may have been set by the health and saftey commitie to ensure the m/w's safety but how daft are things getting. TBH I read an article in a proffesional journal that said as a Community Midwife we should make an "informal risk assesment" for every house we entered.....now I don't know about you but if someone had a raving mad dog losse or had lost their pet python then there would be no way I was entering that house anyway.....sarcasm aside it was all to do with tripping on a loose carpet or injuring yourself by performing an abdominal palpation on an unsuitable surface eg a sofa, their words not mine, think it's just to do with the hosp covering their backs.
I am planning to use a bit of aromatherapy and homeopathy in my labour and postnatal period, not that responsive to homeopathy though so will see how that pans out.
Have to say Hb of 10.4 is no real bad thing at this stage, dizzy spell prob more to do with a dip in BP that usually occurs in the third trimester linked to increased progesterone and relaxin levels that cause vasodilation. Try to take things easy, get up as slowly as poss (not easy when you are heaving a bump off the sofa with you!) and if using aromatherapy at this stage avoid any that are antihypertensives. Hope this helps.

snugglebumnappies · 11/01/2007 12:40

Many appologies for the awful spelling in last post, note to self "try to read post before sending"!

CurrantBun · 11/01/2007 13:10

Hi all.

MoosMa, I would obviously love good-quality handmade furniture but I suspect the prices would be too prohibitive. We've actually bought an ordinary wardrobe and chest of drawers for our nursery, rather than specific nursery furniture, as we feel it's a better long-term investment. We'd planned to get a cot bed rather than a cot for the same reason, but ended up getting a cot as it'll fit through the nursery doorway and into our room when we need to use the nursery as a spare bedroom for visitors and fold out the futon.

Andyrobo, I'm nearly 34 weeks as well and bump is also starting to get a bit uncomfortable at times. I thought the baby's wriggling would have slowed down a bit by now but it doesn't seem to have done - it's a really active little thing! A hot bath sounds lovely - I keep meaning to have one but always seem to run out of time in the evening. Seeing midwife tomorrow - hope it's my usual one rather than the disinterested, po-faced one I saw last time.

Suzi, am not going to make any predictions for me as I really have no idea whatsoever! It'll be what it is. I have no clue whether it's a girl or a boy, what size it'll be or how close to my due date it'll arrive. Any 'prediction' would be a total and utter guess.

Must say although I'm not exactly fed up with being pregnant, there are certain things I'm really looking forward to once the baby's born:

  1. Trousers that don't keep slipping down.
  2. Being able to put on a pair of socks or shoes without performing major feats of athleticism.
  3. A glass of chilled white wine.
  4. Peanuts and peanut butter.
  5. Turning over in bed without having to sit up first.
  6. Sleeping on my back if I want to.
  7. Sleeping on my tummy.
  8. Going out running again without discomfort or needing a pee every two seconds.
  9. Wearing heels again.
  10. Reclaiming my pre-pregnancy wardrobe - am so bored of wearing the same few things all the time!
qsack · 11/01/2007 13:41

ok, so now i'm feeling guilty as i often drink white wine and eat peanuts (only crave them in pregnancy, know it's not ideal re allergies etc so i try and minimise the intake!). agree with the trousers that don't fall down, putting on anything below my knees and running. miss it like crazy...

snugglebunny · 11/01/2007 14:19

Hi everyone! Can I join your thread? I am 34+5 and due on the 17th of Feb with our first! Getting really excited and VERY nervous now! Hospital bags half packed - hubby going away for 4 days when I am 37 weeks so will hopefully get them properly packed soon!!

Does anyone know about bottle feeding in the hospital - should I take bottles, formula and steriliser? (Know I wont be able to breastfeed, although I would LOVE to, due to a breast op when much younger)

12yeargap · 11/01/2007 14:36

Moosma, I love the idea of the furniture, I'm sure there will be a market for it, but I'm afraid my baby won't even have a nursery, let alone any furniture to go therein! just an eight quid cot off ebay, in our room to start with, then probably shuffled around a bit from room to room, depending on when the stepkids are here...

Actually, I haven't really thought this through...

Will be OK, though, babies are quite small, aren't they?

SmudgeMum · 11/01/2007 15:03

Hi all and welcome to Snugglebunny. How have things gone for you? Mostly we all seem to be getting more moany and whingey as Feb aproaches(understandable of course) - just wanted to say that in case you think we're all doom and gloom!!

Bienchen good luck with the exam - that's quite an undertaking, hats off to you! It's all I could do to make a cake today as I have some girlies coming round after work. Now the house smells of yummy choc cake but it's making me feel sick

Agree about putting on underwear - I feel so old sitting on the bed and having to contort legs in order to put my socks on. Can't say I'm looking forward to getting back to running - not really my thing - but definitely the wine

Right, I did put this on something I posted yesterday but it never appeared. Apologies if TMI but has anyone else been getting the squits? I have for the past 3 days, don't think I've eaten anything unusual. Read somewhere that your body gets rid of everything ready for labour but I've still got 3 weeks to go? Is it something to worry about or just one of those things?

12 year gap, babies are def very small and don't need their own room. Don't worry about not having a nursery. Our babies clothes are beautifully arranged in cardboard boxes and likely to stay that way until we can find a cheap chest of drawers off ebay!! At the moment we've got the cot that I had when I was a baby but not sure whether I feel it's safe to use. Still, we have a moses basket given to us by SIL so we're alright for the first few months.

Sallyallyally · 11/01/2007 15:16

Suzi2...ok...let me stare into my crystal ball...ahh the mists are clearing....I see a healthy baby boy, born on 24th Jan, 8lb 3oz normal delivery, no pain or stitches....oh...and whats this...many visitors arriving with champagne, roses and the complete Ralph Lauren Romance skin care range...I see a beautiful brunette (me!) looking fresh and rested and the house and business are running smoothly.Mary Poppins is just waiting to help out whenever needed. Hello magazine is phoning to get the first pictures..and what's this? A cheque for £50,000,000 hand delivered by Dawn French (?!!! she makes me laugh) and a tall handsome...oh...it's becoming blurred..the mists have returned. Wow..it's looking good

forgottenfreetime · 11/01/2007 15:42

Hi, Wow what a lot of posts and questions we all have? I think the cot price sounds about right for real wood and quality(is that comparable with the top of M+P range? Also saw an ad for similar type furniture rcently - will try to rememebr where so you can have a look.) Personally we have been bargain basement for babe got most of stuff in NCT sale so not for me but I think that there must be a small market for luxury stuff that would perhaps even allow a more expensive item. I had the runs over Xmas but put it down to viruses and rich food. When I had food poisoning (unlucky eh?) my dr said the main concern is not to get dehydrated. Sooo looking forward to not being pregnant although will probably eat these words after first week! All the same reasons: socks, trousers, sleep, moving.... Snugglebunny hospital used tiny prepacked teats and individual bottles of ready made formula while I was there so don't think you will need anything.

Am also hopeful that baby doesn't need its own room 12yeargap, although thinking this is sticking my head in the sand somewhat. We have plenty of bedrooms (5) but are terrible hoarders so all are full. Our own room and DS1 are on first floor with DHs study and then my study and 'spare room' above. DH and I are agreed that we should be on same floor as childen for safety etc but...DH thinks we should move his study to spare room and put baby in his old study permanently BUT this is not a quick job - would take at least three days and two strong men to cart stuff up and down and then I know that my spare room that is usually respectable for guests is lost forever - DH study is always an utter tip, nothing is ever filed, just lots of piles of paper on the floor etc... He hardly ever works from there because it too distracting to even enter, so the house is full of his work too and I fear that the disincentive of another staircase to climb will mean that even less of his paperwork will get into his study than does at the moment. My preference is for DS and baby to share but DS does sleep through the night and we wouldn't want to disturb him. As for baby sleeping in our room, much as I know it whats recommeded I also know that DH will moan am,noon, and night about snuffly noises keeping him awake and then doing an physical job all day. I thought we could put new baby in dh study in moses basket for sleeps only for first few months and then once sleep settles (hopefully)and cot is required, move it into DSs room. I know we're spoilt for choice and feel stupid that with 5 rooms we're even having a dilemma but reality of life is quite different. Anyone think of a different solution or do you just think I'm nuts?

Chloe55 · 11/01/2007 15:50

Hi, hope you don't mind me dropping in but I have been in the process of writing my ds's first birthday invites today - he will be one on the 12th Feb. I just want to wish all of you the very best and that I hope things run as smoothly as possible for you. Recently I have been remembering exactly how I felt this time last year so you have my sympathies for the back ache, pelvis pains, varicose veins where you least expect them, peeing a hundred times a night, feeling knackered but most importantly feeling anxious. Good luck

suis · 11/01/2007 18:08

Smudge - I've had the runs on and off for the whole pregnancy, and esp over Christmas and New Year. Doesn't seem to be any problem and I think I prefer it to the constipation that others seem to get.

suzi2 - who knows ! opinion is v divided on the boy /girl thing, the old wives tales come out about 50/50. Most seem to think it'll be early though, so I'll go Feb 4th, about 8 10 (feels like about 3 stone already mind you)and long labour. Nothing lke optimism is there ?

MoosMa · 11/01/2007 21:00

suzi2 - my prediction is a girl (confirmed on scans twice!) and 1 week late so she shares my birthday, not huge, maybe 7lb 5oz, long difficult OP labour . Alternatively it could be like the dream I had at about 3 months, which was a quick easy labour, it was a girl and we called her Katy.

SmudgeMum · 11/01/2007 21:39

Thanks Suis, feeling quite crappy overall and totally lost my appetite - not normal for me at all!

My prediction is a boy, no idea when but DH is desperate for it not to be the 1st as that is his 30th Bday. I reckon a nice 8lb with a lovely calm labour. Back in the real world, probably going to come on 16th (ie 2 weeks late), be about 3 stone and 48 hours labour.
Feeling optimistic aren't I?

Lovely messages from the people popping in to say good luck. I reckon this year is going to fly but the next month is going to drag til we all have our LO safely in our arms!

qsack · 11/01/2007 22:29

smudge, i've had runs on and off too. if you're on iron it can either constipate you or go the other way. i find that when i'm really tired i get the runs. don't know about your body clearing itself out in prep for labour, both my experiences of labour have included my system doing a huge clear out as my waters broke.... not dignified i know but hey ho..... apparently it's not uncommon. is that TMI????

ChaCha · 12/01/2007 09:38

Currantbun - Like your list of things to look forward to

Andyrobo - Hope m/w appt went well and hurray to maternity leave almost approaching!

Had a few good hours in bed with DS until he realised i wasn't daddy and wanted to play at 4am. I am not synonymous with 'sleep' only daytime and play at the moment. Managed to wake DH to settle him again and had lovely few hours on sofa...ahhhh! Feel better already, what about everyone else?

Only weeks to go....

suzi2 · 12/01/2007 12:17

I slept last night . Looks like my tablets were keeping me awake. I don't feel much better for it, but I'm sure it'll do me good in the long run.

I'm REALLY looking forward to getting rid of the heartburn. I remember with DS that I was eating my dinner then next night thinking "wait a minute... where's the heartburn gone?" as it vansihed in an instant!
