Hey all, sorry I'm slow to update! Everything went really well and my beautiful baby boy arrived on May 4th at around 8am. He was due on the 6th so I was pleased to be early, even on Star Wars day! Went 8 days over with DD.
I had an induction on Tuesday evening after my waters went on Monday evening. I had been having some erratic contractions so was pretty confident that the pessary would get things going. Sure enough, about 2.5hrs after the pessary I started to have regular contractions. Got by for a while on the antenatal ward using breath, visualisation and tens machine, but the plan was always to have an epidural. The midwives were very good and got me over to the delivery suite once contractions ramped up (although they did rather comically offer me paracetamol first!)
On the delivery suite I was was offered gas and air until they could examine me. I went easy on it this time after totally hammering it for DDs birth and ending up a bit out of it. Part of wanting an epidural was so I could have pain relief but be mentally more present for the birth.
As I was 4cm they agreed there was time for the epidural and produced the anaesthetist.
I had been hoping to sleep after epi went in, but the anaesthetist had left it to the midwife to top up the epidural a couple of times and she didn't actually do it until DH went to get her and remind her. Contractions during that time were still painful, but not so bad I wanted the gas and air. After the top ups I was blissfully unaware of the contractions, but a bit too late to have time to sleep before needing to push.
I was really worried about whether I would be able to push effectively enough to avoid interventions. I did find it really hard, but what helped was using Juju Sundin's 'coffee plunger' visualisation, plus putting my hand down to feel his head as it began to emerge. We were tapering the epidural so I began to get enough feeling to be aware of where his head was. Also, because I wasn't in pain or mentally affected by opiates I was able to have sensible discussions with the midwives about techniques, positions etc, and it was a low dose epidural so I could move around.
It was a wonderful moment as he arrived, I was fully with it, and not distressed, and cried lots of happy tears as DH revealed the gender surprise! With DD I was just too traumatised to have an emotional response.
Needed some stitching as I had a second degree tear on one side and a graze on the other. The lovely student midwife supported my old episiotomy scar during crowning so it didn't rupture.
Although we were both really well afterwards the hospital wanted to do lots of monitoring because the waters had gone early. This was ok for a while but we had to work hard to get my canula removed and to get discharged that evening.
It's been lovely since we got home and we had a good day in the sunshine today with family visitors.
Good luck to everyone, it's very exciting reading about all the possible early signs and looking forward to hearing more baby news
Thinking about you in particular cant as it sounds like things are properly getting going! Hope you are getting on well and good luck!
