my mum couldn't stand gas and air - made her feel sick and drunk. We're really similar so I suspect I probably won't get on with it either. I really, really hate being drunk so if it's any way similar to that I can't see me liking it. Plus I am super prone to being sick so I'm sure that will happen too - anyone of you second or third (or fourth!) time mums thrown up during labour? I'm worried I'll throw up in the taxi on the way to the hospital - I get car sick at the best of times!

welcome Madmamma and bchvrs

Who is due first? I am March 8th.

Gas and air did nothing for me. Was more of a pain when midwife kept telling me to take it.

Maybe I was sick but only right towards the end and I'd had quite a lot of epidural top ups by then and they had worn off. It was only once though. I also had quite bad diarrhoea but that was near the beginning. I was still at home (started as home birth), had got to the bathroom and then had a contraction at the same time. Midwife wanted to come in with the gas and air and I was just screaming 'no'! Out of sheer embarrassment. If it happened this time though I really wouldn't care as much. They see it all the time.

Blimey! A new thread already! Just popping in to mark my place.

I had my 34 week scan yesterday. Fluid still low but slightly up (8cm from 6cm) Baby is estimated to weigh 5lb 5oz already, but he is starting to cross down a centile, which is a little concerning. Doppler showed cord resistance is fine, but twice what it was last week, which didn't seem to worry anyone but me! Sad

Back in a fortnight for another scan and I have my pre-op that week too.

How exciting that we might have some babies by the end of this thread (please let one be mine!)

I had gas and air and it did make me feel a bit sick at one pint but I came off it for a few contractions and was fine after that. I wouldn't compare it to being drunk but it took me totally out of it! I remember it was like I was dreaming. I was walking around a paper factory with my BFF for some reason and when someone snapped me out of it I asked where all the paper had gone before I remembered where I was haha! It was definitely more of a distraction than a pain relief thing for me.

Welcome madmamma and bch.

Maybe I think someone is due on 6th but I can't remember. Gonna check the stats in a bit :) I'm 10th and I think there are a few due same day

MrsBen sounds like we are in similar situations! My eaters were 10cm, cord was fine, baby was 5lb 14oz and he's gone down a centile too so I have to have another scan in 2 weeks to check he's still growing at the same rate. Like you, the only one who seems worries about it is me! I suppose they see a lot worse situations though. Whereas for us this is the be all and end all. When are you due?

TheMshipIsBack · 27/01/2016 09:14

maybe I vomited three times just after arriving at hospital, but not afterwards, and this was while I was being assessed, so well before the gas and air. The gas and air wasn't effective for me. I think it's really individual and possibly there's a genetic component.

Scan appointment is late afternoon today, glad it's so soon. I should hear back from my midwife this morning about the blood test results ... eeek.

maybebabybee · 27/01/2016 09:30

Thanks all, think I may just have to be prepared to vomit Grin. Will probably be the least of my worries at the time!

We start our NCT classes on saturday, I'm a bit worried as most reviews I've seen say you have to do ice breaking exercises which I hate.

Good luck Mship!

ffaux do you have a Tens machine? My friend has given me one and I've heard lots of good stories about them being a good distraction from the contractions. But I'm told it's best in early labour, probably not that helpful in later stages!

marmite I just started writing a birth plan and I hadn't thought to include anything about students ... I think I'll say happy for them to observe but don't want them actually doing procedures!

hayley & maybe I'm due 6th March :) I'm hoping she's a few days early as it's mother's day on the 6th and I don't want to wait a whole year to celebrate it haha I think Me is due before me?

Mship and Beautiful good luck with your scans today Flowers can't remember if *scared had hers today too?

Welcome madmamma and bch Smile

I didn't vomit at all in labour and I'm a really vomity person! I was sure I'd be puking all over. And I loved the gas and air, but I got on it quite late when i was already fairly far along, so it might have been less effective or made me sicker if I'd had it earlier on. The thought of an epidural makes me feel weak, I'd like to avoid again if possible! I'm also aiming for the MLU again so would have to be transferred if I wanted one.

Report
maybebabybee · 27/01/2016 10:40

I also definitely want to avoid an epidural, everyone I know IRL who has had one has had a bad experience so it's really put me off. I'm not talking about an insignificant number either. I know I have to have an open mind though.

Report
MrsBenWyatt · 27/01/2016 10:52

hayleycookie sounds like we are very similar! I am due on 8th but the consultant has discussed delivery any time after 37 weeks, so likely this will be a February baby, which is quite nice as other DC are March and April.

How about you?

Thought I'd be clever and have my pot of wee ready for today's antenatal appointment ( had empty pot in bag as just couldn't do a wee last time ) so had it ready in handbag and it basically leaked all over my lovely suede bag, what an idiotic thing to do .Blush
Re epidurals- had one with dd2, didn't feel it being inserted at all, was in too much pain to care how big the needle was or where it went in.
Good luck to all of you with growth scans !

Hi everyone been so busy reading everyone's comments I've not found time to comment myself so here I go... Just sat on the bus on the way to work from my CBT. We've only got one car at the minute so hubby dropped me off this morning. I'll admit I enjoy a bit of time on the bus! 20 minutes to myself to look at my phone and people watch!

Anyway re pain relief I'm pretty open minded. Don't want an epidural (although ask me that a few hours into labour and I might change my mind Wink). My midwife said to imagine pain relief as a ladder with paracetamol at the bottom and epidural at the top. Once you go straight for the top option you can't try the middle options, but start at the bottom and try everything in between. I quite like that idea.

I'm due 2nd March Grin

Yay me! Despite BMI of 35 going into this pregnancy and sugar in the urine yesterday, I passed the random blood glucose test with flying colours. I would have been fine even if it was a fasting measurement. Clearly no insulin resistance issues here. Now for the growth scan ...

oh no sher! how on earth will you clean it? I don't have any suede items purely as I am clumsy AF and know I would ruin anything suede haha

gem I think what your MW said is prob the best way to go. I know some people plan to have an epidural and totally respect that some people would rather a pain free labour, but there are distinct drawbacks from having it done - basically the increased risk of tearing/episiotomy/ventouse/forceps. But tbh when I had my epidural, I really did need it and have no problem with the fact I had it done - this was despite me begging them not to give it to me (they had to convince me it was in my best interests, and they were right, as I couldn't go on after being up for that long).

me I would deffo say to write in your birth plan that students can observe but not do procedures! I also had a student MW do an internal exam to check how far along I was, and it wasn't hugely comfortable. She also couldn't tell what position DD was in and I think this contributed to me not being diagnosed as having back to back baby until I was transferred to the delivery suite. So all in all, my experience with medical students has not been great! I am more than happy outside of labour situation to let medical students do stuff, and have consented to injections and other checks, but when you're in labour and in that much pain, it just isn't worth it to have someone inexperienced. I feel bad saying it because everyone has to learn somehow, but god it just wasn't worth the hassle to be a nice person!

I was also sick in labour but only once in the first stage quite early (well after 24 hours or so) and before I'd gone to hospital. DP was going on at me to eat some food and I couldn't face it, forced myself to and was sick within an hour. should have listened to my body!

I think gas and air is definitely one of these things you either take to or not - but given it lasts a very short amount of time, its worth trying out. I was really worried it wouldn't agree with me as (confession time Blush) in my younger days when I used to go clubbing, we used to do nitrous oxide (I think it's been banned now but 10 years or so ago was very prevalent in clubs and festivals) and after a while it really started to disagree with me - made me paranoid and hallucinate which I hated. So I was apprehensive about using it in birth but obviously you have a much more controlled/lower dosage in hospital, and it just made me feel a bit light headed. not drunk as such (though DP said that I sounded drunk when talking after taking it), just 'nice'. It was great. Didn't work so well once I was a bit farther along though!

hello to all newbies and welcome! [waves]

Gem that's a really good point from your MW, although I am probably going to be quite happy jumping a few steps in the middle of the ladder!

Sher that's rubbish about your bag, I have that worry every time I pop one in my bag... So far so good but i'll probably forget about it at some point and drop my bag from a great height and break it..

7th March due date here so looks like there are a load of us hovering around mothers day although some of you look like you might sneak across the line early.. Our NCT group I have now met stretches from the 26th Feb to 19th April - that is going to be rubbish for the last person!

Well bump is a offically head down and everything is well out of the way and where it should be. Still definantly team blue too!

Scan looked just as alien like as I remember with dd at such a late stage. Was given a picture of him cuddled up to the plancenta, and can just about make out top lip, nose and eye. His on the left looking very comfortable, placenta on the right. Estemated to be 5lbs11ozs today.

As of next week will be googling ways to naturally induce labour and trying everything going.

I have to say I've always had really good experiences with medical students, but will be in the they can watch but not touch camp when it comes to labour and delivery. Or they can do things that aren't too intrusive after others have, I was poked and prodded loads by varrious medics as dd was in such a unsual breech presntion and they wanted to learn first hand what it felt like. I've often seen training gps at our surgery and they have always been fantastic. Dd was scaned by loads of traniee radiographas for her hips and they were often better than the qualified staff with her. Had a student midwife with us when dd was born and she was such an amazing support in the run up to elcs.

maybe I was really sicky towards end of pregnancy with dd and I was told I'd be offer anti emetics in labour if I needed them. My mum threw up all over my dad when she was induced with me, 27 years later he still brings it up every birthday...

I'm due on the 2nd too gem.

Dobby Great news about the scan, the picture is adorable, his nose is too cute Smile

Mship great news on the glucose test and good luck with the scan Flowers

I wonder how beautiful and Scared got on with their scans?

Just been really naughty and got KFC for lunch, I feel so bad but she's loving in there Blush

Dobbie glad everything went ok.. It took me a minute of magic eye squinting there to find him! The weights the rest of you are coming back with from your scans are starting to reassure me a bit more that I'm not so far out like the consultant made out! She turned away from cuddling the placenta to give us a thumbs up or the finger depending on how you look at it

Lovely scan pictures, it took me a while to work yours out too dobby!

I'm due on the 4th so looks like there's quite a few of us bunched up at the beginning of the month and maybe even a few will creep into February.

Just had my 34 week appointment, unfortunately my bloods weren't back yet to see about my iron levels but I'm to call back at the beginning of next week. Everything else good and bump continues to measure bang on, he is turning out to be a very straightforward average baby so far so hoping for a similarly straightforward average labour!
