Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Hello everyone,

I am very new to this all and am not familiar with all of the abbreviations so please do bear with me!

I had quite a (happy) shock yesterday morning when I found out I am pregnant after doing a clear blue digital test, I am 4 weeks and 2 days according to the MyDays app, due on the 31st July. My husband and I only decided to start trying at the start of this month, so everything is happening very quickly indeed, I thought it would take longer. It's my first pregnancy and I have come to ask for some advice since I really am not sure of what to do next.

How soon should I go and see the doctor? I booked an appointment this morning with the GP but it's not until the 7th Dec, should I see someone sooner than this? Then what are the next steps/next appointments needed?

I have been having mild cramps on and off and sore boobs, am also feeling very tired today, other than that, no real noticeable symptoms. I have read cramps at this early stage are quite normal?

Sorry for sounding like a complete novice, but any help and guidance would be appreciated!

:)

Catching up whilst at work. On a break, munching on walnuts and apricots.

I have a question about counting weeks: My last period started 20 October. Am I 5 or 6 weeks in?

And yes, I am having a very basic math fail. Help!

BeauticianNotMagician81 · 24/11/2015 15:57

You are 5 weeks pregnant Pulpi

redstrawberries101 · 24/11/2015 15:59

Pulpi - makes you 5

Lucybearbear- welcome! My first preg also. I phoned doctors and explained and they said The midwifery service
Have taken over from
GPs in terms of
Maternity care now and gave me a phone number to ring. The midwife service was really nice, they booked
Me in for 8 week booking appt and 12 week scan.

If you do have any health considerations etc or just fancy seeing your gp then you can make an appt with them also.

BeauticianNotMagician81 · 24/11/2015 15:59

You are so good munching on walnuts & apricots. I've just munched on Haribo jelly babies Sad

pulpi · 24/11/2015 16:00

Thanks Beautician! I thought so but couldn't be sure because of the maths. Or my exhaustion. It's probably the exhaustion.

VulvaVoom · 24/11/2015 16:01

I would say the pain was moderate but not agony. It hurt most when I tried to wee, shooty type pains up the bum, sorry! I honestly thought it was trapped wind until it didn't go away and then I kind of twigged.

I wasn't surprised when they said it was ectopic after that Sad

redstrawberries101 · 24/11/2015 16:27

Thanks voom, I never would have known that. Wishing you all the best!

SoniaShoe · 24/11/2015 16:34

Congratulations lucybearbear

CultureSucksDownWords · 24/11/2015 16:39

Hi everyone. So many new people since the last time I posted!

Just popped on to say that I had my scan date through for the 29th Dec, so I've booked a private one for the 19th. I'd like to have a scan before Christmas so that I can be in a position to tell family without having to add a note of caution.

allthegoodnamesalreadytaken · 24/11/2015 16:44

mack those are the two on my list as well. Broomfield video looks good but at the same time Basildon maternity has an "outstanding" rating by CQC decisions, decisions.....

jemimahpuddleduck · 24/11/2015 16:46

So sorry to hear your news Roto and Voom, I hope you are both being well looked after.

Sickness is starting to feel much less constant now, but definitely still there at the end of the day or when I get too hungry.

Have told family now and a couple of friends, so nice not to have hide that I'm not feeling 100%.

9+3

Lucybearbear · 24/11/2015 16:49

thanks Melvali for the advice, much appreciated and congrats to you! I have just spoken to the GP again and apparently at my practice you have to see the GP first in order to get a midwife referral...sounds like a bit of a waste of time to me but hey, what do I know!

What's a 'booking in' appointment? Does this have to be done with the midwife? Am just trying to work dates out in my diary for the new year.

Does anyone know whether I would I be eligible for a private scan before xmas, or at 4W+2D today, would that be a bit soon? Would be nice to tell some family around xmas otherwise I am going to get the Spanish inquisition no doubt :D

jemimahpuddleduck · 24/11/2015 16:57

Lucy I had a scan at 8+2 and could see heartbeat etc, I expect if you wait until xmas week you would be able to see something.

Lucybearbear · 24/11/2015 16:58

oh and thanks SoniaShoe :)

Lucybearbear · 24/11/2015 17:01

jemimahpuddleduck thank you, thats amazing I might see something that soon! Where did you go for your private scan? I am central London so any recommendations would be appreciated!

Mordirig · 24/11/2015 17:05

Hello Lucybearbear Congratulations! You can pay for a private scan, but at 4 weeks you won't see much, definitely no heartbeat will be present, you may see the sac but that's about it.
I would wait until at least 6-7 weeks because they should be able to find the Heart beat by then, where I live its about £100 for one basic scan so I would save that and get a private scan later when you can see more.
You get a routine scan on the NHS between 10-13 weeks usually arranged by the Midwife at your booking in apt which should be done with your MW around 8 weeks, That apt takes about an hour and you have urine checked for infections/glucose, blood pressure taken, weighed, overall medical history of both you and the fathers, checking for any genetic conditions.

SoniaShoe · 24/11/2015 17:06

culture that's a shame you didn't get your 12 week scan before christmas but a private one will give you the reassurance anyway.

lucy my surgery requires you to have a GP appointment first. i think its so they can check that you definitely wanted the pregnancy and all was ok, then they refer you on to the midwife. the first midwife appointment is at around 8 weeks and is called the booking appointment (although i had mine today and i still have to go back and finish it off in 3 weeks because the midwife was sick). once you've done that appointment they can book you in for your first scan and tests which are at around 12 weeks.

you can book a private scan for when you want - but i think you can't really pick up a heartbeat until about 6 weeks, and definitely by 8 weeks (I paid for an 8 week one and i don't regret spending the money, its made me relax a lot more about spotting every symptom which i was before). ultrasound direct do them around the country.

jemima great to hear you're telling people and the sickness is settling down for you. you must be our furthest along?

Lucybearbear · 24/11/2015 17:16

Hello Mordirig and thank you for your reply, super helpful. I think I will wait until xmas week for a private scan when I will be 8+ weeks, then hopefully I will see a heartbeat and have some reassurance to tell close family.

jemimahpuddleduck · 24/11/2015 17:22

Lucy my scan was on the NHS as my dates were unclear and I could have potentially been 12 weeks instead of 8 weeks. It turned out I was 8 as expected but they needed to be sure for the nuchal tests to be carried out. I'm sure others will be along to advise on where to go though.

Sonia I am the furthest by 1 day then its Becks I think. DD 25 June but didn't know that when I started with this thread and then didn't want to leave you all Wink

Lucybearbear · 24/11/2015 17:22

thank you SoniaShoe, glad to hear other GP's do the same! Sorry you had a bit of a nightmare with you appointment today, hope you get your 12 week scan booked in with no further problems x

BergamotMouse · 24/11/2015 17:49

Just booked a private early scan for 19th December. Very excited!

I went to doctors yesterday. Found it all a bit embarrassing as I fancied the doctor (who wasn't particularly attractive). I blame the pregnancy hormones / the fact that he seemed so knowledgeable about all things pregnancy related!!

I just booked my midwife appointment myself at the time as she comes to the surgery but I've just realised I'll only be 6+4. Is that too early? Or is it just to get the ball rolling and it doesn't really matter how far along you are?

SoniaShoe · 24/11/2015 17:51

bergamot i think if the midwife will see you that early then that's fine, there is nothing in that appointment you necessarily have to be 8 weeks for. i think they like to wait until around 8 weeks as there is A LOT of paperwork and the chances of something going wrong are reduced by then

BergamotMouse · 24/11/2015 17:55

Ah, thanks Sonia. The doctor just said book in for 2-3 weeks time so I went for 2 weeks but only realised after it might be a bit early.

MissClarke86 · 24/11/2015 17:59

Hi ladies. Is anyone else feeling a bit blue? I think the initial excitement has now turned into fear...I almost feel a bit 'homesick' and sad about the life I love that's going to change!? Worrying about finances and how it might affect my relationship with my partner too.

I know the outcome will be well worth it but at the moment I just feel very teary. OH is stressed/worrying too so it doesn't help that he can't really drag me out of it!

I'm normally really happy, looking forward to the next thing - a meal out, Christmas, etc but I just don't feel bothered about any of it.

Hoping it's just hormones and it'll wear off...
