Wow that's so exciting!!! I need to update to my new name on the spreadsheet...I wonder if any of us will be on that day!

16 week appt tomorrow. Have been feeling really nervous all of a sudden.

Hello new people! Welcome!

3 stone madsaz amazing!!

goneswimming · 27/08/2015 18:28

Great bump calypso, I can't wait to have one!

madsaz76 · 27/08/2015 18:39

Met community midwife for 16 week appointment today. All well & we really get on which is ice.

I do have a bump but its not a nice neat one, it's a bit B shaped with lower part baby and upper part gut/ displaced fat. Because I lost weight I did have to work hard on the acceptance of weight gain - now I am now longer nauseated I think I will gain plenty of weight.

I realised I had a load of credits on audible to use, so went on and searched for pregnancy. I have found a hypnobirthing audiobook - but there are hundreds of really strange things on there. Apparently there is a whole pregnancy section of "erotica" that sounds anything but erotic. I figured I would give it a miss Shock

Scared myself quite a bit tonight listening with the Doppler to baby. I listened this morning and was all normal, listened tonight because I was having intense cramps. I love listening to his heart and knowing he is in there but don't like listening to the heart murmur that all babies have. As I moved the probe the heart sounds changed completely and went from galloping horse to trainers in a washing machine, which is what you hear when there is a hole in the heart. Haven't heard anything like this before. Going to get DH to have a listen when he finally gets home. Baby has moved and I'm hoping that I'm just picking up his heart from a different angle and it is normal valves making the noise. The scan on Tuesday showed 4 chambers but was far too early for checking for abnormalities. Somewhere in my brain from my embryology lectures I'm thinking babies have a hole in their heart to allow mixing of blood and that it is normal but it is 15 years later and I have baby brain. Sometimes having medical knowledge isn't the best thing!

SweetCharlotteRose · 27/08/2015 21:15

Rufus the sound changes in accordance to where the baby and Doppler are I think.
Mine sometimes sounds like horses, other times like a train, other times makes a clunk shhhh clunk shhhh sound. It changes as the baby moves. Must be how the Doppler picks the sound waves up? Honestly don't think they can detect the sorts of problems you are concerned about.

jellypi3 · 27/08/2015 21:18

I think home dopplers are such a danger, we are too likely to miss things and get things wrong.

madsaz76 · 27/08/2015 21:21

Rufus

hand held dopplers aren't really directional enough to give you a lot of detail about the noises - you can't diagnose a defect with them. That's why I (with medical knowledge) have chosen not to get one. It's entirely possible the different sound is placental flow. I am working hard at being an ordinary pregnant woman who is managed by other people.

You may recall that the lungs aren't active in a foetus, so there are a number of ways the foetal circulation bypasses them - the ductus arteriosus, and also the interventricular septum isn't fused. The first breath after birth causes a rapid change in pressures, and the atrial septal defect and ductus close. So it would be completely normal for there to be a left right shunt in baby.

I am making a very clear point of not being my own doctor because I am at risk of overthinking. Sometimes it's possible to try too hard. Maybe get your midwife to check, but I wonder if the doppler is all that comforting if it makes you worry?

haquoi123 · 27/08/2015 21:30

madsaz that's pretty cool info, thanks! I've been thinking of getting a doppler but I think I'll leave it be. My worry isn't about the baby anyway, it's the cervix. I want a permanent picture of what's going on down there! What's your work?

Rufus200 · 27/08/2015 21:35

Thank you ladies. Love having a DH who spends all day doing echo cardiology, he has just got home. Apparently the sound change is because I am hearing it without the murmur and hearing all 4 heart sounds instead of just the usual 2 you hear in adults. He was quite impressed that the Doppler could pick them up. So completely normal!

madsaz76 · 27/08/2015 22:33

I'm and acute physician - so a little bit of lots of things. It doesn't help when you are pregnant except in having a clear idea about what I don't want!

haquoi123 · 28/08/2015 05:34

Urgh, wrote a long post and then lost it! But I'm still awake half an hour later so trying again!

rufus that is cool, and useful! Glad your DH could put your mind at rest.

madsaz, I had to look that up, but now that I have I'm thoroughly impressed! I can see why it might not be so helpful in pregnancy though. For me, I'm a musician and my ignorance is what frightens me! It's all pretty interesting though, what I'm learning via consultant care.

Have failed on the whole sleep thing tonight. The pillows that were helping me sleep ended up hurting my back and I kept getting headaches, but trying without means I've had a couple of sleepless nights. Awake at 4.30am today, and that's not including my midnight pee! Gah! And I'm questioning the wisdom of going camping this weekend...

jellypi3 · 28/08/2015 08:20

haqoi I feel your pain re the sleep front. Had hip pain on my left last night and I'm doing my best not to sleep on my back or my right. Ended up going for a walk at 3am round the house to shift it.

Also ended up in hospital Wednesday night. Had a really strong pain all down my lower right abdomen, phoned 111 and they told me to go to A&E. This was about 2am. Eventually ended up in the delivery suite, midwife listened to baby's heartbeat and all was fine. She said I might have pulled a muscle or ligament and in future to call them because 111 are useless for pregnancy things, they just send you straight to hospital. So now I know! I've booked a private scan today for some reassurance though!

Tiredoftiredness · 28/08/2015 09:32

Poor you jellypi , doesn't sound like a fun Wednesday night! Glad all ok, and hope you enjoy the scan today.

Not been on much recently as not much happening- no movements, no sickness, just tiredness and big belly! 4weeks to wait for next scan, seems a long time!

XingXingFox · 28/08/2015 10:25

Just had an appt and heard the heartbeat, big relief. I'm still feeling rubbish! This is really dragging on now. Feel like September is busy with midwife home visit to prep for home birth, scan and next GP. I quite like having lots of things in the diary to break it up.

I feel really excited about having a baby today. Am really looking forward to getting to know this little one.

haquoi123 · 28/08/2015 10:37

jelly I know how terrifying those emergency appointments are and I'm so so pleased to hear that all is ok with your baby. I've been getting hip pains as well! Both sides, but sometimes I can't put wait kon the leg. Annoying. Need to do some exercise methinks.

tired when's your 20 week scan?

fox I'm excited as well! It makes up for all the feeling crap doesn't it?

Had another cervix scan today and it's growing! A good 4cm! Thankfully! Final scan at 24 weeks with consultant and then they'll release me back to midwife care, woo! Baby was sleeping yet again, doesn't seem to ever want to show off for us!

SweetCharlotteRose · 28/08/2015 10:57

I'm 17+1 now and still not feeling much movement. Some days I think I feel something but mainly nothing. This is dc2 and I'm only slim.
At the scan on Tuesday she was moving around and I couldn't feel that so maybe I just can't feel her yet. She's measuring fine for dates so not especially small or anything.

Jelly glad the baby was ok, enjoy your scan today xx

Haquoi congratulations on your, um, cervix!

SweetCharlotteRose · 28/08/2015 10:57

Oh and I'm STILL not showing. My dh's niece is five weeks behind me, first baby, and has a proper bump.

jellypi3 · 28/08/2015 11:26

charlotte im not showing that much and i'm not a slim jim but i play a lot of sports, so i think that helps in the stomach muscles not relaxing so quick?

Stepawayfromthezebras · 28/08/2015 11:32

I had a midwife appointment today and heard the heartbeat Smile Apparently little one was moving loads so that's a relief, after a couple of flutters last week I've not felt anything since.

clarabellski · 28/08/2015 11:34

hiya charlotte I'm not showing much either. Try to not worry, everyone's body is different Flowers

I did some squats at the gym for the first time since BFP yesterday (so in nearly 4 months). Bloody hell, I'm still walking like John Wayne...It's depressing how quickly you loose muscle & strength. Just had some chocolate cake to cheer myself up though Grin

Hope everyone has fun weekend plans. I'm guessing lots of you have a cheeky bank holiday? Not me as in Scotchland Sad

monkerina · 28/08/2015 12:01

Charlotte, I'm slim and not showing either- I can feel my womb, but can't see anything and just look a bit podgy. When did you start showing with your first child?

Suffering with headaches here at the moment- I have a neuro condition which gave me intractable headaches and migraines for a number of years, they finally lifted after some ops a couple of years ago, but it feels like they're back. Hopefully just hormones, which is why my nose is also stuffed up! Anyone else suffering?

CurlyA · 28/08/2015 12:19

Monkerina I'm also suffering with headaches. I don't normally get them at all (apart from bad hangovers which I'm obviously not getting at the moment!). Paracetamol Isn't doing much for me either! Confused
