ovuma me too! I can't believe how fast it's gone, although I'm betting the last 10 weeks drag!!

lastnightiwenttomanderley · 21/05/2015 21:14

llama for an ignorant newbie, can you explain a bit about the delayed cord clamping?
Really starting to sink in now, we had a delivery of teeny clothes yesterday! Haven't even thought about hospital bags! Still waiting to find out when in August we're going to be moving house. Eek!

Finally thinking about buying stuff and I'm totally baffled by bedding! Will be getting a chicco next 2 me crib and then a normal cot bed for the nursery and I'm at a loss with fitted sheets, waterproof sheets, flat sheets, blankets, gro bags, just arrrgh! lol

thanks llama both bits of info there are really helpful, much easier to understand than all the official bumph!

Crazy to think that I'm now over 50% of the way there. Went to see a daycare / nursery yesterday for next year (have to get in early round here) which we both really liked, altho the cost is eye watering. Also bought some clothes on the boden sale including a very snazzy snowsuit for winter as it gets so cold here. Really starting to feel real now as a result!

mrsdos · 22/05/2015 14:01

misss I had my sil point out that I am over halfway now this morning and I kinda sat in disbelief! stupid I know

Feeling my better about weight gain/shape now, realised I am growing another human so why would I not gain/change!? Also tried on a dress which I bought ages ago that I wasnt sure if I liked and now fits perfectly around bump which is quite nice Smile also found a nice non-alcoholic wine yesterday so sat on the sofa with a glass last night.. dh did a double take when he came home Grin Grin

Maths88 · 22/05/2015 14:17

Just had scan and baby all good. She said he's average for all his measurements and that suits me just fine! Also my bp down a bit so that's great!

Got another scan in 4 weeks - think they just being extra careful with my weight and bp!

23+6 - very excited to be 24 tomorrow

Jessica32 · 22/05/2015 14:44

choccy another thing to remember about bedding. Cot bumpers can't be used once the baby can sit up and personally I wouldn't use them once they are moving around and grabbing things so to be honest there's little point to them. Especially if you're using a crib, as they will be in that at the point you're able to use a bumper. Quilts can't be used until the baby is a year old and bumpers and quilts shouldn't be used together. As a result the matching sets you see in all the shops are not a good use of money.
As envious said, cellular blankets are best as they are considered safest and can be easily layered depending on the temp. You would put a flat sheet over baby and then the required number of cellulars. I've also been told what envious said, that baby sleeping bags are great once they are able to kick off their covers (but can't pull them back over so wake up due to cold). They have to be a certain weight for them (8 pounds I think) so if your baby is small you won't be able to use them from new born anyway.

Choccyhobnob · 22/05/2015 15:04

Yes I knew that about bumpers, have bought a set anyway (but only as they came as a set with a quilt and sheet from Asda and was cheaper than a lot of the individual items I've seen elsewhere!) likely it will never be used!

So the flat sheet goes OVER the baby? See I had no idea! lol

Treaclepie19 · 22/05/2015 15:45

Interesting to see all this about bedding.

Glad to see I'm on the right track. I've got this worry about baby wriggling under blankets though :(

We bought a 0-6 month sleeping bag but I know you're not meant to use them until they're a certain weight.

Treacle you sleep the baby with its feet touching the end of the cot, that way they can't wriggle down.

ARV1981 · 22/05/2015 16:26

There's so much to worry about.

Baby gets too hot, too cold... I'm freaking out a little here that I'll do something wrong.

Treaclepie19 · 22/05/2015 17:00

Yeah that's what I'd read Jessica, I'm just neurotic :p

Meinthecorner · 22/05/2015 17:53

I was always worried with my first whether he was too hot or cold especially as our house is permanently cold in winter. Another good tip is that pillowcases make good bottom sheets for moses baskets. Some nights we went through 3 or 4 changes of bedding due to leaks and sick and they worked well. As enviousllama mentioned above we also tucked a muslin in to try and catch the sicky dribble.

Lovelybitofsquirrel · 22/05/2015 21:42

Another thing to remember is that a folded blanket counts as two, so when you're looking up bedding for certain temp rooms bear that in mind.

ARV1981 · 23/05/2015 07:41

Thank you squirrel. I think I may have to get a room thermometer...

Talking of getting stuff, I was talking to my sis last night. A few years ago she sadly had a stillborn baby (just telling you for context), she doesn't have any living children. She called at the point me and my DH were talking about what baby stuff we're going to buy. I've done a spreadsheet so we can keep an eye on costs, but hopefully not forget anything. I said this to my sis (because I'm excited, and a bit strange because I make spreadsheet for everything...) and she said I probably wouldn't need half the stuff... I didn't tell her what was on the list, just that I'd made it. I'm now confused. I've tried to be really careful and not buy unnecessary things, but this is all new to me so maybe I have/will.

Things on the list:

Pram/travel system
Cot & bedding (mattress, sheets, blankets)
Baby bath stand thing to hold the baby in the bath - my other sis had one and says it made bathtime easier
Car seat and car seat base
Pram blankets & sheets
Babygros
Little hats
Bibs
Bodysuits
Changing bag
Changing mat

We already have hand-me-down cloth nappies, and I got some cheeky wipes.

I don't want to upset my sis by telling her not to tell me what to do, but she doesn't have experience of actually looking after a baby. I'm not trying to sound heartless here, her loss was massive. I am fully sensitive to her feelings, which I know will be mixed, especially because we're identical twins so my baby may look a lot like hers.

Have I got too much stuff on the list though? Can any experienced mums tell me if I've gone overboard? I don't want to spend unnecessarily as our budget is tight, but neither do I want to miss something off and have a mad rush to get it with a baby in tow.

I'm also getting a bundle from my sis-in-law of stuff her baby has grown out of. I'm not planning on buying any clothes until I've got this as I don't know what's in it!

I'm pretty sure we'll get other pressies too from well wishers. My mother-in-law has gone into a knitting frenzy so going to have lots of lovely soft baby cardies too...

monkeymoonpig · 23/05/2015 07:49

arv your list looks fine to me! Only thing we didnt have for DS was a baby bath, preferred to bath him in main bath with bath slonge thingy, but a lot of parents prefer bath (esp if had a cs) so cant see there's anything wasteful on your list :) would also add muslins to it tho, soooo much dribble in the early days!

monkeymoonpig · 23/05/2015 07:50

*sponge, not slonge! Lol

ARV1981 · 23/05/2015 07:59

Thank you.... I got some muslins on offer ages ago, sorry forgot to add that to the list!

We will be bathing baby in the main bath, I'm getting one of those things that hold baby in the main bath -www.johnlewis.com/angelcare-soft-baby-bath-support/p231850148 not sure how to describe it... my other sister had one and said it was easier than trying to bath her DS without it... I may leave that until after baby's been born though!!!

Maths88 · 23/05/2015 09:06

So many things to think about! I've gotta of lists but as we don't move into our house until the end of July we aren't buying any of the big things until then. It scares me invade baby decides to make a dramatic early exit and we don't have anything, but there are no signs of him doing that at the moment!

Off to Cyprus tomorrow for our last little break before this all gets real - it's a family wedding while we are out there so will probably be very busy but still good!

Any of the other teacher folks on here going away this week?
