At 28 wk appt my question will be what about these amenity plus rooms where DH would be allowed to stay the night. Whenever I'm at the hospital I see posters about them but apparently they cost £500 per night which is obviously ridiculous but on the other hand how much nicer would my hopefully one night in hospital be with own en suite room and DH there to tend to my needs and change baby and hand him to me for feeding after section. Mum and dad would happily have DD for the night so that would be fine...

I really need to man up innit.

ChickenMe · 27/01/2015 12:08

Thanks all for listening to my angstConfusedGrin
I remember your Gran in law I think Hiding. Does not sound like she is listening to anyone! Wasn't she being a pain before? Hopefully if she's old she won't be racing around anywhere?
Yes I think the thing is is we want to learn things ourselves, do things our own ways and people can be unwittingly smothering. It's like they forget you're an adult. I'm sure in most cases here we are all independent people, used to looking after ourselves etc and well-meant comments can feel smothering and infantilising.

kismac · 27/01/2015 12:18

I've got 28 week appointment tomorrow and Im tempted to mention the dreaded words 'birth plan'. Dun dun dun. There's been no mention of it so far so kinda just want to get things moving. I'd hate to have got excited and then to be told 'no, we don't actually have a birthing pool' or 'because you're high risk you can't have x y or z'.

ChickenMe · 27/01/2015 12:20

They didn't mention birth plan at mine kismac. I would love a pool-are you planning to ask for that? Do they have an MLU? I'm under the consultant so no pool for me.

BananaToast · 27/01/2015 12:27

I think in my notes it says to discuss birth plan at 36 week appointment, so I've got a while yet.

kismac · 27/01/2015 12:38

I'd love a water birth but Im consultant led care so think that means no but I want to know if they'd at least let me wallow in the pool beforehand.

Siarie · 27/01/2015 13:15

Just got all the documents through for my SMP to start on the 9th of Feb, It won't mean much difference as I'm home anyway but good to know were able to make use of it. Just need to pickup my Matb1 form tomorrow now, I could have picked it up yesterday but totally forgot and just wanted to get back home (after covering myself in Lucozade).

I haven't discussed any birth plans yet although the MW did ask if I had and thoughts about where I wanted to go at my 25 week appointment.

Rustyzilla · 27/01/2015 13:25

Wow this thread moves so fast it is impossible to work full time and keep up! Smile

I am sorry, I am not at all caught up with the conversations, but am I right in thinking there were some on here who had been diagnosed with gestational diabetes? I have just found out I have it too (literally, just found out an hour ago). I have no idea what it means in terms of what I can/can't eat and also whether I ought to be worried about the effect on the baby. I am seeing my MW tomorrow but in the meantime was wondering if anyone has any advice/tips/info they care to share?

I'm 30w today.

Thanks! Flowers

ps ages ago I think someone was talking about huggies nappies and how you can't get them here anymore? I just bought a box in Costco at the weekend.

PenguinPoser · 27/01/2015 13:38

Rusty sorry to hear about your GD. Hopefully midwife will be able to give you loads of info, and you should be referred to a consultant as well. Basically as long as you keep your blood sugars well controlled (you will probably be given a home monitor) then the risks to baby are low, if blood sugars run too high it can increase the risk of big baby/c section and a few other things.

In terms of diet (you should be given loads of 'official' info about this) it's sticking to 'healthy' things - less sugar and more long acting carbs like brown bread/rice rather than white, low fat meats, vegetables. Depending what your blood results are like they might advise diet only, or might start medication such as metformin to lower your sugars.

Try having a look on patient.co.uk and also diabetes uk website for their info on gestational diabetes, those sites generally have good up to date reliable info (unlike some of what you read on the internet!). You will be well looked after and closely monitored to make sure you have a healthy baby Smile

cinnamongreyhound · 27/01/2015 13:42

Not really smogsville, just an unpleasant meeting. I have to get used to not being popular when doing something like that and staff need to be more professional! We some acting staff who have a performance review next week so we postponed making a decision and they behaved like petulant children.

I think it's because there's a main blood vessel that can get squashed when you lay on your right and reduce blood flow to baby Hidingthefear, in first aid they always tell you put pregnant ladies in the recovery position on their left f at all possible.

I can see why you'd be upset ChickenMe but I think it depends on how it's meant. My mum often says our baby but I know it's meant tongue in cheek and she's too worried about upsetting me and not seeing the kids to try and force herself on me.

I used to be a Bodyshop consultant Lauren82000 and had a customer who was a dentist and she hated the smell of mint and wouldn't even consider the peppermint foot treatments Wink

My notes are similar to BananaToast's and say what will be discussed at each appointment. I won't be seen now by the midwife until end of feb which will make me 34 and a bit weeks.

TinyTear · 27/01/2015 13:44

Hi Rusty, might have been me and we have a few more here in the group.

I had GD last time and once again...

main things I did to my diet: cut fruit juice - have NONE at all, fruit fine, juice, no, too much concentrated sugar...

reduce carbs, you still need carbs but have less of them... brown better...

basically also try a low GI diet...

No cakes, no sweets, ok for special occasions (my nurse said i could have my DD's birthday cake, but just to write it on my notes)

You should be seeing a specialist diabetic dietitian and nurse. I had appointments every 2 weeks and growth scans every 4 weeks.

In the end I needed metformin last time and then insulin for a few weeks in the end as my fasting levels and breakfast were the main issue...

Now I have already startted on a smaller dose of metformin

TinyTear · 27/01/2015 13:48

Also, they said never to mix two carbs in the same meal, e.g. if you have pizza, don't have garlic bread; if you have curry with rice, don't have naan...

Rustyzilla · 27/01/2015 14:07

Thanks Tiny and Penguin, it's good to know there are people out there who can help with advice! I am a bit Hmm as I was the one who insisted I had the GTT, my dad is diabetic, which I told MW at booking in, but until I mentioned it at my 28w appointment having the test wasn't on the cards. Good job I did insist! Am just worried now that I have done the baby harm by managing to get GD! Sad And scared to eat anything in case it's going to do more damage!

TinyTear · 27/01/2015 14:19

no you didn't do any harm, both now and last time I only got diagnosed at 28/29 weeks... don't panic! (i did last time, a bit...)

FiRaffe · 27/01/2015 14:59

I agree Rusty, work is getting in the way of MN!

Still not heard anything from the hospital on the GTT - I wish they would just let you know...waiting until next Monday for my next midwife appointment is making me worry more!!!

smogsville · 27/01/2015 15:00

Rusty most people only get diagnosed quite late on. Now just focus on the right foods and good luck.

Doc surgery just called, poor DD has a urine infection! We dropped a sample in bc she was saying her wee was stinging and they initially said nothing's showing up but sent it to the lab to be sure. Mum or DH going to pick up prescription this arvo Sad

TheBooMonster · 27/01/2015 15:15

Arg!! After the stress I had with MiL about wanting to replace the crib mattress and steriliser I had come to the conclusion it's better to go ahead and get the stuff I want and then seek 'forgiveness' for my 'reckless' spending than to mention stuff before we do it and effectively be seeking 'permission' thereby giving them the opportunity to say we shouldn't do it. Guess who's idiot DH therefore mentioned our intention to replace a £100+ piece of kit to his parents this morning. They reacted exactly as I expected, could have bloody killed him!!

Cheeky wipes are reusable wipes brain is fryer from catching up so I can't remember who asked, was it you hiding?

cinnamongreyhound · 27/01/2015 16:07

Others probably know more Rustyzilla but the biggest thing in my understanding in GD is a bigger baby and your health not that baby's. Routine tests are 24werks and anyone measuring big or with excess fluid is later. If they were worried about you adjusting yor diet immediately you'd already have been seen so try not to worry. You will be seen quickly with a diet plan soon I'm sure but others have given you advice. Please don't worry about damage you've done, it's nothing you've done! I spent a lot of time blaming myself for my baby's kidney/bladder problem and its a pointless use of time and doesn't help anyone Sad

Wish your dd well soon smogsville!

Boo that's so annoying! What business is it of theirs what you spend your money on? Can you (or your DP) have a chat with them, setting out that although you value their opinion, they need to respect that you are the only ones who get to decide how you spend your cash?

BrixtonBunny · 27/01/2015 16:14

Smogs sorry about your DD, hope she gets better soon Sad

smogsville · 27/01/2015 16:31

Thanks cinnamon and Brixton. I feel a bit bad for not taking sample in as soon as she first mentioned it. we were a bit crap about picking up a pot and then dropping it in quickly. No excuse as surgery very nearby. She seems fine 'in herself' so hoping it's quite mild especially as it didn't show up on initial test. Thank goodness for doc who sent it onto the lab to be checked (an 'i love my NHS' moment for sure).

Smog poor DD - hope she feels better soon.

Rusty I don't have a lot to offer on GD but try not to worry about having harmed baby - like cinnamon says, they would have you in there immediately for diet advice and metformin/insulin if they were seriously concerned. And cinnamon definitely don't blame yourself for the kidney problem, unfortunately these things just happen sometimes - it won't have been anything you've done. It's hard not to wonder if you could have done anything differently but from what I've read you're very conscientious so I'm sure you wouldn't have been able to prevent it happening.

Boo that's so annoying about your MIL - I don't get why they think they should have an opinion on what you do with your money! Sympathy. I'm lucky with my in-laws - they're very chilled out and non-intrusive... being on the other side of the world helps with that though! I'd rather have them closer and more involved if I could.

smogsville · 27/01/2015 17:00

Thanks Squatting, thanks Banana. DD can be quite sanctimonious and a bit of a hypochondriac for her age, I expect DH and I will now be told off 'you should have taken me sooner' and so on! At the slightest cough she tends to demand to be taken to surgery.

FiRaffe · 27/01/2015 17:30

Hope your DD feels better soon smogs.

Can anyone explain a bit more about Braxton Hicks - i've read bits but none say where the discomfort is or what it feels like. just had a few odd feelings this afternoon and trying to work out what might be going on!
