We're doing NCT too - booked with my eyes shut, they're so expensive! But I think they'll be great for meeting local mums. Mine also start first week of Feb Smile

catsofa · 27/11/2014 21:19

I'm doing the NCT classes because I get a massive discount because of being on a low income. Ours is not until March, but my due date is 30th April and I figured my DP should be living with me by then so we can go together. First time for me but he has had a baby before so should know what he's doing.

Did NCT last time and made a couple of great friends. Won't be doing it this time but would totally recommend

daholster · 27/11/2014 21:28

Hi all and welcome feefifoe. Nice to see you nunkie!

Had our scan today. All ok, thank goodness. The sonographer took AGES looking at the heart and me and dh were getting really anxious... But eventually she explained she was struggling to get the right view but now she had got it and all looked ok. Such a relief I could have cried! I was much more nervous this time, so was dh - the sonographer said it was because this time you truly know what you have got to lose. I think she might have been right.

We are team boy! Dd is hopefully going to have a little brother! [happy]

I did the 2 day intensive nhs course at the hospital. All the other ladies were ready to pop so didn't meet anyone to share with and I ended up in a private room so didn't buddy up with anyone on the ward.
We live in the middle of a deprived area (our bit is nice but it's sandwiched between 2 rough spots) and call me a snob but I didn't want to mingle with the dregs of society with no teeth and a 60 a day habit.

Think I'll try and find a nice mother and baby group this time, but I guess it depends how I feel.

Been feeling a bit constipated this week and I finally just managed to produce something on the toilet. Freaked me out though as my tummy had lost its bump definition and had gone all soft. Now I'm lying in bed and the baby is wiggling up a storm so it's just me being an idiot. Confused Must of flopped to the back now there's a bit more room back there. Blush

catsofa · 27/11/2014 21:30

I'm also going to a "Bumps and Babies" group nearby, which I've started already. Had a breastfeeding adviser come and talk to us, and some chats about different aspects of pregnancy and birth. I think they organise regular tours of the local hospital maternity unit and things like that too, which will be great.

cinnamongreyhound · 27/11/2014 21:47

We've been shopping with my mum today, always go during the week before my birthday, and she's persuaded ds2 it'll be more fun with her on 12th for my scan. She's bought some bits for the baby which is lovely but I'm scared to get too excited which I know is silly. I am having a very down evening. Got so much going on over the next couple of weeks and just can't enjoy it, need to pull myself together!!!!

Thanks Nunkie sorry to hear about your friend and glad you had a nice break :)

I was told at both mine in the last week Hidingthefear where the placenta was. Doesn't matter as long as it's not covering the birth canal so may have not mentioned but should be in your scan report (mines stuck in the back of my notes). Congrats on your boy, ds1 was due 13tb April :)

Hi usernamefeefifo!

Glad all is well TheBoomonster and the party went well :)

Great news daholster!

dancestomyowntune · 28/11/2014 08:16

So today I am going back to the antenatal clinic to have more monitoring of my blood pressure and hopefully the doc we saw on Wednesday will have chased up the nephrology specialist to see if they have any recommendations/if they want to see me too. I was told to expect to be there for quite a while so taking my kindle and dreading it Sad

Two of my kids have dance exams today and its the first time in almost ten years that I won't have been there to get them ready. Mind you, the oldest will probably be better without me nagging her!

Great to hear everyone's scan news. I'm still in shock that we are having another girl. Everyone had convinced me it would be another boy! The girls are thrilled as they are going to get the bigger bedroom now. Mind you the boys (who only moved into the big bedroom on Sunday) are a bit miffed!

EbwyIsUpTheDuff · 28/11/2014 09:11

the good news is they can medicate your blood pressure safely, dances

mine has always been high, I'm expected to go to see the midwife weekly to keep an eye on it.

it's an inconvenience rather than a worry for me.

my partner bought a tots to toddlers seat thing in the amazon lighning sales, and now can't understand why I'm freaking out about the fact I'm not at viability yet... I get supersticious about buying things too early.

Siarie · 28/11/2014 09:59

I don't think I'll make any friends, I've been living in London for a year now and I don't know anyone here. I've got some appointments booked at my GP for classes but I mean whenever I go there it's rare to see another person who speaks English.

I live in a really nice, safe well maintained area which happens to have been built in one of the poorest parts of London. So when I go out its either just locally or into central London. Locally it's all business people mostly, I think we will move eventually just need to decide where we like best.

TinyTear · 28/11/2014 10:00

I haven't bought anything for newbie yet, my parents have bought two sleepsuits, I think...

I bought a cow trunki on the amazon black friday deals. quite chuffed as we wanted one anyway

TinyTear · 28/11/2014 10:02

Siarie I am in London too and didn't join NCT last time, thought it was too expensive.

This time I looked into their refresher courses but it was still expensive and also meant taking time off work I rather save for spending with the baby...

I did the antenatal class at my hospital, and still met some of the others a few times but we just didn't click so after a while the meetings stopped and we removed eachother from FB...

Where in London are you? I'm NW

Maybe early in the new year we could do a mini London MN bump meet for lunch

Siarie · 28/11/2014 10:17

Tiny I'm E London, I think there might be a few people who are from London actually! Interesting idea.

London sure is a funny place, were still trying to decide the best family area with a rural feel. Too many options right now, Its too big lol!

TinyTear · 28/11/2014 10:21

I used to live in Leytonstone between 2005 and 2009
But most of my time in London I have been North!

My DH lived near Brick Lane but we wouldn't want to have a child there... we rent that flat out now

I'm also in London Siarie and TinyTear - but in one of the more family friendly areas in the SW. We don't go out locally all that much at the moment but think I'm going to make an effort to engage with local baby groups as there must be so much going on I'm just not aware of - EVERYONE has a baby. It's a great place to scope out prams Grin

TinyTear · 28/11/2014 11:00

yes, where I live isn't called sometimes 'pramstead' for nothing! Grin

makes it worth for me to live in a top floor flat (and lugging my uppababy up the stairs) as I love going to the heath as well...

i only met more people through my DD's nursery, her best friend lives in my street and her parents are quite nice so that is lucky... but i haven't got a proper group of mummy friends. it's hard as i work full time as well...

at birthday parties i see some of the mummies all know eachother and talk about coffee mornings but I am at work...

BananaToast · 28/11/2014 11:05

Ah see I am very glad we bought a ground floor flat now! At the time I wanted a first floor one but it will definitely be much more practical when baby arrives. We have Wimbledon Common nearby which is lovely for walks - here's hoping for a beautiful summer next year!

minipie · 28/11/2014 11:07

Sounds like you're near me Banana you can't move round here without bumping into a toddler/bugaboo/bump!

I booked for NCT last time but never made it as dd came at 34 weeks (they refunded me) In the end I joined a friends NCT group which was nice. There's a woman near me who runs classes specially for second time mothers, I might do that.

I've heard the NCT classes are good for making friends but the content is very heavily natural birth and breastfeeding focused so you don't get told much about eg c section or formula, which is a bit unhelpful IMO as lots of women end up with c section or formula even if they wanted natural and breast...But as I say I never actually went to the classes so I may be wrong!

TinyTear · 28/11/2014 11:12

that happened even in my NHS class... they were saying that about 25% end up with a section but were a bit dismissive and didn't really go into detail

actually looked pissed off when my DH said so statistically from this group if 8, 2 will have a section

and true enough two of us (me included) had EMCSs...

I am going for an ELCS next time, so the natural crowd would hate me... I have done the trying for natural thing... 6h at 9cm was no fun... sun roof straight away for me this time!

EbwyIsUpTheDuff · 28/11/2014 11:13

I didn't go to any childbirth classes etc, seemed pointless for me since I have to have caesarians anyway.

So I didn't meet anyone really offline until my eldest started nursery last year. I met a few great people through babyworld groups though I wouldn't bother this year - there seem to be about 3 of us on the April group and one of those I knew from my second child anyway!

EbwyIsUpTheDuff · 28/11/2014 11:14

oh, and despite the kids loving the lingo show, "Blodwen" was never in the running for a name for the bump-dweller!

FreedomHuntress · 28/11/2014 11:20

I used to live in your neck of the woods, Banana and minipie - I wonder how close! We have moved a lonnnnng way away now though. Had DS there (we were under the care of St.Helier, but I could have chosen St.Georges or Kingston), but we now have much more house for our money, and less of a commute for DH. And various other benefits.

I didn't bother with the NCT course - it felt very overpriced to me. I did do a local independent YogaBirth course, as well as the NHS one. Really glad I did both. The NHS one worked well for me as the mw recognised that I am a lentil-weaving hippy who wanted a homebirth if possible, but I had been told by the GP that because of my age I couldn't have one. So she OK'ed my homebirth and was also the one who actually came to deliver him.
