Taking the Plunge: Pregnancy thread

Justyouwaitandsee · 02/09/2014 07:08

As requested / promised, here is a brand new and sparkly thread for any graduates of the 'taking the plunge' thread over on the conception board who has now got their BFP, or anyone who has finally got their BFP after many years on the pill.

The (virtual) champagne is on ice and ready to celebrate each and every new arrival. Here's hoping for a sudden rush, after a very slow start!

My stats:
Age 30, DC#1, EDD 4th May, currently 5 weeks pregnant

Now where are you Catnip?!

Hi Lovebugs - I don't remember thigh ache either, but no symptom surprises me now and I think everyone has a slightly different experience...

OP posts:
Lovebugs2014 · 02/11/2014 08:27

Thigh ache has got better this weekend so not sure what that was all about! It's been an emotional roller coaster telling my close family and best friend this weekend but all are very happy for us even though I've says it's really early so not to get hopes too high or tell anyone else until after my 12wk scan around Christmas time! DH has come round to the idea of a private scan at 7/8wks to check all is well so hoping to book that in soon. How are you all feeling? Other than getting up to pee in the night and waking early I don't have any other symptoms.

Justyouwaitandsee · 02/11/2014 08:41

Hello! Glad to hear your weekend has gone well. It's so lovely telling people and your 12 week scan will be here before you know it.

I am feeling much, much better this week. Sickness seems to have finally passed, but I do still feel shattered by 2/3pm. I met up with a couple of old work colleagues for lunch yesterday which was nice while my DH went looking at sensible family cars.

Very sweet how he carefully described all the safety features on each! (A bit of a change from when we first go together!) His car when we met was a speedy sports, the next one he started thinking about fuel economy and this one he is talking safety Grin

That's really sweet of your DH to be sorting out the car. They all have their own way of showing how much they care! Just wanted to ask all the ladies how many weeks were you when you started feeling sick? Want to try to prepare myself (and put some plastic bags in the car!) if it's likely to hit me from 5+ weeks! Thanks Smile

Justyouwaitandsee · 02/11/2014 19:33

Hey, it's so different for everyone. I don't think Catnip has had any sickness, but I just checked back on my Ovia notes and I reported nausea and/or sickness from week 6. Seem to have got over it now, but still tired and have a hugely decreased appetite. Hope sickness passes you by!

OP posts:
Justyouwaitandsee · 02/11/2014 19:37

Ps. Don't think too much of DH's car hunting. It's his favourite pastime! But it is sweet how his priorities have changed.

Catnip - We went pram/buggy/car seat browsing today! So many things to think about!

OP posts:
catnip85 · 02/11/2014 19:58

I've been v lucky, no sickness at all but I started carrying a plastic bag from about wk 5 just in case I felt sick during my commute on the bus and some dry crackers- I found I got nauseous when overly hungry.

My DH also loves car hunting, were planning to get a new one early next year and he's already been browsing!

Justyouwait, there is so much choice with push chairs and travel systems its hard to know where to start isn't it?!

Justyouwaitandsee · 02/11/2014 20:45

Same here. The car isn't due to be replaced until Feb/March but he never really stops looking Grin

Looks like 'we need' at 4 wheel drive SUV this time. He justifies this by saying that he doesn't want to have difficulties getting to the hospital when I go into labour. Uh huh. < Nods knowingly >

Lovebugs2014 · 04/11/2014 10:44

So I've had a few head aches and mild tummy cramps but not feeling that pregnant which is weird. Work up with pins and needles in my left hand which is annoying as its still here now!

Justyouwaitandsee · 04/11/2014 12:53

I am 15 weeks today and apparently baby is the size of an avocado!

Funnily enough I don't feel pregnant either atm, no more sickness although am still feeling tired and struggle to focus at work. Live each day for returning home and climbing into bed! Smile

OP posts:
catnip85 · 04/11/2014 17:42

Amen to that! I cant wait to get home and into my pyjamas tonight. Any bumps appearing yet?

Justyouwaitandsee · 04/11/2014 17:48

I have a bit of a bump (more prominent in the evening) but still fit in all my usual day to day clothes (thank heavens for a lifetime love of comfy tunics and stretchy jeans!)

Ended up leaving early today as I had a head, neck and ear ache and my concentration was out the window anyway. Now collapsed on the sofa with a curry on order...

OP posts:
catnip85 · 04/11/2014 18:08

Ooh a curry would go down nicely this eve! I'm hoping DH will have cooked dinner by the time I get home... Wishful thinking I suspect. Have either of you told work yet?

Lovebugs2014 · 04/11/2014 20:54

I'm starting to wonder what's going on with me as I've only just realised I've been feeling cold/shivering recently which isn't like me, I also have a bruise on my wrist that I didn't have this morning and it doesn't hurt?? I got stuck in traffic this morning so missed my Dr's appointment and next is booked for week on Thursday...think I maybe need to get an earlier one booked as I'm worried it's my blood?! Sad

Justyouwaitandsee · 05/11/2014 07:19

Hey, try not to worry - as I said before, the symptoms are really strange. I had a shivery stage at about the same time - have two fleecy blankets which I ended up wrapping myself up in on the sofa and I even had to wear my thickest winter coat for a bit. Come to think of it, I have probably had more bruises than usual too.

Are you taking daily vitamins? You need to be taking something with Folic acid and vitamin D. Try to take something with iron in it as well (like pregnacare). Your blood volume increases and your body is working extra hard to create the placenta.

Make sure you take things slow and steady. Gets lots of rest and sleep. I had to completely give up on housework from around 6-10 wks, which is totally unlike me. I couldn't even do the basics like stack the dishwasher or put on a load of washing. You have to listen to your body and only do what you can manage. I also started going to bed earlier (was asleep by 8:30 last night) and I've also found myself needing afternoon naps from the very early stages.

And try to eat regularly and healthily. I am not usually a breakfast fan but I have been making myself eat something before leaving the house. Try to eat good carbs and green veg etc. I am also drinking lots of milk and fresh orange juice. Try to eat well now, because if sickness comes then you might find that you go off your food. Just take each day at a time, eat as healthy as you can manage or listen to any cravings which is your body telling you what it needs.

If you do feel you need to see a doctor, push for one. At my surgery, the policy is that your first appt is with the midwife at 8wks. At the moment everything you describe sounds normal to me, but if you would feel better for some extra reassurance then there is no harm in going to see someone before.

Hope this helps!

What do you do as a job Lovebugs? How flexible can you be? I have been catching a slightly later train and had a few days when I've left early. I tried not to take many days off in the early stages as I wasn't sure how long my tiredness/sickness would last but I did book a week of holiday at wk7 which was a godsend as I spent it sleeping or being sick. This was before I had told anyone. Not everyone gets sickness though so you might be lucky!

OP posts:
Lovebugs2014 · 05/11/2014 18:24

Thanks for your advice! I'm booked in with Dr on Tuesday so hopefully all is well, just wondered if my blood might be affected as I have had anemia in the past and know that there is a lot going on with increased blood and needing iron etc. I've been taking vitamins since May so should be getting all I need plus I have a very healthy diet having lost two stone a couple of years ago and vowed to keep it off. Just started a new role so very busy driving long distances which is very hard (done over 250 miles today!!) as I'm shattered so went to bed at 8 last night and slept through till 7 this morning! Not usually like me as I'm a night owl so haven't been in bed before 11pm in years. I know I need to slow down but it's hard when work don't know and I'm still balancing working 4 days a week and at uni on Fridays...I've booked an eay scan on Wednesday evening just to check its not ectopic etc so this I'll feel better when I have a bit more reassurance from the medical professionals that I'm normal! Grin

Justyouwaitandsee · 05/11/2014 19:00

Wow! That does sound tiring! You could perhaps consider telling work early if you need to. There is an expectation for employers to be flexible and my bosses have been brilliant.

My symptom of the week seems to be horrible headaches (which also affect my ears and neck) which hit mid afternoon. I also have a stuffy nose which bleeds really easily when I blow it. Luckily the Ovia app warned me this is a common symptom for wk15.

My DH is working a late shift tonight so I am curled up on the sofa trying to muster the energy to cook some food while looking after a terrified cat who hates fireworks Sad

Justyouwaitandsee · 06/11/2014 08:04

Hey everyone, I am feeling a bit pathetic today. Had another headache last night so took myself off for another early night. But it hasn't cleared and I still have a strange low level ache, plus tinnitus and feel dizzy/lightheaded and shaky. It's even making me feel a bit sick. Have just asked work if I can work from home but wish I didn't have to. Just can't really face the thought of a busy commute or a noisy office. Sad

OP posts:
Lovebugs2014 · 07/11/2014 13:59

Sorry to hear you haven't felt well Justyouwaitandsee, I'm getting more tired each day and have headaches too which I never normally have...just want to hibernate away somewhere warm, dark and quiet! Really don't want to tell anyone at work yet as word gets round quick and have only had my manager a few weeks so still getting to know him/trust etc....no way am I complaining in the grand scheme of things as I really do love being pregnant and will take whatever I have to for baby to be healthy Smile

Justyouwaitandsee · 07/11/2014 20:29

Thanks Lovebugs. Felt better today but then got drenched head to toe (and through to my underwear!) by a stupid car on my way into work. Had to return home to change by which point I was in such a state that I ran inside and threw up in the toilet. Then had to get completely changed before heading straight back out again. Not the best start but the rest of the day hasn't been so bad in comparison...Hmm

OP posts:
Lovebugs2014 · 09/11/2014 22:47

So now at 6weeks today and been feeling very tired all weekend and just started today to feel queezy and wanting to eat very salty things like crisps and fish fingers with lots of salt and vinagar! I have always had a sweet tooth but now can't face eating sweet things...not a bad thing as I'm trying to eat as healthy as I can stomach and not put on too much unnecessary weight! How are you all feeling?

catnip85 · 10/11/2014 07:18

I haven't been getting notifications for this thread so sorry I've been absent ladies!

And sorry to hear you've both been having a horrible time, sending hugs to you both. I've been getting nosebleeds too and def craving salty rather than sweet stuff. I think the tiredness is gradually starting to lift but still feel like the walking dead most mornings.

250miles a day lovebugs!!!? That's quite a feat, make sure you don't drive if yr feeling too awful- better to be safe than risk an accident. Is there anyway you could catch the train a few days instead?

I pretty much abandoned cleaning and housework from wk6, only just getting back to it. Luckily DH has been super helpful round the house.

Justyouwait have you got the app for yr 20wk scan yet? I havent received mine yet

catnip85 · 10/11/2014 07:23

Also, have either of you been feeling a bit teary? I'm not the crying sort but the weirdest things are setting me off: I had to switch over the tv on sunday when I saw war widows walking to the cenotaph. DH came in and found me bawling my eyes out because matt baker was walking some mules around a field on countryfile in a WW1 reenactment last night!

Lovebugs2014 · 10/11/2014 08:08

Hi catnip! The mammoth drive was a one off but still having a long commute to work and doing driving during the day for my job...just started this morning to feel really sick and have been retching but thankfully nothing in my stomach to come up! Just managed a piece of toast so will see how that goes. Really hope the sickness doesn't get too bad as I'm worried about getting to work, doing my job and being able to study in between! Got a private scan on Wednesday to check is ok so focussing on that at the mo Smile
