For those of us due February 2007 and moving from the first to the second trimester ...

We've made it this far - only another 6 months to go! (Gulp!)

I'm struggling to keep up with this thread too... hello to any newcomers .

Sorky, hope the chat goes well.

Glad things are OK Julezboo - maybe not much help but I know of quite a few women who have spotted throughout

Currantbun - I think that I'm right in thinking that it is your legal right to give birth at home if you want to, as long as a midwife is present. I would think that the birth centre would be the same. They can't force you to give birth in hospital if you don't want to. I think you might just have to stick to your guns. There's info about all this on www.birthchoiceuk.org website. A fab site that gives loads of stats on hospitals etc.

Babydriver, I agree completely about the active birth. With DS, I was in labour without realising (not as good as it sounds... I had been in false labour for days...) and because I didn't think that it was real, I jsut got on with it. Pacing around and panting. I was 6/7cm when I went to hospital (to get something to stop the painful braxton hicks lol!) and even then I went for a walk and on the gym ball. I then went in the pool and rocked until 9cm. then meconium in my waters meant I was strapped to a monitor and put on my back. Things became slow and much more painful, and definately a tricky position to birth from. This time it'll be standing or on all fours all the way for me if possible! At home ideally...

Just an update
We didn't get much time to chat last night, between visitors and the phone, our house was like Picadilly (?sp).
Dh won't give his thoughts on the mater until a couple of days from now, but I suspected as much. He won't say anything just for the sake of it, he'll want his points to be thoroughly considered before stating them.
After some meditation and Reiki, I started to unravel everything and will continue to do so over the next couple of days as well. All I know after some peaceful time was that the baby is the same regardless and I already love it immensely . I don't see that changing regardless so to go poking about serves little purpose for me. Sorry if that's not very eloquently put.
Hope everyone's ok
btw Dh's gran has a tumour , she's 89 and has to have a hysterectomy

CurrantBun · 24/08/2006 11:49

(((Sorky))) Sounds like you have a lot on your plate at the moment. Your DH sounds a bit like mine - he likes to consider things carefully. In some ways it's good because I always know I'm getting an honest, thought-out opinion, but sometimes it's frustrating because I like to just offload my thoughts, in whatever order, and then make sense of them all afterwards. That's why I like to run - it always helps me organise my thoughts and clear my head.

Suzi2, yes, that's my understanding too. If I have to fight for it I will - but if I can get everyone onside in the first place it will all be a lot easier and less stressful. Thanks for the link, BTW - looks very helpful.

Can't believe I'll be 14 weeks on Monday - still don't show at all! My tummy is very slightly rounded now rather than flat, but even DH said I'd be pushing it to call it a 'bump'! On the plus side, it means all my clothes still fit fine - even my jeans - so don't need to look at maternity things for a while. Quite pleased about this as by the time the baby arrives I'm sure I'll be sick of the sight of my limited maternity wardrobe!

Just popping in from March thread to say hello again

I can't keep up either, with all the posts, but special hello to Mrs JC and Julez - I had bleeding too, with DD. Lasted about 3 weeks and turned out to be erosion of the cervix, but was extremely worrying at the time. I'm glad your scans were good, its such a relief isn't it? I used to look for blood each time I went to the loo but DD was fine and in fact still do look for that treacherous blood, in this pregnancy, though have had no bleeding so far this time round.

Mrs JC - hoping to meet you at Suejonez on 31st.

Take care

Spanna · 24/08/2006 14:11

Query: What is the 16 week check up? I am 15+4 and have nothing booked till my 20 week scan. I assume it is for the blood test for Downs/spina bifida. I cannot decide what to do about this test. I think I won't have it.

I had it for my previous 2 and thankfully got a low risk result. But I know this time that my age (37) would give me a highish risk anyway, and that I do not think I would opt for amnio (due to the risk of mc) or a termination (as there are far worse problems than Downs and spina bifida which they do not test for).

On the one hand it would be nice to have the peace of mind of a low risk result, but on the other I do not think I would act on a high risk result (my friend is in this exact situation). We did not opt for the Nuchal Fold test on the grounds of cost, and I beleive it is too late now.

Any comments or suggestions welcome!

shhhh · 24/08/2006 15:44

Well I think it's about time I added myself to this thread..!

Due to mc history I have been quite wary about getting "attached iykwim".

Anyway my due date is 31/01/07 BUT I have also been given 01/02/07 so thought I would come onto this one...Shame really I am either the last due on a thread or the 1st due on a thread lol.!

This will be my 2nd baby and I'm currently 17 +2 weeks. I am doing ok but feeling sick still. Also with it being my 2nd I am huge..! Its drives me mad as well people commenting "You are huge oh are you sure its not twins" grrrrr......

So.............sshhh how did todays scan go...? Im intrigued to know who you are..!! Come on I have been waiting a week now .

BTW everyone I AM the original shhhh ..!!!

sorkycake · 24/08/2006 16:54

Man, that's far too confusing , we're all pg you know!
Will the Sshhh please step forward, tell us about her scan today and reveal herself with a flourish?

julezboo · 24/08/2006 17:44

two shhh's this is gonna get confusing LOL

Feeling poop today think I have the flu!

love to all

julie 14+3

suzi2 · 24/08/2006 19:44

My preggie brain can not handle two ssssshshhhhhhs....! I think that sshhh should reveal her true identity. So far, we know she's Scottish...

shhhh · 24/08/2006 19:47

I agree..!!! I even confussed myself on a thread we were both on last week...I thought " I know Im pregnant but why can't I recall typing that message"..! .

sshhh (2 s's and 3 h's ) said she was incognito and would reveal all once she'd had her scan.

BTW sshhh, I hope all has gone well today..Sending positive thoughts xx

sshhh · 24/08/2006 20:31

well, i thought my ears were burning!!

scan today showed a healthy wee bean with heart beating away. so, alas, this is my last post as sshhh. from now on i'll be myself, allow me to re-introduce myself, ja9.

Anjo1 · 24/08/2006 20:43

hello!!
Another newbie here !! ( in everysense of the word) love the chat !
I'm 15wks+4( due date 11/02/06 ) and don't look preg at all !!I've totally got bump envy and keep looking at other people's bumps !!keep waiting to feel the baby move as well and worried I'll miss it because I've had really bad tummy pain with a lot of bloating and wind since becoming preg
Sorkycake -just for the record I have a choccy fireguard for a midwife as well who does seem to want me out of there asap.
hope everyone is feeling okay today !

Anjo1 · 24/08/2006 20:53

oops meant 11/02/07!!

titchy77 · 24/08/2006 21:20

hi all
can anyone tell me if they know if dopplers are safe to use, i was using mine nearly every day gron 9 weeks but then dp dad said are you sure there safe to use, so i'm trying not to use it so much.
it does put my mind at rest but i dont want to continue using it if it harms the baby in any way??does anyone know what damage it can cause??thanks.xxx

babydrivertoo · 24/08/2006 21:29

well here I am looking at MN in the evening in my own time!! I managed to get the broadband connection sorted all by myself!

yet more newbies - welcome. shhhh, I'm due pretty much the same time as you - and dates differ by a day or two slightly depending on who I talk to. And I'm pretty big too, and had the "are you sure it's not twins" conversation at work today grrrr. Still, at least I have had seats offered to me twice on the tube in the last week so there are some benefits!

titchy can't help on doppler I'm afraid, but I expect you'll be feeling the baby pretty soon if you haven't already, so that might mean you feel less need of the doppler anyway.

take care all.xxx

shhhh · 25/08/2006 10:34

hi babydriver! Yes it is annoying having people stare at your pregnant tummy and comment, I just worry how big I'm going to get as with dd I was HUGE esp at the end and I feel im the size now as I was at 9 months with her lol..!!!

As long as baby stays there for the next 5 months then hey ho..!

Hi ja9..so we have been posting on the same threads with you as ja9 and I didn't even know..! Ah the beauty of nicknames on mn...! Glad all has gone well and congrats.

Welcome anjo1. Titchy77, I didn't think there would be a problem with dopplers...I know scans have not be proven to cause/not to cause any harm so some are cautious with how many scans they had BUT dopplers are just a sounds machine..?? They don't omit harmful rays etc do they..??
Is it just not your dp dad coming up with "useful" advice as our parents and pil do at times like these..?!!

Anjo1 · 25/08/2006 18:39

hi everyone ,hope it's been a good day all round !
Maybe wanting a bump is a first timers thing , I've been told I should be glad I'm not showing yet . I think it's just that the lack of any sign of my pregnancy makes me feel anxious because I can't feel the baby yet and I can't hear the baby ( I've never heard the baby's heart beat ) and I just want some sign that it's there and it's growing . Anyone else have the same worries or am I just being ridiculous ?

teabags · 25/08/2006 18:48

Hi all, been ages since I posted as I had internet problems. I remember feeling the same as you Anjo with my previous pregnancy, don't worry you will get a bump eventually!

I am 14 weeks with baby no.2 and fed up with people telling me how big I am and being told it's because I have slack muscles now!!

I had my nuchal scan and was told the baby was high risk for Downs Syndrome. I was devastated and felt I really needed to know as I didn't want to worry all through my pregnancy. I had a CVS done and results all came back clear which was such a relief.

Loving the 2nd trimester! Much better now I'm over the tiredness!

Anjo1 · 25/08/2006 19:43

Hi Teabags, fab news about the CVS results- really happy for you !!

I'm currently waiting for results for the Downs Syndrome and Spina Bifida blood tests- trying not to think too much about it . Just hope it's all good .
Just checked messages on the phone and my MW has left one saying i'm anaemic so have to get started on the Iron tablets I guess .he ho fun and games !one more thing to worry about ! and here I was thinking the Second Trimester was all about blooming !!

N1SEXYTING · 26/08/2006 09:34

Hi ladies

Got my letter from the UCH confirming that my baby's risk is 1:27,000. Me and my BF are sorting things out so I'm on a real high at the moment.

Still no bump! But have been shopping for maternity bra on ebay also been looking at stuff for the baby and have seen some really good deals but keep thinking its too early to start buying things right?

teabags · 26/08/2006 11:00

Anjo I take a liquid iron formula called Floradix which was recommended to me by my midwife when I was preg before(you can get it in Boots and some Sainsburys). It is better than tablets as it doesn't constipate you and is absorbed much quicker by the body.

N1, fab news re: your UCH . I guess it's never too soon to start buying baby things especially if you see a good bargain. Is this your 1st? We bought essential pieces of equipment with my previous pregnancy but only one oufit for the baby and by he time DS arrived we had been given so many clothes as gifts he didn't go short!

suzi2 · 26/08/2006 15:20

Gosh this thread is fast moving! sshhh or ja9 glad to see your real name. I don't think I've posted alongside you at all anywhere though.

Welcome anjo1. With my DS I was desperate for a bump and constantly worried. I started sprouting one about 18-20 wks. Even at 24wks I was worried it was too small and called the mw out on a Sunday I always measured a touch small but everything was fine (DS was an ounce off 8lbs at 40wks). Please try not to worry. With this being my second, I thought I'd be showing by now. But I only have the slightest firmness in my lower tummy. Be proud of your good tummy muscles!

Titchy - dopplers... with DS I did a lot of reading and reserach into this. Basically, no can prove they are completely safe, but there is little evidence to suggest they are not. They use ultrasound waves but at a much lower frequency than scans (I think!). Ultrasound waves can modify things in the brain, but this is not generally thought to happen with either scans or dopplers. There are reports that suggest an increased incidence of left handedness in babies with frequent scans - left handedness means a higher chance of learning difficulties apparently. So some suggest that dopplers may be the same. I would say to use it with some caution. I am comfortable enough with their safety to use mine daily. But never for more than a minute or two. With DS I didn't use it much when the proper kicks started although I used it a lot the last few weeks as I had several scares.

N1 & teabags - nice to know you got good results.

I'm getting the double test on Tuesday. I had a bit of a fight with the mw as I told her that regardless of the result, I wouldn't have amnio. She said there was no point in taking it. But as I said... I could then get my detailed scan pulled forward to look for indicators of either condition. She just gave me a look! I prefer to have the full info and then make the decisions.

teabags · 26/08/2006 17:50

Suzi2 - I'm finding it interesting how different health authorities work, in particular re: amnio etc. I was never offered blood tests. I asked and was told no. I also think it does matter even if you don't have the amnio, as surely what you want is knowledge and as much as you can get

I had a detailed scan following the nuchal which didn't clarify anything for me but the sonographer was great to talk to when I was deciding what to do next and calmed my fears.

suzi2 · 26/08/2006 19:27

teabags - it's quite shocking the different tests etc offered in different areas. We aren't offered the nuchal in this area - nor most of Scotland as far as I know. So it's the double or nothing...

shhhh · 27/08/2006 17:41

Glad everyone is doing well.
Anjo1, don't get me wrong although I hate others comments on my growing bump I also love it as it's a sign all is well. BUT even though I have this reasurrance I do still worry..daily.!! Following x2 mc's I was exactly the same with dd. I suppose it's just fear of the unknown.

Whats occupying my brain atm is the birth . I know I coped well last time it still scares the hell out of me..anyone else.? Any tips on how to chill.? I'm still suffering pnd following dd's birth (well antenatal depression as it's being called now) so this doesn't help. "My Cup is always half empty ".

We to are also waiting results from alphabet test although we were told approx 7 days..and that was last mon..fingers crossed..Worry after another..!!! Oh top of that a 15 month old to worry about..! Arrgghhhh...................!
