For those of us due February 2007 and moving from the first to the second trimester ...

We've made it this far - only another 6 months to go! (Gulp!)

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
suzi2 · 27/08/2006 19:03

shhh - I'm the opposite, I'm really excited about the birth and looking forward to it! Post DS and this pregnancy have given me some amount of rosy tinted lenses about it all. A friend recently gave birth and things were trickt (far trickier than DS) and she wass also having breastfeeding troubles. I told her that I had no real trouble with birth and feeding DS... then my DH reminded me that I was in labour for hours, pushing for hours (and they fiddled the times on the book to avoid foreceps!) and then had cracked bleeding nipples and nipple thrush. I seem to have blanked it all!

I can identify with the cup half empty thing - I suffered from depression (before DS, not AND or PND) and know that feeling. I often feel the same now but not so bad. Hormones have a lot to answer for I think, they certainly don't help things.

babydrivertoo · 27/08/2006 21:06

hi folks. shhhh and suzy2 I think I'm flip flopping between the two of you about birth. Part of me thinks, well I got thru a long and at times hard labour reasonably well last time and I've been able to reflect on it and decide what I want to do differently if I can, so it should be better. And then I think OMG it was bloody hard work and I did all sorts last time to try and make sure it wasn't and it still was, so maybe it will be again!

shhhh, I really hope you find something that helps, at least to have one less thing to worry about. FWIW I had a particular fear of the birth last time round and went to see a hypnotherapist who talked to me to help me understand what my fears were and made me a lovely, reassuring, personalised tape that I listened to a lot. This time I've been pondering hypnobirthing but can't decide. I've also heard that there are specific homeoepathic remedies that can help with anxiety but you'd have to see a homoeopath to help decide which. (I don't knit lentils, honestly, just have an open mind about alternative medicine...)

BTW, went to my first pg yoga class on Sat - was great, really good stretching and also v relaxing, floated home - where reality naturally hit again but it was nice for a while!

Enjoy the BH everyone!

suzi2 · 27/08/2006 21:08

lol I saw BH there and instantly thought Braxton Hicks! Forgot it was the bank holiday weekend - DH works it so won't make much difference to me, except my favourite tea room might be too busy!

ChaCha · 27/08/2006 22:25

Hi girls,

Hope you remember me. Haven't been on for a while. How is everyone? Any chance of an update? As for me still being sick after almost every meal but managing much better than i did first time round - guess that's because i have to.
Mrs JC - How's the move going? How's Bunny and everyone else - an update would be great! I've missed so much on here and the post natal thread lately...

My baby is kicking after 10pm every night heehee
17weeks

shanks313 · 28/08/2006 21:35

Hi everyone

Good to hear some of you are feeling little babes moving I cant wait for that to happen.

My sickness is starting to die down and seem to be feeling a little more awake now.

Is anybody else getting the feeling in their bladder like they constantly need to pee? I dont know if its nomal or if the urine infections returned.

CurrantBun · 29/08/2006 11:03

Hope everyone had a good bank holiday weekend.

We went to Wales to stay with the in-laws. It was lovely (I do get on really well with them) and good to get out into clean country air. Managed a 6-mile, rather hilly run on Sunday which was wonderful - I didn't suffer from fatigue in the first trimester, but now I'm into the second I feel literally bursting with energy. I will enjoy it while it lasts!

I have no real sign of a bump yet; my 'normal' clothes are still quite loose. I took the opportunity of being at my in-laws to weigh myself (we don't have any scales at home) - since 12th June, when I last weighed myself there (before I knew I was pregnant) I have gained a whopping half a pound!! Had hoped it would be more so that I could argue my case for a midwife-led/home birth more convincingly when I see the consultant on 11th, but I guess I'll just have to put rocks in my pockets! Apparently it's quite normal to gain very little/nothing in the first trimester.

Hope you're all well and welcome to any newcomers.

14 weeks today!

shhhh · 29/08/2006 12:28

about the movement thing with baby..is anyone around 18 weeks (like me) and hasn't felt baby kick yet..?? With dd it was around this time but as of yet I am still to feel it..quite worrying in fact.

I'm heavier than with dd so maybe there is more for dc2 to kick through iykwim...

Hope everyone is ok.

sallyn · 29/08/2006 13:26

sshhh, I am so relieved to read that you haven't felt anything yet either. I am new to Mumsnet, new to pregnancy and new to this thread. I am 17 weeks 3 days (due Feb 3), and feel so normal it's worrying. Some days I don't think I can even see a belly bulge, although DP reassures me I'm looking suitably hefty around the middle! I just welcome every twinge as it's proof there is something going on. Anyway, I was on the verge of ringing my midwife today to see what she thought, but I think you might have saved me the embarrassment. So thank you. Hope this might reassure you a bit too. x

peachygirl · 29/08/2006 15:29

Hi everyone, especially all the new ladies. I've been on holiday for 2 weeks and seem to have missed lots!! there has been some really good scan news so congrats to those people
I've tried to have a catch up on the new thread. I'm 15 weeks today. The flights don't seem to have affected me or the baby (well at least I have not seen anything that indicates things aren't going as they should) although I am very jetlagged and it will be worse tomorrow I'm sure.
I've had several more symptoms while away, real hungryness in the mornings and smells , well phewee, things have been smelling really strongly, especially starbucks coffee shops!!
We bought a couple of baby bits (T shirt / babygro and hat). We visitied lots of places and I'll bore you with the details another time but we did have a photo taken on the set of 'Central Perk' in friends at the warner bros studios which I migh post in member profiles.
love to all!

sorkycake · 29/08/2006 15:57

Sallyn it's quite normal to not look very pg at all until about 20weeks. There are some of us on the thread who're having 2nd or 3rd babies and whilst we might once have had flat stomach's we don't anymore, hence the showing rather earlier than many of us expected to.
The fetal movements are felt earlier with subsequent pg's too, this is my 3rd and so I knew what to expect in terms of the baby moving. IIRC I don't recall feeling anything until 20weeks with my 1st. Please don't worry I'm sure everything is fine

sallyn · 29/08/2006 16:35

Thanks for that sorkycake. I'm sure you're right and it's just worrywaves. Can't wait to get to 20 weeks - wish there was a microwave setting on this process! Patience, patience.

On another subject, do any of you know/have opinions on the Vitamin K injection/oral treatment they recommend for babies? I have a permission form I'm supposed to fill in. Is it safe etc.?

suzi2 · 29/08/2006 19:42

sshhh, with DS I didn't feel anything until 20wks. But someone on my AN club didn't feel anything... at all! Bizarre! It was to do with the position of the placenta. I wouldn't worry.

Sallyn, I was 18-20wks at least before anyone could tell I was pg when I had DS. Even then, I didn't have an obvious "I'M NOT JUST FAT" bump until 24wks + and was still 'neat'.

Currantbun, with DS I didn't put on a pound until 18wks. And then I managed to put on a whopping 3 stone in the following 22wks! Mostly fluid.

Peachy glad you had a good holiday. I'm still feeling a bit icky at times and also have super sensitive sense of smell.

I had my bloods done for the AFP today. Had a brief chat with the mw about homebirth and am feeling more sure than ever about it. My dad isn't keen though for reasons better known to himself.

TuttiFrutti · 29/08/2006 21:12

For me, the baby's movements seem to depend on the time of day. It's pretty quiet during the day, but in the evening it starts to rev up and when I'm lying in bed at night I can feel it really moving about a lot. I'm 15 weeks now but have been able to feel it move at night for several weeks.

Is there anyone else whose bump is HUGE already? I can't do lunges in the gym because me knees hit my bump as soon as I even slightly bend down! People keep asking me when it's due and looking shocked when I say February.

Sallyn, I think there's been lots of research done on the vitamin K injection and it is safe. That's just my memories from looking into it during my first pregnancy - we consented for ds and he had the injection shortly after he was born, with no ill effects.

suzi2 · 29/08/2006 21:32

the vitamin K thing - I researched it last pregnancy and can't for the life of me remember the ins and outs of it. I concluded though that the benefits far outweigh the risk and DS got the injection. Will be doing the same this time.

CurrantBun · 30/08/2006 09:50

Suzi - yikes, three stone???!!! I will look like a Weeble if I put on that much weight. If I lay on my back I'll be stuck there until someone helps me up! I was horrified to read that for women who were "underweight" pre-pregnancy (I refuse to put myself in this category despite my BMI, as to look at I'm clearly healthy and not scrawny!) the recommended weight gain is 3 stone! My GP told me I only needed to gain 10-12kg so I will be ignoring anyone who tells me otherwise!

I'm also veering more and more towards home birth. Although the hospital can refuse to accept me for a midwife-led birth in the bith centre (due to low BMI) I assume that they can't refuse to allow me a home birth if that's what I choose - my right to have the birth of my choice?

Just don't want to end up in a brightly-lit room with scary-looking equipment everywhere, invariably lying flat on my back with my knees up so that doctors/midwives can 'see' better.

wickymum · 30/08/2006 11:08

Hi All, Sallyn - I didn't feel my 1st baby move until the very end of week 19. I had a panick attack as I kept getting told I was very small, went to see my midwife in a blubbering mess, heard the heart beat and that evening felt a very firm kick.

This is my second pregnancy (17+0) and have felt slight movemment from the baby. I only know its my baby from being pregnant before. This pregnancy I am being told I am rather large. I look about 20/21 weeks.

I'm all for a hospital birth. Like to know everything is there if I need it. First labour was not great.

I put on 5 pouns in first trimester. Still being sick, past couple of mornings technicolour yawning!!! hope it stops soon.

Babycheese - how are you getting on?

TuttiFrutti · 30/08/2006 14:08

Currantbun, I put on FOUR stone last pregnancy! Three sounds quite lightweight to me - although I'm trying hard not to put on so much weight this time.

Have you been on a tour of your local hospital? A lot of them now have special "home from home" rooms that are a good halfway house between home birth and hospitial - really homely environments with dimmed lighting, TVs, CD players etc - like good hotel rooms really.

shhhh · 30/08/2006 14:59

sallyn, thats reasurred me for now..!

About the vitk jab..dd had it as like others the pro's outweighed the cons iykwim. BTW if baby was to be born prem scbu will give baby the vitk jab anyway..with that in mind dh & I decided it must be worth having.

All these choices to make and this is before baby arrives. Just wait till you have the mmr to contend with..! .

sorkycake · 30/08/2006 17:06

I only gained 20lbs with both of mine! I thought that was plenty tbh. What are they gonna do CB force you to eat?, just ignore them. Actually that's general good advice for any child related service ime, esp HV, hehe!
My bump is making it difficult to tie my shoes already, eek!
I don't remember the injection, but we did have to administer vials of something to Dd when we brought her home. Dh seems to think that was the Vit K. I don't remember anything about Ds's life until he was about 9mo so he might have had it, or not. They were so close together in age, my head was befuddled just getting up in the morning

suzi2 · 30/08/2006 19:31

Currantbun don't joke about the getting stuck lying down thing! I'm hyperflexible so can get myself out of most positions, but at about 28wks I sat in a low, leaning back chair in IKEA and was totally stuck. Highly embarrassing! You're right about the homebirth. You have the right to have the birth of your choice.

The hospital I was at I started in one of the homely rooms in the birthing pool. I never felt that it was very private though as anyone could walk in at any time. And the worst thing was hearing the girl in the next room in the last moments of labour - it truly terrified DH and I. We thought she was being murdered I had old meconium in my waters when they went at 9cm during an exam so I was transferredto obstetrics - cue bright lights, on back, slowing labour, monitoring, fear etc. I spoke to the mw about this yesterday and she said that I should have been allowed to stay upright and active while being monitored so it's worth remembering this. She also said that if during a homebirth there was old meconium aat 9cm they would be unlikely to want to transfer you to hospital but would monitor you.

wicky hope you feel better soon. I still have 'icky' days but on the whole it's clearing I think.

Sorky I completely agree with the ignoring HVs! I kow what you mean about not remembering things. I don't remember DS getting it but my DH does. I don't remember much to do with labour to now to be honest! Like the age old question... when did my knickers come off in labour???

cadbury · 30/08/2006 19:48

hello all,

doing ok here - I'm running out of clothes that fit me and know I'm going to have an awful time finding clothes to fit me in late pregnancy as I'm a size 22-24 normally. Have got out everything I own with an elasticated waist band already! I'm finding sleeping a bit of a problem at the moment - getting comfortable to get to sleep takes a while, but then I wake up in the night (often needing the loo still) and can't get back to sleep because anxiety sets in - not to do with the baby particuarly, its things like th dripping noise on the ceiling and the gas bill they've over-charged us for. I work myself into such a stew that its affecting my digestive system and I'm getting all knotted up and clogged up too (sorry for tmi). Wish I could just switch off but this is getting silly. I'm waking up exhausted after just a few hours sleep. Is anyone else getting over anxious?

I feel baby moving every so often and the bump is definitely getting higher. My week by week pregnancy book says the fundus should be about an inch to 2 inches below my navel now (17 + 1) but it's right up to my navel already! Hope this doesn't mean this is a particualrly enormous baby!

Vitamin K jab - both of mine had this as an injection and it didn't upset them. I did think about my dd having it orally but that meant coming back into the hospitl for a few doses (IIRC) a few weeks aprt - didn't fancy that.

Tommy · 30/08/2006 20:05

hello all - had another scarey moment today as I had another bleed and my tummy felt achey all morning - sort of heavy. I phoned the MW and she came round and listened for the heartbeat which was all fine.
It's all a bit of a worry though and I hope it settles down soon.
I have definite (small) bump but I get to this time of day and I have to take off my bra (still haven't been measured for new one -next week whe I have some time!) and undo my trousers - a very classy look as you can imagine.

DrJo · 31/08/2006 09:34

Anyone know what the facilities at the York hospital are like. I'm new to the area. My DS was born in West Sussex where they did a tour of the labour ward as part of the AN classes. They also provided cotton nappies, which was great. York apparently doesn't do tours and I'm definitely down for a hospital birth due to an emergency CS last time

suzi2 · 31/08/2006 09:48

DrJo - www.birthchoiceuk.com (or .org?) will have some details.
