Hi all,
just wondering if any of you have been getting any period like pain??i have been getting it on and off since friday afternoon and now i'm worring a bit as had a missed m/c last year. am 14+3. thanks.xxx

TuttiFrutti · 20/08/2006 11:53

Nisexting and Tommy, don't make the mistake I made last time and buy maternity (non-breastfeeding) bras now, or you may have to buy the same size later in breast-feeding style. My size didn't change from now till the birth. I've just bought a couple of feeding bras now, and will wear them as maternity bras till the baby arrives.

suzi2 · 20/08/2006 13:18

Titchy, I have them again. I remember having them a fair bit in the 2nd trimester with DS - I think it's because the growth spurt is huge so everythings getting stretched and squashed. They shouldn't be unbearable though - just niggly I guess.

titchy77 · 20/08/2006 13:28

thanks suzi, there not unbearable but feel exactly like period pains!!

suzi2 · 20/08/2006 13:30

hi titchy - I found a lot of my period like discomfort was bowel/intestine stuff too. I think ti's cos they were being squashed. TMI, but if I went for a poo it would often ease a bit!

MaybeBaba · 20/08/2006 21:42

Well I bought some prune juice today - the cheap tesco version as the sunsweet one was twice the price! It tastes vile but i it gets my bowels working then...

Spent lovely afternoon with dd (4.5) making gingerbread men and ladies - even though I would have liked to crash on the couch! Was out thursday at friends (until 11) and at a party until one fri night, so I think it has all caught up with me! Got to phone for NT scan results tomorrow so wish me luck and I will report back!

maazaa · 20/08/2006 23:12

Hello Everyone

Hello Fatfox - do feel free to frequent our thread!

Good luck, Maybebaba for tomorrow's results. Let us know how you get on.

Titchy - I get the odd twinge. Would it be worth getting your EPU to have a quick scan or the midwife to do a doppler, just to put your mind at rest? I'm really regretting that our scan was so early - I want another one!

The worst twinge though is if I swing my legs out of bed in a hurry and my groin kills! Anyone else get that?

Tommy - I agree that you should try and make use of your old bras, but I would definately get measured by a professional. Mothercare did me (boy was I waaaaay out - a shocking 38G, which come in a special box labelled "HAMMOCKS") and I don't think I could have got it so accurate. After she measured me, she left me to browse (which was also my experience in John Lewis pre wedding) so I could have easily sloped off without purchase.

Rubyandbeans - what does the BPD in the 2.5 cms context mean? I've been reading that my King Prawn should be approx 3-3.5 cms from head to rump. What's the rump? Is that the bum? How much do add for little bean legs?

Finally, a question for you all. Since nausea (or persistent hangover with sea sickness feeling) has gone, my bump has got bigger, rounder and doesn't crease in the middle like my spare tyre used to. Does this now mean I shouldn't lie on my front in bed? To be honest, it's uncomfortable, but is my natural sleeping position and I wake up in the night and panic I have squashed the little bub. I know I shouldn't moan now as it'll only get worse as it gets bigger, but i just can't sleep. Should I get one of those sausage pillows yet? Or strap a hairbrush to myself to wake myself up if I roll over ?

Rubyandbeansmummy · 21/08/2006 08:41

Hi everyone
Maazaa - 2.5cms bpd is the diamater of the top of the head! We were a bit suprised but apparently thats right. They don't do Crown rump (bum!) Length after 14 weeks because apparently its not accurate when the baby gets bigger because they get more flexed up. The length (not crl) is about 14cm and weight 110g at 14 wks apparently!

Its a heck of a lot bigger than I expected :-)

FWIW i slept on my front in 1st preg til it got too uncomfortable and was fine - and i have whiplash problems so i can;t sleep on my right hand side so the whole 'don;t sleep on your left' thing is rubbish too IMO!! My dd is fine anyway :-)

Sauasge pillows are great though when the bump gets bigger and you want your legs bump width apart - but a pillow between the knees is just as good for that esp early on :-) HTH

wickymum · 21/08/2006 09:55

Thanks all for the dizzyness messages. Sorry I only get to read and post at work.

I did phone the midwife who recommended rest and not to be on my own. Have not had any more since last Thurs, although I did feel light headed on Saturday. I have a blood pressure monitor which indicated my blood pressure was slightly low, so that explained the light headedness. I have my 16 week check this Thurs with the doctor so I think I will mention it all then.

soundbites · 21/08/2006 10:11

Hello all

Relieved to hear of others with the niggly period-like tummy pains as I have had them a few days now and was trying not to fret. My tummy does appear to be expanding at quite an alarming rate (I bought some more maternity trousers on Saturday just to give me a bit more comfort, not that I am really big enough to fill them!) and DH was saying he was sure that all it was was my body having to stretch to accommodate the changes which has been backed up by what Suzi says. I'll be 17 weeks on Thursday so maybe it is all about right.

Oh, letter arrived on Sat calling me for the next scan on 26 Sept. I'll be almost 22 weeks then. DH is on a conference then and we are both determined he must be there so he is going to try to get out of it - if he doesn't succeed we might need to change the scan date. Hope not as it will only be even later.

Have a good week xxx

soundbites · 21/08/2006 10:16

P.S. seeing the midwife on Wednesday - the 16 week(ish) appointment. Does anyone know what happens then? I guess she might go through the results of the bloods / urine test from the first scan. Would be nice if she were to listen to the heartbeat ....

Tommy · 21/08/2006 11:00

Had a MW appointment this morning - I am 13 weeks now. She gave results of blood tests (all fine) a urine test (was a little anxious that there was some glucose in it but then it seemed to be ok) and listened to baby's heartbeat which was doing exactly what it was supposed to!
She came round to the house which, in theory, is a good idea but not very relaxing with the DSs dashing around and asking me to do things. I have a 20 week scan booked for 2 October.
Trousers also getting a bit tight round here as well so have dug out my "fat" (pre Slimming World) trousers which will be find before I go into the maternity ones!

julezboo · 21/08/2006 11:46

Morning all

How was everyones weekend. I had a very tearful day yesterday, god knows why, but i cried for 4 hours yesterday morning.

14 weeks today and relieved to hear im not the only on experiencing mild cramps. Sickness is still there in the mornings but goes for the afternoon now thankfully.

Got another appt through the post for cons one for 6th sept, one for 11 oct. 20 week scan is booked for 5th oct and 4d scan is booked for 9th sept!

How is everyone doing??

jellyplate · 21/08/2006 13:42

Hey everyone,
Oh my god what madness - how do you all keep up with each other!!!!

Hi babydriver - i too am glad to hear that somone else has a large bump. People can't believe it when i tell them that i'm only four months and they tell me how uncomfortable i'm going to get - NOT what i want to hear!

sorkycake · 21/08/2006 15:14

Had a horrid weekend including a fight with dh to top it off . We very rarely row and neither of us won (one of those ones) nor can either of us remember what it was really about. Needless to say, everyone was grumpy.
Belly is huge and I think my stomach muscles have officially left for good. Even the Pilates isn't keeping everything in place. Haven't done many pelvic floor ex's either.
I swear when this baby is born there'll be nothing to keep anything in, one sneeze and that's it, I'll be scooping everything back up lol.
I too would recommend getting nursing bra's rather than maternity, just in case you decide to bf.
Got everything out of the loft and have started washing it all, only need to buy a new mattress for the cotbed, nursing bra's, retrieve things other people have borrowed and decorate the kids bedroom, then we're all set.
I have my 16 week appt on Wed and can't remember what to expect but I don't imagine it'll be much.
Take care everyone, hope you're all well.

CurrantBun · 21/08/2006 15:46

Maazaa, I used to be a tummy sleeper too and I really miss it! I had to stop pretty much as soon as I got pregnant because my boobs were rather tender and lying on them hurt! I'm getting used to sleeping on my side but I do miss being able to lie on my tummy.

Tommy, midwife told me this morning I shouldn't be wearing underwired bras. To be honest, I'm ignoring that for the moment. My normal bras still fit me fine and until they get too tight I'm not prepared to go and spend money on new ones that may only last a few weeks (I'm 13 weeks today). I've read elsewhere that it's fine to wear underwired bras in pregnancy as long as they fit properly and the underwiring doesn't chafe or cut in to the breast tissue. Mine are comfortable so I'm carrying on with them for now.

Had my booking-in appointment with the midwife this morning. She came to our house, which was great, although a little weird sitting at the kitchen table having blood drawn from my arm! Hubby took the morning off to attend the appointment with me, but to be honest he needn't have done as she didn't really ask him anything - certainly nothing I wouldn't have known! Still, it was nice to have him there. I ticked all the right boxes for a midwife-led birthing centre or home birth, which is what I want - all very low risk - except for the small matter of my BMI. I'm very petite with low body fat (I'm a runner and do a lot of marathons etc.) and the birth centre won't accept a BMI lower than 18.5. Mine is 18. This means that the midwife has had to refer me to the consultant (dictated by protocol) for a second opinion. Midwife is convinced it will only be a formality as everything else in my medical history is low risk, and it's obvious that I'm just petite, not anorexic. I hope the consultant will agree as I'll be really cheesed off if I'm forced into a hospital birth for the sake of a couple of kilos!

She's made me an appointment at the hospital for 16 weeks so will have to wait until then I guess. If I want it, I can have the alpha feta protein (AFP) blood test for spina bifida at the same time.

Sorky, sorry to hear you didn't have a very nice weekend. Hope the row with hubby has blown over now - it's probably the hormones!

Fingers crossed, I seem to be rid of the sickness completely now. Still having the occasional retching fit but nothing has come up now since last weekend, and I've stopped feeling sick at certain smells and the sight of certain foods.

Am 13 weeks today so hopefully the worst is over. Weeks 7-9 were my nightmare weeks - after that it all got much better.

Good Afternoon All,

I'm new to all this but thought it would be nice to talk to other expectant mums.
I'm 16 weeks and 1 day today (due 04/02/2007) and although I thought the second trimester was supposed to be alot better I still feel as bad as I did in the first!

Currantbun - I'm glad to hear your sickness is subsiding - I wish mine would!

I'm not really sure what to write but I have my 16week check up on Friday so hopefully I'll have more to say then! (Although I don't have regular internet access) I also have my 20wk scan on 21st September and am really excited as the first one was amazing!

Oh one question - the sleeping thing - I really cannot get comfy and I bought a full length body pillow that isn't helping! Any tips?

Take care everyone!

soundbites · 21/08/2006 17:17

Currantbun - really interested that you want to go for a birthing centre / home birth. I am very keen on the birthing centre nearish me. It is 30 mins away compared to only 10 mins for the nearest hospital and everyone I have spoken to says this time difference will be an eternity when in labour - but I have also heard a couple of positive accounts of the birthing centre which has just 6 beds, birthing pool, active birth options etc. Is this your first baby too - I think I remember it was. DH is concerned that I wouldn't be in a hospital if something went wrong, and one person has said that as my pregnancy progresses I may well find I want the reassurance of a hospital, but I think I'll go and have a look at both. Anyway, just interested in your views ?

maazaa · 21/08/2006 19:38

Hello and welcome Mary, will be great to see you as and when!

Currantbun, should we be addressing you as "Paula" from now on?!!! I believe she is pregnant too...... . However, my google sleuthing has revealed she is due in January!!!!!!!!

On the subject of birthing centres, if we had one near by, I would definately have a look! I have been watching far too much Sky, Home and Health channel and there is a programme called Babes in the Wood, based in the New Forest, I think. On the (many ) episodes I have watched, they seem to have the facility to whip you into hospital if the labour gets tricky, but at least the first bit is there, all quiet and serene, pool to hand.

maazaa · 21/08/2006 19:38

Sorry, meant to put "she is pregnant too......

cadbury · 21/08/2006 19:40

Aha! So here you all are. I thought no one was speaking to me on the other thread! I'll repost what I spent ages writing at the weekend if you don't mind becasue I'm too darned knackered to write it all from scratch!

I've been away on a rather stressful camping holiday with my family and my parents. My stomach has been in knots all the time with the worry of everyone getting on ok and things didn't kick off into an argument until th last morning but I'm more than just a little bit pleased to be home again, I can tell you!.

I am now 15 + 4 and looking a lot bigger. None of my trousers fit me now apart from the big baggy tracksuit bottoms I wore when pg last time. I haven't had any bigger trousers with me to I've had to undoo zips and buttons everytie I sit down to be able to breathe all holiday - and of course forgetting to do them up again when I stand up again . Been caught out a few times. I was convinced that I had put on loads of weight over the holiday but I am a few pounds lighter than when I went! At my size, that's no bad thing!

I haven't had a chance to read all the posts since I went away in depth but has anyone else (probably 2nd or 3rd time mums) felt baby moving yet? I felt it a fair bit over the last week or so. It's been very reasurring.
I had a midwife appt just before I went away too and heard the babies heartbeat (eventually - the wriggler kept kicking the doppler away!).

So snorkycake, are we the same person do you think?

MaybeBaba · 21/08/2006 19:52

Evening - got my nuchal scan results today - 1 in 4700 which I believe is ok given I am 37! I know it is only indicative, but settled my mind anyway! Sufering with tiredness today - busy weekend catching up with me - so early bath and bed tonight - send dd to bed early as well as she was tired! (well she looked it!!)
Struggling to eat al my tea and have gone of anything tomato based! Off to a family function in Scotland at the weekend - will take some emergency rations with me in case I get peckish!

suzi2 · 21/08/2006 20:46

I would definately go to a birthing centre if there was one near me. But there isn't, so this time I'm hoping for a home birth. Statistically, it's less risky than a hospital birth. But you do still wonder "what if something went wrong". But then the midwife has said that in an emergency, I'd be at hospital in 20 mins. And if I was already in hospital, it would take 20 mins to get the consultants/theatre or whatever ready. So it doesn't matter apart from the fact that they can't deal with every issue while in an ambulance.

Really hoping it's everything I'm imagining. I have a really rose tinted view of birth these days!

suzi2 · 21/08/2006 20:47

Oh, I held my friends 3 day old boy today - she is still in hospital and having a bit of difficulty breastfeeding so I was trying to lend some support. He's so cute! It's a good thing I'm already pg, as walking through that post natal ward made me seriously broody!
