Just the thought of working full time and having a child stresses me out but it gives me hope that lots of women do manage it. DH keeps reminding me that he will also be bringing up the child though, hah. Don't think going part time is really an option for me unfortunately, more due to the head rather than finances.

Is anyone else having complexion problems? I'm so spotty at the mo, it's like I've gone back in time to my teenage years! lol

Nazly · 23/03/2014 22:27

Misog, We are also dependant on my income a lot although having a long chat with dh he thinks we can manage on one income... It would be difficult though... Ours was planned and we have some savings, but for me eating through the savings just so I can stay home longer doesn't make a lot of sense

Kat, what you say sounds really really difficult and I know what will happen is out of my hands, but I guess I have to just deal with things if they happen; obviously if I go through even half of what you went through, there is no way I could go back to work!!

Onein you are being so nice to grannies :) I am just going to be a difficult daughter or DIL and ask them to take over some child care... Both of them were so keen to see their first grandchild (on both sides) so they get to taste the difficulties as well as joys!!! :)

On planning for mat leave, I wish I could just say I am leaving and then get back early if I want to, (I know legally I can) but my employer is a very small company and they will suffer a lot... I had my own business for a while and can understand how difficult it could be for MD, they will have to recruit somebody and then either keep them when my dep can not pay for one additional resource or let them go at high cost... My work is not easy to recruit for on maternity cover basis only... And I also fear if somebody is recruited, then I will lose my position and a lot of flexibility which comes with it... It is all much more complicated when you work for a small company... I think it could be much easier to deal with a large organisation or public companies...

P.s. After a long time of not much physical activities I went swimming today; I now know why they say it is good when you are pregnant... It is brilliant... Feeling weightless and not even pregnant for a while... Loved it x

Topsyloulou · 24/03/2014 06:21

Yes to the spots Topmammy. My skin is now worse than when I was a teenager! The only reason I've got a glowing complexion at the minute is the extra blusher I'm wearing to cover up the spots!

cookielove · 24/03/2014 07:41

I'm not spotty but my rosecea is terrible has been almost the whole pregnancy and what makes it really annoying is that it is on my forehead and 1 cheek! If it was on both I wouldn't look so odd. Confused

isitme1 · 24/03/2014 09:12

I was really spotty with ds1
None with ds2

dc aren't letting me sleep or lie in
at 5.30/6 they are both up.
Angry

Missingcaffeine · 24/03/2014 09:14

I plan on working as long as possible, as think I'm going to need as much time afterwards as possible.

This is my first though, so it's really hard to know how I'm going to feel!

I was planning on taking 6 months, because financially, we are going to really struggle financially after 6 months. We could possibly stretch to 9 months at a push. I have been advised by friends who have had children, to tell my employers that I plan on taking longer than 6 months, as I may not feel able to go back that early, and if by 4 months, I am lucky and have a baby who sleeps and feeds well, then I can tell them I plan to return at 6 months. I think so much depends on how well the baby is. Some babies sleep well, eat well and fall into a good routine quickly, others don't - despite all efforts by those looking after them.

I don't know how realistic this is. I do think returning after 3 months, whilst not impossible, could feel almost impossible, especially if baby is not an 'easy' baby.

Does anyone know if it is possible to work part-time/agency for another organisation whilst on maternity leave from full time employer? I would like to return part-time after 6 months, but know it won't be allowed. I could however, work a few agency shifts, if it is allowed and if it doesn't affect maternity pay?

I'm 14 weeks and as soon I found out my scan and bloods were alright, I told all my friends and family this week. I spoke to my friend the other day, who sadly lost her 2nd baby at 17 weeks, and she said she was glad she had told everyone she was pregnant at 12 weeks, as she would have had to tell most people anyway, as she struggled so much with the loss and actually it made it easier telling people about the loss when they already knew she was pregnant. She said if she has another, she will tell people after her first scan.

whiteblossom · 24/03/2014 11:01

Morning everyone! Ive had a busy weekend, catching up on dog walking (my first proper walk since December), Ironing etc. I feel almost normal!!

Today I did my prenatal yoga dvd, and I knew that I had let things slide but I really felt it this morning, so Im determined to get back to where I was. Im swimming on Wednesday with a pre-natal group so that should be interesting! Im def' feeling more like my old self but I know I need to be carefull, Im great at over doing things.

Oh and Im very spotty too Sad So much so Im thinking of seeing the doc, my back is terrible- I plan on wearing a t-shirt swimming!

CloverHeart · 24/03/2014 12:02

Hello all, may I join? My EDD is 27th Sept but I am likely to end up with an induction the way things are going at the moment Confused

Having an Amnio on 7th April as i have a high risk of downs syndrome - but this is purely based on the biochemistry results and overall the odds are in our favour - fingers crossed..

[waving hello]

HippyJess · 24/03/2014 12:56

Hi Clover! Good to have you :) I'm sure your amnio results will be fine, but I'll keep everything crossed for you anyway :)

To the fellow spotty people, I sympathise! My face is relatively unscathed but my boobs are covered in pimples, they look awful! My back has some too, this has never been a problem before, it's sooooo weird Confused

Missingcaffeine · 24/03/2014 13:04

I'm spotty too. Let me know if you find any miracle cures! I've started using clean n clear exfoliating daily scrub again this week, which I've not used since I grew out of my acne (mid-20's) but did find this was a good one. Someone told me that spots mean you're having a girl as girls supposedly take away your looks during pregnancy! I'm convinced I'm having a boy though!

Welcome clover.

HippyJess · 24/03/2014 13:16

Ooh missing, I've been convinced I'm having a girl and my mum's needle test said so so that would be interesting if it was true! My sister isn't spotty and her needle test said boy Grin I love a bit of fun nonsense.

Missingcaffeine · 24/03/2014 13:25

What's a needle test?!

calliegs · 24/03/2014 13:33

I'm spotty too. Went for Harmony test instead of amnio as non-invasive and no miscarriage risk. Just awaiting results in next couple of weeks. Have lost some weight in past couple of weeks - not huge amount and I had a bit of a blow out so I had put on a bit more than I should at around week 10. Didn't get a booking appt until 13 weeks and nuchal scan may or may not have been too late depending on which scan date you go by

Lottiedoubtie · 24/03/2014 13:38

I'm bit more spotty than usual, but not too bad yet.

My Dsis was very spotty in pregnancy- she has two DS's!

HippyJess · 24/03/2014 13:58

Needle test is the same as the wedding ring one - thread a needle, dangle it over the bump! If it moves in a circle it's a girl, side to side for a boy. It is, of course, a load of bollocks Grin

whiteblossom · 24/03/2014 14:18

shhhhh....I bought some baby bodysuits today! I had to return something to a shop and stupidly binned the receipt (baby brain) so I could only exchange. They are grey and white, so unisex and up to one month in size. Sooo tiny and cute!! Ive got a box in my bedroom for all baby related stuff so Ill keep adding to it until the room is ready- wont be a while yet.

cookielove · 24/03/2014 14:32

Oooh i was talking to my genetic counselling Dr with regards to the harmony test, and she said that the reason it isn't available on the NHS yet (it will be one day) is that because it just isn't accurate enough yet and although the science has come on in leaps and bounds it doesn't give enough of an accurate diagnosis for the NHS to back it.

We asked because of the syndrome i have, could it be identified and she said no and then went into the further explanation above, also she said she had someone in there that had been misdiagnosed from it!

I am in two minds whether to post this as i think it is such a sensitive subject but i think it is important for people to know as the companies offering this procedure may not be disclosing all the information as essentially they want to make money!

BooSurprise · 24/03/2014 14:48

Interesting about the harmony cookie I had been lead to believe from what I'd read that it was more accurate than the nuchal and bloods.
missing as far as I know you can't work for another employer (and that would include doing agency shifts, even if you were already employed by them pre mat leave) without telling your employer and it affecting your mat pay, you can do one KIT day a week, I think up to 5 maybe, without it affecting pay tho.
I'm so bloody hungry today, probably cause dd was up in the night again, and GD dictates no chocolate!

isitme1 · 24/03/2014 15:21

My last pregnancy was sopo different to my first and this pregnancy is different from the last Confused I was convinced I was having a girl last time due to how different everything was.
The biggest difference in this pregnancy is the bleed in front of sac, bp being up, kidney problems from the start rather than from 2nd trimester and not fancying curry. Thats all we eat really (hubby does mainly) and I camt face eating it!

Bananapickle · 24/03/2014 16:59

Hello everyone. Can I join the fun please?! Due date is 16th September. Expecting baby number 2, already have a 3 yr old.
Pregnancy has been pretty uneventful so far which is similar to my first, thankfully no sickness (I know I'm lucky!) and just sheer exhaustion.
This weekend has seen the first bit of drama as my 3 yr old has chicken pox and it turns out I'm not immune so had to have the immunisation today. Glad I had it done but I tell you it flipping hurts as it's two MASSIVE injections in ya bum!!
As for the spots, like others here I have turned into a teenager!!

lilone1234 · 24/03/2014 18:34

I'd also like to join please! I'm due 9th Sept with baby number one. Very excited and happy (when not a hormonal wreck) but so worried all the time! Is it just me or is two scans completely not enough? How do they expect you to go so long without knowing what is going on? Especially when it's relatively early on so you can't feel any movement. That's my obsessive thought of the moment!

16 weeks tomorrow and have an appointment with consultant as apparently at a higher risk of big baby and gestational diabetes as have a high BMI. Got a glucose tolerance test next week too - anyone got experience of that??

And on the subject of spots, they are multiplying on a daily basis! Over the weekend I started using sudocrem on them as recommended by another mumsnetter and it does seem to be calming them down!

lucidlady · 24/03/2014 18:43

cookie that is interesting and definitely a good talking point!

Of course the only 100% test is the amnio - neither Harmony or NHS blood tests offer 100% accuracy however the Harmony is meant to be more accurate as it's looking for DNA markers. The guy who devised the Harmony test pioneered the original Downs NT screening method. This is a good interview that explains more about the test: www.genomeweb.com/sequencing/qa-prenatal-screening-pioneer-kypros-nicolaides-introducing-non-invasive-testing

I had my Harmony test done at his clinic which is a medical research charity - the Fetal medicine centre.

The main NHS objection is on grounds of cost - samples have to be sent to the US for processing but it's currently on offer at 2 NHS hospitals - Kings in London and one down South I think.

Apparently it took 12 years for the NHS to accept that NT screening should be done!! Isn't it crazy to think that 10 years ago we possibly wouldn't know any of this stuff...

CumbrianExile · 24/03/2014 18:44

Welcome Banana and lilone

Guess I am the only one without the spots! But my excema is really playing up at the minute. And I can't use my usual cream as it contains a high level of steroids. Have been given a milder one by the doctor, but its not as good. He told me that most peoples skin gets better in pregnancy but judging my the comments here! Hmm

cookielove · 24/03/2014 18:47

lilone I had a glucose intolerance test last week, basically they prick your finger then take blood. They then give you a glucose drink, a newer version that taste of really sweet orange (apparently it used to be yucky) then you sit for two hours and then they take more blood!

CoolCat2014 · 24/03/2014 18:54

Hello all new people & welcome Smile

I had 16 wk appointment today, didn't think it would be so quick! Only had b/p and urine done, and been asked to reuse the pee pot for next time Hmm

When do we find out more about antenatal classes and birth options etc? I feel like I've had no information so far and feel a bit clueless as to what's to come.

Spots... All over my back and chest. Lovely. Tea tree oil can be good, but careful as some anti acne stuff isn't safe in pregnancy, think it's best to avoid salicylic acid and BHA
