Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
MrsGSR · 16/01/2014 22:25

Congratulations gummi!

I hope things get easier Felix :( I have no advice (as still waiting for my first to make an appearance!). I'm massively pro breastfeeding, but also believe whatever is best for mum is best for baby. That's probably not at all helpful, I'm trying to say make the decision that's right for you.

TarkaTheOtter · 16/01/2014 22:47

felix make sure you get to a dr if there is any redness or signs of a fever - ie don't be an idiot like me and just hope it'll resolve itself! Probably repeating stuff that's been covered earlier but has baby been checked for tongue tie? Feeding was painful til about 8 weeks with dd because of her tt. After every feed my nipple would be all slanted like a lipstick because her latch was so bad.

It doesn't have to be a "bad" tongue tie either. Alex's is tongue tie too and his actually looks worse but he feeds a dream. Difference is he can stick his tongue out properly whereas dd couldn't really stick hers out and it was heart shaped when she tried because the middle was being held back by the tie.

Blocked duct plus pain really suggests that the latch isn't quite right. Some midwives/hv seem to assume that if baby is gaining weight then the latch must be ok but that isn't necessarily the case if you have a fast letdown. Do you find baby is windy too?

TarkaTheOtter · 16/01/2014 22:47

Massive congrats gummi and good luck all those being induced tonight!

Felix90 · 16/01/2014 23:00

Thanks mrsg!

Tarka she hasn't been checked as every midwife I saw said her latch was ok and the pain I am getting is just because my nipples need to 'toughen up.' She also gets very windy!! I even mentioned the pain to my HV on Monday and she dismissed it saying I must have a fast let down. I had about a week where I had pain during the first few sucks then no pain at all during the feed, but the past couple of days I've had a sharp pain through my nipple when she's feeding. I've got some nipple shields - do you think this would help or just make things worse? I have just given her some formula because I'm so sore and I feel really guilty as she usually only has one bottle through the night Confused

I'm not sure what to do about the blocked duct? I have been having hot baths and holding a hot flannel over the lump on my nipple which made the lump leak a tiny bit and it's no longer painful, but it's been a couple of days since then and the lump hasn't gotten any smaller.

Angelesque · 16/01/2014 23:06

Congrats Gummi! Lovely name... And in fact we might steal if we have a girl! Great to hear such a positive induction story too

TarkaTheOtter · 16/01/2014 23:30

Grr just typed a long reply felix then lost it! Can you get advise from a breastfeeding specialist in your area? Midwives actually have very little breastfeeding training and can't always tell when a latch isn't very good. If you are still in pain at 4 weeks then obviously there is a problem. The charity I volunteer with only covers one county but the NCT, La Leche League and the Breastfeeding Network offer support nationally.

Felix90 · 16/01/2014 23:39

I said the other day that I'd email the bf lady from my NCT class but haven't got round to it yet! I'll make sure I do it in the morning. Thank you for your advice Tarka it's been great!

BuntCadger · 16/01/2014 23:52

fabulous news gummi Grin and how special after all the of too xxThanks

felix - tarka given excellent advice. I had latch issues with dd which seems mad as she was my 3rd but ended up she had lip tie and do needed to be given an exaggerated latch. she still not great on latch but not such an issue as only morning and bedtime.

Thanks humpty re facebook. who here is in group so I can PM you? I find fb much easier x

HumptyDumptyBumpty · 17/01/2014 00:01

gummi congratulations! What a lovely name as well.

felix agree with tarka from what I've read (no actual experience, but have read up and talked to friends), it shouldn't still be painful. Sore, maybe, but not so you're considering giving up. Lactation consultant? Do you have one nearby?

inductioneers how are we going? I am being monitored now, waiting for pessary in a while. Good news is that there's only one other lady, that staff are lovely and that at latest, I will go to labour ward by 6am sat for ARM and drip if we don't progress by then. And on labour ward, DH is allowed in 24 hours.
Also, he can come back at 8 am if I want him to. Feel much less pathetic and needy now.
How go the other inductions?

AnotherStitchInTime · 17/01/2014 00:35

Congratulations gummi Thanks

felix try giving la leche league (0845 120 2918) or the national breastfeeding helpline a call (0300 100 0212). Sometimes sharp pains in the nipple when feeding can mean that you have a thrush infection in your nipple. You need to get this checked by your GP and both you and Sylvie treated if you do have it otherwise you can pass it back and forth.

Glad you are settled humpty and that the antenatal ward is quiet. Good news about visiting times for your DH. Hope the pessary kicks things off for you.

TarkaTheOtter · 17/01/2014 03:31

Hope the inductions are going well!!

HumptyDumptyBumpty · 17/01/2014 06:49

Anyone who's being induced or been induced before, I have a question: I'm getting longish, sustained period type cramps which are really hurting. There are gaps between them, but not v long ones.
Mw has given me paracetamol and codeine phosphate, but I can't lie down or sleep. Only comfy position is perched on side of bed, legs wide apart, leaning forwards.

So, is this 'just' prostin pains, or are we getting somewhere? Tell it to me straight, despite hysteria of past two weeks, I am in the zone and can take it!

Hugs to anyone else having this, it's un-fun.

MrsVDB · 17/01/2014 07:16

Congratulations gummi having an Ivf baby must make it even more special (if that's possible). Lovely name too :)

No advice I'm afraid humpty but sounds like things are moving along, good luck :)

Shroomboom · 17/01/2014 07:19

Congratulations Gummi! Gorgeous name too!

Felix if you look at your nipple can you see a little white bit at the end of the blocked duct? It's like a milk plug I suppose, it'll only be tiny? If you can see it then you can always sterilise a little pin or needle and just get it out like you would a splinter. I did this when breast feeding ds and it gave instant relief (and a jet spray of milk that landed on the bathroom mirror - dh has never let me forget it Grin)

Good luck Bunt am afraid I can't help with the pain question, but hope things go really well!

BandontheFun · 17/01/2014 08:00

Humpty I have been having the same pain, can't lie down. Which is annoying because I am pooped! Just about to go for a bath. Then the midwife is going to dish out the pain killers. Hopefully one of the veterans will be able to shed a little light.

I am having to turn my phone on and off because this hospital won't let you charge anything....it's barbaric!

Oh and congratulations Gummi

fryingpantoface · 17/01/2014 08:22

humpty

i had that, it was just pessary pain. It bloody hurt though. Sadly it wasn't anything for me at all. Try lying down on your side supported by a pillow.

fingers crossed for you

sarahleanne · 17/01/2014 09:08

Congratulations gummi, beautiful name.

humpty I had the same pains that did progress and before I knew it they checked me and I was 5cm, total shock and I had been breathing through them thinking it was just pessary pains. I was really achey at first and then it got worse.

Sending loads of good luck to those of you getting induced today.

I lost the bloody thread so not sure if I've missed anything major . My milk has come in today and I look like Pamela Anderson, holy shit I forgot how much it hurts and tommy is sleeping for England and not wanting to feed :( I think I may just squirt it into bottles haha.

MrsGSR · 17/01/2014 09:24

What's the test to do if you think your waters are leaking?

Keeping fingers crossed for those being induced; hope things are moving quickly and everything goes well

MrsVDB · 17/01/2014 09:32

Ooh mrsg think they might have gone? Lie down but not fully flat (ie propped up by pillows) I think for half an hour. When you stand up if there's a gush then its waters. Good luck :)

Naturegirl82 · 17/01/2014 10:19

humpty hope the pains are something.

I had a lot of more uncomfortable period cramps last night (more than usual ended up getting up four times in 5 hours). Started in the fanjo area and went up to low abdomen. Still here this morning and it feels like lot of weight bearing down. I'm hoping this sounds promising??

Naturegirl82 · 17/01/2014 10:19

Let us know how you get on mrsg

flyawayblue · 17/01/2014 10:27

Hoe you've been checked humpty and you are progressing or have baby cuddles already.

Oh possible waters, good luck.

I'm on my way in to my post date mw appointment think I might cry on them if not favorable for a sweep, feel really done now and want to meet her..

fryingpantoface · 17/01/2014 10:42

If it's your waters you definitely will be able to tell when you stand up.

good luck with the appointment fly

Angelesque · 17/01/2014 12:02

Ooh Nature sounds promising!!

Well, I see Zara Phillips has beaten lots of us to the delivery suite... Grin

flyawayblue · 17/01/2014 12:12

Had a small sweep but only 1cm so not very favorable. Also have a scan booked in for this afternoon as no change in their cm bump measurements since two weeks ago. One good thing about a bigger hospital is that I just had to go across the corridor and have a scan in two hours.

Going to go find lunch in the gap and meet dh.

Hope everyone with inductions today is going well. Discovered my hospital does out patient induction for the first 24 hours if your not high risk. May be interesting.
