Oh and I'm 19 weeks today :) x

randdom · 28/12/2013 10:11

Hello moomin35. You are due the day after me!

I'm not sure whether to start buying things for baby yet. I know that it makes sense due to the sales but it all seems very early as I haven't had my 20 week scan yet .. What do people think?

moobaloo · 28/12/2013 10:14

randdom I am going shopping with my mum in the week after my scan (6th Jan). Hoping there are still going to be some good things worth getting for baby! Waiting until after scan as want to see if Team Pink or Team Blue so can get a few gender stereotyped things Shock Wink

Soooo excited - I'm 20 weeks on Monday! Halfway through!! Scan not for another week after that though as they are closed for new year Sad selfish hospital workers! I want to see my baby! Grin

LongTailedTit · 28/12/2013 10:18

randdom Tbh I'm not at all superstitious and tend to assume everything's fine - if you know what you want I'd go ahead and buy it.

Worst case scenario you could hand a friend a wodge of receipts and your bank card and get it all returned, but that is such an unlikely scenario I wouldn't even worry about it.

Baby buying can cost you hundreds for just the basics - sales are a godsend, as long as you don't end up spending twice as much on 'bargains' you hadn't planned to buy! Wink

mrsmummytobe · 28/12/2013 10:36

Randdom I feel like it's really early too (I'm 21 weeks tomorrow) but as others have said it's either buy them now in the sales or pay double nearer the time. We're not getting it all now, just some of the essentials.

loopylou52 · 28/12/2013 10:48

Quite the overnight party going on here last night! Hope everyone who was struggling with sleep has managed to make up for it and isn't feeling too bad. Also sorry to hear about poorly dc - fingers crossed for speedy recoveries all round.

Welcome to clearly and moomin35!

We had a look around the shops yesterday for some sale baby stuff but didn't find many neutral baby clothes that were decent bargains. We have seen a Mamas and Papas moses basket half price which we'll probably order. We're trying to contain ourselves until we've sorted the nursery though as we don't have anywhere to put anything!

impatientlywaiting · 28/12/2013 10:50

Welcome Moomin35.

I hadn't even thought of getting any baby stuff in the sale. Will have a look online today for any bargains.

Jellymum1 · 28/12/2013 11:02

Hi everyone. 20+3 here with DD number 2. I havent bought anything yet! I wish id have thought ahead and realised that i should save some money for sale shopping! Silly me. The crib iwant in mothercare is reduced to 44 pounds! I must try and get it at that price rather than pay full but im totally skint. Does the january sales last all of january?? I am such a last minute person that it never crossed my mind Blush

I can feel TONS of kicking now.

My DD has yet another vomiting "bug" she gets them often and holds on for a long time. Im not really sure its a bug at all but thats another story. My OCD clean DH is having a nervous breakdown practically....ive packed him off to the shops out of the way.

MrsFooCough · 28/12/2013 11:08

Hey moomin35 we're due date buddies! Xmas Smile
I have been sent an email by MIL saying there's a sale at Kiddicare, and that I can pick out some things we like/need/want and she'll get them. However they don't even have two pennies to rub together for warmth so I'm not sure whether she means stuff like dummies/teats etc or maybe something as big as a carrycot/car seat? Xmas Confused
I have been coughing pretty much like clockwork, every 30mins. Haven't weed myself like that since last night though which is nice. Presumably Bean was right over my bladder? I dunno. It was horrible though, cried my eyes out, wailing that DH would never want to have sex with me again. He then proceeded to snog me silly at bedtime and got a semi showed me how much he loved me Xmas Wink

Woo hoo for new thread! We've been shopping a bit too, ordered the pram and cot so thats the big things sorted anyway.

Any other first timers totally overwhelmed with the amount of baby stuff/choice of things available in the shops? I didn't have a clue what to pick up and ended up with a few random bits and bobs!

snoozysleeper · 28/12/2013 12:30

Thankyou for the new threadmrsmoo Smile

I hope all those with poor sleep, get better sleep soon! I could barely sleep last week but this week no problems!

Might go and have a look at the sales...

snoozysleeper · 28/12/2013 12:38
  • mrsfoo sorry Blush
Xavielli · 28/12/2013 13:10

Flixy - it can be very confusing I agree. They really don't need much in the beginning. Somewhere to sleep, something to eat, something to wear + outdoor layer and something to travel in.

Xavielli · 28/12/2013 14:28

Just been to mothercare and bought 3 sleep suits for £5 (half price) just 3 more sleep suits and a pack of 7 vests and that's my clothes shopping done :)

hobbjobb · 28/12/2013 14:32

Hi everyone. Exciting that everyone is starting to buy stuff.

We got our travel system (pram, pushchair and car seat) from a friend who was selling hers so that's all done.
I am hitting Ikea later in January for the cot etc.

My 20 week scan isn't til the 10th jan it feels like ages away!
I am 19+1 today

Spirael · 28/12/2013 14:34

[materialises] I've been around and reading, just too busy to post lately! Hope everyone had a lovely Christmas. :) Lovely but manic here, currently the calm before the storm as we have the other half of the family arriving tomorrow to begin the new year celebrations!

We're reusing pretty much everything from DD, but for those who are shopping around I can advise getting the following from our previous experience:

If you can't fit the cot in your bedroom, then looking at getting/borrowing something like a crib or a moses basket is a good idea - as even ignoring the issued guidance, newborns feed so often in the early days it's just very useful to keep them close by!

We liked having a love nest pillow (they're suitable for newborns), as it provided more neck support and seemed to be more comfortable for DD. Also, sleeping bags are the way forward - as soon as they're big enough to use one! A lot of LO are big enough from birth.

Also worth getting is at least one bottle, a newborn teat, a way to sterilise (milton tablets will be fine if you're not planning to use bottles much) and a carton of newborn milk - even if you're fully intending to exclusively breastfeed.

You never know what will happen in the early stages of breast feeding and it's better to have everything ready rather than trying to acquire stuff at 2am on a Sunday morning or similar!

For those intending to breastfeed then breast pads, Lansinoh and some nipple shields are a good idea to have in as well. Also worth investing in is a nice breastfeeding cushion, as those who are BFing will likely find themselves seeming to do nothing but for the first few months!

For clothes, vests and sleepsuits are relatively obvious. Make sure you get Newborn and 0-3 Months - DD was only in Newborn clothes for a week! Same with Size 1 and Size 2 nappies, make sure you have a pack of both at the ready. Also make sure you have a few newborn hats! Mits are optional - we elected instead to trim DD's nails straight away. Though that is a nerve wracking exercise...

Changing mat is handy, possibly two if you have an upstairs and a downstairs as it means you can have a changing station on both floors and don't need to go up and down more than necessary. A bit hit and miss for some people, but we liked the Angelcare nappy bins.

We found having a good bouncy seat, we invested in the Baby Bjorn one, was incredibly useful. DD loved sitting in it and just watching the world go by, and would doze if someone bounced it with a foot for her.

Lastly, my DH would like to add that online food shopping is essential, as placing a delivery in the afternoon DD was born and having it delivered the following day meant he didn't have to leave us. :)

Sorry, a bit of an essay! Hope that was helpful.

moominleigh94 · 28/12/2013 15:02

What does the head circumference show? At my 20 week scan the head circumference was 2 days smaller than the due date according to my notes. It's clearly not taking after me, I struggle to find hats that fit Grin

kally195 · 28/12/2013 15:11

Hello everyone - hope you all had a fantastic Christmas.

I joined this thread a while ago, but then disappeared as I am rubbish and we have been insanely busy. Things are calming down a bit now, and I am actually starting to feel pregnant (if that makes sense) so I thought I would show my face again....

I am 20 weeks today and have my scan on Monday. I am an equal mix of nervous and excited - especially as we are going to find out the sex. Everything seems to be going OK so far and my bump has really popped out over the last week. I am also feeling what I think are fairly regular movements as well.

Spirael - thanks for the great info on what to buy. We are going to start looking after the scan.

Is anyone else starting to get daft requests from family? We have a family wedding in August (DH's brother) when the spud will be 8-10 weeks old, depending on when I pop. We are going - it's only about 2.5 hours drive at the most. However, when we were talking to the PILs, we said we would probably be staying in a nearby B&B/hotel, as the (noisy) reception is taking place at their house and there will be lots of family staying. We want to be able to step away and have some peace and quiet, which would not happen if we stayed with them.

This was met with a bit of a guilt trip and comments along the lines of MIL will be devastated if we don't stay. FIL then went on to say they were hoping we would stay the week so that the baby could bond with its cousins etc. It was then pointed out that I wouldn't see the baby at the wedding as it would be passed round all the relatives and I wouldn't get a look in.

Thankfully I have a wonderful, very strong-willed and protective DH, who immediately made it clear that we would be doing exactly what was best for us (in particular me and spud) and nothing else. He has no problem upsetting them if needs be. It just has me worried - that this indicates they are going to be a bit of a pain. I've started worrying a bit about the birth - I don't want them descending on us and comments have been made along the lines that MIL will be packing her bags the minute she finds out I'm in labour...

I know deep down that it is daft to be obsessing, as DH will not stand for any rubbish and will put our wishes first. But I don't seem to be able to stop thinking about it. Someone tell me it's the hormones!

Irisheyessmiling · 28/12/2013 17:47

Hello everyone hope you all had a wonderful Christmas! Back from mil which was...interesting. Lots of not so subtle sniping ( we aren't exactly bosom buddies) as soon as the wine started flowing and unsolicited bump grabbing. The bump she calls the 'granny bump' because it's her baby and I'm just 'keeping it warm for her'! kally I feel your pain! I'm dreading the politics of who out of the parents gets first cuddle as that's not going to be a calm discussion. I hate the way she treats dh so don't see why she should get all the nice stuff when she can't be bothered the rest of the time! Oh well, home now and my birthday tomorrow so time to chill!

Looking forward to hitting the sales-anyone got any advice for bedding and what I should be looking at getting? Planning on using grobags as soon as big enough but what do I need alongside that? And what do I use before they fit into global? I know layers are good but layers of what and how much?! Ridiculous-used to be a nursery nurse and nanny but has been some years since my training and never did newborns, ask me from about 6 months and I'm golden!

moomin35 · 28/12/2013 17:49

Hi everyone :-) I managed to drag my bf to Mothercare today to try out travel systems. My mums kindly offered to buy ours so Ive gone for a very reasonable (I think?)! Mothercare one which I will ask her to get. Was quite handy seeing them for real rather than online...good job my bf was with me though because I had no clue how to operate any of them!! She said she will also get me a moses basket which would be nice. My bf's mum has said she may get the cot so other than that we plan to buy little else to be honest!

ThistletoeAndWine · 28/12/2013 18:00

Kiddie care have good sale on

Xavielli · 28/12/2013 18:06

Bear in mind whilst shopping in the sales that we'll be having early summer babies. Bedding wise a couple of bottom sheets for mosesbasket/cot, a couple of thin sheets for covering/ swaddling or a swaddle wrap and a cellular blanket or two will do.
Also things to bear in mind is that these are the things people tend to get rid of first so if you aren't squeamish about 2nd hand stuff and have friends with babies it might be worth holding off a bit.

I always buy tiny baby for before they're born wth maybe 1-2 newborn bits - I've only had 1 over 6.5lb and he lost over a pound in the first 2 weeks anyway. People will buy so much when the baby is born, especially 1st time gps/aunties/uncles.

JodeyP · 28/12/2013 18:07

Marking my place then off to look on the Maas & papas website to try and grab a bargain. I have not yet bought a thing! Xmas Blush

JodeyP · 28/12/2013 18:08

mamas rather Blush

moominleigh94 · 28/12/2013 18:24

Might head to Chester next week and have a look at Babies R Us and Mothercare in the sales. Was going to stick to my town but need some baby bits. Think we've found the travel system we're going to get - quite a basic Graco one but it's nice :)
