Congratulations all you new Mums....and surprised to see you still here Laura!.
Looks like I'm gonna be slipping over into July then.....ooooh, I'm so looking forward to this predicted heatwave...

Have any of you ladies got any opinions on dummies? It's just that my baby constantly is rooting around like he is hungry, when I know he isn't, chewing his hand and screaming beyond belief when he can't get his hand to his mouth. He will quieten down so you think he is resting or asleep then in the next breath try and scream the place down. This is worse at night.

I think he is trying to use his hand as a comfort, me and DH are at the end of our tether and considering using a dummy to see if it sorts it despite the fact we said he would never have one.

DS is 12 days old and this is our first child. Please help.

HELP!

trinity1 · 30/06/2006 17:52

Hi Vbab78. Congratulations again on your DS.

I'm a first time mum too. Our DD is 2 weeks old today and does exactly the same so we've opted for a dummy. The minute she's put in her cot or moses basket she screams the place down, even though she's been fed and her nappy's been changed. If it wasn't for a dummy we still wouldn't have gotten any sleep since the 16th June, so I'm all for it! Good luck!

vbab78 · 30/06/2006 18:09

trinity - congrats once again on your dd. also thanks for reassuring me that me and dh are not alone.

When does your dd have the dummy? all the time or just when she goes to bed or can't rest?

vbab78 · 30/06/2006 18:17

trinity - Just done the dummy experience on DS and all is quiet. Would DS still cry for a feed and spit out the dummy so to speak?

LilacWine · 30/06/2006 18:17

congratulations to all new mums! can't believe it's the end of june already and DS is a month old on monday!

vbab, DS has a dummy. DD hated them so never used them and swore never to use them with the new baby. and here we are...! he's very much into comfort sucking (even with being bottlefed) and the dummy really helps. he has it when trying to nap, not at night. he's also gone from sleeping perfectly happy on his own to wanting to be held to fall asleep and when i put him down in his cot he wakes up easily and screams.

vbab78 · 30/06/2006 18:17

meant to say experiment!

trinity1 · 30/06/2006 19:57

Vbab78 - I usually pop the dummy in just after she's been fed, winded and her nappy's been changed. At the moment she's feeding every 2 hours so as soon as she's settled into her moses basket or cot that's when I introduce it. She sleeps for the most part with it, then spits it out when she wakes for another feed! Hope that helps.

I was the same, I wasn't going to use a dummy but after the first 5 nights of her life without a wink of sleep, I caved in!

trinity1 · 30/06/2006 19:58

vbab78 - ps, eventually your DS may not need it at all, but if it calms him down, then it can't be a bad thing!

vbab78 · 30/06/2006 21:09

trinity - It has happened with my DS exactly as you described it for your DD. After his feed and change we gave him the dummy and put him straight in his moses basket, and he seems to have spat the dummy out now. He must just need that extra comfort to go to sleep. I just hope it continues like this.

I'm going to (fingers crossed) try to limit use of the dummy to bedtime if I think he needs it.

The only problem is now me and DH don't know what to do with this quiet time that we aren't used to!

AdelaideS · 30/06/2006 21:23

We think dummies are great. Ds was a very sucky baby and loved his dummy until he gave it up himself (at 5.5...incidentally ).Dd wouldn't ever take one and breastfed constantly for years which was also ok (ish). I have a dummy ready and waiting for no.3

trinity1 · 30/06/2006 23:01

Vbab78 - get some sleep! Everyone says I should be sleeping when DD is sleeping, but I just find myself running around trying to get the housework done (when I mean housework, I mean washing stacks of babyclothes that DD seems to get through at an alarming rate!)

Now my mum is coming round every other day to help out, I'm going to take that advice and get some well-overdue shut-eye!

trinity1 · 30/06/2006 23:03

Vbab78 - ps, DD does just that too - she's started spitting the dummy out once she's asleep. Enjoy the quiet time while it lasts!

AdelaideS · 01/07/2006 13:59

I'm getting a bit lonely here, anyone fancy coming over to July?

KiwiKat · 02/07/2006 17:11

Delighted to announce the safe arrival of our son Max on Saturday 24th June (originally due 13th July), following an emergency caesarean. He is healthy and beautiful, and we're completely in love with him.

MaryBS · 03/07/2006 07:31

Kiwikat - thats great news, I'm so pleased for you, after all you've been through!

diddle · 03/07/2006 17:34

vbab you should come over to the postnatal thread.
I am having the same trouble with a very sucky little boy. Josh is doing just the same as your little one, and we have given him a dummy and it sends him off to sleep then when he's deep in sleep it drops out, it doesnt stop him waking when he's hungry.

vbab78 · 04/07/2006 04:21

diddle - See you on the postnatal thread.

Laura032004 · 04/07/2006 19:52

William Thomas was born naturally (VBAC) on 1/7 at 10.29pm after a long labour! Not the home birth I'd envisaged, but we got there in the end.

Best wishes to anyone who's delivered since I was last around.

Congratulations Laura...
I'm still here (sniff), getting a bit lonely. Had an hour of contractions in the night that stopped completely, midwife has just come and done a sweep. I'm having a bit of pain, but not enough to distract me IYSWIM so I'm anxious, no...fuck it, let's be honest and say scared.
Ds's 7th birthday today, funny to think I was doing exactly the same 7 years ago, even same m/w did the sweep!
Think I'll have a cup of tea & watch some crappy tv.

Rodeo · 05/07/2006 13:11

Hello all! Just wondering if you'd all done yet (I enjoy reminising on all the impending birth threads, so exciting!) good luck to those with babies still to come - especially you Adelaide as it's my dd's 7th birthday too today!!
