Oops posted too soon, if anyone still wants to join the group on fb it's called 'nov 12 babies' you need to request to join. It's nice seeing the bump pics!
It's a closed group so only us lot can see the content :)

misslaughalot · 30/08/2012 10:07

I've been feeling a little kick from the baby every 2 seconds or so for the last few minutes, is it the hiccups?!

MissMummy1 · 30/08/2012 10:08

apple you've just reminded me my cars due a service too (I've been ignoring the service light for the last 6000 miles, oops...) DH is being put to work as we speak to change oils and filters and whatever else a service entails. Presuming if he can service his landrovers my little citroen will be a doddle! He's been put on nightshifts for the first time ever this today so pacing around not knowing what to do with himself this morning

Am I right in thinking you only need a GTT is glucose shows up in your urine at a routine mw appointment or you have a history of diabetes?

misslaughalot · 30/08/2012 10:09

Horsey I was told I should have the GTT because at 36 I'm officially a 'geriatric mother' Hmm. Not everyone has to have it.

Thechick · 30/08/2012 10:23

I don't have to have the GTT test and I'm 38. Isn't it to do with bloods or past history or urine tests??

misslaughalot · 30/08/2012 10:26

I think it's to do with weight also Sad

eversomuch · 30/08/2012 10:29

Horsey and missmummy, I was referred for the GTT because baby's abdominal circumference continues to measure quite large (around or above the 95th percentile) in scans, and this can be an indication of gestational diabetes.

My bloodwork at my 28wk MW appt came back fine, though (they look at glucose levels then), and all of DS's other measurements are normal/average, so I was hopeful that he just has an appetite to rival everyone else's in this family of eaters.

BTW, I just turned 40 and am at UCLH. They don't routinely give the test to all older mums there, but maybe other hospitals are different.

applepieinthesky · 30/08/2012 10:34

You only have the GTT if you're classed as high risk, ie have a history of it, if you get glucose in your urine, if close family members have it etc. I had to have it purely because my Grandad is from the West Indies and apparently there is a higher prevalence of it in certain countries/races.

YellowWellies · 30/08/2012 10:46

Aye I got told I won't need the GTT because I'm not overweight, junior isn't measuring big, there's no genetic risk and there's been no indicators in my regular blood and urine tests. I think those are the key triggers for it.

Had the NHS antenatal birth class last night. Was pish compared to the one I did last month in Edinburgh at the Pregnancy and Parents Centre. Even though the maternity hospital here is very hands off and pro-natural non-intervention birth - it was still very much focussed on what pain killers are available. Which is namely TENS, gas and air, paracetomol and diamorphine up here. On the down side there is only one 'bath' so if there are two women giving birth on the unit at the same time (unlikely as they only birth 12 a month) you can get a queue! Shock It just doesn't seem possible to do justice to a topic as big as birth in a one hour session.

On the plus side they have birth balls which they loan out for free to preggo ladies, and TENS machines.

Thechick · 30/08/2012 10:55

apple its funny how they have different rules depending on where you live. You had to have it purely because of your granddad and both my parents are west indian and I didn't.

applepieinthesky · 30/08/2012 11:00

Bizarre isn't it Thechick? It's only one of my grandparents as well. The other three are all white British.

Can someone please recommend a good childbirth book that I can order?

MissMummy1 · 30/08/2012 11:03

I ordered Ina May's Guide to Childbirth last week on Amazon. Not had a chance to properly read it yet but the few pages I have read are excellent and I've only ever heard good things about it.

Iheartpasties · 30/08/2012 11:12

yes - ina may gaskins book is ace

Skoggy · 30/08/2012 11:47

Hello ladies!

I'm quite new to Mumsnet and I thought I'd find a thread for babies due in Nov. :)

I'm due to have DD2 on 3rd Nov. I have 1 other daughter who is 14months. My last pregnancy was in Sweden so this is the first time I have experienced ante-natal care in the UK and boy! is it different! Smile Oh hum... off to 31wk appt today and have a growth scan on the 12th Sept to see how the little cherub is coming along. Grin

Catbag · 30/08/2012 11:47

Welcome Skoggy!

applepieinthesky · 30/08/2012 11:56

Welcome Skoggy Smile Different in what ways? Good or bad?

kirrinIsland · 30/08/2012 12:01

Welcome skoggy :)

Thechick · 30/08/2012 12:06

I have a growth scan today and said that 13 yr old ds could come as its the holidays. He has just pulled out because his grandfather is taking him to harvesters!! Lovely!!

Welcome to the list Skoggy

Skoggy · 30/08/2012 12:11

Different in both good and bad ways. You are left very much alone with regards to the midwife etc. I think thats both good and bad even though the frequency of midwife visits here have been far more than in Sweden and, to begin with, really made me feel odd and more like a clinical experiment than a pregnant woman.

Thats one of the differences. Smile

kissyfur · 30/08/2012 12:12

Welcome skoggy!

I've got a heart scan for the baby tomorrow, all was ok at the first one they did at 20 weeks so fingers crossed all will be fine. Looking forward to seeing the little one again Smile

rowingdowntheriver · 30/08/2012 12:23

Welcome sloggy.

On the GTT, I had to have it because my last baby was big (10 lb 3 oz) and because I've had poly cystic ovaries in the past.

NervousAt20 · 30/08/2012 12:36

Welcome skoggy

Sophiathesnowfairy · 30/08/2012 12:42

Welcome to all the new additions. Xx

Elizadoesdolittle · 30/08/2012 12:47

I had to have the GTT as I had high glucose levels in my urine twice running. Got the all clear though so that's good. And even better I got my fit to fly letter from my GP yesterday so Marrakech here we come Smile fly when I'm 31 weeks. Only away for 3 nights (well officially 4 as we are staying at a hotel in gatwick the night before as have a really early flight). We booked it before I got pregnant so glad we can still go. DD is staying at my mums for 2 nights and in-laws for the other 2. I'm going to spend my time sleeping and lazing in the sun. Can't wait!

Good luck to those that have GT tests coming up and welcome to the new joiners (sorry forgot names and am on phone so can't check them!).

Bluetinkerbell · 30/08/2012 12:55

I had an appointment at the hospital this morning for a review with the consultant. It was one of her assistants. Had my 28 weeks bloods done. All is fine and they want to see me again at 34 weeks for a review and a scan.
Does this now rule out that I can have a home birth?
Quite looking forward to another scan, and glad they're monitoring me due to my history (losing DD2 at 20 weeks last year) but I would also like to have a home birth...
Should've asked... well seeing the midwife again in 2 weeks, so will ask her then.
