Detective it's NHS policy that maternity leave has to start on a Sunday. I'm not sure why but I had to change my date so that it is a Sunday.mthe union cannot change existing policy even though it may seem unfair. It's similar in that you have to have started mat leave on or before your EDD. You should also be able to split your OMP over the full 52 weeks now. I did this with my last pregnancy but it was awkward getting it sorted but this time it was actually easy to do as there was a part on the application form to tick!

My may leave is starting at 34 weeks as I could feel myself struggling ages ago. I'm glad of that now as with the pain I'm in it would have been impossible to work further. I am signed off sick just now but should actually be on annual leave from Monday and I will lose the days as you are not allowed to carry them over anymore so even tho I am technically able to claim them back as I have a sick line for them I cannot use them before end if holiday year so just lose them. It's crap but I don't think there is much I can do :-(

Those of you with older children than mine (19 months) could o have some advice please?!

DD appeared my bedroom this morning looking the most pleased with herself I have ever seen her - she had climbed out of her cot! Now, obviously I am grateful she didn't break her neck in the process, but the problem is I really don't think she's ready for a bed. She is all over the place when she sleeps - I put her in with her head at one end and she wakes up with the head at the other end, having slept on every inch of the cot in the process! I know they all fall out of bed when they first go in one but I can see it happening every 5 minutes here.
Also, on a selfish note, I have only just got her sleeping through the night and I'm not keen to disrupt that just yet.
But the only other solution i can think of involves chicken wire and duct tape!!

Any ideas? Mattress on the floor maybe?

Sorry for the epic post :)

applepieinthesky · 29/08/2012 12:00

What about something like this kirrin?

Evilwater · 29/08/2012 12:01

My first pasties, are up on Facebook. Hm... Nice.

izzy I spoke to HR (NHS) as I am off sick at the moment. She said if annual leave is booked, but sick leave is then required, it gets carried over to the next year . they can insist you start mat leave at 37 weeks if on pregnancy related sick leave. I would question that personally, and quite strongly. I cannot access all the policies at home, but if you get a chance plough through them, both Mat Leave and Sick Leave ones. They cannot discriminate against you. Good luck Smile

kirrin I bought foam things to go down the side of DDs beds. They are nice and soft, and you can take them travelling, although bulky. I have recently had to swap to pool noodles for DD2 (from pound shop) as DD2 got hers out from under the sheet and took bites out of them. I started them both on the floor, then in toddler bed without the feet on, then put feet on. I also had a mattress on the floor for the first few nights. I bet she was pleased with herself, and will now be safer in a bed rather than a cot. Have you got a gate at her door? If not, get one.

ValiumQueen · 29/08/2012 12:12

Purple daisy bed guard is what I got. Google it. You can sit on them to read stories, unlike the bed guards by Tomy, which did not fit the bed anyway.

Brockle · 29/08/2012 12:14

apple has a good suggestion. A bed, bed rail and babygate on her bedroom door are probably best. Getting her to sleep in her own bed before the baby arrives is a good idea so that you aren't dealing with a new bed and a new baby at the same time. Once they climb out of the cot it is time to say goodbye to it!

evil I want a pastie now Envy

Evilwater · 29/08/2012 12:25

Out of a matter of interest, I phoned my HR lot as to how much I'm going to get.
They havn't even done the paperwork. Angry I sent it to them ages ago! Gr..... At least I have pastie.

applepieinthesky · 29/08/2012 12:27

Maybe not the one I suggested then but some kind of bed rail is a good idea. Have a look around and see what other ones are available.

applepieinthesky · 29/08/2012 12:28

evil I now have a really bad pastie craving Envy

Izzybuzzybuzzybees · 29/08/2012 12:30

Thats interesting Valium. HR are no use at my trust and my manager is pretty useless too. I was thinking it may be worth contacting the union to see what they think. My manager said I couldn't carry any as not allowed to carry leave forward at all and HR said it was manager discretion but I may be able to carry one week. I work part time so a weeks leave is 2.5 days and I had four weeks booked! So would lose 7.5 days! But as it stands manager says none! It's a bit of a mess. My may leave starts at34 weeks anyway so pregnancy related sick leave wont change that as I guess I'll be on sick leave til mat leave was due to start. I can't really change the date now!

Izzybuzzybuzzybees · 29/08/2012 12:36

WRT bed rails we have just gotten a lindam one from the baby event in asda. It was £16 and looks quite good as it can be folded easily. Haven't tried it yet as my daughters new room isn't ready yet!

DesperateHousewife21 · 29/08/2012 12:36

kirrin ds is in a toddler bed which has built in bed guards on either side. He's never once fallen out the bed while asleep. He loves his bed, lies on it all the time talking to his duck!

Evilwater · 29/08/2012 12:37

Nhs are crap! I do wonder what they do at those desks!

ValiumQueen · 29/08/2012 12:44

I think NHS HR staff have to go on an extra course to be as twatish as they are. Similar to what receptionists in GP surgeries have to do I am guessing.

Izzybuzzybuzzybees · 29/08/2012 12:46

I think you've got it in one there valium!

ValiumQueen · 29/08/2012 12:47

Little Lamb nappies special offer - buy 6 one size fits all pocket nappies for £24 with free postage. Cerise only. I think you have to 'like' their FB page to see the offer, and they are rapidly running out. That is a good price at £4 each, as you do not need to buy extra wraps, and the inserts are included. I bought some. Do not need them. Cannot afford them. Expecting a boy, but he will be fine in pink. I am an addict Blush

kissyfur · 29/08/2012 12:48

kirrin we bought DD a ikea toddler bed that has sides at the head and foot ends and a gap in the middle, it's low down too. DD was like your DD is her cot and slept all over, used to end up with her head at the foot end etc, but since she's moved to a 'big girl bed' as she calls it Smile she has stayed with her head up the top end. She was 2.4 when we did the move though so a bit older than your DD

kissyfur · 29/08/2012 12:52

the car has broken down 150 miles from home. RAC are saying a minimum 2 hr wait as we're not "vulnerable" apparently a pregnant woman a disabled child and a young child don't count. DP has discovered a garage with a Londis down the rd so he is fetching "lunch" Urgh bloody cars!

ValiumQueen · 29/08/2012 13:12

tits rotten luck! I was considered a priority by Green Flag, and it was just me and bump.

kirrinIsland · 29/08/2012 13:34

Thanks guys - you're all ace!!
Plenty of ideas there - her cot converts to a bed, so I might do the mattress on the floor and then raise her gradually. Have got a baby gate to put on her door so that's a start :)
