We're on safari with the labour spotting signs... How long till the next baby arrives?

Pull up a birthing ball, sup some raspberry leaf tea and tuck into the 'big boy pineapple balti'. We're on the home straight!

Just a quick question before I forget:

Im 41 weeks on Tuesday when I see consultant to discuss inducing me. How soon do you think they will do it? Would they attempt to get me going before the following Tuesday when I would be 42 weeks?

alisonmcg · 03/09/2012 06:59

signet I think it varies depending on what area you live in. I'm in Edinburgh and I think here they let you go to 40+10 and induce you on the 10th day if nothing has happened by then!

NeedlesCuties · 03/09/2012 08:53

signet the hospital I had both DC in (is in Belfast, N. Ireland) only let women go to 40+10.

As a matter of fact I was booked into the induction clinic for today, but DD came last Wed following a sweep :)

susiegrapevine · 03/09/2012 08:58

Congrats justine see you in the post natal thread.

fairtradelu · 03/09/2012 09:00

Congrats justine!

Signet, here the policy is to let you go to 40+12. I guess it varies from place to place.

Labour dust to those others still waiting. It's Labour Day today - that has to be a sign, right?!

40+6

Nightfall1983 · 03/09/2012 11:05

Congratulations justine! Envy

Signet I know that how far over they let you go depends on area, varying between 10 and 14 days (unless you don't want to be induced and then you can opt for monitoring). Here in the East Mids it's +12 days...

Sweep today, MW coming to my house (first time ever) around lunch to do it. DH coming home to hold my hand...

Nightfall1983 · 03/09/2012 11:06

Ooh Labour day, good point fairtrade, very auspicious Wink

fairtradelu · 03/09/2012 12:12

Well, I've been stretched and swept and am pleased to report it wasn't all that bad. Unfortunately it would seem my baby has no intention of arriving any time soon - opening to the womb is still really far back and although MW could push baby's head it needs to drop further. She said it is highly unlikely anything is going to happen over next two days. So I've got another S&S booked in for thurs and then induction next Monday. Really hope things get moving soon - going from a totally natural water birth to an induction with epidural is a really rubbish scenario.

Does anyone know anything about acupuncture to induce labour? I may have to give it a try...

sc0ttishlass · 03/09/2012 12:47

Hi all congrats to all those with babies, what a lot of lovely names we have chosen!
For those still waiting sending that lucky labour dust! For me, I had a sweep due on the Wednesday that she couldn't do...but she said fact she had been 'in there' may have triggered something. On the Wednesday night mid sleep (so thursday now) at 3am I woke up with a minor period pain and definite 'show', and that was me until my beautiful baby was born at 402am on the Friday 24th August. In the end it was emergency section after a long labour, but I realise everyone was right that said it doesn't matter how they got here! He is called Finn Alexander Malluck and weighed a v healthy 9lb 8oz! We were in hops first 5 days so are just getting used to being at home.
Things I didn't know but do now? Who really cares what's in your hospital bag! You don't care abou being embarresed whilst in labour re doing the toilet etc. and..I'm finding breast feeding tougher than I thought it would be.
also enjoy these last few days as I haven't stopped since his arrival..the visions I had of how it would be are different and like people told me, that time after finishing work and before baby arrives is precious ;)
Look forward to news of more arrivals!
Xxxx

Nightfall1983 · 03/09/2012 13:17

I have also been swept. It was pretty sore but no-where near as bad as I'd feared. One thing that did concern me was how much it stung when I peed afterwards - and thats just after a finger, imagine after a whole baby comes through!!

She said I was partially effased and approx 1cm. Not imminent but heading in the right direction and hopefully won't take too long if I do end up being induced. I'm booked for an induction on Wednesday when I'll be 40 + 11 because they are full/busy on Thursday. Even though I was hoping not to be induced I actually feel very happy and excited about it being a bit sooner and getting to meet little one - fingers crossed baby decided to make an appearance even earlier.

I had a good smear of blood after the sweep and now (1 hour later) am feeling very very mild period-y pains. Who knows? I'm off to IKEA now, always means lots of walking...

Signet2012 · 03/09/2012 13:37

I haven't reallly given any thought to my thoughts on being induced because I was told early on I wouldn't carry full term and would likely go in early labour! Never thought that I would end up being overdue.

I guess I'll just see how I go tomorrow at consultants and take his lead.

Signet2012 · 04/09/2012 09:57

Getting induced Thursday !!'

Nightfall1983 · 04/09/2012 11:46

Signet how are you feeling about it? I'm very excited about being induced tomorrow now, but also very nervous about what it will be like...

Is it just me and Signet left? Are you still hanging on fairtrade and Ambi?

Signet2012 · 04/09/2012 12:59

I'm ok I think. I am pleased on one hand because I like plans as opposed to winging it. At the same time I'm a bit worried because they said it could take three days to get me started off properly and I'm terrified of hospitals so upset that I could be in that long. I was hoping for a night then home but it's also nice to know by Sunday I'll be a mum.

I just don't know what to expect Sad

hamncheese · 04/09/2012 15:27

Hey remaining mums to be! Hope your labours go smoothly. If you do expect to be in a while signet make sure and pack lots of snacks for on the ward. My brother brought me babybel cheeses which really hit the spot at 4am the first night! Oh and also eat well before you go in as they will probably try and make you not eat in labour. My empty stomach pains were almost as sore as the contractions by the 36th hour ha!! Good luck and hope to see you all soon on the other thread :D

Lovemarmite · 04/09/2012 15:57

Hi signet and nightfall and induction to be mummies.
I thought I would jump back on here and check to see how you're doing and offer some insight into the induction I was given to hopefully help?! The induction was not a bad experience and I was happily settled by the fact that they're just trying to bring you into labour.

I was given a pessary in the evening after an internal examination by a mw and stayed in a hospital bed, the mws were all lovely and the process seems pretty standard. As my first pessary didn't work, they gave me another mid morning after another examination. All hb monitoring is done for the baby and your uterus (for contractions) by an electronic monitor that is strapped onto your tummy. With the first pessary, the hb monitoring involved a 30 minute session to make sure you and the baby respond okay to it and then they did subsequent checks occasionally.
My second pessary didn't work and so a third was done in the evening. My DH had to leave the hospital at 9pm and I started to go into early labour at 9.45! However, luckily my early labour lasted for about about 1.5 hours and then DH was called back in just as I was transferred to the delivery suite at 4cms dilated.
My biggest unknown was what to expect once in labour and my pain threshold. I went in thinking that it was going to be painful and tried to keep at it and had a hospital tens machine on only and then after a lot of persuasion I took pain relief and tbh, I laid back and got to 10cms fully dilated without really feeling it!

Sorry if I am writing like a numpty! 4 hours sleep and no brain.
Good luck, really hope it goes well and you'll soon have your newborn cuddles!

fairtradelu · 04/09/2012 17:23

I'm still hanging on nightfall
I'm exactly one week overdue today, 1 S&S down, 1 to go on Thursday and then induction booked for Monday.

Thanks for your induction experience marmite, much appreciated. After my initial horror at the thought of being induced I am coming round to the idea. The pessary option would not be bad at all and, well, if it comes to bring drip-fed hormones to kick things off then so be it. I'm going to reread pain relief info as contingency for drip induction so I have a plan B come Monday.

Good luck for tomorrow signet. Make sure you pop back on here and let us know how it went!

fairtradelu · 04/09/2012 17:24

Oops, meant good luck for tomorrow nightfall and for Thursday signet!

frillylemons · 04/09/2012 18:55

I'm still here Smile Due to be induced next Tuesday...want to do it naturally, but getting desperate now Sad

Ambi · 04/09/2012 19:06

Good luck for tomorrow Nightfall x
Had second sweep today, it was the same mw as last week so she could tell me how accurate the change, sadly none, a fingertip but moved round slightly so not holding much hope for it work despite the aches and pains all day. My induction is Friday afternoon, I have my head around not getting the reduced drugs waterbirth I wanted and instead focusing on demanding all the drugs asap. I was induced last time, it wasn't all that bad (epidural was bliss) and I had DD at 7am and home by 5pm - would have been sooner if mws hadn't told DH I was staying in and he didn't bring the baby seat, I was ready to go by 1pm. But I had no complications, a few stitches but didn't feel them under the epidural.

Eviction notices have now been served eh?

Congrats Justine & Scottish. Thanks

Nightfall1983 · 04/09/2012 21:34

Ooh, sorry frilly didn't mean to forget you!

Well we are all on the home straight now anyway Smile I'm a bit up-and-down at the moment, excited about meeting baby, scared about being induced and just generally about giving birth. Also sad about the (probable) loss of my lovely water birth.

I've been going round doing (even more) organising today. Repacked my labour bag, just for the sake of it really. Also distributed nappies, outfits and cotton wool through out the house so there are some to hand whereever I am...

So: Signet Good luck for Thursday, Ambi Good luck for Friday, Fairtrade Good luck for Monday and Frilly Good luck for Tuesday

To all of you (us): Fingers crossed you go a bit earlier!! Grin

Signet2012 · 04/09/2012 23:51

Hope it goes well and quickly for you tomorow Nightfall. Try update when you can!

I will do the same Thurs, just been for some snacks and ,mags from tesco. Plan to strip and wash bedding tomorrow, have a nice long lie in, have a nice long bath and pamper a bit.

Clean all the house again, check freezer, repack hospital bag, write out dog care plan for dad then thats me!

Out at MIL tomorrow then DP has some friends coming round so will keep my mind busy tomorrow night, he did offer to have a movie and chill night but I think having some friends round that won't talk about babies all night might prove a welcomed distraction.

Off to walk the dog soon, being missing out on his walks lately as DP has being taking him to save me needing a wee but I love our little walks and I know I won't be taking him for a while as we walk him late on so he can get off his lead without people being about.

Quite sad tonight that its nearly over, after harrowing news prior to pregnancy and during first few months of my ability to carry a child I have to say I have had a really easy pregnancy and feel quite proud of my body. Think I will miss baby being just mine and feeling her little kicks and such.

Nightfall1983 · 05/09/2012 12:20

Thanks Signet.

I'm not in till 4pm. I had planning on staying in bed and trying to doze most of the day because I figured I'd struggle to sleep last night. In fact I slept reasonably last night, no worse than usual anyway but everytime I try to rest today I keep winding myself up about what's going to happen...

Am struggling to find a balance between "thinking positive" and "prepare for the worst and anything else will be a bonus". I'm just trying to focus on the goal now and whatever happens, happens but it's not really working. Going in at 4pm I figure it's quite unlikely that baby will be born before midnight but am hoping for sometime tomorrow - 06/09/12 would be a nice birth-date, maybe at 3 minutes past midnight: 00:03 06:09:12 Grin

fairtradelu · 05/09/2012 13:11

I was thinking 6/9/12 would be an ace birthday too nightfall. Unfortunately I thought it was Friday not tomorrow. I think chances of my LO arriving tomorrow are pretty much zero. Am going to have to go for a birthday twin with my grandma on Sunday instead. That's more likely, although I kind of feel like I am never going to give birth at this point!

Good luck with the induction later. Try and stay calm and focus on the prize! For all our plans for natural births, our babies seem to have different ideas and, just this once, we can't overrule them!!!

41+1 (and I never thought I'd be writing that!)

Signet2012 · 06/09/2012 01:14

Hope all is going well night fall. I can't sleep Sad nervous now !!
