We're on safari with the labour spotting signs... How long till the next baby arrives?

Pull up a birthing ball, sup some raspberry leaf tea and tuck into the 'big boy pineapple balti'. We're on the home straight!

eighties could be a sign but with my 1st my boobs leaked from 20 weeks they seem to have more control this time and I can only get stuff out if I squeeze.

Welcome ambi

Am very proud I cooked a roast for my sis and bil and grandad and dh and ds today and managed all by myself even though crouching down is getting more and more difficult. My grandad thinks I have grown outwards since I saw him friday! Arrggg I did notice more streatch marks :(

ham forgot to say sandy sounds perfect am mucho jelous!

Did some house cleaning as well - polishing which dh won't do and hoovering while dh scrubbed the cooker, sink and general kitchen yay! Just need to finish by hoovering the bedroom and sorting out washing oh and actually making up the moses basket which is sitting here all naked lol with the washed stuff in a bag in it to stop dcat getting in! Will have to replace with a soft toy when I make it up!

Dh is really plumping for tue! For baby! Well did have my 1st at 38 + 3 and will be 38 on tue but I told him its wishful thinking and its cursing it and if he keeps saying it I will still be pregnant in september.

susiegrapevine · 05/08/2012 22:33

Oh and good luck chic

PictureThis · 05/08/2012 22:41

That last thread seemed to fill up very quickly! 37 weeks tomorrow-yay and had a show tonight. Having a sweep on Tuesday by my Consultant and being induced next Monday so on countdown to goodbye bump. It makes me feel a bit sad actually as this will be my last pregnancy so I swing between wanting baby in the cot next to me and stopping and just enjoying the whole pregnancy bump, baby moving etc as I'm never going to experience this again. Had age been on my side we would have probably gone for number three but it's not so that's that. Anyway, i've marked my place so I'm going to go back to the start of this thread and catch up with everyone's goings on.

woopsidaisy · 05/08/2012 23:00

How is it possible that we are on thread 7?!
Good luck tomorrow chic.

Still absolutely no sign of anything happening here....39+5. Sigh.

ishopthereforeiam · 05/08/2012 23:03

Marking my spot on part 7 - wow! How many parts til all the babies are out!?

Will catch up on posts now (!)...

ishopthereforeiam · 05/08/2012 23:20

Thanks mrgereshamster for setting up the new thread - been a bit busy managing ds and dd (well actually dh manages dd!) and recovering so just catching up on lots of posts now.

Welcome to richmond

Lol @ frilly and the BJ - freudian Wink!

Re swaddling - we had swaddle blankets with dd but in the hospital the midwives were now very anti swaddling as apparently the advice has changed within the last month and now they advise against swaddling (as (i) it stops babies reflex and feeding needs and (ii) possibly contributes towards cot death!?). Was tempted to ignore as we swaddled dd and she was fine (thank God) but once someone mentions those two dreaded words I can't argue so ds sleeps with a blanket over him from teh chest down tucked into the sides of the mattress and arms free if that makes sense.

Re nursing bras make sure they are well fitted as if they are too tight they can ecourage milk supply and you could end up over producing which is v painful and can cause mastitis (as well as hard lumpy hot boobs)! And I agree with the fact you'll need something at night to prevent leakage Blush.

In other news have caught dd's sore throat and can't stop coughing with irrational fear this will somehow blow my stitches apart but it seems the c/s scar is healing nicely and not as unsightly as I'd thought.

Sweet dreams all.

hamncheese · 06/08/2012 00:51

rumors from the old thread re discharge I advan increase in quite wet discharge that seemed to come out in little gushes in the week or so prior to the birth so fingers crossed for you and anyone else getting it!

So this is long but will paste sandys birth story for anyone interested

Alexander's birth story

In the week before his birth I was experiencing period type pains and some back ache very low down, especially on the Sunday. During Tuesday night (38+4) I woke up twice with back ache. When I went to the toilet on Wednesday at 4am I got my show. Called maternity assessment as it was watery and pink so they asked me to see if it changed in an hour. During this hour I started getting mild back pains every 5 minutes. Went to maternity assessment and put on monitor baby was fine, midwife did speculum and internal found it was show, waters weren't gone and was surprised that I was 2-3cm dilated. Gave me a sweep while in to encourage contractions. Walked home and called my mum (other birth partner) to tell her. Contractions got worse and used tens which was really good for those early pains. Mum came over and the contractions seemed to be coming stronger and very painful in the back. When they were coming every few minutes went up again. However when I got there at 12 they found I was still only 3cm and not in established labor so went home. Laboured in the house from 1pm on Wednesday til 4am on Thursday morning. During this time I took cocodamol 3 times for the pain. The pain became very bad and while it was fine and manageable on the front and I could feel the cervix thinning, the back pains became unbearable. It was like being stabbed right round my lower back. Contractions were generally every 5-7 minutes and lasted about 2-3 minutes. At around 3am though I had an hour with none and then an epic one lasting 6 minutes which was the sorest thing I have ever experienced made me feel dizzy sick and shake. Decided was beginning not to cope so went up again. Was assessed and was 5cm dilated, contractions very irregular and while in established labour not progressing well. Turns out this is because baby was back to back which explained the horrific back pain. Blood pressure was a bit high and had protein in urine so they decided to send me to the labour ward to break my waters.

This is when it all went a bit insane. I had an awful midwife who was totally not compassionate and didn't care what I wanted. By this time my back pain was unbearable and I was writhing about with each contraction. The midwife acted like all hell was breaking loose and basically demanded I let her break my waters, put monitor on baby's head and give me the induction drip. It was all getting out of control so I tried gas and air which worked on front but hardly at all for back pain. The back pain came before contractions did but midwife wouldn't let me use it unless in a contraction despite me being in agony so I asked for an epidural. Got the epidural and was stabbed like a pin cushion with tubes all over etc as expected but finally got some relief from the back pain.

Then the horrible midwife went off duty thank god and I got a lovely midwife and a great student midwife. That was about 6am and by 10am I was fully dilated due to the drip but wasn't feeling too much in the way of pain due to epidural. Thankfully the midwife managed the epidural very well which I think is why it was successful, she got it topped up early enough that it wasn't as strong by pushing time. They gave me an hour to wait before pushing for baby to come down and turn a bit. Started pushing at 11am and was beginning to make progress, by almost an hour in baby's head was clearly visible but by this time the epidural was wearing off enough for my back pain to come back. It came to such an extent that I couldnt push as the back pain came just before the front pain and the pain in the back made everything all fuzzy and so I couldn't focus enough to know how to breathe etc when pushing. It got so bad that I asked them just to get the baby out as I couldn't manage the pain anymore. They topped up my epidural and slowly prepared for the registrar to come with forceps but told me I was to push while they got ready. As the epidural came back I was able to properly push and finally began making real progress and baby's head was really close to coming out. The registrar was ready but I kept asking for another contraction to try and avoid forceps. They gave me them and the midwife suggested an episiotomy which I would. Have needed anyway with forceps so she did it and on the next contraction his head came out, the next after that his shoulders and the rest and then he was on my chest! They put him under my gown and he just lay there making little sniffly noises and then the midwife was about to take him as he hadn't cried but then he did one cry and he stayed on me. Later he was taken for a minute to weigh etc, was exactly 7lbs, and they then gave him back to me and we cuddled while the placenta came which happened no bother and I was stitched up. He managed to root around and tried to latch on very early and managed a few sucks which was great, he now feeds amazingly which is probably done to that!! Then we got tea and toast and the person who brought it put him in the cot but I wolfed down the tea and got him back on me ASAP. Got a quick wash and was then taken to the post natal ward where he has been very content and easy going.

Weekipper · 06/08/2012 06:38

Wow Ham sounds like it was quite an experience! Boo to mean m/w Yay to nice m\w! I've woken up before 5 today with definite period pains so just mildly excited but your's and others' experiences have taught me not too get overly excited yet. In 2 minds whether to tell DH as I'm not sure he'd concentrate at work today. We've tickets for a show tonight and tomorrow! We booked them to give us something to do/think about in the lead up to EDD.

Thanks ishop and previous posters for info re:swaddling. DH was taught to swaddle as a student and has even changed nappies- compared to me who has only cuddled others' babies! Big learning curve for me coming.

hamncheese · 06/08/2012 07:59

That's good you've got things to do while waiting kipper you never know about the period pains. Mine came to something but not immediately so here's hoping you are getting ready and shouldn't be too long. Also don't worry about the learning curve it swings very steeply up from novice to good! I'd basically never held a baby before and as soon as I got him I just knew what to do and have become really competent holding changing and all that in just a few days. Plus the midwives will show you anything practical like bathing and swaddling on the post natal ward :)

Really want home now... Fingers crossed baby's bloods come back good and we get out this morning. Want my own bed as only had 4 hours sleep. Milk is coming in and that plus stitches are oww

fairtradelu · 06/08/2012 08:08

Hello all, just marking my place on the new thread. I'm 37 weeks tomorrow and starting to think about the end game. Hospital bag more or less packed. I have two questions about it though:

  1. What music do people recommend? I can't decide whether to go with very calm songs, calm sounds (ie yoga cd) or music to shout along to, or all three!

  2. My Grandma has crocheted a lovely shawl for the baby. It is truly beautiful. Should I take this into the hospital? Part of me wants to use it to wrap baby up in and part of me is worried it'll get mucky and yucky if it's in hospital. What do people think?

Good luck to those showing early signs of labour. I've had nothing yet although I think bump is finally starting to drop, whoop!

MrGeresHamster · 06/08/2012 08:19

Ham wow that sounds like an epic birth story. It really sounds like your Midwifes attitude can make a really big difference to your experience. I hope you get to go home today.

Fairtrade I am taking my iPod in with me with two playlists, one is calming music and the other is music I love to dance to, in case I need an energy boost! I have two shawls one made by my mum for baby and the other was made by my grandma when I was born. Both are staying at home as firstly I don't want them to get too dirty and not be able to clean them straight away and also I would hate it if they went missing for any reason. Figure it's just not worth it and they'll wait a few days till baby cones home. I have packed two large Muslim squares and a basic white blanket.

So, yesterday's curry, sex, walk had no effect. The pains I has yesterday didn't keep me awake during the night and have stopped today. Starting to think I'm going to go overdue. DH keeps on moaning about going to work and is wanting his 'time off' aka paternity leave. Trying hard not to slap him for this!

39+6 today... not so patiently waiting anymore... Sad

susiegrapevine · 06/08/2012 08:26

Just a quick note re swaddling. Me and dh were not sure if it was safe or not with ds. Did a bit of internet research and made our own conclusion that it seemed to be ok for day time naps but not overnight as you cannot watch them. However and don't ask me how dh worked out how to swadle with a muslin to get ds off to sleep at night but do it in such a way that the muslin could be gently removed later!! As I said don't ask how I never got to grips with it!

frillylemons · 06/08/2012 08:49

Wow Ham! All power to you!! Well done Smile

MeGere, my DH seems to have similar feelings about paternity leave, even talking about using it to help a friend do some gig stuff Angry Angry Frilly Angry I know it'll be different once baby here...I hope! He also seemed to think that matleave was a holiday for me. Naff off!! He is beginning to see that I am really struggling so has stopped making sarky comments Smile

Well, today I must do the Asda shop. No other plans but don't want to get bored so will see if I can see DSis and her LO Smile

If anyone has time passing ideas, let me know please!!!

ishopthereforeiam · 06/08/2012 09:09

fairtrade i would take the blanket as it would be nice (sentimental?) for baby to come home wrapped in it? Perhaps don't use it overnight etc but just put it on baby's lap etc in car seat / over baby during teh day?

weeki exciting - sounds like baby could be on its way soon!

ham an hour's pushing - were you sick after? I pushed for 1h 40 with dd and was exhausted (and then sick but maybe that was from the epidural!)... Fingers x'd for good bloods so you can get home!

Not posting birth stories here as don't want to scare people but happy to answer any questions and the main thing is with both my two drama babies they were fine in the end just a struggle for them initially!

Lovemarmite · 06/08/2012 09:37

Wow Ham, I felt I was with you through it all. A good insight but not sure I can take too many insights!

After all my pains last week, nothing recently, just heavier, bigger movements and I think LO takes after me and will be late Wink. If she comes on Saturday, she'll be like her daddy and a real time keeper but seeing I've corrupted him now, no chance!
39+2

We're taking a simple white blanket with us and a couple of muslins. I don't think we'll take anything apart from one cardi that has been handmade just in case anything went missing on the ward or we were daft enough to forget or lose a bag. We've bought a lovely swaddle and so may take that though as it's shaped for swaddling and looks a bit easier than a muslin square.

Frilly I've started to do a patchwork quilt and it's great to do when you need to sit and relax and not just watch TV. YouTube has some good videos on how to do it. No one could ever describe me as home maker but this has been a really great to do for LO - it's made of all cotton, with winnie the pooh, kittens, dots, stripes etc all in purples, yellows and pinks. I am really wanting to get most of it done before she arrives and have probably just done under half of it in a few weeks.

Hope everyone has a good Monday! x

tumblebug · 06/08/2012 10:02

Hi, a bit late I know but can I join you? 1st day maternity leave and don't know what to do with myself! ( actually loads to do just can't quite get motivated). This will be dc2, due on the 20th (38 weeks today). Looking forward to it now - had mc last year so kept expecting things to go wrong, then been so busy with ds, work and moving house (last week!!!) that I haven't had much time to think about actually having a new baby.

I think I'll get up now and sort the last bits for my hospital bags!

The3Bears · 06/08/2012 10:11

Wow ham well done, it sounds like you did great through your labour. Really hope you and sandy manage to get home asap I couldnt sleep at all on the postnatal ward and couldnt wait to be home and I was only there for 1 night so really feel for you :)

I've been trying to keep really busy myself. Saturday I painted shed and fence in garden that needed re doing :) and painted kitchen door, Sunday we took ds to a farm which was so fun, then did lots of washing and ironing and painted my toenails! and today we were going to plant some seeds in the garden and give the pram another clean if the weather brightens up. DP has not been happy that I will not just sit down and relax but I just find myself more anxious and bored if I do that and wishing baby would arrive at least if im busy it keeps my mind of all things baby Grin have been getting alot more BH's but not reading into any of it and havent been having my RLT either but baby will be here soon enough anyway, feel alot more relaxed and calmer not thinking 'is this it' etc.

Hope everyone is well today, Im also taking a white knitted blanket to hospital, a muslin blanket and a little cardigan, 2 baby gros and 2 baby vests shouldnt need any more and dp will have to come back home anyway so easy to get some more.

woopsidaisy · 06/08/2012 10:26

Hi tumblebug.
I am mightily impressed that you have been one of the "moving house whilst pregnant" people. I am in awe of you all!

Both DSs in camp this week, until 4 & 4.30 pm! Bliss. I'm off to lie on the sofa and watch the Olympics. And pretend I can feel things starting...39+6.

woopsidaisy · 06/08/2012 10:27

Forgot to say wow to Ham. You did well lady....DS1 was back to back. I remember thinking about jumping out the window at one stage. 'Tis no fun. Hope you get home today with Baby Alexander.

Weekipper · 06/08/2012 12:42

Welcome Tumblebug!

My baby is back to back more of less. It's moved round a wee bit but still more back than front! I find stretching over my ball or sitting and doing figure of 8s helps ease normal sore bits.

So since this morning I'm uncomfortable but the aches are moving around my bump not just one specific place. Been distracted myself trying to clean windows, but I'm annoyed that they're smeary so sat down to search mumsnet for tips and then got further distracted ordering some last minute bits like a raincover for the car seat. wonders what it would be like to live somewhere with less rain

Lovemarmite · 06/08/2012 12:53

Hi tumblebug and lovely to meet you! BrewBiscuit

How do you know if your LO is back to back?
I think my one is too sometimes as I feel feet out the side on the right but sometimes I can feel the feet (or what I think is feet) is on the left side too.
I fail to sleep on the left side as I can only sleep on the right for some reason. I will lie there at night on the left and just be awake and so after an hour or so, say sod it, must turn over and then I drift off and so that tip to get LO in best position is not going to work for me.
Do you know if you go on all fours and over the ball, will that get baby to turn?

Also one more thing, I am a little concerned - has everyone been doing perineum massage?
I haven't as I can't really reach it and today it feels very achey! Blush sorry if TMI!

miaboo · 06/08/2012 13:16

I am so Envy of all the ladies that are managing to get out and about and do things! I had a ok couple of days where he didnt trap nerves half as much and I could walk abit and it felt lovely to be normal again!
Now he's at it again :(, feel like a crappy mother to my 5 and 1 year old especially the eldest as he's off school and I cant even manage the park, did the manage the cinema and pizza hut with him last week, tomorrow he's going to a friends house and for wednesday I've saved up aload of bottles, boxes etc and we are going to do some junk modelling as he loves making things, just abit gutted really as all I want to do is move without it hurting!!

ffscatmove · 06/08/2012 13:49

Welcome tumblebug!
Marmite have been trying to do perineal massage but can't reach to do exactly as described in NCT handout (supposed to use both thumbs but seriously, how is that possible? I mean, I'm quite flexible but seriously!?) Have settled for rubbing the oil into the .. ahem.. 'area' and trying to breath whilst stretching as described but using just one thumb. Clear as mud?
I'm petrified of tearing badly so am only doing it to make myself feel better really!
Sorry to hear you're so uncomfy Mia, hopefully not long now.
Have given up sign spotting here, there is blatantly nothing happening!

Whiteangel · 06/08/2012 14:21

Sympathies Miaboo. I'm so sore today I can hardly move from one seat to another. Woke up in a foul mood and nothing is cheering me up. Starting to give up hope of this baby ever coming out. Maybe I'll be the first woman in history to be pregnant forever! 40+4!

Gan24 · 06/08/2012 14:52

This is the first time I've found this talk forum thingy, not sure where I've been but I've really enjoyed reading it! I'm due on Friday with my first baby but am already feeling frustrated as I can't go very far with pelvic pain and my midwife booked me in for a sweep 10 days after my due date. Just feels like its never going to arrive!! Do you know anything that really works for bringing on labour, am taking raspberry tablets, pineapple etc but no sign yet. Just lots of bh's!!! Thank you !! Xxx
