We're on safari with the labour spotting signs... How long till the next baby arrives?

Pull up a birthing ball, sup some raspberry leaf tea and tuck into the 'big boy pineapple balti'. We're on the home straight!

I found sweeps worse than uncomfortable and would definitely always have dh with me for any future ones although I am not planning on any more.

I forgot to add that baby geek is a girl.

And for all those waiting for positive birth stories, I was very happy to have one of that type!

I had had my second sweep the day before it all kicked off.
Just before 8pm, my waters broke. Just as my consultant had predicted.

We then quickly dashed to the hospital to be monitored. All was well but my period type pains were irregular. I refused an internal exam at the mention of the word speculum and we were discharged at midnight. The plan was we were to be back in the morning to see the consultants .

At 6am I decided to go back early even if the pains didn't feel like contractions. They were all lower down but becoming unbearable. I had had paracetamol at 3 am and it didn't seem to help.

We still didn't see a doc till 8. By then I was moaning the ward down. The doc did an internal, found out I was 6 cm dilated and the rest happened really quickly and is a hazy memory.

I was instantly given gas and air. Then offered pethidine which I accepted.

I then wanted to poo really bad and the midwife encouraged me to. When the head started descending I was worried I wasn't pushing hard enough. :D Its a strange feeling. I started by pushing the poo canal and somehow realized there was another thing to push.

Crowning was the hardest part for me but I sucked really hard on that gas! ! And out she popped! I did try to pant but failed...

Labour was about 18 hours if I count it from when waters broke. I pushed for about 2 hours or so.

It was the one day my consultant was off duty. I really missed her.

We were kept in for obs and sent home the next day.

And that's baby geek's birth story told.

Signet2012 · 28/08/2012 20:32

If one more person tells me to have sex, eat a curry or bathe in pineapple I might just have to punch them! Im only just on my due date. Turned mother red earlier by telling her that I had not had sex for the last 25 weeks and do not intend to start now! I don't like curry and I ain't paying tesco prices for pineapple!

Lord!

She is an inch away from donning a headlight and going in herself to pull her out by her nose I swear!

That sounds like a nice birth story Geek. I am hoping he doesn't want to give me a sweep - I don't like the sound of it much. :(

I literally have had two smears in my life and that is the only mucking about I have ever had so the full "everyone seeing my bits" part is a bit too much for me much more worrying than pain of labour etc. I think I will be so embarrassed!!! I'm even shy with DP (cover myself up when I'm getting undressed etc) reading that its a wonder I'm in this position in the first place really.

fairtradelu · 28/08/2012 21:50

I'm hoping to avoid a sweep as well signet. I am also feeling a little uneasy at the thought of displaying my nether regions to random people but suppose you get over that quickly when in labour. Still, I am hoping to avoid a sweep if poss. I've got my next MW app on thurs so will discuss it then but def don't want any intervention until Monday at the earliest. By then I may be willing to go through anything to get the baby out but right now thought of sweep is a lot worse than thought of staying pregnant a little longer!

Only 2 hours left of due date. Not much chance of a due date baby now!

MrsMigginslovespies · 28/08/2012 22:07

Hello ladies,

Just thought I'd finally pop on and say howdy and hope you're all doing ok. I've been super-emotional over the past few days and am finally settling into being at home (got home Sunday afternoon).

So, I'll give you my birth story. I think I'd mentioned that I'd had a couple of sweeps (the first of which was HIDEOUS) last week (on Mon and Wed). Well, on Tues, I had a trickle of waters. Went into hospital, but they couldn't confirm if they were or not. So went home. Wed 0430, waters definitely burst and I started contractions 30 mins laters. Went back into hospital at 0730 and stayed there until 1130, contracting etc. It suddently started to get a lot worse and painful and I was throwing up a lot, so back again into hospital at 1330. I was one of those women you see in films who are contracting away in the car, hubby driving very carefully! It then all went a bit downhill to be honest. Baby had somehow turned round again to being back to back. I've got a lot of scarring and adhesions from all the surgery, so it was incredibly painful. I wasn't dilating at all, so by 7.30, was begging for an epidural that went in at 10pm. Then it all went a bit better, but again, not dilating enough, so oxytocin drip went in. Still only 4cm by 0300, so talk started of cs etc. Lots of epidural top ups, more drugs etc and hurrah, by 1000, was dilated enough. Started pushing at 1100 but baby's heartbeat was slowing, so forceps came out and he was born at 1154. An epic 31 hour labour that frankly was horrible and traumatic for us both. But we got through it and I'm totally in love with my baby boy! All my amazing hospital and labour bag packing didn't get used at all but I was glad to know had I needed something, they were all there. The staff did laugh at my poor DH dragging them all around the place like a sherpa!

Poppysnoss, I didn't get to use the pool, but the staff and care at the BGH were second to none. I had my own room as wanted some privacy etc and they couldn't have been more supportive. You'll be grand there!

Anyhoo, off to bed for hopefully some sleep before the night-time feeding. SOrry about the long post, but wishing you all luck and hugs and see you on the other side! xx

Nightfall1983 · 28/08/2012 22:12

Another one who is uneasy at the thought of a sweep here. I've only ever had one smear - that was in the lead up to TTC, it was fine but so embarrassing! I was offered a smear at tomorrows MW appt but declined. I will have one monday if no sign but would really like to have a baby this weekend please!

I assume that when I'm actually in labour I'll be less... timid.

Just got back from swimming, nothing new 40 + 3

hamncheese · 29/08/2012 08:09

Hey everyone still on this side... Just had a wee catch up on what you are all up to. Sorry to see those who expected to have had by now are still waiting. In regards to due dates I remember someone mentioning that in other places they don't give a EDD they just say "start of August" or similar which is probably a good idea. Sandy came 9 days early which is interesting as that was the date that I predicted before 12 week scan based on my cycle, but the scan changed the dates. Have heard estimating based on scan is highly unreliable so if I have another I'm going to trust my cycle!

Hope you arent all feeling too uncomfortable :( looking forward to seeing you on the other thread ASAP! Life for me at the moment is a blur of breast feeding and sling wearing but it is great. Sandy was 7lbs at birth, dropped a bit and at 3.5 weeks was 9lbs3oz!!! What a porker I'm so proud of him!

Nightfall1983 · 29/08/2012 12:50

All fine at the midwife today, she had difficulty working out what position babe is in but thinks that the back is to my right-hand side. Head down though ofcourse - phew - and still only about 2/5 engaged.

I was lying on my back for so long whilst she was prodding that I came over really badly dizzy and sick and still feel rubbish though Sad. Also getting a few bad period type pains, don't think anything is happening though, think it's just to add to the misery...

MW is coming to my house on Monday to do a sweep - anyone else have this? She's never been here before, do I kind of lie on the sofa? On a bed? Is it done sitting? Confused

justine09x · 29/08/2012 14:20

Either bed or sofa will do bed is probably better as u have to lay flat with your feet together an let your knees drop lol.

Bored bored and more bored here due date on Friday feel a bit cheated as was 38 weeks with dc2, hubby's birthday today so would make a nice pressie if she decided to make an appearance!!

Louper · 29/08/2012 14:25

Hello all, congrats to the mums and dads of lots of babies now born now on a catch up of the thread! Commiserations to all those still waiting... I'm 40+6 now, it's getting really rather dull. Somehow I never expected to be hanging around still, most babies in my family have appeared early.

2 sweeps (not that bad really, like a smear test but perhaps a bit more uncomfy, prob easiest done with you lying on bed Nightfall) and NOTHING whatsoever is happening - except that I get fatter and fatter and more uncomfy/immobile and more and more sleep deprived... seems so mean to stop you sleeping before they've even arrived! Am told baby is well positioned and well engaged, but the condition of my bits is still 'entirely unfavourable' (!).

M/W appt tomorrow to provisionally book induction, that chucks all my hopes for local maternity unit low intervention labour out the window sigh.

Still chin up, what can we do? I'm going blackberrying if it ever stops raining... hang in there y'all, they've got to come out eventually!

fairtradelu · 29/08/2012 17:51

That's the spirit louper. Fingers crossed your baby makes an appearance ASAP so you have a chance of having the birth you want.

I'm only one day overdue but feel so calm and unlike I am going to give birth soon that I really can't imagine anything happening for days. I do have pregnancy yoga tonight so maybe some random positions will spark something (wishing!)

To everyone still waiting, may I recommend a trip to the cinema to see The Wedding Video. Saw it this afternoon. Absolutely hilarious and a welcome break from waiting for baby. Plus it is only just over an hour and a half long so us heavily pregnant ladies can make it through without too much discomfort! Bonus :)

quickchat · 29/08/2012 21:01

I had a very very hot madras tonight............nothing, except a very very hot throat. Not even a braxton hick.

Thought id share just to spare others from experience. Sad.

Ambi · 29/08/2012 23:45

I've been so uncomfortable for the last few hours and been getting mild contractions for a bit. Fingers crossed it leads to something more.... God I really hope so.

alisonmcg · 30/08/2012 08:25

Hi everyone, finally a chance to pop on here to let you know that my wee girl Laila was born on the 25th, her due date! After a 24 hour labour she joined us, 8lbs 8oz!

Unfortunately due to having to have emergency surgery after the birth and being out of it for her first night we had to make the heartbreaking decision to let her be bottle fed. Tried several times since to get her on to the breast but it just causes her distress so have had to admit defeat and let her be bottle fed. Feeling really guilty about it as though I've let her down. Especially when everyone always goes on about how they really need to be breastfed. This might be a question for the postnatal thread but has anyone else had to decide to bottle feed when the plan had been to breastfeed? If so how have you felt about it?

I've not read through the thread for a while so congratulations to any other new arrivals out there and good luck to those still waiting!! X

alisonmcg · 30/08/2012 08:35

Just had a quick look through the last few posts and just wanted to say to signet i was exactly the same about the embarrassment factor, even with DP too but I can assure you that when the time comes you will genuinely, genuinely not give a damn at all! I had bikini bottoms on to begin with then when I had to take them off so they could check my progress I refused to put them back on and was just going in an out of the pool commando! Then when it came to the pushing stage, despite strict instructions before hand that DP was to absolutely stay at my head, when it came to it it was the last thing on my mind and I couldnt care less that he ended up watching the whole thing from the scary end! So honestly, as hard as it might be to imagine at the moment, please dont worry about it, all thoughts of embarrassment will go out the window with the first contraction! Grin

susiegrapevine · 30/08/2012 11:03

signet I echo what alison said. I had given birth but my nightie was getting in the way of skin to skin with my baby so at the end I was completely naked and didn't give a damn. The lovely midwives also wiped all the blood and gunk off me with baby wipes so I didn't have to jump in the shower straight away. They've seen it all before anyway.

pintofmilk · 30/08/2012 12:56

Hi all, just logging in to say that mini pint finally arrived on Tuesday 28th at 12:17pm. She weighed 9lbs and 6oz! Started off at home then had to transfer to hospital. But all well.

I was 41+2. Will post whole story later. Good luck and labour dust to all still waiting. Smile

NeedlesCuties · 30/08/2012 14:11

Just popping on quickly to say THAT SWEEP WORKED! Went into labour 10 hours after the sweep and baby Lydia was born at 4am the next morning (29th Aug) :)

Am home now, 2.5 year old DS is smitten but doesn't really understand why she can't talk yet Grin

Signet2012 · 30/08/2012 14:34

Oo more babies!!

Can't be many of us left waiting now.

Congratulations everyone x

That's so reassuring that your sweep worked!!

Had a good old moan to midwife today about Spd and sciatic pain so I had a sweep at maternity day unit at 7.30 this evening and I was 4cm!??? Apparently this is normal for a 3rd baby, waters were bulging and was very soft and thinned out so here's to hoping it works!!!

Nightfall1983 · 31/08/2012 10:57

So its September tomorrow and for the first time I really want things to start happening. Thought it might be kicking off last night as woke up feeling ridiculously warm, nauseous and tummy achy but feel fine this morning. Possibly developing slight back ache and occasional but very mild period pains...

Poppysnoss · 31/08/2012 11:54

Me too, Nightfall. I'm now on my due date and have been getting calls from everyone and their dog to see if there's any news. (Other two pregnancies never reached due date)

I really wanted baby to be born in August, but it's getting less likely by the hour...

Sigh...

woopsidaisy · 31/08/2012 13:49

In case anyone is still interested, I gave birth to baby boy number 3 on 20th. 10lbs 12 oz! He has been a dream, and we all adore him! Especially his big brothers. Think I got a wee smile today...he just makes me melt!
Hang on in there ladies, I was 12 days overdue. You are so much better to go naturally, once you start down the intervention road it is harder to stay in control of things, I think anyway.
GOOD LUCK!!!!

Nightfall1983 · 31/08/2012 16:26

Aww sorry to hear that poppysnoss why did you want an August baby? Ive been after a September little one, I'm keen for things to get going now as I assume it'll take a while from first twinge to birth as its my first one. Also since Operation September Baby has (hopefully) been a success, and I'm 41 weeks tomorrow I know it's time for Operation Natural Birth to begin in ernest - I've only got 5 days left!!

Nightfall1983 · 31/08/2012 16:27

Oh and congratulations woopsi! Enjoy those baby snuggles...
