Thread 3; go!

Hello - finally joining this thread after lurking forever. I'm 40, and after an early MC last year, thought I would never get another BFP. It finally happened, after a nice holiday, while the GP was doing busy referring us for infertility investigations...

i'm using One Born... etc as research for the big event. i figure watching the different stories unfold is a good way to be prepared for any outcome.

i like to be prepared, and my mum is already joking that i'll be googling stuff during labour if i dont know what it is....and my friend laughed when i showed her my excel spreadsheet of everything i need to get and do before baby arrives Blush

preggofabulous · 14/09/2012 20:27

godzookey - i think it will be one of things where when you find the right one you'll just know, if you see what i mean, lol. that instant 'clicking'. Well, i hope it is, for you, anyway.

good luck Smile

PixelCarrier · 15/09/2012 06:45

I started my spreadsheet for the baby 2 days ago preggo, so laughed when I saw your comment about it.

Good to see everyones news on their scans, and welcome apple.

I think a doula could be a great support, but totally agree that if they create an atmosphere by being combative, they shouldn't be doing that job. I think it's great to have the continuity of support they bring, and someone championing what you want for the birth. But I also know that the pressure for interventions doesn't come because hospital staff just want to do fancy things, but because they are concerned that you have a healthy baby at the end of it all. So if you're all working for the same outcome, the staff supporting you and your baby (whether doula or midwife or obstetrician) should all work together in the end.

CreepyCrawly · 15/09/2012 10:25

Morning all! Glad to see the lovely scan news is still coming in.

DH is still yet to feel movement, but I can actually see her moving now which is very odd. Fascinating though, I can't take me eyes off my tummy.

Could someone also update my age on the list too please? I'll just mess the whole thing up. Im 22 today :)

MamaMary · 15/09/2012 13:32

Hello all!

I personally don't see the point of doulas Blush and agree that some of them I've seen on OBEM seem to just get in the way - but that's just my perception and if the mum-to-be feels more comfortable having one, then she should have one!

I think watching OBEM is actually quite a good preparation for giving birth although nothing prepares you I still watch it and there is nothing more wonderful and emotional than that moment the baby arrives.

salt1 · 15/09/2012 13:36

last minute panic - we are flying later and i suddenly wondered if it is safe to go through the metal detector things, what have others done? x

MarasmeAbsolu · 15/09/2012 14:08

i never stopped to think about the metal detector thing!
Been flying regularly up to 28 weeks last time - was fine.

OBEM - I just cannot watch it, it makes me want to rock in a dark corner. I have noise, and even more so, labour ward noises. And 4 days of induction on a busy ward last time pretty much tipped me over the edge.

I have finally relented and bought a dreamgenii pillow - we'll see if it's good!

happyhow · 15/09/2012 14:27

There are absolutely no problems with airport scanners. They give off the tiniest amount of radiation - you'd need to be going through them hundreds and hundreds of times for there to even be a remote chance of anything harming the baby. Don't worry!!

I'm going to buy a dreamgenii pillow this afternoon... Normal pillows have been working ok but they take up so much room!

I'm in a cleaning/tidying/throwing out mood today. I'm hoping it will last til tomorrow too so that I can completely over haul the flat!!

Happy Birthday Creepy!!

MarasmeAbsolu · 15/09/2012 14:55

happy come to our flat once you are done with yours!
It is starting to look like a horder's paradise :(

(it is the problem when moving from a smallish house to a biiig flat - you spread, you spread, you think it is ok, and one day... bahm! the sheer amount of crap you have accumulated hits you in the face, along with the fact that you are still to start the renovation work which are so much needed. Or maybe it's just us ;) )

Birdies · 15/09/2012 15:54

Godzookey we're going to Windermere tomorrow - is the Beatrix Potter place worth a visit then? What about with our little DD?

Good news on scans as well, looks like most of us have had them now.

My DH is my doula, he was great last time! And my mum. Last time one was holding the gas and air and one was passing me water. Oh and my mum was also I'm charge of apologising for my swearing Grin

Can't believe how many of you are moving house, it's such an exciting time. I loved looking round houses and choosing (not so keen on the packing and unpacking bit though....)

Pascha · 15/09/2012 17:51

I've been to a Ploughing Match this afternoon Grin The things I do for a 2 year old's birthday, honestly!

Saw my MW yesterday and spoke about home birth. She said my iron levels need to be nice and high at my 28week bloods (which they were before - 13.1) and obviously baby needs to be facing the right way, otherwise there's nothing else to consider. They have all 3 community MW teams aware of me so that whenever I go into labour there will always be 2 MWs available to look after me. She asked about length of labour last time and said I can expect it to take half to two thirds of the time, so that means I'm looking at a 3.5 to 5 hour labour this time. Hooray!

mrsbugsywugsy · 15/09/2012 20:48

Happy Birthday Creepy! Oh to be 22 again Grin

Salt I went through the metal detectors, I think they are fine as it doesn't send radiation through you, unlike say an x-ray.

Octane that's great that you can have a tour of your maternity ward. Apparently our hospital no longer allows pregnant women to come in just for a look around. I find the idea of going somewhere completely unknown to give birth quite scary, and this is one of the reasons I am hoping to have a homebirth. Do you mind me asking why you are considering a c-section (apologies if you've said before)?

godzookey I think doulas sound like a great idea, I'd have one if I could afford one! Although I'm lucky in that I have family close by, so I don't really feel like I need one, if you know what I mean.

newbie6 · 16/09/2012 10:02

Hi all

Does anyone else have rib pain? My left side is really sore, just under my left boob?? It was sore last night I was finding it hard to sleep and now it's more like a constant dull ache, as if it's bruised? The right side is fine? I'm 21 plus 6 so not sure if it's the baby or just muscles being stretched or something else so thought I would ask you wise ladies!

X

Pascha · 16/09/2012 12:15

Rib pain is common in the 3rd trimester when baby is sitting high and all your organs are squashing upwards and pushing the ribs out but its a bit early for that. I would put money on it being bruised/stretched ligaments or something.

Mind you, I felt movement above my bellybutton for the first time this morning so its obviously moving on up (I'm 25 weeks now though).

godzookey · 16/09/2012 18:45

hi Ladies,

Bit of an SOS call from me - do you know if you can take Immodium when pregnant, stupid leaflet with the pack says consult your pharmacist - I'm feeling DESPERATE for some relief -I seem to have got an attack of IBS big time as had the same symptoms on Friday night too

If anyone could let me know asap, that would be much appreciated Blush

Birdies definitely go to Beatrix Potter in Bowness with your DD, she'll love it, it's adorable for kids and adults!!

Brugmansia · 16/09/2012 18:53

I'm afraid I don't know godzookey.

I've gained loads of baby stuff this weekend. I answered an ad on Freecycle and was successful. DP picked it up yesterday. I haven't worked out what there is yet in total, but there seems to be a carry cot, normal cot, bouncy chair, high chair, bath, car seat and something else that is packed up but may be a travel cot.

MarasmeAbsolu · 16/09/2012 21:10

godzookey - no idea on immodium, but I would call NHS24 if you are in a bad way!

mrsbugsywugsy · 17/09/2012 00:22

godz i've got a feeling you shouldn't take it. i had a bad tummy bug when i was first pregnant and the dr advised me to just drink lots of water to avoid dehydration.

BuntyCollocks · 17/09/2012 01:06

Hi all, just back.

godz - pharmacist said yes to immodium, my midwife said a resounding no after consulting the nhs website.

How was the holiday bunty?

Good to have you back with us.

Pascha · 17/09/2012 07:31

Morning. I am eating cake in bed after DS kept us up for 3+ hours in the night with a sore throat. Hope you had a good holiday Bunty

Pascha · 17/09/2012 08:30

Have decided we can't justify the expense of getting to Earls Court for the Baby Show at the end of october. Boo. Sad

Buuuuuuttttt...

There is another baby show for anyone nearish to Bluewater - Baby & Toddler show 5-7 Oct use code BT03 two for one adult entry - £12 altogether inc booking fee!

Much easier and cheaper for us and free parking.

I sound like a saddo now, I know.

BuntyCollocks · 17/09/2012 10:11

Thanks, pascha and prickly.

Had a lovely time, apart from the flight back - DS refused to sleep until the last hour, and so was a screaming, over-tired nightmare. Sticking to Europe for the foreseeable, especially with madam being added into the mix next summer.

Oh, how I miss bluewater. :( shopping up here is shit compared to London.

Anyone else not felt kicking yet? We could see her moving at the 20 week scan and the sonographer said everything was fine. I think I'm just doing it wrong..

Pascha · 17/09/2012 10:40

Where are you Bunty (roughly). Katolla is your placenta anterior?
