Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Sophiathesnowfairy · 21/06/2012 13:07

Am just abut to leave for my 20 weekend!

Sophiathesnowfairy · 21/06/2012 13:09

Oh dear I wish the I pad wouldn't try and pre empt what I am trying to say, I meant 20 weeker! See you all later Wink

TheDetective · 21/06/2012 13:54

Oh dear. Appointment after scan did not go well. I wasn't emotionally prepared for it as I had declined Consultant care, or to see any doctors. So I wasn't expecting a consultant to walk in and make me feel like an absolute dickhead because I'm having a home birth. DP couldn't sit down he was so angry, I thought he was going to burst a vessel or something.I'm still angry now.

I'm off to fester in my own annoyance for a bit.

DonnaDoon · 21/06/2012 15:09

Oh dear Detective I had that... is it because you had a c section last time ? I was threatened with foetal death and all sorts...crap isnt it?

MrsSkinnyLegs · 21/06/2012 15:19

Thanks for your thoughts ladies, I'm back at home after a night on history's noisiest ward. Doctor didn't see the point in 'poking around down there' today so he wants to wait until Monday when I'm booked for my 20 week scan and a repeat cervical scan. I was all for cable-tying everything in sight, he suggested I go home and warm the sofa instead :)

So I think that's good...am keeping everything crossed though!

mrswee, how are you today?

horseylady · 21/06/2012 15:27

Detective -impressive you saw one ours are on strike!!

Try to chill, remember he's just doing his job and some have absolutely no bedside manner which is why people like us work with them and try to pick up the pieces.

Skinneylegs glad your home.

Right apart from sugar free polos is there anything else I can take to relieve constipation? I don't think I've been for about a week?!!!! I feel so bloated it's untrue.

Thechick · 21/06/2012 15:36

MrsSkinnyLegs, glad you are back home and welcome to the list. Did you have pain with your tightenings, or was it tightenings only? Sorry if you've said this already.

I read the Guardian bf article. Its really fustrating how one sided it is. I remember reading something else in the Guardian that was very anti bf before. Not good!!

MrsSkinnyLegs · 21/06/2012 16:24

horseylady I find that a decent curry works wonders or pasta with a bit of chilli and tomato. Failing that, does your local hardware shop stock pipe cleaners...?

thechick the tightenings weren't painful, they felt as though the baby was rolling into a ball down low and staying there for half an hour or so. Have you had similar?

NervousAt20 · 21/06/2012 16:31

Congratulations on a baby boy detective

Glad your home mrsskinnylegs hope everything settles down for you :)

horselady try oranges! Worked wonders for menBlush

Okay im prob just being thick but what are muslin squares and what do you use them for Blush

Thechick · 21/06/2012 16:32

I get tightenings quite regularly. Its the top of my belly and aren't painful, but very noticeable. I thought it was bh. Did you doctor say what it was and did they say why they mentioned premature labour?

StuntNun · 21/06/2012 16:34

HorseyLady baked beans, curry, fresh fruit, dried fruit, lactulose (you can get it over the counter). If you're straining try taking of your trousers and putting your feet on the toilet seat (hold on to the wall) so you can squat over the toilet in the most natural position for pooing.

Don't overdo it on the fibre either, it took a while to get constipated and it won't get better overnight. My DS1 had an impacted bowel two years ago and the lactulose worked a treat.

horsey prunes Grin

sophia how did the scan go?

Sophiathesnowfairy · 21/06/2012 17:35

Well, have just returned. All is well and I am so relieved, I can not believe how much it was wriggling around and I wasn't feeling it. The lady who did the scan was incredibly stern and so I daren't ask what the gender was for DH. So right at the end I asked and she said, "oh, I didn't look because you didn't ask" and it was too late. I don't mind as I didn't want to know and DH doesn't seem too out out.

The head does look like it is coming out on the large side though.

horsey cherries are good although a bit expensive at the mo. weatbix with prunes on should clear you out, failing that a good old jalfreziGrin

horseylady · 21/06/2012 17:54

Thanks :) seriously not even an urge to go just pain and uncomfortable :( not hungry I just feel huge with no space. Think I'm not drinking enough I really have got to get stricter!! Just ridden which wasn't best idea but will try to go when I get in.

Sophia glad all ok, ours was the same I asked and she looked. If I'd not known her not sure shed have said!!

MrsSkinnyLegs · 21/06/2012 18:04

Chick I have a history of premature labour having lost my second child at 18+5 2 years ago. The labour started with painless contractions and progressed over a couple of days to birth. An absolute cause wasn't found although an existing medical condition may contribute to premature labour for each pregnancy. So I'm being monitored closely in this pregnancy and when these tightenings came along at pretty much the same dates as 2 years ago, it freaked me out sufficiently to get straight to the hospital.

When I was discharged, the consultant said that tightenings may not be a sign of anything at all, they are merely unhelpful or irritating and women go to term or further despite having them throughout their pregnancies. If they're painful though, probably give your MW a bell.

Cor. Essay. Sorry :)

Thechick · 21/06/2012 18:17

MrsSkinnyLegs I'm so sorry that you had to go through a loss at 18 weeks. I cannot imagine what it was like then and how it is for you now. And not getting an explanation either. Thank you so much for sharing your very personal story, I really appreciate it. You just don't know with pregnancy. I get the tightenings maybe 3 or 4 times a week, I think they are mostly in the evening. I get aches and pains all the time too. Maybe I should be a little less laid back about it all and take more note with what's going on with my body.

MissMummy1 · 21/06/2012 19:05

In my experience mrsskinnylegs doctors and hospitals are usually over-cautious about covering themselves, so I'm sure they wouldn't have sent you home unless they were pretty sure all was okay. Hope everything goes well for you and so sorry to hear about your loss 2 years ago.

Ladies, a word of warning. Avoid eBay at all costs if (like me) you are struggling to squeeze into your 'normal clothes'! I've gone a bit mad with all the absolute bargains on maternity clothes that I've practically bought myself a new wardrobe in the past week! (Don't tell DH, he made me clear out a huge amount of my clothes when we moved into the apartment...) Some absolute cracking buys, just don't bid on everything you see like I do!!

I have a few extra hours at work this week as well so splashed out on an all-in-one steam cleaner. (another eBay bargain....) I've always hated how many unenvironmentally cleaning products we buy and use, and although vinegar and lemon juice work to a point, I want everything super clean for baby! DH thinks it was for him and loves his 'new toy'. So one way to get your men to do all the housework (And I mean rugs, windows, bathroom tiles - the lot!) buy them a cleaning gadget! I give it a week though before the novelty wears off....

Suppose I can't really feel guilty about spending money this week. My mum's moving house and has found a whole lot of stunning nursery furniture in her loft we have now 'acquired'. Only big things still to buy are car seat, car base and cot/mosses basket mattresses! Oh and a £75 changing bag I have my eye on - still trying to convince DH it's not unreasonable as he clicks buy on his drysuit number 5... Still not bad considering we said we weren't going to buy anything till nearer 30 weeks - we're only at 17!

MissMummy1 · 21/06/2012 19:06

*unenvironmentally friendly

Chunkychicken · 21/06/2012 19:37

Oh MissMummy don't spend that much on a change bag UNLESS you have a personal recommendation &/or seen it in the flesh. I have gone through LOADS of expensive ones - all breaking one way or another & going back. My best purchases; a simple nappy 'wrap' from BabyMel & a primark bag!!! At £8-10 a time for the bag, it doesn't seem so bad to buy a replacement (& to be fair, the first 1 I had lasted longer than all the others combined).

Still haven't read that article about bfing - figure it would just wind me up. It's simple really breast is best BUT formula isn't poison, so do whatever suits you & baby. I just think its irresponsible of the media to spread opinion as fact & put people off!!!

Detective Congrats & sorry about the consultant. Don't let the bastards get you down!! You, of all people, should know the pros & cons of your decisions, so stick to your guns.

With all these boys, I wonder if I'm cooking a blue-favoured one??!! I had a girl when everyone was having girls, so maybe I'll be fashionable again? Wink

Someone mentioned re-useable nappies. If baby is bigger this time (DD was 6lb 5oz) I might try - it took so long for her to grow into the 'first' size of reusables, I couldn't be bothered to do it. Lazy, un-environmentally friendly & pricey, but true!! I don't hold out much hope for a big one though, as I was only 6lb 6oz & DH was not much bigger (despite being a big 6ft, 16st fella now!!).

YellowWellies · 21/06/2012 20:28

£75! for a bag! Nooooo think of saving for the house deposit and not having to stress about going back to work before you're ready. I'll be using the free changing bag I've gotten from joining the boots parenting club :) after all it's only going to get covered in half chewed toddler snacks, spilt drinks, snotty tissues etc etc. Have a look at my sister's changing bag if you don't believe me! (am sure she won't mind me saying that). We've not bought a thing - and I'm just too nervous to until after our 20 week scan - we're heading south to Edinburgh in July to get some bits.

LittleLolly · 21/06/2012 20:31

Congratulations to the ladies who have had their scan... Can't believe how many more boys than girls we are having!!

I started having some braxton hicks too, very strange feeling! Completely painless, just a really tight, hard bump!

MissMummy is the changing bag one of the Pink Lining ones??

detective it sounds like you know your mind, what you want and obviously the risks and benefits due to your job, so ignore the Consultant! Is your midwife on your side?

GTbaby · 21/06/2012 21:02

How do u claim ur boots changing bag. I am going to use my regular large VL tote bag for "special" occasions Smile bought it for bday as a treat for myself using all the money I got as a gift. Thought I would use free boots one for everyday.

Registered for baby group on one of the machines in store. Got a voucher to b scanner to claim extra points on baby stuff but nothing for bag? Emailed them but heard nothing!

ValiumQueen · 21/06/2012 21:04

I accidentally bought a Phil and Teds today. On EBay. For £100 so pretty bargainous. Black, 2 years old. Fairly local pick-up. Need to tell DH before the weekend. Hmm, may give him a BJ and tell him then.

I really wanted a Baby Jogger City Mini in purple, but will only use a double for 6-12 months, it seems a bit daft to spend £600 to only buy another single later on. The P&T can be used now for DD2, and as a single again when she decides she wants to walk everywhere, which knowing my luck would be three days after I had bought the side by side!

StuntNun · 21/06/2012 21:32

Nice one Valium I accidentally bought a gender scan a couple of weeks ago so I can sympathise.

Note to self: when feeling all pleased with myself for having bought all the maternity clothes I'll need, give myself a slap for not buying any pyjamas. The ones I have are getting pretty constrictive now. Oh well, off to Primark at the weekend for me.

TheDetective · 21/06/2012 21:33

I've had time to get over myself now, thanks ladies!

I guess I'm a bit --lot- of a control freak, and need things done my way. I was annoyed at how he just walked in the room, not an introduction in sight. I'm annoyed that the midwife I was seeing didn't tell me that he would come in. I'm annoyed that I didn't ask what the appointment was for. After my scan I was just told to go to clinic. I had no idea I would be seeing anyone. Where I've worked the 20 week scan is just that - you don't see anyone after unless there has been an issue identified at scan.

I had specified clearly I did not want a consultant review. And this was documented in my notes. Sneaky fuckers. Now it has his scrawl in it, saying requests (I am not requesting, I am telling you) home birth, not medically supported. Previous section and failed instrumental.

I just didn't want the hassle, or the arrogance, on what should have otherwise been an enjoyable experience. Oh well. Back to community care now. Fingers crossed that won't all go tits up! The community midwife was supportive, and didn't forsee any issues. So its onwards and upwards! Must remember to make an appointment for 25 weeks!
