Birth story!
Woke up at about 4.30 with bad period pain, and lots of bloody show. Contractions started soon after that, and quickly got very close together, so we trekked to the hospital after attaching the TENS machine. Was examined by a mad midwife, who said I was in labour but only 2cm - to take some painkillers, have a bath and they'd maybe see me in the evening or the next day.
Back home, the contractions got a lot stronger in the bath. Tried to nap on the sofa, but they were getting too strong. When they were consistently 2-3 mins apart we phoned the hospital again (and were warned we might get sent home again!) then headed in.
The examination took a while as it had to be paused so many times due to contractions (MW bemused by how much I used the TENs I think!), but she then said she had to get someone for a second opinion, but that it was nothing to worry about and I wouldn't be sent home. Cue lots of worrying until the senior MW came in, examined me and confirmed I was 8-9cms!
She sadly also confirmed that the pools were all in use, but brought me in a birthing ball which I used for a while. After a while I started feeling odd urges to push, and ended up leaning over the back of the bed. I also tried some gas and air at that point, but realised I didn't like it too much. After a while, I was examined and the midwife said that we needed to try another position (lying on my left) to get the baby to move down properly, as nothing seemed to be happening where I was. I moved, and things sped up! The technical pushing time as recorded on my notes is something like 25 mins. I used gas and air at the beginning of each push, but the TENs machine was brilliant for me - helped all the way through!
Isabelle was born at 4.45pm. I then got some cuddles and skin to skin while waiting for the cord to stop pulsing, which took ages! DH then cut it and got some cuddles for himself while I tried to naturally deliver the placenta, which sadly didn't really work. I then had the injection and it still took another 15-20mins, and I then had to be stitched up - so DH got tonnes of cuddles (which he loved!).
