Cakes I think often they stick the name 'maternity' on things to make you think you need it. But maternity pads are different to normal pads - they are thicker / bigger (whereas your always type thing go for being small and discreet) which makes them more absorbent and more padded, which is nicer if you're a bit tender around the undercarriage Grin. Also normal pads tend to have these 'lock away' layers on top and can get caught on stitches / any soreness so generally MWs prefer you to have proper maternity towels. In terms of absorbency, certainly at the start you'd probably struggle with just a normal pad at the start - sorry if tmi but I had literally a gushing feeling every time I stood up.

Maternity knickers on the other hand I think are pointless. Or disposable knickers. I just bought cheapo full brief granny knickers from primary or peacocks or somewhere. That way if you end up with a CS they don't go on the scar. An they're cheap = disposable if any leakage bleeding wise.

Ask away about anything else Smile

jaggythistle · 19/05/2012 14:00

i concur about big cheap pants and proper maternity pads! i was given a pair of disposable pants to try in hospital when DS1 was born, bloody uncomfortable!

i have a large big pant collection, I'm not quite so addicted to them this time as i was after my cs though. Blush

my favourite maternity pads are Tesco, they seemed comfier on my sore undercarriage for some reason.

also agree that you might be surprised how many packs you need, especially for the first week or so...

DreamingOfPeace · 19/05/2012 14:24

I loved the lack of washing of disposable knickers!! And Boots big maternity pads.

What, noone in labour?!

musicalmrs · 19/05/2012 14:38

I bought HUGE knickers (cheap ones), and maternity pads from Tesco. They've been working so far. I'm finding them good as they mean I feel secure and the pad is staying nicely in place...! Might actually buy a few more so I have a few more in the wash - they're not my usual style but finding them soooo comfy at the moment. Jaggy, I've been surprised with how many I've needed! Nobody quite warns you for the volume of blood.. Wink

Wants, Jen, how're things? Still no babies? Surely some must be soon! :) Brooking that you both will have some exciting news soon...

Dream, thanks for the tea tree tip! I'm not sure if I've got any, if not I'll send DH out for some (I know I had some, but whether it survived the move is another matter!). Thank you too Tock (I will

Far, Pop/Fluff is indeed without laptop as Biscuits suggests, but I believe she's getting a new one soon and so will hopefully be back with us. Hope you get to hear the HB at the appointment, it's magical Grin.

Having a good time with snuggles! DD is feeding very well, sleeping less well during the night but really can't complain! DH is wonderful with her - better than me even! Feeds are a bit painful- nipples suffering - will need to sort them out..

Tear's actually healing alright I think - swelling going down and less painful, but I've bought some witch hazel to try and help. Came home yesterday afternoon, and have had two sets of new grandparents visit so far, along with the MW - one more set due this afternoon!

Will post a birth story soon!

jenfraggle · 19/05/2012 15:59

I've just got back from seeing the torch. I was really surprised that most of the police were from the Met rather than Devon & Cornwall. Hoping that the excitement may start me off but doubt it

Wants3 · 19/05/2012 17:50

Nothing much to report here although I did have another show earlier this afternoon! DH has taken ds1 out for the first time in our car and he hasn't taken his phone so maybe things will kick off now:)

jenfraggle · 19/05/2012 18:08

I've had more show today too Wants, think I'm up to 8 times I've found some while wiping [sigh]

I was wandering around earlier as the local groups had stands at the village. My Guides were there so I went along to give them some support. I had hoped that it may start me off but I'm just knackered instead

jenfraggle · 20/05/2012 10:11

Anything happening Wants?

NinjaChipmunk · 20/05/2012 10:12

Just a quick one from me. Many congratulations to musical and Mr.musical and baby isabelle. How lovely.
We're back from our hols and the house is chaos. Will try to get back on later but may have to wait till dp is at work and ds is at nursery tomorrow.
Cakes there have been a few threads about hospital bags and things you need. Am intending on getting my bag together soon so fire away with any questions.
Waves at everyone else. Will be back later my lovelies. X

Just uploaded a new bump pic. As you can see, there is no dropping happening Angry

Biscuitsandtea · 20/05/2012 14:46

No more babies yet? Good luck brookers xx

DreamingOfPeace · 20/05/2012 15:25

Ooh, nice bump though Jen its got to be soon now. At least at 38,39 weeks you're kind of hoping for action but know it could be 3-4 weeks away still. You are so nearly there, less than 2 weeks to go!!

jenfraggle · 20/05/2012 16:39

I've just been to Par Market for a wander to try and get things moving. Ended up with a pain at the bottom of my bump to the side but it was constant rather than contractions :(

musicalmrs · 21/05/2012 00:18

Very few posts today - hoping this is a good sign that more brooking babies are on their way? :-)

NinjaChipmunk · 21/05/2012 08:54

I hope so too musical. How are you getting on? Are you home now? Looks like you moved house just in time! I was lurking while we were away trying to keep up but we were out and about so much I never got the chance to post at all.
jen and wants how are you both today? jen when we were driving through some of the villages round St Austell on our way home on Friday we saw lots of places that were getting ready for the torch to come through and they all had bunting out and stuff. I'd forgotten how much I like Cornwall, its a shame it's so blooming far away!
So who do we have who hasn't popped yet? Jen, wants, me, fluffy, stacks, far, tock, munx, loopy, did I hear generic and cartoonface also got bfp's? I think I may have forgotten some people too!

Well today is my first day at home on annual leave before ML starts at the end of June. Apart from ds bursting into tears as he went out the door (short lived I might add, he was distracted by a bee) I shall be tackling the first on my things to do list and very much enjoying the peace. I'm taking ds to the theatre on Friday to see The Snail and The Whale which I'm really looking forward too (haven't told him yet). What is everyone else up to today?

jenfraggle · 21/05/2012 09:33

Still nothing happening here Ninja. You were lucky with the weather, last week was one of the driest for ages, we've had so much rain down here lately. I live in one of the villages round St Austell but not one that the torch went through so no bunting here.

Today will mostly be spent being fed up. Got another sweep tomorrow so fingers crossed that does something. It's frustrating that I can't go for a short walk without being in pain but it's always a constant pain rather than contractions. I wouldn't mind the pain so much if I thought it was actually doing something.

NinjaChipmunk · 21/05/2012 09:55

d'oh! I forgot smegs and whims!

OP posts:
NinjaChipmunk · 21/05/2012 09:58

aw jen that sounds rotten. Have you got any projects on the go or that you could start to take your mind off things? I started making curtains for ds's room about a day before he arrived. Needless to say my mum had to finish them off....And yes, if your weather down there has been anything like ours recently its been horrendous. Although last week was lovely in Cornwall it was apparently all thunderstoms and the like up here. Glad we missed it!
This thread is sooooo quiet recently.

ScrambledSmegs · 21/05/2012 11:13

Never. Ever. Go on a hen weekend when you are the only pregnant one there, and sharing a room with 2 substantially younger women. You will NOT sleep. AT ALL. And I pulled something when lifting my case up and down steps on the underground yesterday - I have a pain all down my right side. I did have a really lovely time though Smile

Jen and Wants I hope it happens soon for you both, I'm on tenterhooks here with all the tales of shows etc!

Ninja the Snail and the Whale sounds great, I love that book! Wish DD did, all we seem to have is the Mog books on rotation, it's a real pain! Enjoy your day off.

No more flutterings for me, I'm really panicking as I keep thinking the worst (bad trait). I think it's because I keep accidentally reading really sad threads and therefore think it could happen to me. My next mw appointment isn't till July, after the anomaly scan so I won't even have that to set my mind at rest :( I'm seeing a consultant in mid-June too, in order to discuss the Strep-B issue (general aargh), will they listen to the baby's heartbeat then? Really hope I survive till then!

TheLittleFriend · 21/05/2012 11:29
NinjaChipmunk · 21/05/2012 11:29

how many weeks are you now smegs? I found the flutterings really came and went and there were tomes where it went a good few days before I thought I'd actually felt something again. I guess they turn themselves around and are more cushioned when they are still little? The hen night sounds like fun (except the pulling of muscles!) Were you out on the razz all weekend then? Thats good going for a pg person!

OP posts:
ScrambledSmegs · 21/05/2012 11:42

14 weeks now. I've tested positive for strep-b (think it was in urine sample) and I've been told that I can't have a home birth and the baby will be in terrible danger if I don't go into hospital and stay on an iv drip all the way through labour Hmm Overkill much?! I've done some research myself, I can have antibiotics in early labour and go home to give birth, and I refuse to be bullied again during labour.

The problem is that I had a bad experience during labour with dd and have subsequently developed a fear of hospitals (mainly labour wards) and especially of birth midwives Sad I know that things will go badly if I have to go into hospital because of the way I react now when I go in for scans/midwife booking-in meetings. It's not them, it's me! Iv'e been referred for counselling but fear it will be too little, too late.

ScrambledSmegs · 21/05/2012 11:44

Hardly on the razz! I went out for the meals and drinks (tonic water & lime, mmm Hmm ) but couldn't make it to the nightclub, I was too tired. Slept badly though, just found it being odd not sleeping in my own bed.

farfallarocks · 21/05/2012 11:49

smegs I asked the midwife that question this morning as my flutterings come and go, totally totally normal at this stage, its actually really early to be feeling them at all I was told.
Regular pattern only really established after 25 weeks apparently.

Bad news about the strep B, how did they test that, just urine? Yuo can clear it before then I think, I have heard of a natural remedy involving garlic in some gauze if you have the stomach for it!!

Bit disppointed the midwife did not check the heartbeat, she said it was so hit and miss at 16 weeks they no longer do it as it causes such panic when its not found. Gah!!! I can see her point but was so keen! Have to hang on for 5 weeks until the next scan :)

jen you look ready to pop, keeping all crossed for you!

NinjaChipmunk · 21/05/2012 11:54

Wow 14 weeks already! Could you afford an independant midwife or doula to consult with ( I have no idea what that sort of thing costs but I know scream had an independant midwife). Either that or enquire if any of your local midwives are properly pro-homebirth and get them onside. It sounds like you need an advocate you can trust. I do hope you get to catch up on some sleep soon though, feeling tired just makes everything so much more difficult to cope with!
